The Montreal Canadiens have signed centre MannyMalhotra to a one-year $850,000 contract. Steve Largent Elite Jersey . In 69 games with the Hurricanes in 2013-14, Malhotra scored seven goals and added six assists. The 34-year-old has appeared in 933 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, San Jose Sharks, and Vancouver Canucks, scoring 115 goals and adding 176 assists. Malhotra made $600,000 with the Hurricanes in 2013-14. More details to follow. Russell Wilson Womens Jersey .com) - The Edmonton Oilers have made NailYakupov a healthy scratch for the second straight game for tonights game against the Washington Capitals. Bruce Irvin Womens Jersey .ca NBA Power Rankings, but there are changes among those teams in pursuit. There was quite a fireworks display at Shaw Park on Monday night. And that was before the official fireworks display. Tyler Kuhn hit a grand slam home run and had seven RBI; Reggie Abercrombie, Josh Mazzola, Casey Haerther and Donnie Webb also hit home runs; and in total, the Winnipeg Goldeyes had 22 hits and scored 23 runs. With an 8-3 win in the opener and an 15-1 shellacking in the night cap, the Goldeyes not only swept a Monday night doubleheader from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, they swept a four-game series in the process. After taking two on Monday, the Goldeyes have won five straight, are 28-14 on the season and five-and-a-half games ahead of the St. Paul Saints and six games ahead of Fargo in the race for first in the American Associations North Division. In Game 1, Kuhn led the way with his first homer of the year and the Goldeyes first grand slam of the season as Winnipeg scored eight times in their final three at bats to win 8-3. Im a singles and doubles hitter, Kuhn said earlier this season. I dont even step to the plate thinking about hitting home runs. In almost seven full seasons of professional baseball, the 27-year-old Goldeyes shortstop went into Monday nights first game of the doubleheader with only 17 career round trippers. He had yet to hit a home run this season when he yanked a Kevin Fuqua fastball over the right field fence for a sixth-inning grand slam, as he and the Goldeyes put an exclamation point on the first rout of the evening. Not to be outdone, Goldeyes first baseman Casey Haerther hit a solo shot and went three-for-three with three RBI and a run scored. Starter Matt Jackson (6-2, 2.98 ERA) picked up the win for Winnipeg while Fargos ace, Jake Laber (6-2, 4.10 ERA) suffered the loss for Fargo. In Game 2, there was no doubt from the first inning onward. Winnipeg scored three runs in the first on a Mazzola solo homer and Webbs two-run blast. The Fish proceeded to put up two more in the second; four more in the third; two in the fourth on a triple by Webb and a two-run shot by Abercrombie; and four more in the fifth as Mazzola drove in four runs, Abercrombie and Brock Bond each drove in three and Kuhn and Webb each drove in a pair. Derrick Coleman Elite Jersey. Mazzola had three hits while Haerther, Webb and Abercrombie all had two-hit games. Mazzola was on base four times and scored twice while Webb got on base three times and scored all three times. Abercrombie, Bond and Ryan Pineda each scored twice. Every Goldeyes player reached base at least once. Starter Chandler Barnard (2-0, 2.92 ERA), who kind of got lost in the hitting clinic on Monday night, picked up the win for Winnipeg. Barnard allowed one run on just four hits and recorded his first complete game victory as a Goldeye. Meanwhile, Fargo starter Justin Erasmus, (2-2, 6.75 ERA) who lasted only an inning and a third, suffered the loss. Ive had a number of complete games under my belt and thats the most fun, said Barnard, who turned a visit from manager Rick Forney in the top of the second into his best start of the season. You want to go out there and finish what you start. When Rick came out he was awesome. He just told me my sinker was really sinking and I shouldnt worry about anything and just throw strikes and get outs. It was confidence-building visit to the mound and Rick was awesome. I made a couple of adjustments and things just came together. The Goldeyes will open a three-game series with the Kansas City T-Bones on Tuesday afternoon, Canada Day, at 4 p.m. at Shaw Park. Ethan Hollingsworth (1-0, 1.59 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Andy Noga (0-2, 4.08 ERA) will take to the bump for Kansas City. Tickets for all 2014 Winnipeg Goldeyes games and the 2014 American Association All-Star Game are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office. Valencia defied the early sending-off of Seydou Keita to beat Ludogorets Razgrad 3-0 away and virtually seal its place in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday. Roddy White Jersey . In other last-16 first legs, Jackson Martinez scored Portos goal in a 1-0 win over Napoli and Basel drew 0-0 at home to Red Bull Salzburg. Valencia was 1-0 ahead thanks to Antonio Barragans fifth-minute goal when Keita was given a straight red card for bringing down Roman Bezjak in the penalty box in the 24th. Bezjaks spot kick was saved and the Spanish visitors added goals by Fede Cartabia in the 33rd and Philippe Senderos in the 59th. Juninho Quixada was sent off with 10 minutes to go for Ludogorets. There were five more last-16 first legs late Thursday. Matt Bosher Jersey . Froch retained his WBA and IBF titles with a ninth-round stoppage against Groves in Manchester on Nov. 23. BARCELONA, Spain -- Barcelona was unfazed by the recent departure of its club president amid a lawsuit as it eased to a 3-0 win over Malaga on Sunday to reclaim its share of the Spanish league lead. David Backes Jersey . Lionel Messi didnt score but he played a part in two goals, setting up Pedro Rodriguez to make it 2-0 in the 55th after Gerard Pique had opened the scoring five minutes before halftime. Pedro then took Messis pass and crossed for Alexis Sanchez to tap in the hosts third in the 61st. Atletico Madrid stayed level with Barcelona at the top of the standings by romping to a 4-2 win at Rayo Vallecano as Diego Costa scored his 20th league goal of the season. Both title rivals ended a run of two straight draws to restore a one-point advantage over Real Madrid. The match at Camp Nou came just three days after Sandro Rosell stepped down to fight a lawsuit alleging that he misappropriated funds by hiding the true cost of signing of Brazil star Neymar. He and the club deny the accusations. Josep Bartomeu attended his first match as the Catalan clubs 40th president in the Camp Nou stands. Pique said that although he didnt know if Rosells exit was good for the club, he was sure the administrative turmoil hadnt affected the squads focus on defending its Spanish league title. "We continue competing the same way we have in recent years," said Pique. "Off the pitch, it is something people talk about, but on the pitch it affects us very little. "After all the bad moments we have had in these recent years we have maintained the league lead and that shows this group is strong and that we can stay on top," Pique said in a possible reference to the team dealing with former coach Tito Vilanovas and player Eric Abidals illnesses. Far from distracted, Gerardo Martinos team played one of its best games of the season, bombarding Malaga with 18 shots on-target of all types and from all angles. Martino, in fact, said he was more concerned about "not winning by a wider margin" than the clubs leadership. Pique broke through when he used his stomach to control a corner kick flicked on by Alexis, sized up Willy Caballero and then drove the ball under the Malaga goalie. Pique headed another corner kick against the woodwork moments before Pedro slotted inside the far post. Messi then dribbled at the Malaga defence to draw them in before laying off for Pedro, who found Alexis alone to score. Barcelonas Ibrahim Afellay went on as a late substitute after recovering from a six-month injury layoff. It was his first appearance for Barcelona since May 2012. Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz scored two goals and set up another in a 5-1 rout at 10-man Osasuna as the Basque club strengthened its grip on fourth place. Almeria edged Getafe 1-0 courtesy of striker Jonathan Zongos second-half header to escape the relegation zone. Diego Costa only trails Madrids 22-goal Cristiano Ronaldo as the leagues leading scorer, and the Brazilian-born players passing was key to Atleticos first two goals at Vallecas Stadium. "It was important to win after two draws," said Atletico striker David Villa, who downplayed the move back to the top. "We had to win, thats the important thing, going ahead game by game. We cant think about the rest." However, Atleticos win was tarnished by a shoulder injury to young midfielder Oliver Torres in the second half. Villa got Atletico rolling in the eighth minute after he stole the ball deep in Rayos territory and worked a one-two with Diego Costa before firing in his 10th league goal of the season. After Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Jonathan Vieras penalty, Arda Turan took his first of two goals in the 30th to finish off a collective effort, with the ball flowing from Diego Costa through a generous Jose Sosa for Turan to roll in. Viera made up for his miss by scoring in the 40th, but Turan struck again in the 44th. Diego Costa found the net for the first time in 2014 when he redirected Filipe Luis cross in the 74th before Joaquin Larrivey responded almost immediately for Rayos second. St.Louis Blues Jersey . Owens was roughed up in Torontos 20-9 defeat to Montreal on Tuesday, needing treatment twice after hurting his neck and taking a hard shot to the abdomen. In other news from Fridays practice, Jerious Norwood took most of the snaps at running back for Curtis Steele. Norwood also did some returning, although Milanovich said returns would likely be done by committee. Sixteen teams have moved on. Sixteen teams have gone home. There have been 136 goals, countless talking points, and numerous standout performances. Its time to make sense of the last 15 days. Here is your best and worst from the Group Stage.Team of the Group StageGK: Keylor Navas (CRC) Only let in one goal, a penalty in his opening 45 minutes of the action. Navas made one of the saves of the tournament in the 44th minute in the same half against Uruguay. A shot by Diego Forlan took a dramatic deflection and had eyes for the top corner. Navas ranged back and made an incredible save on his off-shoulder, showing standout body control and concentration making the unorthodox stop. If Navas doesnt make that save, Costa Rica doesnt come back to win that match, and probably doesnt advance from the group. It was a special stop from a special goalkeeper.RB: Serge Aurier (CIV) Pacey. Strong. Purposeful. And positionally sound. The 22-year old did it all in the group stage. He set up both goals fantastically well in the 2-1 comeback win in the opener against Japan. Its disappointing his team couldnt provide enough going forward against Greece to advance to the next round. Aurier is an emerging top talent and showed why he is so coveted.CB: Giancarlo Gonzalez (CRC) The Columbus Crew centre-back was a rock throughout the Group Stage. He had no better performance than in the second match against Italy, making what ended up being a four-man Italian attack look like a bunch of amateurs. Timely tackles and the general of Costa Ricas backline, he kept the group organized and keeping a high line. CB: Rafael Marquez (MEX) The fourth World Cup captaining El Tri and perhaps putting in his finest performance. Marquez has led a young backline with composure and strength against a group featuring marquee attacking talent. The job he did on Croatias Mario Mandzukic was a master-class, as was his match-winning goal, the third straight World Cup he has scored. The performance has been one of the most unexpected in the tournament, slowing down over recent years. The 35 year old has been class in Brazil.LB: Daley Blind (NED) The versatility is most impressive with the left back. His presence going forward has been as purposeful as his defending in the adaptable wingback position. His ball from mid-field on Robin van Persies opening goal of the tournament was a thing of beauty. And he thrived in a more defensive role against Chile with Bruno Martin Indi out with Dirk Kuyt in front of him. Few have looked better at the World Cup.M: Hector Herrera (MEX) - The Mexican keeps getting better as the games go by. He has provided a reliable midfield link to the attacking players and has threatened multiple times on goal. The work-rate is second to none and quality is there to equal. His game against Croatia was worthy of Man of the Match. The future is bright for the 24 year old.M: James Rodriguez (COL) A midfield engine and the heart and soul of Colombia. Radamel Falcaos absence was deemed disastrous, but not with the number 10 manning the field. Hes taken the tournament by storm, contributing three goals and two assists, capping his fine group stage performance off by chipping the keeper after coming on as a second half substitute against Japan. From dropping deep, to providing hustle plays, to decisiveness in the final third, hes been everywhere. Remember this name.M: Juan Guillermo Cuadrado (COL) Rodriguezs teammate on the right wing has even more flare. The footwork and pace has been unmatched down the flank. A goal and three assists to his tally is a testament to his quality.F: Thomas Muller (GER) Mr. Golden Boot himself. Without a true number nine, Muller is the next best thing for Germany. Four goals in the tournament, including an opening match hat trick puts him in position for back-to-back World Cup scoring titles. Only 24, Muller is threatening to shatter records in the not-so distant future, having scored nine World Cup goals already. The flexibility in the German system allows him to freelance to a degree. Muller has found the spaces and has finished with authority.F: Arjen Robben (NED) The best player coming out of the best group, Robben has to make this list. His speed and craftiness on the run is a game-changer. Three goals and an assist so far, and many other opportunities coming close, Robben maintained his top form through all group stage matches with production in all. He wore the captains armband in Robin van Persies absence against Chile, and showed remarkable composure in a difficult game. He is the best counter-attacking player in what has been the counter-attacking World Cup.F: Lionel Messi (ARG) Nigeria head coach Stephen Keshi remarked Messi is from another planet after the Argentines two-goal performance against his team in a 3-2 win. Messi was that good. In his two previous games, Messi was unspectacular, but scored the game-winner in both. There is no player that can take advantage of weakness more than Messi. He narrowly edges Neymar on the list because of the flair for the dramatic. Messi has put an otherwise subpar Argentina on his shoulders. This may very well be his World Cup. Group Stage Second TeamGK: Guillermo Ochoa (MEX) Save on the tournament on NeymarRB: Daryl Janmaat (NED) The bookend to Blind has been likewise impressiveCB: Gary Medel (CHI) Chilean bulldog playing much bigger than his statureCB: Mats Hummels (GER) Professional, intelligent performances from key to the German defenceLB: Junior Diaz (CRC) Athelticism and ability to get forward have been a nightmare for slower competitionM: Charles Aranguiz (CHI) Goal against Spain the cherry on top of thorough group stage performancesM: Nigel De Jong (NED) Defensive cog has remained composed, allowing attacking players get out in frontM: Toni Kroos (GER) Passing machine, dictating tempo from the middle of the parkF: Neymar (BRA) Four goals makes puts him in joint tournament lead with flair to spareF: Robin Van Persie (NED) Best goal so far, but suspension keeps him out of first teamF: Karim Benzema (FRA) No player looks more hungry for goals Top Five Moments5) Timmy Terrific (AUS vs. NED) Tim Cahills finish on thhe volley with his opposite foot rivals for goal of the tournament. David Backes Blues Jersey. Seconds after the Netherlands took a 1-0 lead, the Australian talisman hit a ball as pure as they come, with the ball hitting underneath the crossbar and in. The moment was breathtaking, with the Aussies full of belief. It was a goal scorers goal and there wont be a much better truer strike in the tournament.4) Ochoa to the Rescue (MEX vs. BRA) Neymars header had eyes for goal if it were not for the out-stretched Mexican goalkeeper. Goal-line technology made the save look even better, showing Ochoa taking the ball off the line. It was incredible bravery getting to the ball with the post looming, with reaction time that dazzles. No save will be better in Brazil. Ochoa was the hero on the day in a 0-0 draw.3) Persieing (NED vs. ESP) The World Cups hottest fad came from a goal of the highest quality. Down 1-0 to Spain in the 44th minute of the mouth-watering Group B opener, Robin van Persie at full pace took a long ball through the air from midfield and without hesitation struck with a diving header for the ages. The ball found the top corner past Iker Casillas with van Persie going face-first into the ground. RVP admitted after he saw Casillas off his line and picked out the spot. The difficulty level is off the charts and van Persie delivered. Were all better off for the photos that have followed with even RVPs own grandfather face first into the ground, Persieing.2) Messi Magic (ARG vs. IRN) It was supposed to be a walk in the park for Argentina. Instead, Iran put up an 11-man defensive wall that seemed unbreakable. Iran even grew in confidence, pushing forward for a potential winner. The match was settled in the 91st minute through the dramatics coming off the left-foot of Argentinas number 10. Iranian defenders gave Messi his lethal left side for the first time in the match. Messi seized the opportunity, burying it low left side and delivering the dagger into the hearts of all of Tehran. A moment as such is made for the best. The legend of Messi grows. 1) Varela at the Death (POR vs. USA) The United States were seconds away from advancing to the Round of 16. They had come from behind to take a 2-1 lead over Portugal in the difficult conditions in Manaus. Never seen before numbers of Americans watched in primetime, as their new soccer heroes were about to deliver to the nation. That was until Cristiano Ronaldo, who was frustrated all night, intervened. Eder won the ball in the midfield before the ball was played wide with Ronaldo. With time running down, Demarcus Beasley assumed Ronaldo was going to take the ball to goal. Beasley stepped back to give space and Ronaldo obliged, taking advantage of the space delivering a cross for the ages to the on-running Varela. The Portuguese substitute finished and the American dream was shattered. Shock and Awe. It was the last meaningful touch of the ball and the most dramatic finish imaginable. The final was 2-2. The USA would have to wait another day. Worst Five Moments5) Fred Flop (BRA vs. CRO) The Brazilian striker duped the match official into calling a penalty on Croatia in the tournament opener. It was a clear flop by Fred, and a horrible way to open the tournament.4) Akinfeev Howler (RUS vs. KOR) Every tournament has one of two. Igor Akinfeev obliged with worst goal conceded. An innocent shot by Lee Keun-Ho went right through the hands of the Russian number one. It was a sign of what was to come for Russia. It was a nightmare start to a nightmare competition for Fabio Capellos side.3) Cameroon Chaos (CMR vs. CRO) It was a game Cameroon lost their heads. A mindless sending off of Alex Song put the team at a deficit. After being played off the pitch by their opponents, matters got worse in the dying minutes as Benoit Assou- Ekotto confronted Benjamin Moukandjo, head-butting his teammate. It was an ugly incident showing the level of dysfunction in the team. It was an embarrassment of extraordinary proportions to happen on the global stage. Assou-Ekotto did not play in Cameroons final match.2) Dzeko Disallowed Goal (BIH vs. NGA) Edin Dzeko had a goal in the 21st minute ruled offside. He wasnt. It was the most blatant case of a goal disallowed that should have stood in the group stage. Mexico was denied two in similar fashion against Cameroon that were less egregious. The disallowed goal proved costly as Bosnia and Herzegovina lost the match and were knocked out of the tournament. The case is the clearest shout that technology should be used to adjudicate offside-goal decisions.1) Suarez Bite (URU vs. ITA) It will be the most vivid image coming out of this World Cup for all the wrong reasons. The shoulder bite of Giorgio Chiellini by serial biter Luis Suarez is a stain on the game and takes away from what has been one of the best sporting tournaments we have ever seen. The defence of Suarez by his Uruguayan teammates and federation are equally disturbing. There is no room in the game for an individual like Suarez. The decision was swift by FIFA to punish and they should be applauded for the heavy punishment (four month suspension from the game and nine match international ban). Its a travesty the bite was not caught when the chomp went down. Or else Italy may be still alive leaving Uruguay with plenty to chew on. The New York Islanders said on Tuesday that goalie EvgeniNabokov will be out for at least a week with a lower body injury. Eddie Royal Jersey . The veteran netminder was hurt during Mondays game against Dallas when he stretched to make a save in the first period. He left the game and did not return. KevinPoulin replaced him and also got the start against Toronto on Tuesday. Nabokov, 38, is 9-8-5 this season with a 2.88 GAA and one shutout for the Islanders. New York head coach Jack Capuano said Nabokov will be re-evaluted. Corey Liuget Elite Jersey . JOHNS, N. Kellen Winslow Elite Jersey . The All-Star point guard, sidelined for the past six months with a knee injury, was set to return to the Oklahoma City Thunder lineup for Sunday nights home game against the Phoenix Suns, weeks earlier than expected.BALTIMORE -- For much of the afternoon, AaronRodgers was ducking oncoming linemen and misconnecting with hurried throws. When it counted, however, Rodgers came up with the big plays. Rodgers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to JordyNelson, EddieLacy ran for 120 yards and MasonCrosby kicked four field goals as the Green Bay Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens 19-17 on Sunday. Rodgers went 17 for 32 for 315 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He played most of the game without two of his top three receivers -- JamesJones hurt his left knee on a first-quarter play, and RandallCobb left for good after being struck on his right knee on a tackle by MattElam. And still, Rodgers was magnificent. His 64-yarder to Nelson gave Green Bay a 16-3 lead late in the third quarter. After the Ravens closed to 19-17 on an 18-yard touchdown catch by DallasClark with 2:04 remaining, Rodgers clinched the victory with a 52-yard completion to JermichaelFinley on a third-and-3. Rodgers completed only seven passes after halftime, yet those plays totalled 199 yards. "Days like today remind you of why you love this game so much," Rodgers said. "Offensively, were struggling a little bit, but we found a way to make enough plays to win." The Ravens (3-3) had won 13 straight at home against NFC foes. "Aaron made some really good plays out of the pocket in the second half," Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said. "Early, he held it and took some sacks. Later, he held it and found some openings." Rodgers received ample aid from a depleted defence. Despite playing without injured linebackers ClayMatthews and BradJones, the Packers limited Baltimore to 47 yards rushing and registered five sacks, including three by A.J.Hawk. "Its kind of been our motto for a long time around here: Next man up. We have to make it work," Hawk said. "We had a lot of young guys out there today who really did a good job." It all added up to Green Bays first road win following losses at San Francisco and Cincinnati. "Its important to win on the road in this league if you want to make the playoffs," Rodgers said. "Thiss was a tough environment. Keenan Allen Womens Jersey. This is a team thats defending champs, a football team thats very well-coached, great players on both sides of the ball. This is a great team character-building win." Green Bay went up 9-0 in the third quarter when Crosby kicked a 50-yard field goal to cap a drive that featured a 43-yard pass play from Rodgers to JarrettBoykin. Baltimore answered with its first score, a 23-yard field goal by JustinTucker following a 59-yard completion from JoeFlacco to rookie MarlonBrown. Harassed and hurried for much of the afternoon, Rodgers finally came up with a signature moment. He started to his left, then rolled right before lofting a perfect spiral to Nelson, who had gotten behind LardariusWebb. Down 16-3, the Ravens began playing with a sense of urgency. Flacco directed a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass to JacobyJones with 11:52 remaining. Jones, who missed the previous four weeks with a knee injury, finished with two catches for 42 yards and had a 35-yard kickoff return. Looking to enhance Green Bays 16-10 lead, Rodgers and the Packers held onto the ball for just over 7 1/2 minutes before Crosby kicked a 31-yard field goal with 4:17 remaining. It turned out to be the game-winner. Flacco went 20 for 34 for 342 yards and got no help from the running game -- RayRice finished with 34 yards on 14 carries and was stuffed three straight times inside the 5 during the second quarter. "Weve got to be better on first and second down," Flacco said. Baltimore accumulated only 36 yards of offence during the first quarter, zero on the ground. In the second quarter, a peculiar sequence of events began when Green Bays RyanTaylor blocked a punt. The ball bounced beyond the line of scrimmage, was touched by JohnKuhn of the Packers and recovered by Baltimore at its own 41-yard line. The Ravens subsequently got a first-and-goal at the Green Bay 4, but four straight runs failed to get the ball into the end zone. Late in the half, Flacco was sacked and lost the ball. Green Bays DatoneJones recovered and Crosby connected on a 31-yard field goal as time expired for a 6-0 lead. ' ' '

