DETROIT -- GustavNyquist is making the most of his opportunity to play a lot for the injury-depleted Detroit Red Wings. Will Montgomery . Nyquist had two goals and JimmyHoward made 31 saves to help the Red Wings hold on to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Tuesday night. The 24-year-old Nyquist has 19 goals in 43 games after he had a total of four goals in 40 games spread out over the previous two seasons in the league. Entering the game against Toronto, he was tied with Bostons JaromeIginla with an NHL-high 12 goals since Jan. 20. "I didnt know that," Nyquist said. "Im just playing with some good players and Im getting some good bounces." While Nyquist is being humble about his goal-scoring stretch, teammate DanielAlfredsson raved about the fellow Swede. "Hes really pesky on the forecheck and hes making a lot of plays," Alfredsson said. "His speed gives him chances that other players dont get. The second goal was a perfect example." Early in the third period, Nyquist poked the puck off the boards to himself and charged up the ice early to flick a wrist shot from the right circle that beat James Reimers blocker. That goal seemed to set the Red Wings up for the victory, but they still had work to do. JakeGardiner scored on a power play midway through the third to pull Toronto within a goal. The Maple Leafs appeared to tie the game less than two minutes later, but Nazem Kardris goal was waved off because he made a kicking motion to knock the puck in with the inside of his right skate. The Red Wings went ahead by two goals again with 2:33 left when Alfredssons wrist shot from the slot hit the back of the net on an odd-man rush that Gardiner lamented. "I thought we were going to come back at the end, but we made a mistake," Gardiner said. The Maple Leafs pulled Reimer to add an extra skater seconds later and JamesvanRiemsdyk scored with 1:13 left, but couldnt get the puck past Howard again to extend the game past regulation. "Not a lot of space out on the ice," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. Reimer stopped 28 shots for the Maple Leafs. Detroit is desperately trying to move up in the Eastern Conference standings to extend its post-season streak to 23 with a fraction of the team it expected to have this season. Toronto is the first of two wild-card teams in the East, and the Red Wings wouldnt make the playoffs is they started Wednesday. "A huge win for us," Nyquist said. "Also very important they didnt get a point too and we got two." The Red Wings lost forward JustinAbdelkader to a leg laceration in Sundays loss at Chicago, leading to the team calling up 22-year-old LandonFerraro, son of former NHL player RayFerraro. "I was a little nervous at the beginning," LandonFerraro acknowledged. Ferraro said it was "awesome" to have both his parents watch him play his first game for the Red Wings. "It was real nice for both of them to be able to get in and be here for this," he said before chatting with his father in the dressing room after the game. Abdelkaders injury also put 25-year-old defenceman BrendanSmith at forward for the first time since he was a teenager against Toronto. The banged-up team, which had won just two of their previous seven games, took another hit against the Maple Leafs. The Red Wings started the game with numerous forwards, including PavelDatsyuk and HenrikZetterberg, due to injuries and lost defenceman JonathanEricsson because of a broken finger. "We get somebody hurt every day and they never come back," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "I guess hes out for a bit. I dont really know. A hand specialist is looking at him." NOTES: The Maple Leafs beat the Red Wings in their previous meeting, a 3-2 shootout on New Years Day in the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium, after losing the first matchup this season 5-4 in a shootout at home. ... Abdelkader is expected to be out for two weeks. ... Toronto, which closed its road trip 2-3, hosts Tampa Bay on Wednesday. ... Detroits next game is Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dennis Smith .C. -- Colorado goaltender Dillon Ward made 41 saves and John Grant Jr. Rahim Moore . - The way MarkTeixeira looks at it, getting booed on the road is a badge of honour.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- MarkSanchez understands all the hoopla surrounding TimTebow. None of it worries the New York Jets quarterback. Hours after the Jets introduced Tebow at a huge news conference at the teams headquarters, Sanchez spoke for the first time since New York acquired the popular backup quarterback from Denver last Wednesday. "Were adding another player and were not replacing anybody," Sanchez said during a conference call from California. "I mean, hes here to help us and Im confident in my abilities. I know the team feels the same way about me. They have belief in me. ... Im not worried about losing my spot." Sanchez didnt watch Tebows big intro to the Big Apple. Instead, he said, he was working out and throwing. "I heard he did a pretty good job," Sanchez said. "How did he do?" Well, Tebow handled himself with the poise and confidence of a guy familiar with the spotlight. The Jets have repeatedly said Sanchez is the No. 1 quarterback, while Tebow will serve as the backup and see plenty of playing time in various roles. Sanchez, who recently signed a three-year contract extension, doesnt think it will be a distraction to have the popular quarterback on the team. He also brushed off the speculation that fans could call for Tebow as soon as he struggles. "That stuff happens whether youre TimTebow or not," Sanchez said. "They call for the backup any time youre not playing to your potential, so thaats just part of the job if youre not playing well. Aqib Talib. " After leading the Jets to consecutive AFC title games his first two seasons, Sanchez didnt progress as much as many expected in 2011 and finished with as many touchdown passes as turnovers: 26. His leadership skills and confidence were called into question by teammates quoted anonymously in newspaper reports. New York flirted with the idea of going after PeytonManning until it was clear there wasnt mutual interest. Manning landed in Denver, and the Broncos traded Tebow to the Jets. It was a move the front office didnt run by Sanchez -- the face of the franchise. "You know, I find its difficult enough to play quarterback in the league," he said. "Thats out of my wheelhouse." Sanchez hosted Tebow on his recruiting trip to Southern California a few years ago, and theyve been friends since. He thinks that, plus the fact Tebow will be able to "add a new wrinkle to our offence," makes the move a "plus for us." Tebow is expected to run the Jets wildcat offence, as well as serve in other roles. Sanchez isnt high on the wildcat because it means hes usually off the field when its run, but he insists hes OK with whatever the team wants. "Thats just how Im programmed and any quarterback is programmed like that," Sanchez said. "The way I feel about the wildcat really is secondary. Our team goal is whats the most important, and thats winning." ' ' ' |

The Vancouver Canucks have opted to keep centre RyanKesler. nfl jerseys china . Despite rumours of great interest from NHL teams - including the Pittsburgh Penguins -the Canucks did not get the package they were seeking to trade the 29-year-old centre. TheLivonia, Mich.-nativehas scored 21 goals and added 18 assists in 39 games with the Canucks this season. Kesler is currently in the fourth year of a six-year deal he signed with the Canucks prior to the 2010-11 season worth an average annual value of $5 million. One of the premier two-way forwards in the NHL, Kesler was the recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHLs best defensive forward in 2010-11. Kesler has spent his entire career with the Canucks, scoring 178 goals and 211 assists in 641 games. He was originally selected 23rd overall by Vancouver at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He has represented the United States on numerous occasions, including the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Games, winning silver at the former. He also won gold for the U.S. at both the 2002 Under-18 World Championships and the 2004 World Junior Hockey Championship. wholesale jerseys . The Kings have gone 6-0-3 over their last nine games despite having been held to three goals or fewer in eight of 10 contests this month. Los Angeles has failed to score more than two goals six times in that span. cheap jerseys from china . A CFL source told TSNs Matthew Scianitti that Smith will re-sign with the Toronto Argonauts.Jeff Stoughtons 11th Canadian mens curling championship is a bit of a homecoming. Kamloops, B.C., the host city of this years Tim Hortons Brier, is where he won his first Canadian mens curling crown in 1996. He has won twice since -- the last in 2011 -- and is a two-time world champion. "Its kind of special being able to come back after so many years to a place with some great memories," he said in an interview. "Its pretty cool and the team is really looking forward to getting on with the week." The Brier starts Saturday and runs to March 9. Last year Stoughton lost the Brier final in Edmonton 11-4 to Brad Jacobs and his Northern Ontario rink. Stoughton had a disappointing 3-4 finish at the Olympic Curling Trials in December, as Jacobs went undefeated in claiming the right to wear Canadas colours in Sochi. Stoughton had lots of company. No one could slow the juggernaut from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.. "There was only one happy team coming out of those trials and that was obviously Jacobs," said Stoughton. "We just sort of decompressed for a few weeks and then got right back at it, had a great Skins Game, great fun Continental Cup with the guys, and then just carried right through to the Safeway championship in Winnipeg." In this years Brier field -- with both Jacobs and Alberta veteran Kevin Martin absent -- Stoughton and Albertas Kevin Koe are favourites. Manitoba has a record 27 wins at the Brier, followed closely by Alberta with 25. Koe is representing Alberta this year for the third time, after beating Martin 7-5 to take the provincial title. Koe won the Brier in 2010, his first appearance, and went on to win a world championship. Just getting out of Alberta is tough for Koe, who curls out of Calgary. "Youve got to get through one of the top teams in the world in Kevin Martin and its definitely not realistic to think you can do that every year," he said. He recognizes hes going to be one of the favourites along with Stoughton but says thats no different than any other year and the rest of the field may be deeper than some suspect. "Theres quite a few teams that a lot of people dont know about that I think will do pretty good, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, maybe even the Territories. I think its a pretty tough field actually." Theres maybe a little family pride creeping in there. For the third time in five years, hell be joined at the Brier by brother Jamie, who skips the Northwest Territories-Yukon entry. Jamie Koe is making his eighth appearance. In 2012, the brothers met in the 3 vs. 4 Page playoff. Kevin won and Jamie later lost to Manitobas Rob Fowler in the bronze-medal match but it was still a strong finish for a Territories team. Saskatchewan is led by 2003 World Junior champ Steve Laycock, back for his second appearance as skip at the Canadiann championship with a new team of Kirk Muyres, Colton Flasch and Dallan Muryes. cheap jerseys. Jean-Michel Menard is back for his eighth try after becoming just the second skip from Quebec to win the championship in 2006. His lineup consists of Martin Crete, Eric Sylvain and brother Philippe Menard. One of the only new faces this year is Ontarios Greg Balsdon, who stopped Glenn Howard from making his ninth straight appearance at the Brier. "I dont want to say we lucked out because weve had good games but theyve obviously beaten us more than weve beaten them," Balsdon said of the final, that saw Howard miss with his last rock and give up the winning point. Balsdon is new to the Canadian mens championship. He was part of the Cory Heggestad-led team that won the 2013 Canadian Mixed, but he says this feels bigger. "It feels just amazing. I dont think well truly appreciate it until were there," he said. Another team that has the chops to run with the best is also the hometown favourite -- John Morris and his B.C. rink, that features former skip and Kamloops native Jim Cotter at third. "Its exciting," says Cotter. "I think back 18 years ago when it was in Kamloops and Barry McPhee was the hometown team and I remember watching in the crowd there and I was pretty excited for those guys. . . Here we are 18 years later and Ive got the same opportunity." They made it all the way to the final against Jacobs at the Olympic Trials by beating Martin. After a disappointing loss, they took a few weeks off during the holidays to regroup but Cotter says they took good things out of the trials into the provincial finals in B.C. The addition of the veteran Morris, now curling for his third province, has made a huge difference, Cotter says. "We really have clicked. Johns just a phenomenal guy on and off the ice." Jacobs, meanwhile, is still celebrating his Olympic gold-medal win. The schedule made it virtually impossible to compete for a berth in this years Brier, although starting in 2015 the previous years winner will get an automatic berth, something the women already do. With Jacobs out of the mix, 1996 Canadian junior champ Jeff Currie was able to shift the Northern Ontario title from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay with his team of Mike McCarville, Colin Koivula and Jamie Childs. Former Olympic champ Brad Gushue from Newfoundland and Labrador is still the headliner out of the Atlantic provinces and James Grattan is making his 11th appearance for New Brunswick. Eddie MacKenzie has led Prince Edward Island to the Brier for three of the last four years and Jamie Murphy is back after also representing Nova Scotia at the 2012 championship. Brier finalists each receive $40,000 in prize money, the bronze medallist gets $30,000 and the $20,000 goes to the fourth-place team. ' ' ' |

