PARIS -- Finnish driver Heikki Kovalainen will replace Kimi Raikkonen for Lotus in the final two Formula One races of the season. Brandon Spikes Black Jersey . Raikkonen will miss the United States Grand Prix and Brazilian GP to undergo back surgery. He is joining Ferrari next season. The 32-year-old Kovalainen has raced in 109 GPs for Renault, McLaren and Caterham, securing one win at the Hungarian GP in 2008 and three other podium finishes. He has been a test driver for Caterham this year. "Jumping into a car so late in the year when you have not been competing in the races all season will be a challenge, but I know the team at Enstone well so I have no concerns about getting up to speed," Kovalainen said. "This is a great opportunity for me, so I would like to thank Tony Fernandes and Caterham F1 team for allowing me to take advantage of it." His appointment comes after seven-time champion Michael Schumacher turned down Lotus offer to drive in the final two races. "We had to move quickly following the news of Kimis non-participation in the final two races of this season, and we found ourselves facing a difficult decision," Lotus team principal Eric Boullier said. "On the one hand we had our reserve driver Davide Valsecchi -- who is a talented young driver that has shown a great deal of promise -- and on the other we had the opportunity to bring in a seasoned Formula 1 competitor." Before making his decision to have surgery, the 34-year-old Raikkonen had criticized the team for not paying his salary this season and threatened to pull out of the final two races in protest. He had to be persuaded to race in Abu Dhabi but skipped his media obligations on the Thursday before the race. He pulled out of the race on the first lap because of suspension damage after a minor collision. Before that, tensions had surfaced within the team at the Indian GP. Raikkonen was upset when he was ordered by the teams trackside operations director, Alan Permane, not to hold up teammate Romain Grosjean. Brandon Spikes Authentic Jersey . - Lengthy games dont bother TonySanchez. Leodis McKelvin Black Jersey . -- Scott Kosmachuk scored four times and added an assist as the Guelph Storm downed the visiting Ottawa 67s 7-3 on Sunday afternoon in Ontario Hockey League play.CLEVELAND -- Trevor Smith and Jerry DAmigo scored in the shootout as the Toronto Marlies edged the Lake Erie Monsters 4-3 on Wednesday in American Hockey League action. Smith had a power-play goal in the second period for Toronto (37-19-5), which tied the game 3-3 on Korbinian Holzers goal at the 17:30 mark of the third period. Josh Leivo also scored for the Marlies, while Garret Sparks made 30 saves and turned aside four skaters in the shootout to earn the win in net. C.J. Spiller Elite Jersey. Michael Schumacher, Stefan Elliott and Brett Clark supplied the offence for Lake Erie (26-28-7), while Calvin Pickard stopped 30 shots. Smiths power-play goal was the only score on Torontos three man advantages. The Monsters went 0 for 4 on the power play. The Marlies are on a five game point streak, having won four and lost once in the shootout. ' ' ' |

Canadian Adam Thibault is heading to the NFL Super Regional Combine in Detroit. Kellen Winslow Jersey . The Laval Rouge et Or defensive back/kick-returner gained the invitation following his showing Sunday at an NFL regional combine in Baltimore. Despite suffering a mild hamstring strain during the CFL combine March 23, Thibault posted a time of 3.93 seconds in the short shuttle in Baltimore. He also recorded a vertical jump of 38 inches. Thibault will be one of two Canadians at the NFL Super Regional Combine, which will be held April 12-13. David Foucault, an offensive lineman with the Montreal Carabins, was invited following an earlier NFL regional event in Florida. Mike Scifres Womens Jersey . 24 Baylor in a Big 12 clash between teams trending in opposite directions. Andrew Wiggins made 10-of-12 from the foul line and scored 17 for Kansas (14-4, 5-0 Big 12), which capped a stretch of four straight games against ranked opponents unscathed. Richard Marshall Chargers Jersey . The former Los Angeles Lakers forward has a two-month contract, the club said on Tuesday. Odom, an NBA free agent who hasnt played since finishing out last season with the Los Angeles Clippers, is filling a roster spot that opened up because of injury.NEW YORK -- When you have only 10 wins all season, every one is big. So dont ask the New York Islanders to rank them. Whether the moment struck them in the immediate aftermath of a 5-3 victory over the rival New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, the Islanders werent letting on. They were just happy to come away with a regulation win on Friday night. "I dont think we had won too many games overall," said forward MichaelGrabner, who scored two goals. "Weve got to work ourselves back into the playoff picture. Today was a good start, but tomorrow is another test." The Islanders (10-19-7) will host the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. New York is still a ways away from the playoff race, but it closed within seven points of the sliding Rangers (16-18-2). ThomasVanek snapped a tie with a power-play goal early in the third period for the Islanders, who earned their first regulation victory in over a month. Vanek scored during a two-man advantage at 1:18 of the third to give the Islanders their second win in 15 games and first in regulation since Nov. 12 against Nashville. They were 2-10-4 since then, including losses after regulation in their previous two. The one that really stung was a home defeat against Tampa Bay on Tuesday in which they blew a late 2-0 lead and were beaten in a shootout. "Weve lost some heartbreakers, there is no doubt about it," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "For them to come into this building, on this stage -- its a big win for us." CalClutterbuck scored a short-handed, penalty-shot goal, and Grabner added a short-handed tally in the first period. Defenceman BrianStrait scored in the second, and Grabner added an empty-netter with 50.3 seconds left for the Islanders, who scored as many as four goals for the first time in 15 games. "Its good. We scored more than two goals," Capuano said. "Its been a long time." EvgeniNabokov made 21 saves for the win. The Rangers got goals from BenoitPouliot, DerekDorsett and DerekStepan, but HenrikLundqvist stopped only 15 of 19 shots as New York fell to 1-4-2 on its team-record, nine-game homestand. "This was definitely a frustrating game. There is no question we beat ourselves," Lundqvist said. "We kept making some simple mistakes, and I was not there to clean it up." The Rangers tied it 2-2 just three minutes into the second when Dorsetts shot from the side boards hit Isllanders defenceman ThomasHickey in front and caromed in. Sean Lissemore Chargers Jersey. The Rangers then grabbed their first lead, but not before Grabner almost scored his second short-handed goal. His drive struck the crossbar. "I had a pretty good move, and I guess I put it a little too high," Grabner said. The Rangers then cashed in at the other end. RickNashs pass from the boards struck Hickey and caromed to Stepan for a quick shot that produced the power-play goal at 7:58. However, the Islanders responded with 8:34 left in the second on Straits first regular-season NHL goal, off a feed from JoshBailey. Prized prospect RyanStrome earned his first NHL point in his third game. The teams combined for three goals in a span of 2:57 late in the first period -- all during Rangers power plays, but only one scored by