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil -- The Brazilian government has brushed aside the importance of more delays in completing 2014 World Cup stadiums, saying that missing FIFAs deadline will not affect the countrys ability to successfully host next years tournament. Demaryius Thomas Blue Jersey . A day after FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said three stadiums would not be ready in time for the Dec. 31 deadline, Brazilian officials said they actually plan to deliver all six remaining venues after that date. They claim only three are delayed, with the other three being handed over after the expected date only because of problems accommodating the schedule of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who wants to be present for the ceremonies. Brazils Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo said Brazil is like a bride who gets to the wedding late, but the event still goes on as expected. "In every wedding that I attended the bride was late. Ive never seen a bride arrive on time. But Ive never seen a wedding not happen because of that," Rebelo said. "Its probable that there will be a delay here or there, but nothing too significant. What is important is that all of the stadiums will be ready (in the end)." FIFA has already said it will have to change plans at the venues because of the delivery delays. FIFA Marketing Director Thierry Weil said the schedule for the release of tickets has already been slightly altered because the seating plans have not been finalized, and footballs governing body said other areas will also be affected. "Due to the reduced timeline, FIFA, the LOC, government and stadium authorities are adjusting the stadium operational program to ensure that the stadiums are delivered and host events prior to the FIFA World Cup without compromising on safety or quality," FIFA said in a statement. Brazilian officials reiterated there was no reason for concern. "We are in a much more advanced stage at this point in time than we were before the Confederations Cup," Brazils deputy sports minister Luis Fernandes said. "In March, there were still doubts whether the Maracana would be ready for the final. We are in a much better position now. The only doubt we have is related to the Sao Paulo stadium." Sao Paulo remains the biggest question mark after a crane collapse last week killed two workers and damaged part of the stadium. A report on the scale of the damage is expected by the end of the week. But there is still confusion about the delivery date of the other five stadiums that arent ready, with the government, local World Cup organizers and FIFA saying different things. The other six World Cup stadiums were ready for the Confederations Cup. Valcke had said that in addition to Sao Paulo, the southern city of Curitiba and the wetlands city of Cuiaba also would not be ready to deliver their stadiums by the end of the year as expected. He said they would likely be ready in January or February. Rebelo, the government official in charge of Brazils preparations for the World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics, said Wednesday that the stadium in Porto Alegre was also delayed, and that all six remaining stadiums will be only be delivered in January. The local World Cup organizing committee had said that only Sao Paulo and Curitiba were facing delays, and that Curitiba might not be ready until March. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets say former Minnesota Wild head coach Todd Richards is joining their staff as an assistant coach. Alterraun Verner Black Friday Jersey . Columbus coach Scott Arniel says he was looking for someone with head coaching experience to fill the job and he respects Richards, who was fired by Minnesota earlier this year. The Clippers, looking to win their second straight division title, are 19-7 since Dec. 14 and 11-4 since All-Star point guard ChrisPaul separated his right shoulder. They lead second-place Phoenix by 3 1/2 games in the Pacific Division following the Suns victory over Charlotte. DeAndreJordan had 14 rebounds and 10 points during a foul-plagued 35 minutes. EnesKanter led Utah with 23 points and 14 boards, while teammates DerrickFavors and JeremyEvans sat out with injuries. Favors has inflammation in his right hip, and Evans has a bruised tailbone and right elbow. The Jazz lost the second game of a back-to-back set for the 10th time in 13 tries this season, one night after holding an emotional halftime tribute to Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan in Salt Lake City, complete with a banner depicting his win total in 23 years with the club and appearances by KarlMalone and JohnStockton. The Clippers turned a three-point deficit into a 73-61 lead with an 18-3 run highlighted by Griffins reverse alley-oop dunk off a lob from Crawford with 2:43 left in the third quarter. The Jazz got as close as 88-79 on a pair of free throws by GordonHayward with 6:10 to play. Despite outshooting Utah 51.5 per cent to 41 per cent in the first half, the Clippers had to settle for a 42-all tie at the break after the lead changed hands nine times. Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers had to summon RyanHollins and Crawford off the bench earlier than he expected after Jordan picked up his second foul with 8:11 left in the first quarter and shooting guard J. William Gholston Jersey. .J.Redick got his second one just 64 seconds later. But the Clippers demonstrated again why they possess one of the deepest teams in the NBA as they shot 51.4 per cent from the field and held the Jazz to 35.8 per cent. AlecBurks, the first player off the Jazz bench, missed seven of eight shots and finished with four points. RudyGobert, the second player off the bench, fouled out with 8:04 remaining and finished with five points in 18 minutes. The Clippers won their eighth straight meeting with Utah, making it their longest winning streak against the Jazz since the franchises began competing against each other in 1974-75. NOTES: Jordan entered Saturday leading the NBA in rebounding average (14.0) and field goal percentage (64.9). Only one player in the previous 40 seasons has finished first in both categories: DwightHoward in 2009-10 with Orlando (13.2 rebounds, 61.2 per cent shooting). The only player prior to that to have accomplished the feat was Wilt Chamberlain, who did it eight times between 1960-61 and 1972-73. ... The Clippers are 14-0 when shooting at least 50 per cent, and 41-3 since the start of last season. ... The Clippers are 19-0 at home when leading after three quarters and 32-3 overall in those situations. ... Griffin scored a season-high 40 points against the Jazz on Dec. 28 in a 98-90 Clippers victory at Staples Center, including 14 free throws on 17 attempts. ... Jordan, trying to join Michael Cage (1987-88) as the only Clippers to win a rebounding title, recorded his 3,000th rebound in the NBA during the regular season after a missed layup by TreyBurke in the third quarter. ... Burks averaged 18.4 points over his previous eight games -- the first four as a starter while Hayward was sidelined with a hip flexor. ' ' '