NEW YORK -- ScottSizemore is among nine players agreeing to minor league contracts with the Yankees, giving New York another option as AlexRodriguezs replacement at third base. jerseys from china . Sizemore, who turned 29 on Jan. 4, has been limited to six games over the past two seasons because of an injured left knee that twice required surgery. He originally got hurt on Feb. 25, 2012, during a fielding drill in Oaklands first full-squad spring training workout and had surgery that March 21 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Sizemore returned to hit .216 with six RBIs, a double and triple during 21 spring training games last year and was 0 for 6 last season when he got hurt again April 9 while chasing a bloop single by the Los Angeles Angels MikeTrout. cheap jerseys . And he thinks its "irresponsible" for the Buffalo Sabres to suggest otherwise. The NHLs new sheriff reacted strongly to complaints from the Sabres on Monday after he elected not to suspend Bruins forward MilanLucic for his collision with Buffalos RyanMiller. wholesale jerseys . The Montreal Canadiens goaltenders dogs Motty ("short for Mozart") and Duke got loose overnight.VANCOUVER - After more than two decades in the CFL, Paul McCallum has finally become a specialist. McCallum, entering his 22nd CFL season, will focus on field goals in 2014 with the B.C. Lions, who signed him to a two-year contract Thursday. He has previously held all three kicking duties - kickoffs, punts and three-point efforts. But the reduction in responsibilities will not necessarily translate into a sign of his impending retirement at the conclusion of the season. "Im not looking at it like this is my last year, because I really dont understand how people do that," said McCallum. "For me, just looking at this year, this season, is what Im going to concentrate on, and then Ill look at it. Im not saying this is my last year. Im saying this is the year that Im going to concentrate on." McCallum, a 44-year-old Surrey, B.C., product, signed on for a 10th season with the Lions. He has also played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Ottawa Rough Riders. The Lions also announced the signing of kicker Ricky Schmitt, who was a member of Saskatchewans Grey Cup-champion team in 2013. Schmitt, a 28-year-old Virginia Beach, Va., native, who is entering his second full CFL season, will take over McCallums former punting and kick-off duties. "The reduced role, I think, is a positive thing for the club, especially with the fact that (Schmitt) is here," said McCallum. "Schmitt has got, probably, the strongest leg in the league for punting and kickoffs. So, for me, I think thats a benefit for the club. So I only look at it as a positive, not a negative." B.C. coach Mike Benevides attempted to limit McCallums duties, and the wear and tear on his right leg last season by placing the since-departed Hugh ONeill on the active roster at the start of the campaign. ONeill, who had spent the previous two years on the Lions practice roster without getting into a regular-season game, handled all three duties in the pre-season and early in the regular season while McCallum was sidelined with a groin injury. Once McCallum returned, ONeill was assigned kickoff responsibilities, but it was difficult for the Lions to balance two Canadian kickers on the active roster with the ratio of imports and non-imports. ONeill fell out of favour and was released in mid-season because he would not agree to a contract extension. General manager Wally Buono was also not satisfied with his progress after three seasons in the organization. ONeill quickly signed with Edmonton and remains with the Eskimos. Upon releasing ONeill, the Lions brought back Steven Shott after cutting him in the pre-season. Shott, a 24-year-old Vancouver native, remains on the B.C. roster as a long-term prospect. But its aanyones guess on when he or Schmitt will challenge McCallum for the full-time position booting field goals. cheap jerseys from china. . "I think last year was a bit of a different situation," said McCallum. "I could understand the direction the club wanted to take last year, and I was willing to (accept) that last year. But last year, my thought process was that I wanted to compete for the job still. Now? No, I dont want to compete for that job. There is no real competition as far as leg strength goes." McCallum is a two-time CFL All-Star (2010, 2011) and took home the leagues most outstanding special teams player in 2011, when he connected on 50 of 53 field-goal attempts. He is one of just five players in the CFL or NFL to play in 20 or more seasons, and ranks as the only CFL kicker to record 10 or more consecutive seasons with a field goal success rate of 80 per cent or better. "I have, believe it or not, as a kicker, looked after my body," said McCallum. "Kicking is a mental game. So the whole aspect of going out and competing, I still have it there. Its not what it was when I first started playing, but I still believe that I still have enough leg strength to kick the important field goals at 50-yard-line." McCallum kicked 28 field goals on 33 attempts in 2013, with the longest coming from 47 yards. But Schmitt holds a distinct advantage in the punting department. He posted a 45-yard net average last season with the Roughriders on 136 attempts, and his punts are known for their long hang time. McCallums career average net punting yardage is 41.4. McCallum pledged to mentor Schmitt and Shott if they seek his advice. "I think Ive proven over the years that Im a team guy," said McCallum. "So if whoevers there is going to need some help, then Im willing to do that." Schmitt said he hopes to learn as much as he can from the veteran while helping both lead the league in every kicking statistical category. The former Roughrider attributed his departure from Saskatchewan to the CFLs import and non-import ratio after the first phase of free agency. "They lost a bunch of good Americans (at other positions)," said Schmitt, who played collegiately for NCAA Division II squad Shepherd in West Virginia and had could not stick with five NFL clubs. "We were in contract discussions but, ultimately, it just came down to the nature of the business." When asked if he wants to kick field goals for B.C. eventually, Schmitt, who handled all of his teams kicking duties in college, said he is willing to do whatever team asks. "I know that (McCallum) is going to be doing the field goals for as long as he can," said Schmitt. ' ' ' |

TSN football analyst Chris Schultz is back with his Week 7 selections in the CFL. cheap jerseys . The Big Man finished 2-2 in Week 6, and sits at 11-13 on the season in Schultz vs. The World. Now Schultz is ready for more action, including a close prediction between the Roughriders and Blue Bombers. Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers I like the Bombers because I dont think the Riders will be able to get off to a quick start for a third straight game. In the Riders 39-7 win over the Toronto Argonauts on July 26, it was two fast and early turnovers in the first quarter that determined the game for Saskatchewan. Then, last week in Ottawa against the Redblacks the Riders were able to do same thing again; two fast and early first quarter turnovers made it an easy win for Saskatchewan 38-14. I cant see this one getting out of control early, I see quite the opposite. With the Bombers, at home, probably in front of their biggest crowd of the year, I see Bombers winning by 3 and not much more. Winnipeg continues to roll, Bombers win. Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes Edmonton is coming off the bye week, and teams generally play much better after the experience and rejuvenation of a week off. I realize the Alouettes destroyed that theory last week, when they came off the bye only to lose to Toronto 31- 5, but they have quarterback issues and the Eskimos do not. Between Troy Smith, Alex Brink or Tanner Marsh I would stay with Troy Smith. You can run an effective short passing game as long as you have a great running back, which the Als do in Brandon Whitaker. I would design my offence to make sure he gets the football 20 times rushing and 10 times receiving. 50 per cent of the offence needs to be Brandon Whitaker. However, even if they do it may not be enough for the struggling team. Coming off the loss at home to the Calgary Stampeders and having a week to prepare for the game Ill take Edmonton over Montreal. Hamilton Tiger-Cats at B.C. Lions The Lions are having an up and down year like no one else in the CFL. Two losses followed by two wins, followed by a loss, followed by a win. Im not sure which BC team will show up, but at home they do have a history of success. With Hamilton, comes quarterback Dan Lefevour, who has the opportunity to establish himself as a No. 1 quarterback is right in front of him. He needs to take it now, as it may not be there later. With only one win, which came over Ottawa, the Tiger-Cats confidence is not high. But Winnipeg beat the Lions 23-6 at B.C. place two weeks ago, so if Winnipeg can do it so can Hamilton, right? Wrong, BC over Hamilton. Ottawa Redblacks at Calgary Stampeders The Redblacks played like an expansion team last week, losing 38-14 to the Riders. If they dont protect the football in Calgary, the Stampeders are going to win this week and probably to do it in a similar fashion to that 38-14 rout. A John Hufnagel team is at its best coming off a loss, and after losing 25-24 to the Lions, I think Calgary will be at its best. The pressure is off Bo Levi Mitchell and his undefeated streak, now its time to start a new one. Ottawa has some good players, Calgary just has more. This will be a bounce back game for Stampeders; Calgary over Ottawa. wholesale jerseys . LUCIE, Fla. cheap nfl jerseys . Poyets immediate challenge is to produce Sunderlands first victory in the league, with the northeast club bottom with just one point from seven matches. "Trust me, believe, connect with the team," Poyet said after signing a two-year contract.BOISE, Idaho -- With his fifth-ranked team trailing by two points in the final seconds, San Diego State coach Steve Fisher was all but certain senior point guard Xavier Thames was going to take the final shot for the Aztecs on Wednesday night. But Thames surprised his coach -- and most of the 9,602 in attendance -- when he whipped a pass to Dwayne Polee II, who drained a three-pointer withfour seconds left to give the Aztecs an improbable come-from-behind 67-65 victory that extended their winning streak to 19 games. "It was like the Red Sea parted," Polee said. "I wasnt surprised. X is a real unselfish player, and if there was one person open, he was going to find them." Thames finished with 23 points for San Diego State (20-1, 9-0 Mountain West), but it was his steal at midcourt in the final minute and his second assist of the game that saved the Aztecs, who trailed by 14 points in the second half. "What can you say about Xavier Thames?" Fisher asked. "You cant tell me that hes not playing as well as anyone in America right now." Thames said he was very close to taking a shot that would have tied the score. But at the very last second, he changed his mind. "I had a pretty decent look, but I saw DP out of the corner of my eye," Thames said. "I was going to shoot a floater but (Ryan) Watkins was going to contest it. Then I saw (Anthony) Drmic sink down. It was on the tip of my fingers (to shoot). It was pretty close." Close is the typical result when the Aztecs and Broncos (15-8, 5-5) play. The past six meetings between the schools have been decided by six or fewer points. San Diego State eliminated Boise State from the past two conference tournaments and won 69-66 last month in San Diego. "Theyre a good matchup for us, and were a good matchup for them," Thames said. "We know were always going to get a great game for them." Mikey Thompson led the Bronccos with 16 points and Thomas Bropleh and Derrick Marks both added 15. jerseys from china. "I just feel awful for these guys right now," Boise State coach Leon Rice said. "They are giving everything they have. We just havent finished." Boise State led the final 18 minutes of the first half and the first 15 of the second before a scoring drought allowed the Aztecs to rally. After Bropleh banked in a three-pointer to give the Broncos a 57-43 lead with 13:37 to play, Boise State only made one field goal in the next 11 minutes and the lead disappeared when Thames scored his seventh consecutive point to give his team a 61-59 lead withfour minutes to play. Boise State finally got on track, getting two free throws and a layup from Thompson and a basket from Marks to retake the lead at 65-62. Thames made a steal in the final minute and hit two free throws after being fouled, and after Marks missed a jumper, the Aztecs were in position for the biggest play of the game. "That was a tough, gutty character-type game for us," Fisher said. "We stayed with it and found a way to win." Thames said there was some motivation to keep the winning streak going. With its meteoric rise to No. 5 in the poll, the Aztecs expect to get every teams best shot the rest of the way. "We talked at halftime about that," he said. "We said, You know they are going to rush the court if they win. We didnt want that to happen." Josh Davis had 10 points for San Diego State, which won despite turning the ball over 15 times and allowing Boise State to shoot 51 per cent from the field and make eight three-pointers. "They just kept hitting shot after shot," said Polee, who finished with nine points and was 1 for 1 on three-point attempts. "Everything they threw up was going in. We just had to buckle up." The win was the 10th straight win away from home for San Diego State and its ninth ' ' ' |