the home team. With Islanders teammate AndrewMacDonald off for high-sticking, Clutterbuck made it 1-0 when he scored on a questionable penalty shot. Clutterbuck was awarded the attempt after he got free for a breakaway with defenceman RyanMcDonagh chasing. McDonagh gave a light check with his stick, and that was enough for the penalty shot to be called -- much to the dismay of incredulous Rangers coach Alain Vigneault. "I just felt that I got a little tug," Clutterbuck said. "Obviously, it impeded me from making a play. Thats what the ref saw, I guess." Clutterbuck netted his fourth of the season when his shot eluded Lundqvists glove. The Rangers went on their third power play of the period 2:27 later, and again the Islanders took advantage. The puck got past McDonagh at the point, and the speedy Grabner took off alone. He cut from right-to-left and tucked the puck inside the left post with 2:51 left in the first. Grabner had gone 31 games without a goal since he netted two on opening night at New Jersey on Oct. 4. The Rangers got one back 30 seconds later on that power play when Pouliot scored from in-close off a pass from ChrisKreider. New York went 2 for 7 on the power play, allowing two goals in the process and failing to score on two opportunities in the games final 6-plus minutes. "When you outwork teams, you will find the bounces going your way," Nash said. "When you get outworked, thats when they seem to go against you." NOTES: Bailey had gone 12 games without a point. ... Rangers forward J.T.Miller was in the lineup after being recalled from Hartford (AHL) on Thursday. ' ' ' |

TORONTO -- Andrew Stein and Glenn Macaulay bought into the Blue Jays hype. David Bakhtiari Packers Jersey . Best friends since kindergarten and lifelong baseball fans, the pair were swept up in the promise of 2013 and purchased season tickets. From the top level of Rogers Centre above home plate they watched as Toronto slumped through the spring then came alive during an 11-game winning streak only to finish last in the AL East. Excitement isnt a word they used to describe their hopes for 2014. "I wouldnt say worried," said Stein. "Not optimistic," said Macaulay. "Yeah, not optimistic," said Stein. "Maybe slightly uneasy that its just going to be a repeat of last year." Stein and Macaulay were among the Blue Jays season ticket holders at Rogers Centre on Wednesday for the teams annual State of the Franchise event. Team president and CEO Paul Beeston, general manager Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons were on hand to take questions as jazz played throughout the stadium and food and drinks were handed out to fans wondering just what the state of the team is. Anthopoulos had no surprise announcements, nor was he worried about being grilled despite promises of change going unfulfilled during a quiet off-season. "When you dont have a good season you expect theres criticism that comes with that, that goes without saying, thats part of it," he said. "But again, these fans, I think its a different type of setting because these are the season-seat holders. They support the club. They love the team good and bad. Obviously were here to be accountable and to make ourselves available to talk and answer whatever questions they might have." Torontos only notable acquisition has been catcher DionerNavarro, who was brought on to replace J.P.Arencibia. Navarro, who hit .300 with13 home runs and 34 RBIs in 240 at-bats with the Chicago Cubs last season, barely made the splash that all-stars JoseReyes or R.A.Dickey did when Toronto traded for them prior to last season. "(Navarro will) be serviceable. Im not going to buy his jersey or anything," said Stein. The Blue Jays real need, the one Anthopoulos promised would be his winter focus, is starting pitching. Dickey, coming off a Cy Young season, struggled, although not as badly as JoshJohnson. J.A.Happ missed time after being hit in the head by a frightening comebacker in May, while BrandonMorrows season ended in July with a forearm injury. Only MarkBuehrle, who also had a slow start to the season, performed to expectation. Torontos rotation finished with a 4.81 earned-run average last season, second worst in the majors, and the starters 899.1 innings pitched were 28th in baseball. But Toronto has stood pat during the off-season. Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka was signed by the New York Yankees before veteran MattGarza joined the Milwaukee Brewers. Several pitchers such as ErvinSantana and UbaldoJimenez still remain on the market, but Anthopoulos said progress has been slowed by free agents who cost teams draft picks. That doesnt apply to the Blue Jays -- theyve got two protected first-round draft picks. But Anthopoulos remained non-committal. "We like some of the upside of the guys that are coming back. Wed still like to add," he said. "I think weve been very open about that. I dont know whats going to happen obviously between now and the start of camp. "Depending on how free agency goes or even the trade market, maybe its beyond that, but we are excited about some of the guys coming back, especially some of the young guys. Theres upside to the performance of a lot of these guys. But at the same time were still going to be active and try to get a starter." Whereas Anthopoulos could only ask fans to stick by the team, Gibbons said hes looking ahead after making peace with 2013. "After I was home for about two weeks I said, you know what, its time for a new season," said Gibbons. "Ive always been an optimistic guy. Its smart to look back and look at some areas to do things differently maybe to improve some things. But in the end youve got to turn the page and its a new start here in the next two months." Gibbons, who heard plenty of calls for his dismissal last season, isnt worried about the direction of the team. He acknowledged fans frustrations, and that there wont be as much good will in April as there was last year. "It sure would be nice me coming in here feeling good going to this thing having won something, but until you do that youre just hoping and dreaming. So hopefully we can do that." What, then, is the state of the Blue Jays? Ask again on Opening Day. Packers #17 Jersey . Johns a tough opponent, even if the Red Storm dont get a win to show for it. Nick Perry Packers Jersey . The Venezuelan driver leaves Williams after three years and will partner Romain Grosjean, who stays on at the English-based team for a third season. CHICAGO -- BryanHoladay saw an opening and took advantage. Holaday drove in AustinJackson with a two-out bunt single in the ninth, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. Holaday said he focused on White Sox third baseman MarcusSemien before going for the bunt hit against RonaldBelisario. "I noticed he was staring in and then he backed up and I thought I had a good chance to lay it down," the catcher said. Jackson bolted for home while Holaday beat the throw to first. Tigers manager BradAusmus said he was calling for the bunt, but he wasnt sure if the message ever got to Holaday. "I dont know if he heard us or saw it on his own and took advantage," Ausmus said. "(Holaday) is not a speed merchant but hes not slow. . Hes got the ability to beat it out." Jackson started the winning rally when he reached third on a one-out error by right fielder DayanViciedo. Belisario (1-3) pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Holaday, a late lineup addition, went 2 for 4. White Sox starter JoseQuintana struck out a season-high 10 in six innings, but received a no-decision for the third time this season. The