Almost 40 years to the day since playing their first ever match against San Jose Earthquakes, the Vancouver Whitecaps will face the Quakes once again on Saturday, as the club celebrates its 40th anniversary. Retro Jordan 11 Legend Blue Sale . But amidst the celebrations, its important the Whitecaps return to winning ways in Major League Soccer against an Earthquakes team that is below them in the Western Conference standings. The Form: Its now four matches without a victory for the Whitecaps who are yet to win against a Western Conference opponent this season, but they have tied their last two games against two of the top teams in Major League Soccer. In Utah last Saturday, the Whitecaps started terribly, going two goals down inside the first nine minutes against Real Salt Lake, but the second half was much improved, and a late comeback ensured the Whitecaps left Rio Tinto Stadium with a point. The Big Question: Will either of the Uruguayans be given the chance to start? Nicolas Mezquida and Sebastian Fernandez made an impact coming off the bench at Real Salt Lake a week ago, both scoring a goal, including a fantastic strike from Fernandez in the final minute of stoppage time to tie the match. Prior to the game, Carl Robinson said last week that the Uruguayan duo had been performing very well in training and wear very close to getting a start in the team. Mezquida has appeared in four matches this season, all as a substitute, while Fernandez started the season but then was left on the bench after a couple of less effective performances. With a Canadian Championship semifinal against Toronto FC coming up on Wednesday, its likely Mezquida and Fernandez will start at least one of the two games. "Everyone will get their chance," said Robinson after training on Thursday. "As a player, all you want is the chance to play and show what you can do, and most of the players will get that chance." The Lineup: Chilean midfielder Pedro Morales missed the trip to Real Salt. Lake to try and heal a back problem that has plagued him in the opening weeks of the season, but if he has fully recovered, he is likely to return to theWhitecaps lineup. Once again, there is a big decision for Carl Robinson in the centre of defence. Last week, Jay DeMerit stayed at home as Honduran international Johnny Leveron partnered Andy OBrien at the back. Robinson must decide whether to stick with that pairing and bring some consistency to the back line, or bring DeMerit back into the eleven. Nigel Reo-Coker played the first three matches of the season but hasnt played since due to injury, coachs decision and most recently illness. Its doubtful that Reo-Coker will be considered for the starting lineup but he could return on the bench. The Opposition: San Jose Earthquakes started the season with a five match winless run, but that came to an end last weekend when they won 1-0 at home to Chivas USA. The Quakes are yet to win away from home this season, losing 1-0 at Kansas City and tying 0-0 at Colorado. Yannick Djalo scored the only goal of the game against Chivas. The 27-year-old from Portugal is still adapting in his first few weeks in Major League Soccer as he gets fully fit, but he is a quality addition for the Quakes this season, joining on loan from Benfica. 2012 MLS MVP Chris Wondolowski has scored three goals in six matches so far this season as he looks to win a place in Jurgen Klinsmanns United States squad for this summers World Cup in Brazil. The 31-year-old has an excellent goal scoring record against the Whitecaps. On a day where there will be plenty of focus on the soccer history of Vancouver, it is fitting that there is a heavy Vancouver presence amongst the Earthquakes coaching staff. Head Coach Mark Watson played for Whitecaps in 1994 and 2005 while assistant coach Nick Dasovic previously played for the 86ers and was a player coach with Caps from 2002 to 2005. Both men are from Vancouver. The Odds: The Earthquakes are yet to win in Vancouver against the Whitecaps in Major League Soccer and the Caps must be favourites heading in. Carl Robinsons team are four points ahead of the Quakes in the standings but have played two games more. The Whitecaps continue to develop under Robinson, but they must start to put together 90 minute performances if they are to get back to winning ways. Where To Watch: Whitecaps against San Jose is live on TSN2 on Saturday. Were on air with a special Whitecaps 40th anniversary pre-match show at 6:30pm et/3:30pm pt. Cheap Jordan 11 Legend Blue . CHICAGO -- Ozzie Guillens last game with the Chicago White Sox was quite the nailbiter. Nick Perry Womens Jersey . SergioSantos struck out AdamLind with the bases loaded to preserve a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night in Guillens final game as White Sox manager. Rookie DylanAxelrod threw six shutout innings to earn his first major league win and TylerFlowers hit a three-run homer for Chicago. Guillen met with White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf earlier in the day. Before the game, Guillen said he repeated his request for a contract extension and expected Reinsdorf to take a couple of days to make a decision about his future. The club then announced right after the victory that Guillen had been released from his contract per his request. "I know theyre not going to forget me," Guillen said. "They cant. They walk through the ballpark and my picture is there. I hope they dont take it down." Lost amid the frenzy surrounding Guillens surprising departure was Axelrod, who allowed three hits and struck out six. By the time the media was allowed into the clubhouse, Axelrod (1-0) had already departed. Santos got the last three outs to become the eighth White Sox pitcher to record 30 saves. It also was his first save since Sept. 6. DavidCooper hit a two-run double to get Toronto within one before Santos walked EricThames and JoseBautista to load the bases. But Santos then struck out Lind on his 44th pitch to end the game. "We came back and battled off Santos at the end, but Axelrod early just kept us off balance and didnt give us anything," Blue Jays bench coach Don Wakamatsu said. "What a huge hit by Cooper coming off the bench. (Santos) is a tough closer. To come up and hit a double and get us within a run. It was a disappointing loss but a good comeback at the end." Wakamatsu ran the club with manager John Farrell away to attend to a family matter. He is expected to manage on Tuesday. Flowers made a rare start at first base and hit his fourth homer with two on in the second. DayanViciedo roped an RBI double in the seventh and A.J.Pierzynski added two singles for Chicago. Torontos DustinMcGowan (0-2) allowed three runs and four hits in four innings, leaving after 73 pitches. McGowan has been limited to a strict pitch count as he works his way back from two shoulder surgeries. "I think the one thing weve seen since hes come back to start is he gets stronger as his outing goes along," Wakamatsu said. "I think today was a similar case where he felt around with his mechanics a little early. Its the first time hes pitched in cold weather in three years." Lind drove in Torontos first run with a groundout in the eighth. MikeMcCoy stole two bases for the Blue Jays, and MarkTeahen reached base three times in his first game against his former club. The White Sox won for just the seventh time in their last 28 games against the Blue Jays. Toronto needs to win the last two games of the series to finish the season with a winning record for the fifth time in six years. Axelrod pitched out of jam in the fifth, getting McCoy on a foul popup and striking out Thames with runners on second and third. White Sox slugger AdamDunn went 0 for 2 with two walks and two strikeouts, dropping his average to .160 with 174 strikeouts. Dunn needs nine plate appearances in the final two games to finish with the worst qualifying batting average in big league history, surpassing Rob Deers .179 mark in 1991. Dunn is 1 for 16 with 10 strikeouts against Toronto this season. NOTES: In the last series of the season, the Blue Jays are making their only trip to Chicago in the 2011 season. Chicago and Toronto havent played each other since May 29 and hadnt met in Chicago since May 9, 2010. ... ColbyRasmus (flu-like symptoms) and AdamLind (birth of his child) both returned the Toronto lineup. ... Bautista went 0 for 3 with three walks after leaving Sundays game early because of a knee injury. Bautista leads the Yankees CurtisGranderson by two home runs in his bid to become the first player to lead the big leagues in homers in consecutive seasons since MarkMcGwire in 1998 and 1999. ... The Blue Jays will send HendersonAlvarez to the mound on Tuesday to face MarkBuehrle, who could be making his last start for the White Sox. Buehrle will be a free agent after the season. Randall Cobb Womens Jersey . The deal, filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, calls for the NCAA to toughen return-to-play rules for players who receive head blows and create a $70 million fund to pay for thousands of current and former athletes to undergo testing to determine whether they suffered brain trauma while playing football and other contact sports. James Starks Elite Jersey . Turns out, the alternative wasnt any fun for Malone, either. Durant scored 30 points and embraced a role as a facilitator by finishing with nine assists to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder past Sacramento 108-93 on Sunday night.VANCOUVER - Rory MacDonald says he doesnt feel any added pressure to carry Canadas mixed martial arts torch in Georges St-Pierres absence. In fact, his mentors hiatus from the UFC makes McDonalds quest to reach the top of the welterweight division a little easier. "It opens things up for me to get to where I want to be," MacDonald said this week. "Ive learned a lot from Georges. No extra pressure, Ive just got to be myself." It remains to be seen if St-Pierre will return to the sport he dominated, but the 24-year-old MacDonald who goes by the nickname "Ares" is intent on continuing his climb this Saturday at UFC 174 when he takes on Tyron (The Chosen One) Woodley in the co-main event at Rogers Arena. Both men have their sights set on Johny Hendricks welterweight title, with MacDonald ranked as the No. 2 challenger and Woodley at No. 3. Shy in front of the media glare, MacDonald said he just has to continue working on what has brought him to this point. "I think people like me for who I am," said MacDonald, who was born in Quesnel, B.C., but now trains in Montreal. "Ive gotten to the position Im in because of being who I am a couple stumbles along the way but I feel like Im hitting my stride right now." One of those stumbles actually came in Vancouver when MacDonald (16-2) lost at UFC 115 in June 2010 to Carlos Condit. His only other defeat came to Robbie Lawler in a split decision at UFC 167 in November, but MacDonald rebounded to beat Demian Maia in a spplit decision at UFC 170 in February. Aaron Rodgers Elite Jersey. "You pick and choose your spots. You play between defence and offence against other good fighters," said MacDonald. "I just had a great training camp. No injuries and things went great. I felt great in my sparrings and my techniques are sharp." Woodley (13-2), a two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, has just three UFC bouts under his belt, including a technical knockout victory over Condit at UFC 171 in March. MacDonald said if he fights to his strengths against Woodley, he should come out on top. "I know the techniques. They come out as instinct right now," said MacDonald. "Ive trained them so much. So Ive just got to go in there and do my thing. "Im ready for everything. Last time here was unbelievable, the response I got. If its the same, more, or less Ill be ready." In a era where athletes in all sports are constantly looking for an edge, MacDonald said he doesnt study video of his opponents before a fight, preferring to use his instincts. "Ive fought a lot of people in the past never seen them, never heard of them and had to deal with their problems," he said. "I find it easier to do it like that, to react in the cage." MacDonald is hoping for the same against Woodley on Saturday night. "Hes a great fighter. To beat him you have to be tricky and use good techniques," he said. "I feel very confident in my abilities and the solutions I have." ' ' '