(SportsNetwork. Julian Edelman Womens Jersey .com) - Canadian AnthonyBennett and the Cleveland Cavaliers open their season against the Brooklyn Nets tonight. Bennett became the first Canadian to be selected first overall in the NBA Draft this summer and joins fellow Canadian TristanThompson. Cleveland should be a much better team this season with All-Star KyrieIrving running the show. The Cavaliers missed the playoffs for a third straight year last season and compiled a 24-58 record. Irving, Thompson and shooting guard DionWaiters are expected to carry the load in 2012-13. Irving battled injuries last season and hopes to stay healthy for the new campaign. "This is the best Ive ever felt coming into a season," Irving said. "My goal is to become the best player in the league." Cleveland also inked much-maligned center AndrewBynum. Cavs head coach Mike Brown is back with the team for another stint. Brooklyn won all three meetings with Cleveland last season and is 8-2 in the past 10 matchups in this series. The Nets have prevailed in four of their last five trips to the Q. The new-look Nets bolstered their lineup by acquiring PaulPierce, KevinGarnett, AndreiKirilenko and JasonTerry to play alongside BrookLopez, JoeJohnson and DeronWilliams. The Nets appear to be a contender in the Eastern Conference and anything short of one of the top three seeds would be considered a disappointment. Brooklyn also tabbed JasonKidd as its new head coach, although he will miss Wednesday nights game due to a suspension. He will miss two games after pleading guilty to driving while ability impaired. Lawrence Frank will coach the team the first two games. "Championship teams are built on being prepared, playing unselfishly and being held accountable, and thats how I expect to coach this basketball team," Kidd said. "I am truly excited about this next phase of my basketball career." Brooklyn went 49-33 last season and lost in seven games to the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs. After the Nets visit the Cavs, they will host the two-time defending champion Miami Heat at Barclays Center on Friday.Chandler Jones Camo Jersey . The Basque club improved to four points better than fifth-place Villarreal in the duel for the last Champions League qualifying place. Celta should have come away with more from the high tempo game. Rob Ninkovich Authentic Jersey .C. -- J.B.Holmes was a 3-foot putt away from winning the Wells Fargo Championship when he backed away to size up the situation.EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers centre PauGasol will miss at least the next week with a strained right groin. The spiraling Lakers announced their latest injury setback on Saturday after an MRI exam for the 7-foot Spaniard. He will be re-evaluated next weekend after the Lakers three-game road trip. Gasol scored 24 points in the Lakers 110-100 home loss to Charlotte on Friday night, ttheir sixth straight defeat. Jerod Mayo Authentic Jersey. He has been bothered by a sore groin for several games, but attempted to play through it. The Lakers have been decimated by injuries. KobeBryant, SteveNash, SteveBlake, JordanFarmar and XavierHenry have all been out for several weeks. The Lakers have lost 18 of 21 to fall into 14th place in the Western Conference. ' ' ' |

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Packers #27 Jersey . -- BobbyRyan helped the U.S. to the silver medal in the 2010 Olympics. Unless Ryan gets a spot for the Sochi Games to replace an injured player, he will not have a chance to help the Americans go for gold. The U.S. Olympic hockey team was announced Wednesday after Torontos shootout victory over Detroit in the NHL Winter Classic. "We did not pick the 25 best players," general manager David Poile said. "We picked the 25 players we thought gave us a chance to win the gold medal." Ryan was perhaps the most surprising omission on the 25-man roster. JackJohnson and ErikJohnson, a pair of defencemen who played in the Vancouver Games, also didnt make the cut. JimmyHoward, who couldnt make enough stops to help the Red Wings beat the Maple Leafs, appears to be the Americans third goaltender behind JonathanQuick and RyanMiller. At Sochi, the U.S. forwards will be: DavidBackes, DustinBrown, RyanCallahan, PatrickKane, RyanKesler, PhilKessel, T.J.Oshie, MaxPacioretty, ZachParise, JoePavelski, PaulStastny, DerekStepan, JamesvanRiemsdyk and BlakeWheeler. JohnCarlson, JustinFaulk, CamFowler, PaulMartin, RyanMcDonagh, BrooksOrpik, KevinShattenkirk and RyanSuter will be on defence for the Americans. Miller was named MVP of the ice hockey tournament at the Vancouver Games, but he wasnt a lock to keep a spot because Quick, one of many players on the team who has been injured this season, has been perhaps the worlds best at stopping shots the past two seasons. Howard, Schneider, Gibson, TimThomas and CraigAnderson also were options for the selection committee. To play to their potential, a lot of banged-up players will have to get healthy this month and stay that way through February. Players who couldve potentially been on the team, but werent selected include: BenBishop, KeithYandle, KyleOkposo, CorySchneider, BrandonSaad and DustinByfuglien. The Americans expect to be a medal contender after they were regarded as young underdogs in 2010, when they were a goal away from knocking off the host Canadians. The team will be led by Pittsburgh Penguins coach DanBylsma. He has been at ease publicly, saying he likes the Americans chances to win gold for the first time since the Miracle on Ice victory in 1980. Packers #30 Jersey . -- ChampBailey finally gets a chance to live up to his name. Packers #5 Jersey .Y. - Centre Corban Knight scored 3:30 into overtime, and the Abbotsford Heat rallied to edge the Utica Comets 5-4 on Wednesday in American Hockey League play.KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Atlanta Braves added to their extensive wave of long-term deals with their young stars on Sunday by agreeing to a $42 million, four-year contract with All-Star closer CraigKimbrel. Kimbrel, 25, avoided salary arbitration. He was the last Braves player eligible for arbitration. Kimbrel gets a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $7 million this year, $9 million in 2015, $11 million in 2016 and $13 million in 2017. The Braves have a $13 million option for 2018 with a $1 million buyout. "We are very excited to agree to terms with Craig, who we feel is the best closer in Major League Baseball," Braves general manager Frank Wren said. "He is one of the key pieces of our pitching staff and we are happy to keep him in a Braves uniform for at least four more years." Kimbrels arbitration hearing had been set for Monday. The Braves offered $6.55 million and Kimbrel asked for $9 million. The Braves have been busy locking up some of their top young players and avoiding arbitration with long-term contracts. The deal with Kimbrel came only two days after the Braves and right-hander JulioTeheran, 23, agreed to terms on a six-year, $32.4 million contract on Friday. The deal includes a club option for the 2020 season. Earlier this month, the Braves announced multi-year deals with a pair of 24-year-old hitters -- first baseman FreddieFreeman and outfielder JasonHeyward. Freeman agreed to the biggest contract in Brraves history -- $135 million for eight years. Packers #99 Jersey. Heywards contract is for two years and $13.3 million. The agreement with Kimbrel allows the Braves to retain one of baseballs most dominant closers. He has 138 saves in the last three seasons, including 50 saves with a 1.21 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 67 innings last year. He earned one save in 2010 as his introduction to his run of three straight All-Star seasons in 2011-13. Kimbrel has a 1.39 ERA with 381 strikeouts in 227 1-3 career innings. The hard-throwing right-hander has been successful in 139 of 154 career saves opportunities. Kimbrel, from Huntsville, Ala., said he wanted to remain close to home. "Im very excited," Kimbrel told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "If I didnt want to be here, this wouldnt be going on. Were playing to win. This is where I want to be." Kimbrel can add value to his contract through a points system. He would earn five points each time hes an All-Star, 10 for winning a Cy Young Award, five for finishing second or third in Cy Young, three for finishing fourth or fifth in Cy Young, five for being the top Cy Young voter-getter among pitchers with fewer than five starts; 10 for winning an MVP award, five for finishing second or third in MVP, third for finishing fourth or fifth in MVP, and three for each season with 57 or more games finished. Kimbrel would be paid $1 million for 20 points and $500,000 for each additional five points through 45. ' ' ' |

DETROIT -- The Detroit Grand Prix has reached a two-year extension with Chevrolet to keep a race on Belle Isle through at least 2016. Leodis McKelvin Blue Jersey . The announcement was made Tuesday. Auto racing returned to Detroit in 2012 following a four-year absence thanks in part to a three-year deal with Chevy. Without the new contract, this years IndyCar races could have potentially been the last ones scheduled in the Motor City. The Detroit Grand Prix will feature a pair of races -- on May 30 and June 1 -- just like last year. Simon Pagenaud and Mike Conway won the races on an improved track that held up much better than it did in 2012 when pot holes and grooves spoiled the show. Dan Carpenter Bills Jersey . On Tuesday, they did it again. RoyHibbert scored 22 points and LanceStephenson fell just short of his fourth triple double this season, helping the Pacers hold off Torontos late charge for an 86-79 victory that allowed them to keep the NBAs best record. C.J. Spiller Camo Jersey . The import DB was taken to a nearby hospital after catching his head awkwardly trying to tackle Winnipeg running back Will Ford in the first quarter of the game at the Rogers Centre.PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius defence team called an anesthetist to testify at the double-amputee runners murder trial Thursday in an attempt to counter prosecution claims that Pistorius is lying about the timeline of events on the night he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Prof. Aina Christina Lundgren was being questioned on her expertise regarding how long it takes a person to digest food after eating. The testimony relates to an autopsy report on Steenkamps body that said she still had food in her stomach after she was killed by Pistorius, leading prosecutors to challenge his story that the couple last ate around eight hours before he shot her through a toilet door. An expert testifying for the prosecution said a persons stomach is normally empty of food six hours after eating and Steenkamp ate much later on the night of the killing and not in line with Pistorius story. Prosecutors say thats because the couple were up arguing late into the night before Pistorius shot Steenkamp multiple times in the midst of a heated fight through a toilet stall door in his bathroom. Pistorius says he mistook her for an intruder hiding behind the closed toilet stall door. He testified the couple had dinner at around 7 p.m. on the night she was killed, and they were in