left-hander allowed three runs and eight hits. JustinVerlander allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings for Detroit. It was the right-handers 176th quality start since 2006. The White Sox jumped ahead with three runs in the third. AdamEaton doubled home Semien and then scored on GordonBeckhams base hit. AdamDunn drove in Beckham with a two-out double to right. Detroit got one back on VictorMartinezs RBI single in the fourth, and then tied with two runs in Quintanas laast inning.Packers #94 Jersey. The Tigers collected four straight two-out hits. ToriiHunters RBI single scored MiguelCabrera and Jacksons base hit drove in Martinez. "He was doing pretty good, but you run into that part of the lineup, if youre not perfect, that can happen," White Sox manager RobinVentura said of Quintana. "With Cabrera, then you go to Victor, so unless youre on it and youre throwing it right where you want, that can happen, it can sneak up on you." Quintana struck out NickCastellanos to close his final inning. AlejandroDeAza tripled with one out in the seventh but was stranded when Verlander struck out Semien and Eaton. Verlander walked three and struck out four. "I was a little out of rhythm after six days off," he said. "After the third inning I kind of established a rhythm and got back to the way I should and have some quick innings." Tigers catcher Nick Avila was a late scratch with lower back spasms. He was replaced about 2 1/2 hours prior to the game by Holaday. NOTES: Ausmus said RHP AnibalSanchezs finger "looked good" and he is scheduled to do informal throwing Wednesday. Sanchez was placed on the disabled list April 27 with a laceration on his right middle finger, and that "rawness kind of seems to have gone away," Ausmus said. "Its just a matter now of building up the skin on the end of that finger where it can take the friction of a baseball coming off of it again." ... The Tigers entered Tuesday after two days off having played just 21 games - the fewest in baseball. ... White Sox left-hander ChrisSale, sidelined with a left flexor strain, remains unlikely to pitch into this weekend. ' ' ' |

NATAL, Brazil - Mixed martial arts legend Dan Henderson (30-11) added another chapter to his storied career with a stunning third-round finish of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (22-9). Saints #6 Jersey . The bout, a rematch of the pairs 2011 "Fight of the Year," served as the headliner of Sundays "UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson 2," which took place at Ginasio Nelio Dias in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Rua looked crisp in the early going, using a barrage of leg kicks and sharp jabs to keep Henderson at bay and even wobbled him on a few occasions through the first two rounds. But just when the 43-year-old Henderson looked to have nothing left in the tank, he shocked Rua with his patented power right hand, affectionately known to his fans as the "H Bomb." The shot landed flush, rearranging Ruas nose and sending him crashing to the canvas. Henderson followed to the floor, and the follow-up blows forced referee Herb Dean to call off the fight 91 seconds into the third round. The much-needed result snapped a three-fight losing streak for the man most consider the best mixed-martial-artist ever to hail from the U.S. "He definitely dinged me a little," Henderson admitted after the fight. "He rung my bell just a tad in the first round, also, and again in the second. I decided just to be patient. I wasnt very offensive, and that third round I think we both decided to get after it and leave things where we left them the first fight. "Im such a big fan of Shogun and what hes done for the sport and how he represents himself in the sport. So thank you for bringing the best out of me, as well." Along with the win, Henderson earned $100,000 in official UFC "Fight Night" bonuses for taking part in the "Fight of the Night" and being awarded one of the evenings "Performance of the Night" bonuses, as well. Rua also earned $50,000 for taking part in the "Fight of the Night." In the nights co-feature, C.B. Dollaway (14-5) turned in one of the best performances of his career, downing former "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" winner Cezar Ferreira (3-1) in just 39 seconds. Ferreira looked sharp on his feet early, landing with a power shot in the opening seconds. But Dollaway patently retreated to the fence and avoided follow-ups before unleashing a well-placed right hand that sent Ferreira tumbling to the canvas. Dollaway pounded with additional strikes, and referee Mario Yamasaki called off the fight in the opening minute. "I love fighting down here in Brazil," Dollaway said. "The fans show incredible passion, and it is awesome to see Im starting to develop a small fan base. "I knew if I stuck to my game plan, I could control the fight and finish him, and thats exactly what I did." A battle of lightweight winners of international versions of "The Ultimate Fighter" fell flat, as Norman Parke (19-2-1) and Leonardo Santos (12-3-1) fought to a majority draw. While the bout was lacking in action throughout most of the 15-minute affair, it was an odd point deduction from referee Wernei Cardoso that ultimately led to the draw. Cardoso penalized Parke one point for holding on to his opponents shorts as he looked for a takedown in the second round. The call was made just as Parke appeared to be holding the cage in defence of that takedown, but Cardosos decision was made. The result was recorded as a majority draw, 29-27, 28-28 and 28-28, with Santos taking the opening round and Parke the final two on two of the three judges cards. Light heavyweights Fabio Maldonado (21-6) and Gian Villante (11-5) combined for a thrilling three-round contest with an incredible shift in momentum. Villante took control of the action in the early going, utilizing his superior wrestling skills to secure the opening round. He landed a knee flush to Maldonados forehead in the second, opening up a cut that streamed for the remainder of the frame. But the wound only seemed to fuel Maldonado, who suddenly came alive with crisp combinations on the feet. Villante returned to his grappling attack but was too tired to earn a takedown, leaving him to endure Maldonados heavy hands for the remainder of the matchup. Maldonado nearly finished the fight in the final minute, but Villante refused to quit, surviving until the bell. Maldonado was awarded the hard-fought unanimous decision with scores of 29-27, 29-28 and 29-28. "It was a war standing up, but that was after he gave me a hard time on the ground," Maldonado said. "His wrestling is very good, so I knew I had to impose my striking game and avoid the fence. I knew that striking, hed get tired first." In a lightweight contest, Michel Prazeres (18-1) looked dominant in an impressive decision win over a heavily favored Mairbek Taisumov (21-5). Prazeres was in control of the fight from start to finish, with powerful strikes and a strong wrestling game. The contest was marred by a pair of point deductions, as Taisumov repeatedly grabbed the cage in hopes of preventing a takedown. But Prazeres didnt let the stoppage break his rhythm, as he cruised to a unanimous-decision win, 30-25 on all three judges cards. "I only have one thing to say: My team deserves a lot of praise," Prazeres said after the win. "The result speaks for itself. They did an amazing job." The nights first main-card matchup ended in controversy when Brazilian featherweight Rony Jason (14-4) dropped Steven Siler (23-12) with a pair of powerful hooks. While it appeared clear Siler was hurt, he also appeared to be defending as referee Wernei Cardoso stepped in to halt the fight just 77 seconds after it began. Unfortunately for a protesting Siler, the decision had already been made, and Jason was awarded a TKO win. "Im disappointed because it was an incredibly early stoppage by the ref," Siler said after the bout. "I didnt even have time to communicate I was OK because he jumped in so fast. "I got hit, dropped to my back to take a defensive posture and was throwing an upkick to give me some space. And then, all of the sudden, it was over." Brandin Cooks Saints Jersey . -- Kevin Harvick had a nice send-off with Richard Childress Racing, winning his penultimate race with the team at Phoenix International Raceway. Saints #64 Jersey . And they needed every bit of scoring they could muster. Malkin had a hat trick and the Penguins almost blew a four-goal lead before holding off the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 on Monday night to clinch their first-round playoff series in six games.