SINGAPORE -- Panuphol Pittayarat of Thailand made nine birdies in a blemish-free round of 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead at The Championship at Laguna National on Thursday. Doug Gilmour Blues Jersey . Panuphol, ranked just 451st in the world, was a stroke ahead of a group of four golfers in second -- Scott Jamieson, David Lipsky, Kim Byung-jun and local favourite Quincy Quek. The tournament, a co-sanctioned European and Asian tour event formerly called the Ballantines Championship, was moved from South Korea to Singapore just three weeks ago after it lost its title sponsor and the promoter failed to reach an agreement with a suitable golf venue. Defending champion BrettRumford of Australia was in joint-64th place after a 70, level with Frances Alexander Levy, who won his maiden European Tour title Sunday at the China Open. The 21-year-old Panuphol earned his best European Tour result late last year when he finished tied for 18th at the Hong Kong Open. But hes missed his last three cuts on the Asian Tour. "I didnt see it coming but it did come," he said of his 63 on Thursday. "Im feeling good about my game right now. I was just trying to hit straight out there. I managed to hole a lot of putts and a lot of them were unexpected." Jamieson, who won his first European Tour title last year at the Nelson Mandela Championship in South Africa, also had nine birdies in his round, including a difficult chip shot from the bunker on the par-3 No. 17, his eighth hole. He had one bogey on the par-4 16th. "Ive been hitting the ball well the last couple of weeks, so it was nice to get a round where it all came together," he said. "There was just the one mistake with the three-putt on 16, but it was pretty far away and pace putting is always difficult in Asia with the grain. Its not what someone from Scotland is used to." Panuphols countryman, Arnond Vongvanij, was in a share of the lead at 9 under until taking a double bogey on No. 8, his 17th hole, to fall back to a share of sixth place on 65. Spains Rafa Cabrera-Bello, who has three top-10 finishes this year, was another shot back in a group at 6 under. Laguna National hosted the Singapore Masters from 2002-07 and the Singapore Open from 2009-12. David Backes Jersey . Johnson spent the last five seasons with Pittsburgh after being taken in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. He played in 52 games with 26 starts, totalling 22 catches for 216 yards and a touchdown. Patrik Berglund Jersey . Showing more spark after not taking enough challenging shots on goal in their 1-0 loss Friday night, the Bruins had 18 shots in the first period after managing just 25 in the entire opener. LukeGlendening cut Bostons lead to 2-1 at 13:20 of the second period before MilanLucic scored late in the second and ZdenoChara added a power-play goal early in the third. PHILADELPHIA -- Nikolaj Ehlers is a two-sport star who credits his time on the soccer pitch with helping his game on the ice. Ehlers, who played for Denmarks national team until he was 14 before concentrating on hockey, was selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the ninth overall pick in the NHL draft on Friday night. The five-foot-10, 176-pounder was fourth in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 104 points (49-55) in 63 games with the Halifax Mooseheads this past season. He feels that his soccer skills have helped him develop more speed on the ice, one of the key elements of his game. "I think Im a fast forward," he said. "I think I have a lot of speed I can use on the wing. I like to set up some nice plays and I like to score some goals." Ehlers was the first player from the QMJHL to be selected in the 2014 draft. The 18-year-old took the leagues rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year honours. Ehlers also had 28 points (11-17) in 16 post-season games for the Mooseheads. "I found myself becoming more of a fan when I watched him play," said Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. "Any time he got the puck, you felt like something was going to happen. "Hes not the biggest guy when it comes to sizze, but he plays with such good hockey sense that he knows when to take an opportunity to go, and not really put himself in harms way to try to make a play. Patrik Berglund Blues Jersey. " Ehlers speed helps compensate for his relatively slight build. "He doesnt have a lot of weight on him so youre going to want him to continue to grow, but hes a pretty strong player," said Cheveldayoff. "The way he plays the game and the way he moves out there, he has some hidden strength that a lot of players maybe his size dont." Ehlers said he planned to hit the gym over the summer. "Obviously, Ive got to get a little bit bigger and stronger," he said. "I can use my speed to get out of the rough time on the ice, but Im not afraid to get hit or hit somebody." Cheveldayoff said the youngster is a well-rounded individual. "His hockey sense is right up there," he said. "And his characters not far behind. This is a player that every time we had an opportunity to meet with him, we didnt want the interview to end. Hes going to be an exciting player for a long time." Ehlers father, Heinz, was drafted 30 years ago by the New York Rangers (No. 188 overall). He spent his 16-season pro career in Europe. ' ' '