bed around 10 p.m. Pistorius shot Steenkamp after 3 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2013. Lundgren, who described herself as a specialist anesthetist, testified that there are a number of factors that could have delayed the digestion process in Steenkamp to explain the food found in her stomach, including that she was a pre-menopausal woman and had been sleeping. Lundgren was presented by the defence to try and undermine the testimony of pathologgist Prof. Dan Carpenter Authentic Jersey. Gert Saayman, who said it was his opinion that Steenkamp ate much later than Pistorius says, possibly even at around 1 a.m. when the runner claims they were in bed. Lundgren said it was difficult to be exact about the rate of digestion and it was "speculative to attempt to estimate when she had last eaten." Chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel cross-examined Lundgren and pointed to Saaymans findings that he could even identify vegetable and cheese matter in Steenkamps stomach. "Would you not have expected the digestive process to have caused the contents to be unrecognizable after eight hours?" Nel asked Lundgren. "I cant comment," she replied. "But he can, and he did," Nel said of Saaymans report. The state pathologist was present in the courtroom and Nel asserted that his evidence was "more probable." Replying to Nels questions, Lundgren said she was a clinician and unwilling to criticize Saayman, a pathologist. However, later on re-examination by chief defence lawyer Barry Roux, she said she did not agree with Saaymans assertion that Steenkamp ate at 1 a.m. or after. Pistorius lawyers also said in a statement Thursday that an offer to buy the villa where the Olympian killed Steenkamp had been accepted and the sale of the house was being processed. Pistorius is selling his home in the gated community in the South African capital Pretoria to help with his legal bills. His trial is now into its seventh week of testimony. Lawyer Brian Webber said they would not identify who was buying the house or the amount it was being sold for until the sale was finalized. Pistorius last year valued the house at about $450,000. LONDON -- Tottenham hired Mauricio Pochettino as the clubs new manager on a five-year contract on Tuesday, with the former Argentina defender making the move from fellow Premier League side Southampton. Ziggy Ansah Jersey . Pochettino replaced Tim Sherwood, who was fired on May 13 after just five months in the job following Tottenhams sixth-place finish in the league. The 42-year-old Pochettino developed a strong reputation for playing a positive, attacking brand of football in his 18 months at Southampton, which he joined from Spanish side Espanyol when he replaced Nigel Adkins. Southampton finished eighth in the standings last season, with its highest Premier League points haul of 56. "This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach," Pochettino said. "There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad. We are determined to give the supporters the kind of attacking football and success that we are all looking to achieve." Pochettino is the eighth permanent manager to be appointed in Spurs chairman Daniel Levys 13 years at the club. "In Mauricio I believe we have a head coach who, with his high energy, attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our club," Levy said in a statement. "He has a proven ability to develop each player as an individual, whilst building great team spirit and a winning mentality. We have a talented squad that Mauricio is excited to be coaching next season." Tottenham aspires to qualify for the Champions League again, having played one season alongside Europes elite in 2010-11. Following the sale of winger Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for 100 million euros (then $132 million), the North-London club went through a chaotic season that has featured defeats of 6-0 and 5-1 to Manchester City, 5-0 at home to Liverpool and a change of manager when Andre Villas-Boas was replaced by Sherwood. Pochettinos arrival could also help relaunch the career of forward Erik Lamela, who has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and was hampered by a series of injuries since joining the club for an estimated 30 million pounds ($50.41 million) fee. Although he was beaten twice by Sherwood last season, the former Espanyol boss led Southampton to its highest-ever Premier League finish. He will keep working with his own staff, with assistant coach Jesus Perez, first team coach Miguel DAgostino and goalkeeper coach Toni Jimenez all following him to White Hart Lane. Southampton said it has begun its search for a "high-calibre" manager, with Sherwood reportedly an option to replace Pochettino alongside the likes of Malky Mackay, Steve McClaren, Murat Yakin and Michael Laudrup. "The club has been on a constant path of growth since the arrival of (the late owner) Markus Liebherr in 2009," Saints chairman Ralph Krueger said. "This growth took place before Mauricio came, it continued strongly under his leadership, and it will continue into the next season." Joique Bell Jersey . But in the aftermath a 115-91 pounding of the Utah Jazz on Saturday night, Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey insisted it was still invaluable for evaluating the depth of his team early in the season. Matthew Stafford Jersey . The Stars were up 3-1 in the third. Stars and Jets will meet at the MTS Centre Sunday night (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) in what is a must win for the Jets. The Jets and Stars will meet in Dallas later this month, the Stars have two games in hand.CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers All-Star point guard KyrieIrving has been cleared to return to practice after missing eight games with a biceps injury. Irving strained his left biceps on March 16 against the Clippers. He can resume full contact immediately, but the Cavs said his status for important games this week at Orlando and Atlanta has not been determined. Cleveland is 4-4 since its leading scorer was injjured. Glover Quin Jersey. The Cavs, who enter the week just 2 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, will likely ease Irving back into the lineup. Also, an MRI on forward AndersonVarejaos shoulder revealed a sprained AC joint. The 6-foot-11 Varejao will not play Wednesday against the Magic and the team said his status beyond that will be updated later. ' ' ' |

Five former Kansas City Chiefs players are suing the team claiming the team concealed the long-term neurological impact of repeated headshots. Manny Ramirez . The plaintiffs in the action are Leonard Griffin, Chris Martin and his wife, Joe Phillips, Alexander Louis Cooper and Kevin Porter. The players are alleging they suffer from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, as a result of their days in the National Football League. This same allegation was made in the NFLs concussion lawsuits. In all, there were over 220 lawsuits involving 4,500 former retired NFL players. This new lawsuit, however, is different than the NFL concussion lawsuits in that the plaintiffs are targeting the team and not the NFL. There are two reasons for the timing of the lawsuit. First, these players played between 1987 and 1993. During that time, there was no collective bargaining agreement in place. This is important since the CBA provides that issues of player health and safety go to arbitration and court. Thats why the NFL went to court to try and get the players lawsuits punted and sent to arbitration (the court never had a chance to rule on that request since settlement was announced). So in this case, since there was no CBA in place when the players were playing, they can head to court without the CBA saying they have to go to arbitration. Theres also a local Missouri law that allows employees (or players) to sue employers (or teams) if the employees are declined workmans compensation. That legislation expires at the end of this year so the players may have decided now or never. One more point. The big NFL concussion lawsuits havent formally settled. You may remember that the negotiated settlement was for $765 million and would bind every retired NFL player the day the deal is approved by the Court (thats about 18,000 players). Settlement was indeed announced; however, the Court still has to approve the settlement proposal. As well, a player may opt out of the settlement and file his own lawsuit. So its premature to declare that the case is done. Still much ground to cover. Wes Welker . The Winnipeg Jets head coach, whose parents are French-Canadian, lost much of his mother tongue the result of playing and coaching hockey in the U.S. but still speaks enough to get by. Tom Jackson . The 32-year-old native of Mont-Tremblant, Que., said on his Twitter account that his knee was bothering him. Guay underwent knee surgery over the summer, then returned for the start of the World Cup season after an intensive rehab program.ST. PETERSBURG, Russia -- Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Borussia Dortmund took a big step toward the Champions League quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory at Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday. Losing finalists last year, Dortmund made a blistering start with Henrikh Mkhitaryan scoring in the fourth minute and Marco Reus doubling the visitors lead a minute later. Zenit, which hadnt played a competitive game since Dec. 11 due to the Russian winter break, looked rusty, but pulled one back through Oleg Shatov in the 57th. Lewandowski replied four minutes later, after playing a one-two with Poland teammate Lukasz Piszczek. Then Piszczek conceded a penalty and Hulk scored emphatically from the spot in the 69th. Lewandowski responded by scoring his sides fourth away goal two minutes later to leave Dortmund firmly in control before the second-leg of the round-of-16 tie on March 19. "We were close to optimal this evening," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. "It was a great game, no question." After more than two months without competitive football, the home side buckled early on under the visitors pressure and struggled to keep up with their quick passing game. The tactics quickly paid off for Dortmund when Reus ran at the Zenit defence, staying on his feet when he might have been awarded a penalty, before Mkhitaryan swept the loose ball past Yuri Lodygin. The visiting fans were still celebrating when Kevin Grosskreutz knocked Mkhitaryans cross back for Reus to volley inside the right post. "We stayed compact. We wanted to pressure them to win back the ball. That was very important," Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl said. "We brought the game in the right direction and made Zenit uncertain." Zenits attacking midfielder Andrey Arshavin went off with what looked a hamstring injury in the 15th minute, and last-gasp defending from its captain Nicolas Lombaerts prevented Lewandowski from getting Dortmunds third shortly afterward. Zenit was let down by sloppy plaay and nervous defending, with Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, who came on for the injured Arshavin, giving the ball away cheaply to highlight his sides travails. Dennis Smith. Hulk was fired up but his shot failed to trouble Roman Weidenfeller and his only reward for taking on three Dortmund defenders was a corner, which came to nothing. Lodygin pulled off a good save to deny Lewandowski three minutes after the interval, before Zenit responded with a period of pressure. It finally paid off when Shatov scored in fortuitous fashion. Marcel Schmelzer cleared Hulks effort off the line and Jose Rondon struck the post from the rebound, before the loose ball fell kindly for Shatov to blast home. Dortmund soon replied, with Lewandowski playing a one-two with Poland teammate Lukasz Piszczek and firing beyond Lodygin, who got a touch to the ball. The home side was given a lifeline when Piszczek was adjudged to have fouled Viktor Fayzulin. Hulk duly obliged with his penalty. But Lewandowski provided another immediate response after Tymoshchuk lost possession. Reus sent the ball into the Poland strikers path and he fired inside the far corner for his sixth of the campaign. "I dont have the feeling that it was easy," Klopp said in response to a question from a Russian journalist. "I think we had to work very hard." The game was played with the section normally occupied by Zenits ultra fans closed due to racist behaviour, fireworks and crowd disturbances during a group stage loss at Austria Vienna on Dec. 11. There was also tight security in place around the Petrovsky Stadium to prevent any further trouble. Zenits Italian coach Luciano Spalletti said the tie was not yet decided and that his side still has a chance of going through. "In football theres always a chance of coming back," Spalletti said. "Everything depends on what kind of performance you deliver. It all depends on what you put into it, how much youre prepared to run. It depends on your effort." ' ' ' |