(Sports Network) - The Edmonton Oilersare in the midst of playing 10 of 12 games on the road and will close out a three-game swing tonight against the San Jose Sharks. It dropped the opener of the trek by a 3-0 score at Calgary, then was doubled up by Phoenix in a 4-2 setback on Thursday. TaylorHall returned from injury to score a pair of goals and DevanDubnyk made 38 saves for the Oilers, who have lost three in a row on the road and fell to 5-9-1 as the guest this season. "We were not near as engaged as 18 skaters as we needed to be," said Oilers coach Tom Renney. Renneys club has just five wins in the last 17 games (5-11-1) and will return home for two games after their tilt with the Sharks. Edmonton will then hit the road again for a seven-game trek from Dec. 26-Jan. 7. Edmonton and San Jose are playing the first of four meetings this season. The Sharks won three of four matchups with the Oilers a year ago and have prevailed in nine of the previous 11 encounters with Edmonton. The Oilers ended a four-game road losing streak in this series with aa 5-2 victory on Jan. Saints #32 Jersey. 13, 2010. The Sharks got their six-game homestand off to a promising start and will try for back-to-back wins for the first time in almost a month when they entertain Edmonton tonight at HP Pavilion. The Sharks ended a three-game slide with a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday in the back end of a home-and-home set. BrentBurns, JoePavelski and LoganCouture scored in a 4:29 span of the third period, while RyaneClowe and MichalHandzus also scored for San Jose, which won for the third time in 10 tries (3-5-2) and improved to 9-6-1 at home this season. "I think we decided it was our turn to come back. It is a big win for us," Couture said. AnttiNiemi made 23 saves in a winning effort. The Sharks havent recorded two straight wins since a four-game run from Nov. 17-23 and are tied with Phoenix for second place in the Pacific Division. Dallas currently leads the division. San Jose will also welcome the Lightning, Kings, Ducks and Canucks to town on this current residency. ' ' ' |

ATLANTIC CITY, N. Morten Andersen Saints Jersey .J. -- Demitrius Conger had 22 points and 10 rebounds and St. Bonaventure advanced to the Atlantic 10 Conference championship game by holding off Massachusetts 84-80 on Saturday afternoon. Conference player of the year Andrew Nicholson of Mississauga, Ont., added 19 points for the fourth-seeded Bonnies (19-11), now one win from advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000. The Bonnies will face third-seeded Xavier for the championship and the automatic bid to the show on Sunday. The Musketeers (21-11) knocked off Saint Louis 71-64. Massachusetts (22-11) rallied from a 16-point deficit with 7:29 to play and had a chance to take the lead in the closing seconds, only to see Raphiael Putneys high-arcing 3-pointer hit off the side of the rim with less than 2 seconds to play. Matthew Wright hit two free throws to ice the game. Terrell Vinson had 20 for UMass, which knocked off top-seeded Temple on Friday. Pierre Thomas Saints Jersey . Most important, perhaps, it went off without a hitch. Organizers poked a little fun at the now-infamous opening ceremony gaffe that saw only four out of five snowflakes open up into rings, leaving the Olympics logo one ring short. Will Herring Saints Jersey . The overall big league average rose 5.4 per cent this season to a record $3.39 million, according to the annual report released Wednesday by the Major League Baseball Players Association. LOS ANGELES -- YasielPuig extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games with his third home run in four days, a go-ahead three-run shot, and drew a bases-loaded walk in the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 win over the Florida Marlins on Monday night. DanHaren (5-1) overcame a shaky start following his 3-2 loss at Washington last Wednesday, allowing three runs and seven hits over seven innings without walking a batter after losing his previous four decisions against the Marlins. The right-hander is 6-2 lifetime against Miami, the only other victory coming on a four-hit shutout in July 2009 with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Phoenix. BrianWilson inherited a 6-3 lead from Haren and promptly gave up a leadoff walk to ChristianYelich and a home run by pinch-hitter and former Dodger ReedJohnson on the next pitch. But KenleyJansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save, one day after he was charged with three runs in the 10th inning of a 7-4 loss to San Francisco. Yelich helped stake TomKoehler (3-3) to a 3-1 lead with a solo homer in the third, but the Marlins right-hander never made it through the fourth. He walked No. 8 hitter DrewButera, then DeeGordon with two outs, and Puig drove the next pitch into the pavilion seats in left-centre for his sixth home run to give Los Angeles a 4-3 lead. Koehler gave up four runs, six hits and five walks in 3 2-3 innings. In his previous two starts, he allowed no runs and five hits over 15 innings, beating the Dodgers 6-3 at Miami and following up with a no-decision against the New York Mets. Los Angeles added two more runs in the fifth, including an RBI single by AndreEthier after MattKemp was grazed on the helmet by HenryRodriguezs pitch and stole second on the right-handers next delivery to Ethier. Rodriguez also forced in a run with his bases-loaded walk to Puig. Kemp, playing in his 1,000th regular-season game, singled leading off the second inning and stolee second before Haren drove him in from third with a single that tied the score at 1. Khairi Fortt Saints Jersey. Yelich drove a 3-2 pitch to left-centre in the third for his fourth homer, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead. It was the first of four consecutive hits against Haren, including an RBI single by GiancarloStanton that extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games. But JarrodSaltalamacchia grounded into an inning-ending double-play. Haren allowed only one more hit after that -- a leadoff double in the sixth by Stanton. First base umpire Laz Diaz, who was admonished by Major League Baseball last week for his role in the ejections of New York Yankees manager JoeGirardi on May 5 against the Angels had a call of his overturned in the Marlins first inning. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly challenged Diazs ruling that Stanton was safe, after Haren took the toss from AdrianGonzalez on Stantons grounder and stepped on the bag a split-second before the runner did. Replays confirmed that Mattingly was correct, and Stanton had to settle for a run-scoring groundout, which helped increase his major league-leading RBIs total to 42. NOTES: Eighteen years ago this month, Marlins third base coach Brett Butler learned that he had tonsil cancer while playing for the Dodgers. This was his first visit to Chavez Ravine in a major league uniform since 2005, when he was the Diamondbacks first base coach. ... Dodgers 3B JuanUribe, who missed the previous three games because of a sore right hamstring, took batting practice with his teammates and was declared "available in different roles" by Mattingly. But he remained on the bench. ... Twelve of Puigs 26 big league homers have come on the first pitch. ... Kemp had a career-high 40 stolen bases in 2011 before injuries to his left hamstring and left ankle limited him to a combined 179 games in 2012 and 2013. This was only the second time he has two steals in a game since Aug. 11, 2012, at Miami. ' ' ' |