Mesa, AZ (Sports Network) - Welington Castillo singled in Bobby Scales in the 10th inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 Cactus League win over the San Francisco Giants. Arizona Cardinals Authentic Jerseys . Scales went 2-for-4 with a run driven in for the Cubs, whose starter, Randy Wells, allowed just two hits and one run in six innings while fanning seven. Shane Loux got the start for San Francisco and yielded a run on two hits in 3 2/3 frames. Mike Fontenot drove in a run in defeat. Rashad Johnson Cardinals Jersey .Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres signed forward NicolasDeslauriers to a two-year contract on Monday. Larry Fitzgerald Cardinals Jersey . Doneil Henry, the man who scored Toronto FCs last-gasp game winner Saturday, knows that probably better than anyone. DETROIT -- If the Texas Rangers are going to overcome the major injuries that have threatened their season, they likely will need significant contributions from rookies like Nick Martinez and RougnedOdor. Martinez pitched six sharp innings for his first major league win, and Odor drove in five runs with a pair of triples to lead the Rangers to a 12-2 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. AdrianBeltre and DonnieMurphy homered for Texas, which put slugger PrinceFielder on the disabled list this week with a neck problem that is expected to end his season. "Im convinced that I can go out and do it," Martinez said. "I think thats what separates major leaguers and minor leaguers, is that complete trust that they have in themselves." Martinez (1-1) allowed a run and eight hits. The Rangers scored four runs in the fourth, plus three each in the sixth and seventh. RickPorcello (7-2) had won his last six starts before being knocked around by Texas. He allowed eight runs and 12 hits in 5 1-3 innings. Detroit has lost five of six. LeonysMartin, Murphy and Odor -- the last three hitters in the Texas batting order -- combined for eight hits, eight RBIs and seven runs. Odor had four hits after going 6 for 31 in his first 11 games. "It was nice to see the bottom of the order come through like that," Murphy said. "Its fun, because normally you dont see that. Odour, the day he had, that was unbelievable, and Martin, it was fun watching him too. Im glad that we were productive for the team today." Martinez was making his fourth start for the Rangers, and the 23-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.14. With Texas ahead 5-1 in the fifth, the Tigers put two men on, but Martinez got ToriiHunter to hit into an inning-ending force play with MiguelCabrera looming on deck. Martinez ended his day by getting NickCastellanos to line into a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth. The AL Central-leading Tigers have hit a rough patch. Theyve allowed 45 runs in the last six games, with their normally sturdy starting rotation suddenly looking vulnerable. Andre Ellington Authentic Jersey. For the second time in three days, Detroit used knuckleballing infielder DannyWorth to pitch the final inning of a blowout loss. Worth struck out two against Texas on Thursday, but on Saturday he allowed an RBI double to MichaelChoice. "I dont want to turn it into a sideshow with a position player pitching, but weve got to do something to rest some of the arms in the bullpen," Tigers manager BradAusmus said. Detroit actually scored first on an RBI double by RajaiDavis in the second, but Porcello allowed four runs with two out in the fourth. ChrisGimenez hit an RBI double and scored on a single by Martin. The 20-year-old Odor added a two-run triple. Beltre hit a solo homer in the fifth, and Murphys two-run shot the following inning made it 7-1. MitchMoreland added an RBI double in the sixth, and Odor hit his second triple in the seventh -- this one with the bases loaded. Texas came into the day having used 39 players this season, tied for the most in baseball. Outfielder Shin-SooChoo was pulled in the sixth Saturday with a sore left ankle, although the Rangers said the move was precautionary. By then, Texas had broken the game open. The Rangers finished with 19 hits. NOTES: Detroits IanKinsler and VictorMartinez and Texas AlexRios had three hits each. ... Detroit RHP CoreyKnebel made his major league debut in relief of Porcello. He allowed the three-run triple by Odor. ... Kinsler extended his hitting streak to 10 games. ... There were replay overturns at first, second and third, two on challenges by the Tigers. WINNIPEG -- DustinByfugliens versatility is proving to be highly valuable to the Winnipeg Jets. Kevin Shattenkirk Jersey . Byfuglien, who was moved to forward from defence earlier this month but sometimes plays both positions in a game, scored the winner in a 5-4 overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. The six-foot-five Byfuglien took a pass from captain AndrewLadd and fired a wrist shot over goalie JonathanBerniers glove 2:44 into the extra frame for his 12th goal of the season. "They (the Leafs) backed off a little bit," Byfuglien said. "They didnt know we were trying to regroup type of thing. "It was tough for them, but I just got the puck on the net." Rookie MarkScheifele, defenceman ZachBogosian and both BlakeWheeler and BryanLittle on the power play scored for the Jets, who outshot the Leafs 31-27 after regulation play and 32-28 following overtime. Little also had an assist and Ladd added two assists for Winnipeg (24-24-5). Toronto (27-21-6) got a power-play goal from defenceman DionPhaneuf, centre TroyBodie scored his second of the season and defenceman TimGleason marked his first goal of the year. Jets coach Paul Maurice said Byfugliens versatility is a big plus for the team. "Its a huge, huge luxury," Maurice said. "It makes us run our bench. It makes my pairs right coming off the bench up front. You get all your best offensive players on the ice that way." Byfuglien was moved to forward by former coach Claude Noel in his last game before he was fired and replaced by Maurice on Jan. 12. The Jets are 5-1 under Maurice, but they let a 4-1 second-period lead get away that seemed a little reminiscent of the past. PhilKessel tied the game 4-4 with 1:33 left in the third period on a sharp-angled shot that beat goalie OndrejPavelec. "I know the scoring progression is going to say we blew a 4-1 lead, but I didnt feel we didnt generate anything and that they were all over us," Maurice said. "They had some flurries, they have some real good players. And we had some great chances, too." Little said his team didnt lose its confidence as the scoreboard shifted. "Its never fun when you start to let a team back in the game," Little said. "When they scored that fourth (goal), I tell you we handled it real well. We stayed pretty level-headed. Even if it took longer than 60 minutes, I thought we felt we were going to get the job done." Pavelec stop 24 of the 28 shots he faced. JamesReimer started for the Leafs, but let in four goals on 18 shots and was replaced by Bernier midway through the second period. Bernier stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced. "We felt that it would be the decision to let a guy play in his hometown," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said of the decision to go with Reimer, who was born in Morweena, Man. The Jets went up 2-0 early in the first period after scoring on their first and fourth shots of the game. Toronto coughed up the puck in its own end and Jets forward EvanderKane got it and sent a pass to Scheifele. Reimer got a piece of Scheifeles shot, but not enough as the Jets went up 1-0 at 3:10 on the rookies 10th goal of the season. Winnipeg made good on its first power play of the game, courtesy of a hooking penalty on Leafs defenceman Morgan Reilly. Pavelec got things started with a pass out to defenceman JacobTrouba, who then sent the puck to Wheeler just outside Torontos blue-line. Wheeler raced in alone on Reimer and put a shot through his pads at 6:34. "Obviously, the first two goals were goals that I thought that were scored in the middle of the net and those are tough ones," Carlyle said. "I contemplated whether to do something at that point, but I felt get him through the period and give him an opportunity to fight and battle himself back. "And then he did that because he came out in the second period and made some big stops. He made a stop on a breakaway. He battled hard for our hockey club." A five-goal second period saw each team scoring twice in a span of 3:01. The Leafs used a power play for Phaneufs fifth goal of the season, a long one-timer straight at the net through traffic at 6:13 while Jets defenceman KeatonEllerby was in the box for boarding. Littles 17th goal of the season came just over a minute later as he redirected a shot by Toby Enstrom to make it 3-1. Bogosians shot 37 seconds later beat a partially screened Reimer and sent the goalie to the bench in favour of Bernier, who entered his 100th career game with his team down 4-1. "Well, it was more mercy because one was a deflection and the another one was posted in," Carlyle said. "We just needed a little bit of a change." Toronto made it 4-2 on Bodies goal 61 seconds later at 9:14 and then made it a one-goal deficit at 16:44 when Gleasons shot hit Trouba and went through Pavelecs pads. JamesvanRiemsdyk assisted on Kessels goal and saw a silver lining in falling just short of a successful comeback. "We got down and were able to battle back and showed character," van Riemsdyk said. "But again, well take the point." Al Macinnis Jersey . Alexander Steen Blues Jersey . The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. Tickets for Monday will be honoured Tuesday. The forecast Monday calls for heavy rain throughout the day. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Sabres enforcer JohnScott was suspended indefinitely by the NHL on Thursday. And teammate PatrickKaletas appeal to reduce his 10-game suspension was denied by league Commissioner Gary Bettman. Scott was suspended pending a disciplinary hearing for a blindside hit to the head that levelled Boston Bruins forward Lou Eriksson in Buffalos 5-2 loss a day earlier. Scott has been given the opportunity to attend an in-person hearing, which has not yet been scheduled. The hearing is offered when a suspension has the potential to exceed five games. The news didnt get any better for Buffalo, which is now down two roster spots because of suspended players. Bettman issued a 17-page decision outlining why he turned down Kaletas appeal to reduce a 10-game ban for an illegal hit to the head on Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman JackJohnson on Oct. 10. In supporting league disciplinarian BrendanShanahans initial ruling, Bettman noted Kaleta was a repeat offender, having been previously suspended three times, and added that Kaleta could have avoided hitting Johnson. "I do conclude that he could have and should have avoided the hit altogether," Bettman wrote. "As Mr. Shanahan testified at the hearing, I think there was also the option of not throwing the check. That (is) always an option." Kaleta wasnt penalized, and Johnson did not miss any ice time. Kaleta has already missed six games and stands to lose $152,439 in salary. He has one last option to appeal Bettmans ruling by taking his case to neutral discipline arbitrator James Oldham. Scotts suspension came aftter he was issued a match penalty for charging and ejected for his hit on Eriksson early in the third period of Bostons 5-2 win Wednesday. Jaden Schwartz Blues Jersey. Eriksson was skating through the neutral zone and had just dumped the puck into the Sabres zone when Scott skated in from the players right and struck him with a shoulder to the face. Eriksson was dazed and didnt return. He stayed in Buffalo overnight as a precaution. The Bruins released a statement from general manager Peter Chiarelli, who said "he has been diagnosed with a concussion and will be out indefinitely." Chiarelli also said Eriksson returned to Boston earlier Thursday and was examined by team doctors. Scott was apologetic after practice Thursday. He called it "a bad play" and added he didnt mean to aim for Erikssons head. "I kind of feel really upset," he said, noting that he texted an apology to Eriksson. "I was sick to my stomach last night knowing what happened. And watching the video, I kind of regret the whole situation." The Sabres (1-9-1), off to their worst start in franchise history, made two roster moves Thursday in preparing for a two-game road swing that opens at Florida on Friday. Fourth-line forward CodyMcCormick was activated after missing two games with a leg injury. The Sabres waived forward KevinPorter for assignment to the minors, according to a person familiar with the move. The person informed The Associated Press of the decision on the condition of anonymity because coach Ron Rolston declined to say how the team was going to free up a roster spot to add McCormick. Topic : I began a four-day train trip to Chicago

On August 12, we went back to Yellowstone National Park for the only public business of our vacation, as I signed an agreement that stopped a planned gold mine on property adjacent to the park. The agreement was the welcome result of cooperative efforts by the mining company, citizens groups, and members of Congress and the White House environmental team, headed by Katie McGinty.

On the eighteenth, Hillary, Chelsea, and UGG Boots uk on sale I were in New York City for a big party celebrating my fiftieth birthday at Radio City Music Hall. Afterward, I was saddened to learn that the plane carrying the equipment back to Washington from our Wyoming stay had crashed, killing all nine people on board.

The next day we joined Al and Tipper Gore in Tennessee, where we celebrated the birthday Tipper and I shared by helping to rebuild two rural churches, womens UGG boots sale one white and one black, that had been burned in the recent rash of church burnings.

In the last week of the month, the nations attention turned to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. By then our campaign, chaired by Peter Knight, was well organized, and it was working closely with the White House through Doug Sosnick and Harold Ickes, who had overseen our convention organization. I was excited about going to Chicago because it was Hillarys hometown, Uggs clearance had played a pivotal role in my 1992 victory, and had made good use of many of my most important initiatives in education, economic development, and crime control.

On August 25, in Huntington, West Virginia, Chelsea and I began a four-day train trip to Chicago. Hillary had gone ahead of us to be there when the convention opened. We had leased a wonderful old train we dubbed the 21st Century Express for the ugg womens boots sale trip through Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana to Chicago. We made fifteen stops along the way and slowed down as we passed through small towns so that I could wave to the people who had gathered by the tracks. I could feel from the excitement of the crowds that the train was connecting with the Ugg boots outlet American people just as the bus tours had in 1992, and I could see from the expressions on peoples faces that they felt much better about the condition of the country and about their own lives. When we stopped in Wyandotte, Michigan, for an education event, two children introduced me by reading The Little Engine That Could. The book and their enthusiastic reading captured the return of Americas innate optimism and self-confidence.