DETROIT -- The Tigers have finalized their $2. Ryan Tannehill Dolphins Jersey .5 million. one-year deal with right-handed reliever JobaChamberlain. Chamberlain joins a retooled bullpen that also includes free agent acquisition JoeNathan. The hard-throwing Chamberlain, whose slide has been inconsistent in recent years, was 2-1 with one save in 45 games and a career-high 4.93 ERA last season for the New York Yankees. Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski indicated Friday that the team may not make any more major moves this off-season. The Tigers traded slugger PrinceFielder for second baseman IanKinsler last month, and their lineup figures to have less power and more speed next year. Chamberlain missed almost the entire month of May last season because of a strained right oblique. He was limited to 49 games over the previous two years because of elbow and ankle operations. In additional to his base salary, Chamberlain can earn $500,000 in performance bonuses: $100,000 each for 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 games. He would get $75,000 if he makes the All-Star team. Dan Marino Authentic Jersey . Miamis two-year reign was over. And Bosh almost sounded relieved. The Heat got rolled in the NBA Finals by San Antonio, losing in five games, the last three of them lopsided, and for the first time since 2011 there would be no championship parade in Miami. Ryan Tannehill Pink Jersey . -- The Erie Otters won their eighth straight game with a four-goal outburst in the third en route to an 8-4 win over the Sarnia Sting in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday.NEW YORK -- Jordan Gathers hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and St. Bonaventure stunned No. 18 Saint Louis 71-68 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament Friday. The ninth-seeded Bonnies (18-14) came into the tourney on a four-game losing streak before beating La Salle on Thursday. They trailed the top-seeded Billikens by 10 points at halftime but rallied behind a swarming defence and clutch 3-point shooting. Saint Louis big man Dwayne Evans, who had hit three 3-pointers all season, made a 3 over 7-foot Youssou Ndoye with 20. Jimmy Wilson Green Jersey. 9 seconds left to tie the game at 68-68. Matthew Wright and Charlon Kloof led St. Bonaventure with 22 points. Gathers had just two points before making the winner. Mike McCall scored 21 for Saint Louis (26-6), which lost its first game in its attempt to defend its A-10 tournament title. The Billikens have dropped four of five. ' ' ' |

SAN FRANCISCO -- As good as it felt to shut out the World Series champions for eight innings, getting a pair of hits against two-time Cy Young winner TimLincecum really made MikeLeakes day. Saints #77 Jersey . Leake held the struggling San Francisco hitters in check and started two rallies with his bat as the Cincinnati Reds gave Lincecum one of his worst beatings ever in a 10-2 victory over the Giants on Saturday. "I take pride in my hitting," Leake said. "I dont like to get out. Its more fun to get hits than it is to pitch good sometimes. ... Anytime Im squaring balls up, its pretty fun." BrandonPhillips hit a two-run double and scored twice and Torontos JoeyVotto knocked the San Francisco ace out with an RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Reds their second win in three games in San Francisco. Lincecum (5-5) matched his career worst by allowing seven runs in four-plus innings, marking the first time since his rookie year in 2007 that he had allowed seven earned runs in a game. "I was just kind of flying all over the place," Lincecum said. "I didnt have any command of the zone at all. To me, thats just kind of going back to the drawing board and getting my mechanics straight." With the Giants struggling to generate any offence of late, that cushion proved to be more than enough for Leake (6-2), who improved to 3-0 with a 1.93 earned-run average in four starts since a brief stint back in the minors. "Mainly my head is just back on straight a little bit," Leake said. "I think I lost it there for a little." Leake allowed four hits -- including an infield popup by EliWhiteside that third baseman ScottRolen lost for a single -- and struck out a career-high eight. Leake had a 21.21 ERA in two previous outings against the Giants, including giving up six runs while retiring one batter in a relief outing in his final appearance of the season last August. Leake also started a pair of rallies at the plate against Lincecum. Leake doubled to lead a the two-run third inning when the Reds scored on a groundout by JayBruce and a wild pitch by Lincecum to make it 3-0. Leake then singled to start the four-run fifth. DrewStubbs followed with a walk and both players scored on Phillips double to left field. Vottos RBI double ended Lincecums briefest outing of the season and Rolen added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0. "That was a rare outing by Lincecum," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Thats a two-time Cy Young award winner. Hes one of the best in the business. He wasnt as sharp today as he usually is." Lincecum allowed seven hits and walked four and struck out a career-low one batter. He struggled with his control all afternoon, throwing 37 balls compared to 36 strikes, and had two wild pitches. He generated only two swings and misses all day -- both to Stubbs, who struck to open the game. That was the high point of the game for Lincecum who allowed an RBI single to RyanHanigan in the second inning, the two runs in the third and four runs in the fifth. Lincecum now has a 7.66 ERA in four starts since throwing 133 pitches in a shutout victory against Oakland last month. "More than anything his fastball commands off," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It was an off day for Timmy, I dont know how else to tell you, especially with his command. Thats a good hitting ballclub and youre going to pay for it if youre off. Theres not much else to it, really. He feels good, hes healthy. Hes just having trouble getting the ball where he wants." The Reds, who went just 2-8 on their last road trip, have matched that total in three games in San Francisco. The pitching has had a big part in that with JohnnyCueto and two relievers combining on a 3-0 shutout Thursday night before Leakes strong start. PatBurrell broke up the shutout with a two-run homer in the ninth off CarlosFisher -- his first longball in 96 at-bats. Cincinnati has gone a season-high four games without a home run, winning two of them. Notes: Leake leads Reds pitchers with seven hits. ... Lincecum allowed seven runs, but only three earned runs, on May 16 against Colorado and seven earned runs to Toronto on June 13, 2007. ... The Giants signed INF BillHall to replace injured 2B FreddySanchez. Hall entered the game in the fifth inning and walked in his first plate appearance for San Francisco. ... The Reds are the only NL team that Lincecum has not beaten, excluding the Giants. He is 0-1 in three starts against Cincinnati. Morten Andersen Saints Jersey . Jones had to work hard against Korean skip Kim Jisun and didnt hold a lead until the seventh end. Jones, lead Dawn McEwen, second Jill Officer and third Kaitlyn Lawes were 8-0 going into the game and had already clinched a berth in the semifinals. Saints #3 Jersey . -- Garret Sparks made 31 saves as the Toronto Marlies beat the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-1 in American Hockey League play Tuesday.ARDMORE, Pa. -- The affection was genuine. Even better was beating Jack Nicklaus in a playoff. So when Lee Trevino got his hands on that U.S. Open trophy in 1971, the guy who never lacked for one-liners gushed, "I love Merion, and I dont even know her last name." For this generation of stars, Merion is more like a blind date. No other course with four U.S. Opens had to wait such a long time -- 32 years -- for another chance to test the worlds best players. Even with TigerWoods back to No. 1 and winning at a ridiculous rate, so much of the talk at this major championship has been about Merion. For years, it was considered too small to handle such a big tournament and the big hitters with their modern equipment. And with soft greens from more than 6 inches of rain in the last week, the question is whether the course will yield the kind of scores rarely seen at the toughest test in golf. On Thursday, the mystery of Merion will start to unfold. "Its been how long, 32 years? And with all the technology since then?" SteveStricker said as he headed to the first tee Wednesday for one last practice round. "Someone asked me the other day about someone shooting a 62. And what I wanted to say was, Youre crazy. But you just dont know. We dont know whats going to happen. And in a way, thats kind of cool." Not so cool was the weather expected for the opening round. Merion already took a beating last Friday when more than 3 inches of rain sent water over the edges of some bunkers and left small streams on fairways and greens. More rain on Monday caused the course to be closed three times. The forecast called for increasing clouds, gusts and showers Thursday morning, with stronger storms likely to arrive around noon. "Sure, we want it firm and fast," USGA vice-president Thomas OToole said Wednesday. "We happen to play a sport thats played outdoors. We received significant rain over the last week, and some tell us that well have even more significant rain tomorrow. So its not a perfect world. Its not a perfect game. But we take what were dealt with." Whether a golf course is big or small, soft greens typically are a recipe for low scores. Then again, Merion is not a typical golf course. It measures 6,996 yards on the scorecard -- the shortest of any major championship in nine years -- and has a stretch of seven holes in the middle that are short even by yesterdays standards. Compare those holes with the scorecard from when Ben Hogan won the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion, and four of those holes were actually longer by a few yards in Hogans day. Players typically reach for the wedge to chip out of the rough around the greens at the U.S. Open. At Merion, they could be hitting wedge into the green for their second shot on at least six holes. Thats what has caused all the clamour about low scores. And with the rain, its reminiscent of how Congressional was vulnerable two years ago, when RoryMcIlroy shattered U.S. Open scoring records at 16-under 268. "Ive been reading about how many scoring records are going to be broken," NickWatney said. "Ive been around here once. And I think thats insane. Its funny to me. People look at the yardage and think its going to be easy. Saints #13 Jersey. Even if its soft, the greens are sloped. The rough is thick. OK, well have wedges into some of the greens, but that doesnt mean you make birdie on all those holes. Theres enough tough holes to counteract that." Even so, the winning score has gone down in each of the four previous U.S. Opens at Merion, from Olin Dutra at 13-over par in 1934 to David Graham winning at 7-under in 1981, the last time this major championship was here. "Where did David Graham shoot 7-under? From there?" NickWatney asked as he pointed the end of his driver to a spot some 30 yards from where he was standing. "Because he didnt do it from here." Watney was standing in the middle of the putting green. He took three steps to his right and was standing on the 14th tee. As an example of longer holes being made more difficult, a new tee on the 464-yard hole is where members practice putting. The biggest fear with rain on the horizon is what will happen the rest of the week. The forecast is reasonable after Thursday, but in soft conditions, balls start to pick up clumps of mud as the sun starts to dry the course. And while players often are allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls in the fairway in muddy conditions on the PGA Tour, they dont do that at the U.S. Open. Remember, the USGA famously referred to the local rule as "lift, clean and cheat." "We wouldnt be adopting that rule this week," OToole said. It all begins with CliffKresge hitting the opening shot of the 113th U.S. Open at 6:45 a.m. Thursday -- weather permitting, of course. Woods, McIlroy and Masters champion AdamScott play Thursday afternoon in the power grouping of Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the world. SergioGarcia plays on the opposite side of the draw, teeing off Thursday morning. So does PhilMickelson, who left Philadelphia on Monday when the weather was bad to practice in San Diego. He planned on being home, anyway, so he could watch his oldest daughter graduate from the eighth-grade. Mickelson was scheduled to arrive about 4:15 a.m. Thursday, just three hours before his tee time. Stricker called Merion the "longest short course Ive ever played." GraemeMcDowell is another guy who isnt buying into the fear over low scoring. "Everyone is saying that its going to be 62s and 63s on this golf course, which I kind of disagree with at the minute," McDowell said. "I think 10 or 11 of these golf holes are as tough as any U.S. Open Ive seen." The lowest score in major championship history is 63, and it has happened only four times in the U.S. Open -- Johnny Miller at Oakmont in 1973 on a soggy course, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf on the same day at Baltusrol in 1980 during a wet week, and VijaySingh on a rain-softened course at Olympia Fields in 2003. "Youve got more birdie opportunities than ever," ErnieEls said. "Im playing my 21st U.S. Open, so Ive seen a lot of trouble out there. But this is one where you can get on a run. You can make some 3s. Thats not a number thats really familiar in the U.S. Open. But as I say, you start missing shots, the rough is as bad as Ive ever seen it." ' ' ' |