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterlings team of lawyers has hired four private investigation firms to dig up dirt on the NBAs former and current commissioners and its 29 other owners, said a person familiar with Sterlings legal strategy. Investigators were given a six-figure budget over the next 30 days to examine the leagues finances, allegations of previous discriminatory conduct and compensation to past Commissioner David Stern and current Commissioner Adam Silver, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday night on condition of anonymity. The person wasnt authorized to talk publicly. The person said the investigators also are looking into whether other owners made any off-colour jokes, or racist or sexist remarks. "The gloves are off, as they say," the person said. "Have them dig up all the dirt they can find." The 80-year-old Sterling is suing the NBA for $1 billion in federal court after the league tried to oust him as Clippers owner for making racist remarks to a girlfriend that were recorded and publicized. Silver fined him $2.5 million and banned him for life. The suit alleges the league violated Sterlings constitutional rights by relying on information from an "illegal" recording. It also said the league committed a breach of contract by fining Sterling and that it violated antitrust laws by trying to force a sale. Sterlings aattorneys also will be facing off with his wifes attorneys in probate court during a four-day hearing scheduled for July. Muhammad Wilkerson. The probate court hearing centres on whether Shelly Sterling had the right to unilaterally negotiate a $2 billion deal to sell the Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Shelly Sterlings attorney, Pierce ODonnell, said she made the deal as the sole administrator of The Sterling Family Trust, which owns the team, after two doctors determined her estranged husband was mentally "incapacitated." Donald Sterling is fighting that conclusion and her authority to sell. The person who spoke to the AP said Donald Sterling reluctantly agreed to hire private investigators after this weeks legal proceedings in probate court. The NBA submitted a legal filing Wednesday urging a judge to confirm Shelly Sterlings authority to sell the team. "He realized these guys will literally go to any low to get this sold," the person said. "Even if it gets (him) nothing other than exposing all these guys and shaking up the league and seeing a change in the leadership of the league, itll be worth it to him." The firms will be engaged in an "audition" of sorts, the individual said: "Whoever delivers the best (material) is going to stay on for the next round and it might be all four of them...29 owners is not a small undertaking." VOSS, Norway - Mikael Kingsbury says he grew up watching freestyle skiing legend Jean-Luc Brassard dominate the World Cup moguls circuit. Shane Vereen Jersey . It took Kingsbury just four seasons to raise the bar even higher. Kingsbury, from Deux-Montagnes, Que., made Canadian freestyle history Sunday when he won the mens dual moguls at a World Cup stop in Norway. His 21st career win on the circuit moved him past Brassard for most World Cup wins by a Canadian. "Jean-Luc is an amazing guy. Hes been an inspiration to me and to all mogul skiers in Canada," Kingsbury said. "Just to be in front of him is a big accomplishment for me. "I remember watching Jean-Luc in the World Cup when I was like seven years old, and now to pass him in victories ... hes been a role model for me in everything hes done, not only in skiing." Brassard, an Olympic champion and two-time world champion, collected his 20 World Cup victories over 11 years on the circuit. At just 21 years old, Kingsbury has the potential to eclipse his hero outside of the World Cup circuit as well. He already has a world title and an Olympic silver medal to his name. "Its an amazing feeling jut to be the best Canadian at 21 years old and the best for me is yet to come, Kingsbury said. Kingsburys gold highlighted another dominating overall performance for Canadas mogul skiers. Kingsbury beat teammate and rival Alex Bilodeau of Rosemere, Que., in the final. Bilodeaus silver gave him a 47th World Cup medal, tying Brassards record. And in the womens dual moguls, Olympic champion Justine Dufour-Lapointe of Montreal finished second, with sister Chloe taking the bronze. Maxime Dufour-Lapointe, the oldest of the three skiing sisters, finished fourth after losing to Chloe in the small final. American Hannah Kearney beat Justine Dufour-Lapointe in the final to take gold. Kearney leads Dufour-Lapointe by just five points in the overall standings heading into next weeks season finale in La Plagne, France. "Its kind of the best thing an athlete can have," Dufour-Lapointe said of her rivalry with Kearney. "It pulls you out to a next level that sometimes you dont think you can go to." Dufour-Lapointe said she felt nerves in qualifying, but put those behind her as the day progressed. "After the first (run) I felt way better and was able to charge myself and go a bit faster," she said. "I think that was my best dual against Hannah." Chloe Dufour-Lapointe goes into the final event in third place, 304 points behind Justine. She said shes not going to think about her overall ranking heading into La Plagne. "I just go for it, and I want to win the competition," she said. "Im not going to come for the points Im just going to go for the win." The mens standings also come down to the final event, with Kingsbury leading Bliodeau by 31 points in the battle for the Crystal Globe. "I know what to do to get it," Kingsbury said. "This is mine. I want it so bad its crazy." American Bradley Wilson defeated the Russian Alexandr Smyshlyaev in the mens small final to win bronze. Canadians Simon Pouliot-Cavanagh and Simon Lemieux were both beaten in the quarter-finals, while Philippe Marquis, Pascal-Olivier Gagne and Marc-Antoine Gagnon were eliminated in earlier rounds. In the womens event, Audrey Robichaud was eliminated in the fourth round while Christel Hamel finished 17th. WORCESTER, Mass. Michael Johnson Buccaneers Jersey . -- Carl Klingberg scored twice and Michael Hutchinson stopped 33 shots as the St. Johns IceCaps downed the host Worcester Sharks 5-1 on Friday in American Hockey League play. Kyle MacKinnon, Jason Jaffray and Blair Riley also scored for the IceCaps (30-19-4) while Jordan Hill and Zach Redmond each chipped in with two assists. Sena Acolatse for the Sharks (23-23-4), who dropped their fourth straight game. Worcesters Troy Grosenick allowed four goals on 21 shots before giving way to Harri Sateri, who stopped 9-of-10 shots in 32 minutes of relief. Klingberg scored twice in less than four minutes to put St. Johns ahead 2-0 heading into the first intermission. Jaffray made it 3-0 at 2:17 of the second. Acolatse put Worcester on the board less than a minute later. Riley and Makinnon, however, responded with goals 50 seconds apart to make it 5-1 IceCaps after 40 minutes of play. St. Johns went 0 for 4 on the power play while Worcester went 1 for 6. Austin Seferian-Jenkins Buccaneers Jersey . It lasted just 64 seconds before ZackSmith and the Senators retook the lead. BobbyRyan scored two goals and the Senators topped the Capitals 6-4. Buccaneers #93 Jersey . The deal, which comes after the 32-year-old Gooden had two consecutive 10-day contracts with Washington, was announced by the team Monday.