Topic : hold most of the states

My main target was Florida. If I could win there and hold most of the states I had won in 92, the election was over. I had worked hard in Florida for four years: helping the Ugg boots sale state recover from Hurricane Andrew; holding the Summit of the Americas there; announcing the relocation of the U.S. militarys Southern Command from Panama to Miami; working to restore the Everglades; and even making inroads into the Cuban-American community, which normally had given Republicans more than 80 percent of its womens tall UGGS on sale votes in presidential elections ever since the Bay of Pigs. I was also blessed with a good organization in Florida and the strong support of Governor Lawton Chiles, who had great rapport with voters in the more conservative areas of central and northern Florida. Those people liked Lawton in part because he hit back when attacked. As he said, No redneck wants a dog that wont bite. In UGG Boots Clearance for women early September, Lawton went with me to north Florida to campaign and to honor retiring Congressman Pete Peterson, who had spent six and a half years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and whom I had recently nominated to be our first ambassador there UGG boots outlet online since the end of the war.

I spent most of the rest of the month in states Id won in 92. On a western swing, I also campaigned in Arizona, a state that hadnt voted for a Democrat for President since 1948, but that I thought I could carry because of its growing Hispanic population and the discomfort of many of the states moderate and traditional conservative voters with the more extreme politics of the Republican Congress.

On the sixteenth, I received the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police. The FOP UGG boots outlet store usually endorsed Republicans for President, but our White House had worked with them for four years to put more police on the streets, take guns out of the hands of criminals, and ban cop-killer bullets; they wanted four more years of that kind of cooperation.

I ended the month by signing a health-care appropriations bill that ended so-called drive-by deliveries, by guaranteeing a minimum of forty-eight hours of coverage to mothers and newborns; provided UGGS on sale usa medical assistance to children of Vietnam veterans who were born with spina bifida, as I mentioned earlier; and required the same annual and lifetime coverage limits in health insurance policies for mental and physical illness. The breakthrough in mental-health care was a tribute not only to UGGS for cheap online usa the work of mental-health advocacy groups but also to the personal efforts of Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico, Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, and Tipper Gore, whom I had named my official advisor on mental-health policy.

I spent the first two days of October with Netanyahu, Arafat, and King Hussein, who had agreed to join us to try to get the peace process back on track. At the end of our talks, Arafat and Netanyahu Ugg boots clearance asked me to field all the press questions. I said that while we had not yet resolved the tunnel issue, both sides had agreed to begin immediate talks in the region with a view toward ending the violence and returning to the peace process. In our meeting, Netanyahu had reaffirmed his commitment to implement the agreements made before he took office, including the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Hebron. Not long afterward, the tunnel UGG Boots Sale Clearance was sealed again, consistent with the commitment both parties had made to do nothing to change the status quo in Jerusalem until it was negotiated.

On the third, I was back on the campaign trail again, stopping for a rally in Buffalo, New York, a city that had always UGG boots womens classic short been good to me, on the way to Chautauqua, to prepare for my first presidential debate with Bob Dole in Hartford, Connecticut, on October 6. Our whole team was there, including my media advisor, Michael Sheehan. George Mitchell came in to play Bob Dole in the mock debates. He cleaned my clock at first, but I got better with practice. In between sessions, Erskine Bowles and I got in a round of golf. My golf game was getting better. In June, I had finally scored below 80 for the first time, but I still couldnt beat Erskine when his game was on.

Topic : had become close friends of mine

By the time I got to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, it was 8 p.m. I really wanted to be there for Tom Harkin, who was in a tight race for reelection. Tom had strongly supported me in the Senate, and after womens UGG boots the 92 primary he and his wife, Ruth, a lawyer who was serving with the administration, had become close friends of mine.

The last stop of the night was Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Democratic congressman Tim Johnson had a real chance to unseat incumbent Republican Larry Pressler. Both Johnson and his chief supporter, Senator Tom Daschle, had been very good to me. Ugg boots clearance As Senate minority leader, Daschle had been invaluable to the White House during the budget fights and the shutdown; when he asked me to come to South Dakota, I couldnt say no.

It was nearly midnight when I got up in the Sioux Falls Arena and Convention Center to speak at the last rally of the last campaign I will ever run. Because it was my final speech, I Uggs on sale gave them the whole load on the record, the budget fight, and what I wanted to do for the next four years. Since I was in a rural state Uggs outlet like Arkansas, I told them a joke. I said the Republicans budget reminded me of the story of a politician who wanted to ask a farmer to vote for him but was reluctant to come into his yard because a barking dog was there. The politician asked the farmer, Does your dog bite? No, the farmer replied. When the politician walked through the yard toward the farmer, the dog bit him. I thought you said your dog didnt bite! he shouted. The farmer replied, Son, that aint my dog. The budget was their dog.

The election went as Mark Penn ugg womens boots sale predicted: there was a record low turnout, and I won 49 to 41 percent. The electoral vote was 379 to 159, as I lost three states I had carried in 1992, Montana, Colorado, and Georgia, and won two new ones, Arizona and Florida, for a net gain of nine electoral votes.

Topic : subtle differences in the state

Underneath the aggregate numbers, subtle differences in the state totals between 1992 and 1996 revealed the extent to which cultural factors influenced the election in some states, while more traditional economic and social matters dominated in others. All competitive elections are determined by such shifts, and in 1996 they told me a lot about what mattered to different groups of Americans. For example, in Pennsylvania, a state Cheap UGGS with many NRA members and pro-life voters, my winning percentage was the same as it had been in 1992, thanks to a bigger margin in Philadelphia and a strong vote in Pittsburgh, while my vote went down in the rest of the state because of guns and my veto of the partial-birth abortion bill. In Missouri, the same factors cut my victory margin almost in half, from 10 to 6 percent. I still got a majority in Arkansas, but my UGG boots sale victory margin was slightly smaller than in 1992; in Tennessee, the margin was cut from 4.5 to 2.5 percent.

In Kentucky, tobacco and guns cut our margin from 3 to 1 percent. For the same reasons, though I was ahead in North Carolina all the way to the end, I lost by 3 percent. In Colorado, I went from a 4 percent victory in 1992 to UGG boots cheap a 1.5 percent loss because the 92 Perot voters in the West were more likely to vote Republican in 96 and because the Republicans had gained 100,000 registered voters on the Democrats since 1992, partly as a result of the large number of Christian Right organizations that had located their headquarters in the state. In Montana, I lost this time around largely because, as in Colorado, the lower vote for Perot meant more votes for Senator Dole than for me.

In Georgia, the last poll had me ahead by 4 Uggs clearance percent; I lost by 1 percent. The Christian Coalition deserved a lot of credit for that; in 1992, they had cut my margin from 6 percent to under 1 percent with heavy distribution of their voting guides in conservative churches the Sunday before the election. Democrats had worked black churches like that for years, but the Christian Coalition, Uggs clearance at least in Georgia, was particularly effective at it, changing the outcome by 5 percent in both 1992 and 1996. I was disappointed to lose Georgia, but glad that Max Cleland survived by getting a few more white votes than I did. The South was tough because of the cultural issues; the only southern state to give me a substantially larger victory margin in 1996 was Louisiana, which went from 4.5 to 12 percent.

Topic : 1 percent victory in Nevada

By contrast, my winning percentage increased a good deal in less culturally conservative or more economically sensitive states. My margin over the Republicans was up 10 percent or more in 1996 over 1992 in Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, UGG Boots Clearance and Rhode Island. We held on to our big 92 margins in UGG boots outlet Illinois, Minnesota, Maryland, and California, and substantially increased the edge in Michigan and Ohio. Despite the gun issue, I also gained 10 percent over my 92 margin in New Hampshire. And I held on for a 1 percent victory in Nevada, largely because of my opposition to dumping Americas nuclear waste there without scientific evidence that it was safe to do so, and the constant publicity my position received thanks to my friend and Georgetown classmate Brian Greenspun, the president and editor of the Las Vegas Sun, who felt UGG boots outlet passionately about the issue.

On balance, I was happy with the results. I had won more electoral votes than in 1992, and four of the seven Senate candidates I had campaigned for won: Tom Harkin, Tim Johnson, John Kerry, and, in Louisiana, Mary Landrieu. But the fact that my share of the vote UGG Boots uk was considerably lower than my job rating, my personal approval rating, the percentage of people who said they felt comfortable with my presidency, was a sober reminder of the power of cultural issues like guns, gays, and abortion, especially among white married couples in the South, the UGG Boots uk sale intermountain West, and the rural Midwest, and among white men all across the country. All I could do was to keep searching for common ground, keep trying to temper the bitter partisanship in Washington, and keep doing my best as President.