Kyle Long . -- KyleBlanks homered in his home debut at the Coliseum and DerekNorris capped Oaklands five-homer day with a grand slam and the Athletics snapped a season-long four-game losing streak with a 10-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Martellus Bennett . Maxime Presseaults goal at 13:59 of the second period broke a 2-2 deadlock for the Foreurs, who trailed the series 3-2 before winning back-to-back games, and Guillaume Gelinas and Pierre-Maxime Poudrier also scored.Justin Wadsworth may be the head coach of the Canadian cross-country team, but that doesnt mean he wont help a rival skier in need. When Russias Anton Gafarov crashed and broke a ski during a semifinal heat in the mens cross-country sprint, Wadsworth was right there to help. Gafarov was clearly out of the race, but still wanted to finish in front of the home crowd. But his ski was too badly damaged in the crash and he took another tumble into the snow. Thats when Wadsworth went to help. The Canadian coach ran onto the slope, spare ski in hand, and quickly fastened it to Gafarovs boot, drawing a cheer from the crowd. Though the Russian was three minutes behhind his competitors, he still finished the race thanks to the Canadian coachs help. Jon Bostic. It brought back memories of the 2006 Olympics in Torino, when Norwegian coach Bjornar Haakensmoen helped out Canadian cross-country skier Sara Renner in the team sprint event. Renner broke her ski pole halfway through the race, and Haakensmoen provided her with a new one. Ironically, the move prevented Norway from winning a medal in the event, as Renner and Beckie Scott won silver, while the Norwegians finished in fourth. As a token of their appreciation, fans across Canada donated five tonnes of maple syrup to Haakensmoen as a thank you gift. ' ' ' |

WASHINGTON - Randy Wittman learned long ago to focus on what he can control. wholesale nfl jerseys . Thats what he did over the past 2 1/2 years with the Washington Wizards. Wittmans approach helped turn the Wizards from pushover to playoff winners. Now hell have a chance to stick around following a 44-38 season, a 15-win improvement from last year, after the Wizards gave him a contract extension. "I think over the last couple of years what weve begun to establish here, continuity I think is important," Wittman said Wednesday in the hallway near the practice court at the Verizon Center. "Im appreciative of the opportunity to continue on." The Wizards reached the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and won their first post-season series since 2005. They accomplished it in the final year of Wittmans contract and under a preseason mandate to make the playoffs from owner Ted Leonsis. "I was here when it was not pretty. When you see it change, when you see the things that youve implemented begin to work, you want to continue on," the 54-year-old Wittman said. Wittman guided the Wizards to a first-round win over the Chicago Bulls before losing in six games to the top-seeded Indiana Pacers in their Eastern Conference semifinal. "Over the last 2 1/2 years really, Randy has established a great culture, a hard-working culture, a defensive-oriented team," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. "Weve been a top-10 defensive team in the league the last two years. Weve made good progress. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but were headed in the right direction." Asked if retaining Wittman was an easy decision," Grunfeld stated," Yes, it was." Having already coached rebuilding squads with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves, Wittman took over as head coach when Flip Saunders was fired in January 2012. As was the case in those other spots, losses starting piling up in Washington. Wittman has the worst regular-season record of anyone who has coached at least 400 NBA games 191-329, a .367 winning percentage since the league started in 1946. "Job security is fleeting, as we all know in this business," said Wittman, who played in the NBA for nine seasons. "If you worry about it, youre not going to do your job well." With JohnWall sidelined, the Wizards opened the 2012-13 season with a 4-28 record. When their point guard returned, Washington finished 24-25. With Wall healthy and turning into a first-time All-Star alongside backcourt partner BradleyBeal, Washington ended the 2013-14 season fifth in the Eastern Conference. Washington has plenty of decisions remaining. Two starters centre MarcinGortat and forward TrevorAriza are unrestricted free agents. Overall, 10 players are entering some level of free agency or the organization must decide whether to exercise a team option. Though Wittman and Grunfeld have stated a desire to the keep the core intact, the roster could certainly look different next season. But the man on the sideline will be familiar. cheap jerseys . Patrick Deslisle-Houde and David Rose each scored in the second to give the fourth-seeded Redmen a 3-1 lead after Jean-Philippe Mathieu scored in the first. jerseys from china . -- Oakland Raiders running back MauriceJones-Drew is being sued in Florida, accused of punching a bouncer at a St. ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- One night after being beaten by the lowly Hamilton Bulldogs, the St. Johns IceCaps bounced back in a big way. Spencer Machacek scored three goals as the IceCaps hammered the Bulldogs 6-0 on Wednesday night in American Hockey League action. IceCaps coach Keith McCambridge was clearly frustrated after Tuesdays 4-2 loss to Hamilton, but was very pleased with Wednesdays response. "We came out and played the way we set the bar to play all season long," he said. "Overall, we had everybody playing their A game tonight. The biggest thing was the work ethic, the compete, the checking was there, everything was in place that gives you a chance to win a game tonight." McCambridge said it was crucial for the IceCaps to avoid consecutive poor showings as the playoffs draw near. "Frustrating when you see what happened last night. Is that going to happen during the course of the season? Yes. The biggest thing is you want to make sure that you dont let those run in consecutive games," he said. "That was a really good bounce-back game for that team in the dressing room." Zach Redmond, Jason Gregoire and Aaron Gagnon also scored for the IceCaps (38-16-7). St. Johns captain Jason Jaffray had three assists. St. Johns goaltender Ed Pasquale had a quiet night in his shutout, making only 12 saves. The Bulldogs goaltenders both had a ton of work, with starter Nathan Lawson making 25 saves, and Robert Mayer stopping 20 shots in relief. The IceCaps opened the scoring when Machacek sscored at 15:18 of the first period. cheap nfl jerseys. Machacek pulled a spin move behind Hamiltons net before backhanding the puck towards Lawson, who misplayed the shot and the puck trickled into the net. "When (Machacek) is on top of his game, when hes playing in straight lines, hes a really effective player," McCambridge said. "It was good to see him get on the board tonight, good to see him play the way Spencer Machacek should play." Redmond scored at 17:11 when he launched a slap-shot through a screen. The IceCaps outshot the Bulldogs (27-28-7) 17-4 in the first period, which was indicative of how the rest of the game would go. St. Johns took the game by the throat in the second period, with Machacek completing his hat trick to put St. Johns up 4-0. The fourth goal of the game ended Lawsons evening. Gagnon made it 5-0 at 15:25 of the second period. Jaffray and Jason King exchanged slick passes before finding Gagnon open on the far post for the easy tap-in. Gregoire added the only third period goal when a Kevin Clark shot bounced off Gregoires chest as he was falling. "All four lines were going tonight for sure," Machacek said. "Sometimes the bounces are going your way, and tonight I thought we got some bounces. But we worked hard for them as well, and we definitely worked hard for the full 60 minutes." The IceCaps went 2-for-6 on the power play while Bulldogs 0-for-1. St. Johns faces off against the Manchester Monarchs Saturday and Sunday at Mile One Centre. ' ' ' |

Eric Decker . - The way MarkTeixeira looks at it, getting booed on the road is a badge of honour.Guelph, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Despite having a losing record, the Montreal Alouettes find themselves in the 101st Grey Cup Playoffs, pitted against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Division Semifinal at Alumni Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Catch the action on TSN starting at noon et/9am pt. This time last year, the Alouettes were the cream of the crop in the division, sporting an 11-7 mark, but plenty has happened to Montreal in 2013 to keep the squad from reprising their role as the best in the East. In addition to firing first-year head coach Dan Hawkins after only a few weeks, the Als also lost the services of one of the greatest quarterbacks in league history in Anthony Calvillo. There were several other injuries and hurdles to overcome in order for Montreal to get at least this far, not the least of which was winning four of the last six games on the schedule. Granted, the team did benefit from Winnipeg being simply awful in its own division, as well as Edmonton fumbling along over in the West. In 2012, this division had only two representatives in Montreal and Toronto, the latter being the eventual champion, with both the Blue Bombers and Tiger- Cats sitting at home with 6-12 records. But this time around Hamilton, which was a dismal 1-8 on the road a year ago, returned to respectability with four wins in nine away outings and an overall mark of 10-8. However, the start to the new campaign was not entirely encouraging, as the Cats won just one of five games coming out of the gate. A three-game win streak brought the group back around, as did four wins in the last five games of the regular season While he may not have been around to finish every game for the Tiger-Cats this season, the good news for the offense is that Henry Burris was one of only two quarterbacks in the league to start all 19 games for their respective clubs, and the other (Mike Reilly) failed to make the Edmonton Eskimos very good. Burris came up just 73 passing yards short of 5,000 on the season as he led the CFL in that category. He managed to complete 65.8 percent of his attempts and tie for the second-most aerial majors with 24, but at the same time hee was guilty of throwing the most interceptions (19), something the Montreal defense will have to focus on. Brian Dawkins. As luck would have it, the Alouettes have one of the top pass defenders in the league this year in Geoff Tisdale who led the CFL in interceptions with seven, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Not that far behind Tisdale was Jerald Brown who had five picks of his own. Montreal matched Saskatchewan for the most interceptions with 24 this year, yet the Als still ended up with a minus-three in turnover margin. Unlike the Cats who had the luxury of fielding the same signal caller one week to the next, Montreal had a total of four different starters at the position, the most in the league. As it stands, it appears as though the job has been handed over to former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith who has been the starter in each of the last three outings. The Ohio State product has had marginal success lately with nine passing touchdowns and a pair of majors on the ground, but at the same time he has tossed five INTs and averaged a mere 2.5 yards per rushing attempt. While Hamilton was watching from afar last season, Montreal hosted the Argonauts in the division finals and ended up on the wrong side of a 27-20 decision, allowing Toronto to move on to the Grey Cup where it shocked Calgary, 35-22, at Rogers Centre. These teams faced each other a total of three times during the regular season, with Hamilton posting two victories, including a narrow 27-24 final in the most recent encounter two weeks ago at home. The winner this time around will be back in action next weekend, clashing with Toronto for the right to compete in the championship game against a representative from the West Division on Nov. 24 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina. From a historical standpoint, both of these teams have appeared in the Grey Cup title tilt a total of 18 times, with Hamilton taking the honors on eight occasions and Montreal raising the trophy seven times. The Als last won it all in 2010 with a 21-18 triumph over Saskatchewan, the teams second straight championship and the third appearance in as many years in the final game. ' ' ' |