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Rex Ryan is sticking with GenoSmith. The struggling rookie will remain the New York Jets starting quarterback for the teams game Sunday against the AFC East-rival Miami Dolphins. While the Jets are on the verge of a full-blown quarterback controversy as their playoff chances have taken a hit, Ryan isnt ready to make a change under centre just yet. "Right now," the coach said Monday, "I would feel he gives us the best chance to win." Smith hadnt been told of any decision while speaking in the locker room about an hour before Ryans news conference, but anticipated getting the start at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. "I fully intend to go about my week as I always do and have confidence in myself to be the starter and the leader of this offence," Smith said. "I will continue to study and work diligently as Ive always done." Ryan was noncommittal to starting Smith after the Jets 19-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, saying he wanted to watch the tape of the game before making any decisions. Smith was 9 of 22 for 127 yards and was intercepted twice and sacked three times. Over his last six games, Smith has thrown 10 interceptions and one touchdown pass. Against Baltimore, the Jets were 1 of 12 on third downs and finished with just 220 total yards. "The mistakes we made, theyre not on one person," Ryan said. "Offensively, as it always does, it seems like we talk about Geno all the time and that stats are out there for the public awareness, I guess. Here are the facts: He was 9 for 22, but it doesnt paint the whole picture. "Its certainly not on one guy." But some fans and media have called for inexperienced backup MattSimms to start for the Jets (5-6), who have lost two in a row and gone from controlling their playoff destiny to being way back in a pack of teams on the outside. "With Geno, sure, we have to get more production out of the quarterback position, I understand that," Ryan said. "Some of it, hes making the throws." Ryan explained the theory of a defence trying to force a quarterback into having to "throw out of a well," meaning that the pocket collapses so significantly that he has to just heave it straight up rather than being able to aim at targets consistently. Brandon Myers Buccaneers Jersey. That, Ryan said, has helped contribute to some of the poor play lately by Smith. "We have to protect better," right guard WillieColon said. "Hes forced to make some throws and a lot of things are coming at him. Up front, weve got to help him out, but were not." Ryan also pointed to receivers not running the right routes or dropping passes, and the defence not making plays to help out the offence. Still, there have been questionable decisions made by Smith throughout the season, befitting a rookie who is learning on the job. His 18 interceptions lead the NFL and his 62.1 quarterback rating is last among current starting quarterbacks. "I dont like to call them growing pains," said Smith, who acknowledged that this is his toughest stretch statistically at any level. "I dont make any excuses for anything. I fully expect myself, rookie or not, to go out there and perform. Theyre just mistakes that Ive got to correct." But is he running out of time -- and the team running out of patience? "I completely shut it out," Smith said of the calls for him to be benched. "One, you have to. And two, I always will because I know what it takes to win and what it takes to be a good quarterback, and it doesnt have anything to do with anything outside of this building. It takes preparation and hard work, so thats something Ill continue to do." Ryan insisted the Jets are closer than many people might think, but also implored his players to not listen to any of the negative comments being said or written about them outside the facility. "Weve got to stay together," defensive end MuhammadWilkerson said of Ryans message to the team. "People are going to try to break the team apart, try to point their fingers, but weve got to try to stay the course here and win these five games." NOTES: LB TroyDavis stayed overnight at a hospital in Baltimore after suffering a chest injury on a hit by the Ravens CourtneyUpshaw. Ryan hinted that he was unhappy about it being a hit on a "defenceless player." ... WR DavidNelson on whether the game against Miami feels like a must win: "Without being too dramatic, I definitely think so," he said. ' ' ' |

MINNEAPOLIS -- The boot on NikolaPekovics injured right ankle has been removed. Stephen Gostkowski Patriots Jersey . Theres no sign yet of his return to the Minnesota Timberwolves, though. Coach Rick Adelman said he had "no idea" when the team will have the 6-foot-11, 285-pound centre back in the lineup. Hes recovering from bursitis, which is inflammation around the joint. The Wolves have six games in the next nine days before the All-Star break, which will give Pekovic an opportunity for extra rest. Pekovic has sat out of the last three games, two of them losses. The 28-year-old Pekovic is averaging career highs in points, rebounds and minutes per game.Stevan Ridley Camo Jersey . Ranked 32nd in the world, Pospisil was due to play Frenchman Gael Monfils, but he withdrew with a wrist injury. Pospisil had the momentum going into the match against No. 52 Andujar, who got into the draw as a lucky loser, after making the semifinals last weekend in Basel. Stevan Ridley Pink Jersey . -- The Chicago Bulls didnt get a great night from their starters Wednesday.VICTORIA, BC On a windy afternoon at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, Vancouver Whitecaps FC came away with a 1-0 victory in their annual friendly match against the University of Victoria Vikes. The Vikes defended admirably for 90 minutes, led by a standout performance from goalkeeper Noah Pawlowski. However, continued pressure from Vancouver finally produced a goal in the dying seconds when Andre Lewis slotted home a fine cross from Omar Salgado. The Caps came out attacking from the get-go in front of 2,500 fans who braved the cold to watch the Blue and White come to town. The visitors had their first opportunity only three minutes into the match as Sam Adekugbe raced down the left flank and whipped a low cross into the box. Darren Mattocks got on the end of it, but could only manage to deflect it over the crossbar. Five minutes later the Blue and White were at it again. Russell Teibert got the ball on the left and lobbed in a ball to Hurtado who headed it towards net before it was cleared off the line. Teibert was the provider again on 14 minutes when he sent a cross to the back post. Sebastian Fernandez got a header on goal, but into the arms of Pawlowski. Seconds later, Nigel Reo-Coker