Baseball season is just around the corner and TSN. Ted Ginn Jr Cardinals Jersey .ca has you covered for whos in, whos out and what to expect from all 30 teams. Check in every day this week for two new division previews, finishing up with Scott MacArthurs look at the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Heres what to expect out of the National League Central in 2014. Chicago Cubs GM:Jed Hoyer Manager:Rick Renteria 2013:66-96, fifth in AL Central. Did not qualify for playoffs. That was Then:2013 capped the worst two-year stretch in the North Siders 137-year history and cost Dale Sveum his job. Nobody was expecting the Cubs to be world-beaters last season, but regression was certainly not believed to be in the cards for some of the teams better players. This was epitomized in the season of shortstop StarlinCastro. Once viewed as a cornerstone of the franchise, Castro was given a seven-year extension in the summer of 2012 and proceeded to have a miserable 2013, hitting a career-low .245/.284/.347 with only 45 RBI. First baseman AnthonyRizzo was simply too streaky and average at best, but the Cubs still love his upside. On the mound, the four-year, $52 million deal given to EdwinJackson paid no early dividends. Though, he was better in the second-half, the signing already seems like a mistake. After a breakthrough 2012, former Notre Dame wide receiver JeffSamardzija took a step back in 2013 and has been the focus of trade talks since last years deadline. The bullpen was simply miserable, third-worst in the NL, with a staggering 26 blown saves. This is Now:There will be improvement at Wrigley in 2014, but it will be a modest one. Former San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria has been handed the managerial reins, knowing Hoyer from his days in San Diego, and will be given time to work with his very young team. The team expects Rizzo to bounce back and are high on MikeOlt, acquired from the Texas Rangers last season in the MattGarza deal. Once hampered by vision problems since a concussion in 2012, Olt is healthy outside of some shoulder soreness in spring training. A top-25 prospect prior to the 2013 season, Olt isnt expected to usurp third base from LuisValbuena, but could force himself into the conversation at the very least. Top prospect JavierBaez isnt ready to go in 2014, so Castro will be afforded the opportunity to prove that 2013 was a blip on the radar and not indicative of a downward trend. After ScottFeldman, traded at the deadline to the Baltimore Orioles for PedroStrop and JakeArrieta, proved to be a fine reclamation project, the Cubs hope to have another in JasonHammel. If the 32-year-old can shake off the nagging elbow injuries that hampered his 2013 and return to the form from the previous season, the Cubs may be able to parlay his cheap, one-year deal into a Feldmanesque haul. The bullpen shouldnt be as porous as last season, either. Both CarlosMarmol and KevinGregg, responsible for most of those blown saves, are gone and JoseVeras is a much more reliable stopper. Whos In?:SP JasonHammel (one-year deal), RP JoseVeras (one-year deal), OF JustinRuggiano (acquired from MIA), IF EmilioBonifacio (minor-year deal) and RP WesleyWright (one-year deal). Whos Out?:C DionerNavarro (signed with TOR), RP CarlosMarmol (signed with MIA), RP KevinGregg (unsigned) and OF BrianBogusevic (traded to MIA). Cincinnati Reds GM:Walt Jocketty Manager:BryanPrice 2013:90-72, third in NL Central. Lost to Pittsburgh in National League Wild Card Game. That was Then:The Reds made the playoffs for back-to-back years for the first time since 1994-95, thanks to sterling performances both at the plate and on the mound. Led by career production years from JayBruce and BrandonPhillips and another solid season from Etobicoke, Ontarios JoeyVotto, who led the National League with a .435 OBP, the team scored 698 runs, good for third in the NL and had a +109 run differential, also good for third in the Senior Circuit. The rotation, led by MatLatos and HomerBailey, posted a 3.38 ERA, third-best in the NL and was able to offset the loss of JohnnyCueto, who made three trips to the disabled list in 2013 and was virtually shut down in the second-half. AroldisChapman anchored an efficient bullpen with 38 saves. Still, the season ended sourly with the Wild Card loss to the divisional rival Pirates. Cueto, just returning to health, was tagged in the loss. And even with Phillipss record RBI haul of 103, the multiple time All-Star and Golden Glover posted career lows in average, OBP and stolen bases. This is Now:The Dusty Baker era is over. The sometimes cantankerous, sometimes controversial manager was let go after six seasons in charge in Cincinnati. Pitching coach BryanPrice takes over as the manager of a team that he is more than familiar with. Though much of the core remains for the Reds, the team will need to address a few key departures. Lead-off man Shin-SooChoo jumped ship to the Texas Rangers. Choo was a dynamo for the Reds last season, second in the NL with 107 runs scored. His spot at the top of the order will be taken by rookie speedster BillyHamilton. Hamilton, the new everyday centre fielder, is widely considered to be the fastest man in baseball and the fastest one in quite some time. The 23-year-old stole a ridiculous 155 bases in A-ball in 2012 and stole 75 last season for Triple-A Louisville. Las Vegas odds currently have the over/under for stolen bases in Hamiltons rookie year at 63.5. Still, the question is can Hamilton get on base to steal them and how big of a drop-off will the Reds experience from Choos production? The departure of BronsonArroyo to the Diamondbacks has been addressed in house by TonyCingrani, but Latoss late winter knee surgery could keep him off the mound until late in April. After that frightening line drive to the skull earlier in the month, Chapman is expected out until mid-to-late May. Former closer JonathanBroxton will spell the flame-thrower in that role until he returns. Whos In?: C BrayanPena (two-year deal) and IF SkipSchumaker (two-year deal with option) Whos Out?:OF Shin-SooChoo (signed with TEX), SP BronsonArroyo (signed with ARI) and C RyanHanigan (traded to TB) Milwaukee Brewers GM:Doug Melvin Manager:Ron Roenicke 2013:74-88, fourth in NL West. Did not qualify for playoffs. That was Then:Simply put, when you win six games in a month, chances are youre not going to contend and thats just what the Brewers did last May. Going 6-22 that month effectively eliminated the team from contention early, which softened the blow of serious injuries, the whole RyanBraun thing and finishing with their worst record in a decade. CoreyHart didnt play at all last season, blowing out one knee whilst rehabbing the other, while MatGamel re-tore the ACL that had him miss of all of 2012 in spring training, which made him - yep, you guessed it - miss all of 2013, as well. Braun, the 2011 NL MVP, was suspended in July for the remainder of the season (65 games) for his use of PEDs and his part in the Biogenesis scandal, something that the slugger had vehemently denied for over 18 months. Even when he did play in the first half of the season, it wasnt the same Braun. Whether or not the investigation weighed on him is debatable, but he was most certainly limited by a hand injury. On brighter notes, CarlosGomez and JeanSegura continued to improve and both were rewarded with All-Star nods. This is Now:The Brewers are probably better than last years record indicates (they were actually above .500 after the Braun suspension), but will be in tough to compete with last years three playoff teams in the division. With last years lead-off man NorichikaAoki traded to the Kansas City Royals and Gomez slotting into that spot, left fielder KhrisDavis will have the chance to play everyday. Davis impressed last season, in place of Braun, in 136 at-bats with a respectable .279, 11 HR and 27 RBI. If he can match that clip over a full season, its not far-fetched to suggest that Davis is capable of 30 home runs in 2014 on a team with considerable offensive upside. MattGarza was the offseasons biggest acquisition and the team hopes that he can help improve the NLs fifth-worst rotation ERA and eat up some innings so that the Brewers wont turn to 12 starters like they did in 2013. Considering Garzas recent injury history, perhaps, he isnt the best suited arm for that role. As for the bullpen, the back end is solid with closer JimHenderson, but depth could be an issue as the season goes on. Whos In?:SP MattGarza (four-year deal) and RP WillSmith (acquired from KC) Whos Out?: IF NorichikaAoki (traded to KC), IF YunieskyBetancourt (Japan) and RP Mike Gonzalez (unsigned) Pittsburgh Pirates GM:Neal Huntington Manager:Clint Hurdle 2013:94-68, second in NL Central. Lost to St. Louis in National League Divisional Series. That was Then:The Bucs made the post-season for the first time since 1992 and it was well deserved. Led by 2013 NL MVP AndrewMcCutchens .317, 21 HR, 84 RBI, 27 SB and .911 OPS line, the Pirates got career years from key players and were the surprise of the baseball world. PedroAlvarez would shared the NL lead in home runs with 36. StarlingMarte posted 41 stolen bases in his first full year in the Bigs. NeilWalker contributed at the plate and with his glove. RussellMartin chipped in offensively and ably called games behind the plates. On the mound, the team conceded the second-fewest runs in the NL. A.J.Burnetts late resurgence continued, becoming the first-ever Pirates right-hander to record 200+ strike-outs in a single season. FranciscoLirianos transition over to the National League was a successful one, notching 16 wins with a 3.02 ERA GerritCole starred in his rookie season, especially down the stretch with a 4-0 month of September. MarkMelancon ate innings out of the bullpen, struck out 70 in 71.0 IP with a 1.39 ERA and was rewarded with an All-Star appearance. JasonGrilli, aging like a fine wine, was a reliable stopper. Outside of an injury to WandyRodriguez, almost everything went right for the Pirates in 2013 and the team was MLBs feel-good story of 2013. This is Now:Can this team build on last years success? Thats the biggest question facing the Pirates in 2014 and the only question that matters. Considering this is almost the same team that excelled last season, the Bucs should continue to trend upwards, but they certainly will no longer take anybody by surprise. The old adage goes that you dont fix what aint broke and that holds true for the Pirates for the most part, but there were a couple of places that could have been upgraded upon in the offseason that werent. Right fielder TravisSnider had a poor 2013, his first full year with the Pirates, and he hasnt given any reason for optimism for 2014. GabySanchez is easily the poorest first baseman in the division and the Bucs really dont have anybody to push him. Burnetts loss will definitely be felt, but Rodriguez is once again healthy and will help pick up the slack. EdinsonVolquez, whos far from the dominant Reds starter of five years ago, has been hammered in spring training, yet the Pirates are confident that theres something left here and seem committed to this reclamation project. Whos In?:SP EdinsonVolquez (one-year deal) and C ChrisStewart (acquired from NYY) Whos Out?:SP A.J.Burnett (signed with PHI), 1B JustinMorneau (signed with COL), OF MarlonByrd (signed with PHI), C JohnBuck (signed with SEA) and 1B/OF GarrettJones (signed with MIA). St. Louis Cardinals GM:John Mozeliak Manager:MikeMatheny 2013:97-65, first in NL Central. Lost to Boston in World Series. That was Then:You can hardly call a National League pennant and a World Series berth disappointing, but thats how the Cards felt about how last season ended. Leading the World Series 2-1 and then dropping three-straight to go out in six games leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Still, the Cardinals were the class of the National League in 2013, holding off the surging Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the Senior Circuit and then beating them for the pennant. There was a lot to like about last years Cards. YadierMolina, while perhaps not having the season he did the year before, once again staked his claim to being the best catcher in the MLB with another fine season at the plate and calling games behind it. MattHolliday was his consistent self, eclipsing the 20-home run mark for the eighth time in his career. CarlosBeltran refused to age, hitting 20-plus home runs and knocking in 80-plus RBI both for the 11th time in his 16 years in the Bigs. The unheralded MattCarpenter took the NL by surprise to lead the league in hits (199), doubles (55) and runs (126). From the hill, AdamWainwright had his best ever season, matching his career total in wins (19) and complete games (five), while setting a personal best with 241.0 innings pitched (most in the MLB in 2013). The towering MichaelWacha was a revelation in his rookie season. Though his regular season stats were respectable (4-1 with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.1 WHIP), he was dominant in the post-season, going 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP, winning the NLCS MVP. The Cards were good, very good, but just not good enough for a team that holds itself to the highest possible standard in baseball. This is Now:Only two games away from a World Series title last year, this is arguably a superior Cardinals team and one that could be on track for glory in October. The loss of Beltran to the Yankees will certainly hurt, but the acquisitions of JhonnyPeralta and PeterBourjos will help offset the loss. Peralta can be counted on to eat up most, perhaps not all, of Beltrans run production, while Bourjoss noted speed gives the team a base-stealing threat at the top of the order. MarkEllis is a dependable veteran off the bench or can spell middle infielders if the need should arise. Though sent to their minor-league camp earlier this month, it would be a shock if top prospect Oscar Tavares, often favourably compared to VladimirGuerrero, doesnt make his presence felt at some point during the 2014 season. The pitching staff is virtually unchanged from last years postseason with JaimeGarcia likely out for most of the year, but the concern here will be to ensure that none of the teams inning-eating starters tires too soon or gets overworked too quickly. Long reliever JasonMotte is the only injury concern in the bullpen, but he should be back by late May. Whos In?:3B JhonnyPeralta (four-year deal), OF PeterBourjos (acquired from LAA), IF MarkEllis (one-year deal) Whos Out?:OF CarlosBeltran (signed with NYY), RP JohnAxford (signed with CLE), 3B DavidFreese (traded to LAA) and RP JakeWestbrook (retired). John Carlson Jersey . Garza, who signed a four-year, $50 million deal with the Milwaukee in the off-season, retired the Cubs in order in four of the first six innings. Kevin Minter Cardinals Jersey . Poyets immediate challenge is to produce Sunderlands first victory in the league, with the northeast club bottom with just one point from seven matches. "Trust me, believe, connect with the team," Poyet said after signing a two-year contract.FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS 1. GREIVISVASQUEZ (Raptors): Has been sensational for the Raps in the past few weeks. His confidence in his three-point shooting and his ability to make difficult shots in the lane have been huge. He runs the team well and plays with wonderful enthusiasm. Major pick-up as a back-up point guard and hes finally settled in to his role and comfort level in Toronto. Really fun/upbeat personality who loves the game and plays with a swagger. Fun to see it all coming together for him. 2. ALLENIVERSONS NO. 3 RETIRED IN PHILLY: In an otherwise gloomy season in Philadelphia, this was the definite highlight. Talk about a guy that absolutely carried his team and was the heart and soul of his franchise. Loved the passion and toughness he played with. When you think of great small guards who have ever played the game, hes right at the top of the list. His competitive spirit resonated throughout the teams he led and the city that adopted him. I think back to broadcasting the 2001 Raptors seven-game series in the Eastern Conference semi-finals against them and he was awesome. A complete joy to watch. Willed his team to the NBA Finals. Deserving honour. 