ay that game, then well play it, too," van Riemsdyk s
TORONTO Standing just outside the Toronto MapleLeafs dressing room after yet another defeat in the shootout, JamesReimer slammed his right hand against a door in an unusual show of frustration. Packers #59 Jersey . "It really sucks for a goalie when you lose," he said a few minutes later. Two pucks found their way behind Reimerin a 3-2 shootout defeattothe Bruins on Monday night. The Leafs have yet to win in the shootout this season, falling for the fourth time at TD Garden on Monday night. While they emerged from a home and home set with Boston clutching three important points they sit sixth in the East with 38 points theres an argument to be made that all four were there for the taking shootout notwithstanding. The 25-year-old in goalshouldered the weight of the shootout decision again afterward, but its increasinglydifficult to assign blame entirely his way. The fact is,TylerBozak remains the only Leaf to actually score in the shootout this season; he is now 3-4 after another successful attempt on Monday night. Collectively, Toronto shooters nowrankthird-worstin the shootout this year (3-21, 14.3 per cent), with the 10candidatesbesides Bozak now empty in all 17 attempts. "The shootout seems to be a big thorn in our side right now," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle acknowledged afterward. "We do work on it and we do provide video of what the opposition likes to do, what their goaltenders are like. But again, its an individual thing, its 1-on-1, player versus another player, all you can really do is provide the information that you think is important to the situation and thats what we try to do. And then we try to work on it with our own guys and our own goaltenders." "I think Im just saving them all for the game," NazemKadri, now empty in four attempts, managed to crack after the game. He wasstopped by TuukkaRask on his latest attempt Monday. "I dont know exactly what it is. I feel like every single time Im going down I have the goaltender beat, its just a matter of elevating[thepuck]a couple more inches or just being a little more patient, but I feel like Im making the right moves." Reimer meanwhile dropped to 3-8 lifetime in the shootout after yielding goals to TylerSeguin and PatriceBergeron. His career. 650 save percentage is actually middle of the pack among active goaltenders. However, the 25-year-old has posted a .619 mark on 21 shots this seasonwhich ranks 14th out of the21 goaltenders who have faced at least 10 attempts. "You know you take it for what it is," he said. "Obviously you want to win it and it sucks when you lose." The Leafs have tried to maintain an even approach as it pertains to the shootout, but they cant help but be frustrated by the points theyve failed to snatch as a result of it. In a playoff race that will only tighten in the coming weeks, those points are all too important to keep losing. "We cant focus on the negative of losing the point tonight," Carlyle said. "We dont want to get too low on the shootouts or too high when we winthem." Five Points 1. Lost leads, missed opportunities The Leafs held a lead of 2-0 which evaporated amid a valliant Boston pushback. JoffreyLupul (power-play) and Nik Kulemin scored six minutes apart in the middle frame to put the Leafs in front by adeceptively safe margin. It was less than two minutesafter the Kulemin goal that MilanLucic broke free of CodyFranson and RyanHamilton to score the Bruins first goal, cutting the deficit quickly in half. The Leafs proceeded to come up dry with two critical opportunities on the man advantage, one with DennisSeidenberg in the box towards the end of the second, another early in the thirdwith PatriceBergeron whistled off. "Our unit tonight just wasnt running on the same ropes I guess you could say," Franson explained of a unitthat also includes DionPhaneuf, PhilKessel, JamesvanRiemsdyk and TylerBozak, quick to note his own struggles with the puck firstly. It was about eight minutes after the unpunishedBergeron infraction that the same Bruins pivotknotted the score at two, the resulting shootout frustration detailed above. Grasping three of a possible four points against a team of the Bruins caliber is admirable, but lost leads and missed opportunities cannot be ignored. "We know the mistakes we made and we know what bit us," Franson said. "I think we have to be able to sharpen that up for Florida." 2. Kessel vs. Chara A fact that speaks to the dominance of ZdenoChara over his former teammate: PhilKessel has yet to score an even-strength goal against in 22 games against his former team. The 25-year-old has managed only three career markers against the Bruins, all three coming on the man advantage. Bruins coach Claude Julien is rightfully obsessive in launching his six-foot-nine goliath on Kessel, manically deploying him anytime Kessel is on the ice, home or away. "Thats their mandate," Carlyle said. "They make no bones about it. Every time that [Kessel line is] on the ice, theyll change one D just to make sure [Charas] out there thats part of star players in the league having to play against the best players in the league." 3. JVR Cold spell His Leafs career took off with a bang; 11 goals in the first 18 games this season. But since that point, JamesvanRiemsdyk has cooled off in the goal-sniping department socring just three goals in the past 15 games and none in the past six, a season-long dry spell. "Try to stick with it," said van Riemsdyk prior to Mondays game, who also has just four assists since February 21st. "I think Ive been doing some good things and some times you just dont get the puck luck. I think Im continuing to go to the areas where you get the goals at, its just a matter of maybe getting a bounce or having a puck sit there a couple inches closer and maybe you dont hit a pipe and it goes in and things look a little different." van Riemsdyk may not be far off as far as puck luck is concerned. Through the opening two months, the 23-year-old was firing at an inflated 17 per cent clip, far above his three-year career average of 10 per cent. In the month of March, he has dipped to about 8 per cent, meaning some leveling out is likely if his game ramps up to the level it had been previously. van Riemsdyk failed to land a shot against the Bruins on Mondayand was benched for the final 10 minutes of the third period and all of overtime. "I think JVR has got some work to do in some areas," Carlyle said of his younger winger, who still logged 18-plus minutes. "Hes been a great player for us but I think hes in a little bit of a dry spell for us right now. We need him to get his feet moving and start to create more." 4. Igniting Kulemin One shining testament to NazemKadri this season has been his ability to make others better. From MattFrattin to ClarkeMacArthur, Kadri has helped improve the performance of every player hes played with. There is perhaps no better example of this than with Nik Kulemin. Kulemin has tallied a point in four of the five games in which he has played alongside Kadri, with three goals in that brief span. "Hes a good player," Kulemin said of Kadri, who found him open for a breakaway goal against the Bruins. "He sees the rink very well and passes it at the right time." The 26-year-old Kuleminadded of his recent return to goal-scoring prowess (now with five this season), "I think I just started shooting more and I have more opportunities to shoot because Naz has a lot of attention on him." 5. Kadri on the draw One element of Kadris game that will continue to be tested as his responsibilities increase is his work on the draw. Squaring off against the leagues top faceoff team on Monday, the 22-year-old finished with just four wins on 18 tries, including a 3-for-14 showing against Bergeron, the top faceoff man in the league this season (62%). "Hes just a smart guy," Kadri said of Bergeron. "Hes strong on his stick and even sometimes when youre looking just to tie up his stick and make it a foot-battle it seems like hes always winning those as well." Quote of the Night "It really sucks for a goalie when you lose." -JamesReimer, on the shootout. Quote of the Night II "I think Im just saving them all for the game, I dont know exactly what it is." -NazemKadri, on the team-wide struggles in the shootout. Stat Watch 14.3 per cent: Torontos shooting percentage in the shootout (3-for-21). 3-for-4: TylerBozak in the shootout, the one Leaf to score this season. 0-for-17: Shooters excluding Bozak in the shootout. 0: Career even-strength goals for PhilKessel against Boston. 26-for-70: Leafs on the draw versus the Bruins (37 per cent). 5-Game Point Streak: Kadri extended the streak with an assist on Kulemins goal, now with 10 points total in that span (three goals, seven assists). 88-for-103: Leafs penalty kill this season, fifth overall on the year. 9-6-2: Toronto road record. Minute Watch 21:01: MikeKostka. The 27-year-old returned to the lineup in place of the injured John-MichaelLiles. Up Next Last place in the Eastern Conference, the struggling FloridaPanthers visit the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday for the second end ofa Torontoback-to-back set. Packers #2 Jersey ., but it was always a tough ticket to get into Madison Square Garden. Just once before he got on the ice at the age of 12 for an intermission pee-wee shootout, and then Monday night at the age of 28 the Los Angeles Kings goaltender made a much more memorable appearance. Demetri Goodson Packers Jersey .Y. -- The Buffalo Bills could identify a new owner within three months, leading Gov. TORONTO -- JamesvanRiemsdyk tugged at the Toronto Maple Leafs logo on his chest, mimicking the celebration P.K.Subban made after an overtime goal two nights earlier. That wasnt a coincidence. Van Riemsdyk was on edge after some taunting from the Montreal Canadiens defenceman but waited until after scoring the game-winning goal Saturday night before letting that emotion show through. It was tension that was building throughout a 5-3 Leafs victory that was a showcase for the rivalry. "Im usually not one to engage in stuff like that, but I was a little bit fired up," van Riemsdyk said. "It just kind of happened." Those are the things that happen when the juices are flowing and emotions are heightened as they were for this game between the Leafs and Habs. Of the 19,667 fans in attendance, more than a few were cheering for Montreal, and it made for a much more raucous atmosphere than usual at Air Canada Centre. "If you dont get shivers and chills on Toronto-Montreal on a Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada, either in Montreal or Toronto, then I dont think you understand the true meaning of the game here in Canada," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said after his teams season-high fourth consecutive victory. With the teams trading chances back and forth, it was an excellent example of what the NHL is supposed to offer. And even though eight total goals were scored, neither the Leafs JonathanBernier (30 saves on 33 shots), nor possible Canadian Olympic starter CareyPrice of the Habs (25 saves on 29 shots) could be faulted. Instead, this was a case of two offences getting the job done. Before van Riemsdyk scored the game-winner at 14:27 of the third, CodyFranson, PhilKessel and MasonRaymond also scored for the Leafs (25-20-5), while BrendanGallagher, BrianGionta and DavidDesharnais scored for the Habs (27-17-5). "Were a team that was pushing the pace and we were skating well," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. "Individual mistakes cost games. Thats where its disappointing. We give goals. Theyre not even supposed to be scoring chances." But scoring chances were readily available. Toronto centre NazemKadri had two of the games best passes, setting up Franson for the Leafs first goal and then Raymond for his on the power play. It was a breakout night for Kadri, who has been the subject of criticism and trade rumours lately. "I wanted to come out and have a big game," Kadri said. "Obviously the magnitude of this game was huge. For us to chase that top spot in the division is still a realistic goal for us." The Leafs victory moved them to within four points of the third-place Habs. They still trail the Atlantic Division-leading Boston Bruins by seven points and have played three more games. But when the focus was on one game against rival Montreal, the Leafs brought close to their A-game. Carlyle called their start by far the best of the season, while Gionta wasnt thrilled with how he and his teammates responded. "The first 10 minutes we were fairly slow getting going, but after that I thought we diid a good job of forcing the play and getting some good chances," Montreals captain said. Davante Adams Packers Jersey. "Its definitely a tough one to lose." It wouldve been a tough one for the Leafs to lose after their strong start and considering the emotional investment. "That was a statement game for this team," Kadri said. "Its the Montreal Canadiens. Theyre one of the better teams in the conference and obviously theyre ahead of us in the division, as well. The rivalry speaks for itself. We wanted to come out here, home ice, and give these fans something to cheer about." Montreal fans had something to cheer about early thanks to stellar goaltending from Price, who kept the Habs in the game despite being out-shot by a wide margin. Chants of "Carey" became jeering ones later on when Leafs fans got on him, loud enough that the goalie at the other end could hear them. "The crowd was pretty amazing tonight," Bernier said. "It felt like a playoff game." No Leafs players were alive the last time the Leafs and Habs met in the playoffs -- 1979. Only Montreals Gionta, AndreiMarkov, DanielBriere and Francis Boullion had been born by then. But a lack of recent playoff history didnt seem to hurt Saturday night, thanks in part to Subban skating by the bench after Gallaghers goal and giving the Leafs some motivation. "He was saying some stuff to our bench and we werent thrilled about that," van Riemsdyk said. "Its hockey. Hes got to do what hes got to do -- hes a great player, its fun to play against players like that. Obviously theres some emotions that were flying around out there." Subban did not speak to reporters after the loss. He was a central topic of conversation in hockey circles since his celebration of an overtime goal against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night brought some criticism. Subban flashed the crest on his jersey a few times before going down the tunnel. Don Cherry said on "Hockey Night in Canada" that "all (Subban) does is pump up the other team." "He has to stop that stuff," Cherry said. "Its absolutely ridiculous." Van Riemsdyk wouldnt even go that far, choosing instead to show Subban up after scoring his 19th goal of the season. "If they wanted to play that game, then well play it, too," van Riemsdyk said. Van Riemsdyk insisted popping his jersey wasnt a pre-meditated act. Instead, it was the release of a build-up of emotions that went beyond just redirecting TylerBozaks pass past Price. Asked earlier in the day about goal celebrations, van Riemsdyk said that he preferred an understated approach. His teammates didnt mind when he veered from that just once. "Obviously you get excited when you score," Kadri said. "Thats on JvR -- he likes scoring goals, so more power to him." NOTES -- JoonasNattinen made his NHL debut for Montreal and played 1:45, all in the first period. Nattinen replaced ReneBourque, who was a healthy scratch. ... Toronto called up TroyBodie from its AHL affiliate to replace the injured DavidClarkson. ' ' ' |

with 44 goals
MALMO, Sweden -- Anthony Mantha looked more relieved than jubilant after his three goals helped Canada start the world junior championship with a victory. jerseys from china . It may be because there had been doubts the Longueuil, Que., native would make the team -- despite lighting up the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this season -- because of his questionable defensive play. No one doubted his ability to put the puck in the net, as Mantha demonstrated with a hat trick in Canadas 7-2 win over Germany on Thursday. "Its a great feeling," the lanky, six-foot-four right winger said. "For me, personally, I had to get a big game going and I think thats what I did." It helped that Mantha was on a line with perhaps Canadas most dynamic playmaker in Jonathan Drouin, who assisted on all three of his goals -- two on power plays and one at even strength. But Mantha, the grandson of former NHL forward Andre Pronovost, scores wherever he plays. He had 35 goals in only 32 games with the Val dOr Foreurs before joining Team Canada two weeks ago for the run-up to the world juniors. He has 85 goals in 99 games over the last season and a half. Coach Brent Sutter said what clinched his spot was that ability to put the puck in the net, which there is not a lot of on this squad compared to past world junior teams. Sutter hopes a crash course in 200-foot hockey will make the Detroit Red Wings prospect a more complete player as the tournament goes on. "He can score goals, but there are other aspects of his game he needs to continue to work on," said Sutter. "Things Ive talked to him about one on one. "Its simple. Its being a competitor in all three zones and making sure hes responsible in all three zones. Not just for this tournament, but for him to be a good pro. Especially with the organization hell go to in Detroit. Thats what they expect there. You cant just play the offensive side of the puck." Sutter said Mantha wants to learn and feels he is already "a better player now than when he joined the team 11 days ago. That comes from our conversations. He understands that hes not going to get on the ice if hes only going to be a power-play guy." He got a passing grade in two-way play against the Germans, who were overmatched but took advantage of some early Canadian sloppiness to keep the score close through the first 15 minutes of play. Mantha has a remarkably quick release for a big man, and having the clever Drouin laying passes on his stick could be a vital asset as the tournament moves on and the competition gets tougher. He said his grandfather, who scored 109 goals in 556 NHL games from 1957 to 1968 for Montreal, Boston, Detroit and the Minnesota North Stars, was a key influence in his hockey development. He said Pronovost taught him "three key points" to success, but wont reveal them all. "One is work," he offered. But he still went into the teams selection camp two weeks ago in Toronto looking to prove he can do more than score. "For sure I had to make an impression," he said. "Not every player was guaranteed a spot and I had to battle through it. I got great news and now Im trying to carry it on." Drouin has played with Mantha before in an exhibition series and feels that chemistry is developing. "Anthonys a big guy," said the third overall pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning. "Hes hard to play against in the corners and everything. I try to use my hands and speed and I think we complement each other pretty well." The Canadian team got a rousing welcome from the crowd of 1,831 -- nearly all wearing Hockey Canada jerseys -- at the 5,800-seat Isstadion, but still looked nervous as the game began. The Germans got the opening goal off a faceoff in the Canada zone as Dorian Saeftel put a shot through traffic that fooled goalie Jake Paterson only 1:35 into the game. After Josh Anderson and Mantha gave Canada a lead, Janik Moser tied it for Germany after defenceman Adam Pelech whiffed on a clearing attempt. Then Canada took over as Mantha and Bo Horvat got goals before the intermission, Sam Reinhart and Mantha added goals in the second period and Nic Petan finished a play engineered by 16-year-old Conner McDavid in the third. McDavid had two assists, while his linemate Reinhart also had two points. Their line with Horvat could have had several if not for some fine saves by Shawinigan Cataractes goalie Marvin Cupper. "I think I played pretty well," said McDavid. "I missed a whole bunch of chances that Im pretty embarrassed about, but I thought I played an all right game. "That shift where Bo and Reino set me up for a couple of breakaways and the goalie made a couple of good saves -- I was beating myself up pretty good about it, but they laid off me. They were good about it." The shots were 30-24 for Canada, but the game was not nearly that close. A tougher test comes Saturday when Canada plays its second group stage game against the Czech Republic. Notes: Defenceman Griffin Reinhart sat out the first of three games he will miss due to a suspension incurred at last years world juniors. . . Germany has six players from Canadian junior teams, including Prince Albert star Leon Draisaitl who had a mostly quiet game, and another six who play in the U.S. . . Canada has its second youngest team ever at 18 years 10 months 25 days. Only the 1987 team that was disqualified after a brawl with the Soviets was younger. wholesale nfl jerseys . Brendan Rodgers team had won its first three games and a fourth consecutive victory would have marked the clubs best start ever in the Premier League. But Michus second-half equalizer ruined Liverpools plans after goals from Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses had given the visitors a 2-1 lead following Jonjo Shelveys opener.cheap nfl jerseys . Ecclestone said at the beginning of a four-hour personal statement read out in German by his lawyers that he was "grateful" to be able to give his side of the story -- though he told judges that he would answer questions from the Munich state court through his lawyers, rather than personally.(SportsNetwork.com) - Just when the sun brightens a bit for the Vancouver Canucks, it is followed up with a torrential downpour. The Canucks will be without their leading goal scorer for the rest of their road trip, one that resumes on Friday night against the Washington Capitals. Wednesday should have been a night that left the Canucks feeling good about themselves. They snapped a seven-game road losing streak with a 3-2 shootout win over the Winnipeg Jets in the opener of a four-game swing and saw forward AlexandreBurrows net his first two goals of the season. Of course, the good came with the bad as RyanKesler left in the game following a knee-on-knee collision and went back to Vancouver for further tests. It is not known how long he will be out, but head coach John Tortorella did admit that Kesler will not play for the rest of this trip, one that includes games versus the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Kesler was mentioned in a number of trade rumors before last weeks deadline, but the Canucks did not pull the trigger on a deal to move the forward, who has 22 goals on the season. Keslers 40 points are tied with DanielSedin, currently out with a strained left hamstring, and one back of HenrikSedin for the team lead. Minus the forward, EddieLack made 32 saves through overtime before stopping all three skaters he faced in the shootout. Vancouver then earned the extra point on ChrisHiggins third-round tally. "We lose (Kesler) before the third and we get down, so yeah, I thought we played hard right on through. And thats two out of the last three games that we have played well in the third period, so good for them," Tortorella said. "Theyve hung in there, theyve hung together. Losing a big guy like (Kesler), I thought they stuck together as a group. It was really nice to see." So was the production from Burrows, who scored his first goals since April 15 of last year. That gave him a gap of 40 games between goals in the regular season. "It was one of those nights it seemed the puck was finding me around the net," said Burrows, who hadnt scored a goal in his first 35 games of the season. "I had aa lot of chances. wholesale jerseys. Honestly, I think I had four real good looks." Vancouver picked up its first road win since Jan. 21 in Edmonton and sits four points back of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Lack, meanwhile, rebounded after giving up six third-period goals in a 7-4 setback to the visiting New York Islanders on Monday and is likely to face Washington tonight for the first time. The Capitals are looking to put their own struggles behind them as they were just swept in a home-and-home set by the Pittsburgh Penguins. That gave the club five losses in its past six games and Washington sits three points out of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. After losing a 3-2 decision at home on Monday, the Capitals were blanked 2-0 in Pittsburgh the following night. JaroslavHalak made 32 saves, but the Penguins Marc-AndreFleury stopped all 32 shots he faced. "We were on our heels the whole first period, no question," said Capitals coach AdamOates. "We turned it over too many times -- probably a little hangover from (Monday) night." EvgenyKuznetsov failed to record a point in the two games, the first of his NHL career after signing an entry-level deal on Saturday. He was the 26th overall pick of the 2010 draft and the Russian-born forward had been playing in the Kontinental Hockey League. It has also been a rough few games for Caps forward AlexOvechkin, who leads the NHL with 44 goals but does not have a point in his past four games. He is a minus-4 over that span. Halak, acquired from the Buffalo Sabres before the trade deadline, started both games versus the Penguins and is 4-3-1 lifetime with a 2.12 goals against average versus the Canucks. Fellow Washington netminder BradenHoltby has never faced them. The Capitals have lost four straight and nine of their last 10 meetings with the Canucks, including a 3-2 setback in Vancouver on Oct. 26. The Canucks have won four of their last five trips to Washington and are eligible to have forward ZackKassian back in the lineup tonight. He finished serving a three-game suspension for a hit-from-behind versus Dallas last Thursday. ' ' ' |