3. NY KNICKS: I talk about AI and his competitive spirit and then I watch the Knicks vs. Bulls game on Sunday and just shake my head. The wheels have come off and Im not surprised one bit. When the Knicks were in Toronto twice during the pre-season I could sense from chatting with their folks an over-confidence about what they achieved last season and the feeling that they would just pick up where they left off. It aint that easy. Last season doesnt mean a thing - youve got to start off all over again. Complacency can be a killer. Whats the old linee? "Good is the enemy of great". Pat Tillman Authentic Jersey. Doubt the Knicks would ever be considered great but they sure were good last year. When you enjoy those good spoils of success and arent ready for the grind again it spells trouble. I feel bad for head coach Mike Woodson, its not like he hasnt called them and challenged them on things constantly. Losing battle right now. House cleaning coming. 4. JIMMERFREDETTE (Bulls): Nice pick-up for John Paxson and Gar Forman. This team is playing great yet lacks consistent offensive fire power. Wouldnt surprise me to see Jimmer earn some playing time in a few weeks after he gets adjusted to the new system. Remember last season, NateRobinson and MarcoBelinelli were huge for them off the bench as DJ Augustin has been this year. Jimmer will give them another three-point threat. Yes, hes got challenges defensively due to his size - he lacks lateral quicks - but he will compete his tail off and stick shots if he gets in. Im sure hell get a good look down the road this month. Solid under-the-radar move. 5. THABOSEFOLOSHA and KENDRICKPERKINS (Thunder): Both banged up right now in OKC and with the return of RussellWestbrook its been a revolving door around KevinDurant yet I think its all a blessing for their organization. Its been "Force Feed" time for ReggieJackson, StevenAdams, JeremyLamb and PerryJones and theyve developed folks that need to grow as players quickly in an elite environment. From April 15 onward when both injured guys will be back for the Playoffs, the depth and experience of these challenges will help this team become steadier and more consistent when the stakes are higher. CHARLOTTE, N. Warren Sapp Buccaneers Jersey .C. -- AlJefferson is doubtful for Game 4 Monday night against the Miami Heat due to a lingering foot injury, according to Bobcats coach Steve Clifford. Jefferson, the teams leading scorer and rebounder, has been hobbled since straining the plantar fascia in his left foot in the first quarter of Game 1. He didnt participate in Mondays shoot around. "Hes not close to where he was for the last two games," Clifford said. Clifford said in Game 3 Jeffersons foot got worse as the game progressed and having only one day off in between games didnt help his chances of being ready for Game 4. Jefferson hobbled noticeably Monday as he left the gym after watching teammates shoot around in practice. Jefferson said he feels as if hes "walking on needles." "I wouldnt wish this pain on anyone," Jefferson said. "Its the worst pain Ive ever dealt with in my career." Jefferson wouldnt rule himself out, saying hes taking things hour-to-hour. "Im seeing how its going to feel and go from there," Jefferson said. Miami leads the series 3-0 and can close out the Bobcats with a win Monday night in Charlotte. Clifford said BismackBiyombo is expected to start for Jefferson. That represents a major dropoff in production, particularly from the offensive end. Jefferson averaged 21.8 points and 10.8 rebound per game in his first season with the Bobcats, while Biyombo has never scored more than 14 points in a game. Biyombo has only played 15 minutes in the playoffs and scored one point. Jeffersons teammates said they respect his ability to get on the floor the past two games. "He has given us all he can," point guard KembaWalker said. "And I think down to a man we appreciate his effort. Hes been nothing but great for us. He has been playing really well and hes not 100 per cent." Said Clifford: "I know how badly Al wants to play. The most upset person about this is him. So its frustrating, but again its part of pro sports." Clifford said the Bobcats will play more five-man basketball using pick and rolls, rather than relying on Jefferson in the low post. Walker, the teams second-leading scorer, will be relied upon to help pick up the slack in Jeffersons absence. "We have to find better ways for Kemba to be on the attack," Clifford said. Jefferson said its frustrating that he worked so hard all season only to injure the foot in the first quarter of the playoffs. "This season has been a great season for all of the things we have done so far," Jefferson said. "We are going into the game tonight trying to win... Regardless of what may happen it has been a wonderful season and guys have a lot to be proud of for the things we have done this season. But we cant take any steps back. We have to continue to build and get better." Jefferson said he wont need surgery after the season. William Gholston Buccaneers Jersey . The Calgary Flames hope to put together a winning streak as they host the Phoenix Coyotes at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday night. Justin Houston Red Jersey . The Flames recently halted a two-game slide with Saturdays road victory over Los Angeles, giving Calgary its third win in six games after suffering through an 0-5-1 drought from Nov. 5-16. MikeCammalleris backhander with 23 seconds left lifted the Flames to a 2-1 win over the Kings on Saturday. Cammalleri took a pass from MikaelBacklund in front of the net and managed to shovel a backhander past BenScrivens as he fell to the ice. Flames rookie goaltender KarriRamo was able to hold strong the rest of the way to seal the win. BlairJones also scored and Ramo made 21 saves in the win, which came with many of the fathers of the Flames players in attendance at the Staples Center. "To get the win was special. We wanted to get a big one for them (the fathers) tonight, and against a good team," Cammalleri said. Calgary will try to make it two wins in a row on Wednesday, but the club hasnt been able to string together consecutive victories since beating Montreal and New Jersey on Oct. 9 and 11, respectively. That two-game stretch still stands as the Flames only winning streak of the season. MarkGiordano will be back in the lineup. Giordano has missed the last 18 games since sufferingabroken ankleon Oct. 21 in Los Angeles. Despite playing in only eight games in 2013-14, Giordano still ranks third in scoring among Calgary defensemen this season with nine points on two goals and seven assists. Beginning with tonights tilt, the Flames are playing two straight and four of their next five games at home. Calgary is 4-5-3 at the Saddledome this season. Phoenix recorded a 4-2 home win against the Flames on Oct. 22, but Calgary has claimed four of the past six encounters in this series overall and three straight at the Saddledome. Phoenix began a four-game trip in impressive fashion on Tuesday, as the Coyotes slammed the Edmonton Oilers, 6-2, at Rexall Place. MikkelBoedker and MikeRibeiro each had one goal and two assists to help Phoenix match its highest goal output of the season. The Coyotes also scored six times in a 6-3 triumph over visiting Tampa Bay on Nov. 16, but then lost three of their next four games before Tuesdays rout in Edmonton. RadimVrbata, ShaneDoan and DavidMoss each added one goal and an assist for the Coyotes and KeithYandle also lit the lamp. MikeSmith stopped 31-of-33 shots in the victory after yielding four goals on 35 shots in Saturdays 5-2 home loss to Chicago. "Obviously after the Chicago game, we wanted to make sure we came out and played more to our identity, especially on the road," said Coyotes coach Dave Tippett. "Were starting a tough trip, we wanted to come in and play well tonight. I thought for the most part, we did a lot of good things." Coyotes backup goaltender ThomasGreiss could give Smith a rest tonight by getting the start in the second game on back-to-back nights. Greiss has one career appearance against Calgary, as he took the loss for San Jose in a 4-1 setback on March 6 of last season. Phoenix is 7-5-2 on the road this season and will try to win its third straight as the guest in tonights clash at the Saddledome. The Coyotes will continue this swing with Fridays outing in Vancouver before completing the trip Tuesday in Colorado. Frankie Hammond Jersey . "I cant say much, we agreed not to say much, but talks are ongoing and Andrei wants to stay in Montreal," agent and former NHL player SergeiBerezin told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com on Friday. "Well see where it goes. Hes played 13 seasons with Montreal.Allen Bailey Jersey . Mark Bloom (@markbloom21), on Twitter That one sentence sums it up, while at the same time, leaving so much out.NEW YORK -- John Farrell is getting tired, tired of watching the Boston Red Sox waste opportunity after opportunity. The World Series champions failed each of the four times it had runners in scoring position, eking out just two hits while facing No. 5 starter VidalNuno and three relievers in an 6-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday night. "Again, the base hit with the guy in scoring position has been elusive," Farrell said. The Red Sox put runners on in each of the first three innings against Nuno (2-4), who gave up 13 runs in 9 1-3 innings over his last two starts, but came up empty in the sixth loss in eight games against New York this season. Boston is hitting .227 with RISP, a big part of the reason they are just 36-44. The Red Sox scored three runs or fewer for the 11th time in 13 games and losing for the sixth time in eight games. Fourth in the rugged AL East, Boston trails the Yankees, who entered the night in third, by six games. "I think weve got the right guys in here, guys who have been around and know what they have to do," BrockHolt said. "Its just a matter of going out and doing it." BrandonWorkman (1-1) pitched seven adequate innings but allowed a sacrifice fly to MarkTeixeira and consecutive homers to KellyJohnson and BrettGardner. Workman allowed four runs, seven hits and two walks. He struck out five. "Little bit of a grind the whole time," Workman said. "I was constantly pitching with guys on." BrianMcCann added a two-run homer off CraigBreslow in the eighth. In his first at-bat as a 40-year-old, DerekJeter fisted a single to right field with one out in the first. His birthday was on Thursday, the Yankees final day off before playing 17 straight going into the All-Star break. After JacobyEllsbury doubled, Jeter scored on Teixeiras sacrifice fly for the early lead. The Yankees captain also singled in the fourth for hit No. 3,390 and went 2 for 4 in New Yorks second win in six games. New York manager JoeGirardi could have sskipped the struggling Nuno and given the ball to rookie ace Masahiro Tanaka because of the extra day of rest but, in a feisty pregame Q&A with media, Girardi insisted he was interested in protecting his entire staff, not just the Japanese sensation. Anthony Sherman Red Jersey. Nuno rewarded Girardi with 5 2-3 impressive innings. He yielded a leadoff single to JonnyGomes in the second and a one-out double in the third to Holt. Nuno then retired 10 straight before walking DavidOrtiz, his last batter. "Ive had confidence in him but were in a situation where these are the five guys that we have," Girardi said. "Hes pitched some good games for us. ... He seems to always bounce back and give us a good outing." DellinBetances, AdamWarren and MattThornton finished the three-hitter. Holt possibly saved a run in the second when he made a leaping catch above the wall on BrianRoberts fly to right field. But he could only watch as Johnsons two-run homer in the fourth went deep into the bleachers in right field, his first home run in 85 at-bats. "It was a good feeling," Johnson said, "to drive a ball like that but also to give us some more breathing room." Gardner connected six pitches later, giving New York a 4-0 lead. NOTES: Red Sox SS StephenDrew snapped an 0-for-29 skid with a double in the seventh. ... Farrell said LHP Felix Dubront is being bumped to the bullpen. Dubront was not happy. "I have to stay positive and do my work," Dubront said. ... Boston OF ShaneVictorino (strained right hamstring) and 3B WillMiddlebrooks (broken finger) had setbacks in their rehabs. Both have stopped baseball activities and there are no timetables for their return. ... Yankees LHP CCSabathia (right knee) will make his first rehab start Saturday for Class-A Tampa. Sabathia has been out since May 11 with degenerative cartilage problem in his knee. He will likely need to make two more rehab starts. ... Up next: a matchup of aces. Boston LHP JonLester (8-7) vs. Tanaka (11-2). ' ' '