darted through the middle and made a great pass to spring Mattocks on a breakaway before the Jamaicans low shot was well saved by Pawlowski. Looking for a first goal, Fernandez had a couple looks on net. First, on 24 minutes, the Uruguayan made a nice run before firing a strike at Pawloski. Then, on 31 minutes, Fernandez had a low shot from the top of the box that rolled wide of the net. Fernandez countryman had the next opportunity for the Caps, the best chance of the first half. After playing a ball to Mattocks, the Jamaican played a clever backheel to Nicolas Mezquida before his low shot was stopped by Pawlowski. Despite spending most of the first half in their own end, the Vikes had a chance of their own before the break. Craig Taylor hit a long shot that bounced just wide of David Ousteds net, leaving the teams level at 0-0 going into the second half. The Caps made one change at halftime with goalkeeper Marco Carduccii coming on to replace Ousted. Chandler Jones Elite Jersey. The next 45 minutes saw Whitecaps FC turn up the pressure. Hurtado got things going on 48 minutes when he intercepted a pass, only to have his strike saved by Pawlowski. The ensuing corner kick was headed hard by Jay DeMerit, straight into the hands of the Vikes keeper. Chances continued to come for the men wearing blue, with the Caps speed on full display on 56 minutes. Mattocks got the ball on a quick counter and darted down the middle before finding Erik Hurtado cutting from the right. Hurtado then hit a shot inches wide of the far post. On 62 minutes, head coach Carl Robinson made nine changes to his lineup, with only Nigel Reo-Coker staying on among the outfield players. With a fresh group on the field, the Caps would not relent. Midfielder Bryce Alderson was a notable force for the new group. His cutting pass on 76 minutes sent Salgado into the box before Pawlowski made a kick save. Three minutes later, Alderson danced by his defender on the left edge of the box and sent in a dangerous cross that was cleared by the Vikes. As time ticked to the final whistle, the Caps finally found the goal they were looking for. Salgado got the ball from Alderson on the left, teased his defender, then sent in a great cross to the back post which was promptly driven home by Lewis with only seconds remaining in the match. The late goal proved to be the winner for Whitecaps FC as they improve their record to 7W-1L-1D all-time against the Vikes. "Im glad it was a close game, because if wed scored early on maybe we would have taken our foot off the gas and I wanted a good tempo game, I wanted them to do the right things," said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson after the match. "On another day we might have scored eight or 10 goals. Obviously we need to work on our finishing a little bit more, but Im very pleased with the way we played and built up." The Caps return to Vancouver to train over the course of the next week before departing for Portland, Oregon on Friday where they will take part in the Rose City Invitational tournament. ' ' ' |

MILWAUKEE -- The Atlanta Hawks got a confidence boost before the playoffs. Dwight Freeney Chargers Jersey . The Milwaukee Bucks found out they were being sold. It turned out to be a big night for two teams headed in different directions with the regular season coming to a close. MikeScott scored 17 points to lead Atlanta in a 111-103 win Wednesday, hours after Milwaukee owner Herb Kohl announced he was selling his team. MikeMuscala added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Hawks, who rallied from a 12-point deficit in the first half. "I think the defence after the first quarter really picked up. It was where we want it to be and need it to be," coach Mike Budenholzer said. Atlanta is locked into the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and a first-round date with the Indiana Pacers. Scott started for forward PaulMillsap, who was rested to get ready for the post-season. "We feel like we are playing about as well as we have played all year for the most part. So the regular season is done, we will take a couple days and get ready for Indiana," forward KyleKorver said. BrandonKnight scored 31 points to lead the Bucks, who finished an NBA-worst 15-67. Their dismal season is over, though there is more certainty about the teams future after the prospective new owners said they wanted to build a new arena in Milwaukee. Kohl came into the locker room and addressed the team before the game. Coach Larry Drew thinks his team may have been a little distracted, on top of playing the last game of the year. "I would like to think that the concentration was there, but I think I would be lying if I said it was," he said. "This was a big day with all that has happened." The NBA is expected to approve the estimated $550 million sale to New York investment firm executives Marc Lasry and Wesley Edens, who also committed $100 million toward a new arena to replace the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Kohl, a former U.S. senator, also promised to fork over $100 million for a new facility. Wearing a dark green suit to match the Bucks dominant team colour, Kohl received a standing ovation and watched about four rows from the floor at centre court as his team went out and scored 39 points in the first quarter, a season-high for the opening period. But Atlanta took control in the second half, even if the team didnt have much at stake. The top goal was to stay sharp but injury-free, and Budenholzer limited the minutes for key players Korver, DeMarreCarroll and JeffTeague on top of having Millsap sit out. The contest had the up-and-down feel of a playground pickup game at times, especially during a first half in which the Bucks shot 63 per cent to the Hawks 60. Atlanta trailed by as much as 12 in the first half before going up by double digits in the fourth quarter. "We just wanted to end the season playing good basketball," Korver said. Atlantas second unit seemed to have more energy down the stretch in pulling past the Bucks. At one point, RamonSessions had his pass deflected in the backcourt and bounce past teammate JeffAdrien, who momentarily froze. It was enough time for CartierMartin to track down the loose ball and coast in for an uncontested layup during a 15-4 run that helped Hawks take a 97-87 lead with 6:54 left. Another second half during which the Bucks ran out of steam -- a season-long issue. "We had some rough nights. This is a humbling experience," said forward JohnHenson, who had 19 points. "I think for me and everybody on this team, Im pretty sure nobody imagined this could have happened." KhrisMiddleton finished with 16 points and seven rebounds for Milwaukee. Six players scored in double figures for the Hawks. NOTES: The Hawks entered Wednesday having won six straight against the Bucks. ... Teague finished with 11 points, extending his career-best streak of scoring in double figures to 12 straight games. ... Atlanta has reached the playoffs for seven straight years, the longest active streak in the East. ... Drew was the Hawks head coach from 2010-13. ... Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry, In the closing minutes of the second period of Game 4 between Pittsburgh and Columbus there were the remnants of two broken sticks behind the Pittsburgh net. The official in that zone didnt pick up any of the pieces even when the play went deep in the Columbus end. I know he has other responsibilities, but it would only take a couple seconds to gather the sticks up and remove them from play. Ive seen other times where a ref does pick up a broken stick while the game is still in play and dumps it to the nearest players bench. So why do broken sticks sometimes get picked up but not other times? Personal choice or something else going on? Louis Frlan III Louis:You are correct in your assertion that the ref has other (more important) responsibilities with play in progress; particularly to watch for the presence of a penalty infraction; which by the way I would like to see called more consistently! If any debris (broken stick) or lost equipment (glove, helmet) can be easily accessed, most refs will pick up the obstacle(s) and discard them or return them to the players bench or penalty box as they pass by in the normal flow of action. I did this whenever I was able to do it "safely". An objective of every referee is to sustain game flow. In picking up debris I applied referee rule No. 1 - common sense and foresight! From a safety issue there is potential (no matter how slight) for a player to step on a broken stick and crash into the boards or fall awkwardly thereby sustaining a needless injury. With an eye toward the potential for bad things to happen, I was always concerned that a player would shoot a broken stick in the direction of the puck or puck carrier which could result in an interference infraction or the assessment of a penalty shot. I could prevent any opportunity for these things to occur by picking up the debris with a quick swoop whenever the play dictated. The refs are cautioned about being distracted through picking up broken sticks that could result in missing something elsewhere. For this reaason some refs just arent comfortable veering their focus away from the play.Keenan Allen Jersey. . I can appreciate that fact and it is their personal choice, Louis. The debris behind and around the Penguins net on this play however was an accident waiting to happen. Play continued for one minute and 30 seconds after BrooksOrpiks stick was slashed hard by RJ Umberger and broken in half below the goal line at the side of the net which allowed Columbus to gain puck possession (no penalty call but deserved). On the other side of the net the remnants of SidneyCrosbys broken stick eventually provided additional obstacles for players to maneuver around. The Blue Jackets applied puck pressure for 10 seconds before the Pens safely dumped the puck into the Columbus end zone. This would have been a prime opportunity for the referee on the Pittsburgh goal line to safely swoop in and collect the trash. Until the play was finally stopped when the same referee called a tripping penalty to MattNiskanen, the Penguins had sustained puck possession throughout the neutral zone and into the Blue Jackets end for extended periods. Another primary missed opportunity for the ref to play pick up the sticks took place when a Blue Jackets dump-in was retrieved by Niskanen. Matt set up behind the Pens goal and led an uncontested breakout after contacting one broken shaft with his skate and avoiding the others as he carried the puck out of Jackets end zone. The ref could have easily followed behind Niskanen, bent down while looking at the play with his head up and quickly gathered the sticks but obviously wasnt comfortable in doing so. Twenty seconds later the Blue Jackets attacked and play forced the referee to skate backwards behind the Penguins net. The ref maneuvered through the obstacle field bumping into and stepping over portions of broken sticks, as did the players, until Niskanen tripped BrandonDubinsky to stop play. While it makes good sense for a referee not to forsake his primary duties by going out of his way to become a trash collector, I believe that "common sense" should be applied to remove obstacles when the opportunity is safely presented. CHARLOTTE, N. Antwan Barnes .C. -- The Panthers have finally given up on ArmantiEdwards, waiving the fourth-year wide receiver. The team announced the move Tuesday. Former Panthers general manager Marty Hurney drafted the Appalachian State quarterback in the third round in 2010, giving up a second-round pick in 2011 to New England to get him. The move has proven to be one of the most costly in franchise history. Although Edwards was a favourite among local Mountaineer alum, he never made the transition to wide receiver at the NFL level. Edwards had five career receptions for 121 yards and averaged 7 yards per punt return. The Panthers havent filled his roster spot. Carolina signed wide receiver ToneyClemons to the practice squad and terminated wide receiver CordellRoberson from the practice squad. Chris Ivory . - Canadian Augusta James, American Liz Breed, Mexicos Gabriela Lopez and Australias Su-Hyun Oh all fired 4-under 67s to share top spot on the leaderboard on Tuesday after the opening round of the Canadian womens amateur championship. Wesley Walker . -- A judge has rejected a motion to dismiss charges against AaronHernandez stemming from the 2013 slaying of a Boston man whose body was found near Hernandezs home.NASHVILLE -- James Franklin appears to have a decision to make. Stay at Vanderbilt or take over as coach at Penn State. Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams said Thursday night he exchanged text messages with his football coach and Franklin "basically said that he is our coach. He hasnt made a decision." Williams would not confirm Franklin has an offer from Penn State, but has indicated Nittany Lions officials have been in contact with the coach. CBS.com was first among several media outlets to report Franklin is expected to be Penn States replacement for Bill OBrien, who left for the Houston Texans. "He just wanted me to know that the things that are being said that he has made a decision to leave are not true," Williams said Penn State had no official comment, but the university did announce Thursday night that a new compensation committee is scheduled to meet Saturday morning in a closed session to discuss a contract for someone not yet being identified by the school. The school also said there will be a brief public session Saturday morning. Earlier in the day Williams said Franklin had called "to let me know the reports that he had accepted another job were inaccurate. And I didnt ask anything more than that nor did he volunteer anything more than that." Williams said he met with Franklin on Tuesday night and spoke with him Wednesday, too. Penn State interim coach Larry Johnson said Thursday night he hasnt been told anything about his future. "Im still the interim coach until a new coach is named," Johnson said. "As of right now, Im continuing to do my part." Vanderbilt had only one winning season since 1982 before Williamms hired Franklin in December 2010. DBrickashaw Ferguson. The Commodores also had only four bowl berths before Franklin arrived, and he now has taken them to three straight bowls. The 41-year-old Pennsylvania native is 24-15 in his three seasons as Vanderbilts head coach, matching Dan McGugin for the most wins in school history over a coachs first three seasons. The Commodores are 16-4 over the past 20 games, second in the SEC only to Alabama. Vanderbilt won the final seven games of 2012 and the final five of 2013 in a stretch that also includes back-to-back bowl wins. Vanderbilt has gone 9-4 and finished in the final Associated Press rankings each of the past two seasons, including No. 24 in the poll released Tuesday. Vanderbilt hadnt finished in the final AP poll before Franklin arrived since 1948 under Red Sanders. Franklin was given a contract extension in December 2012 designed to keep him at Vanderbilt for years to come. Asked if Vanderbilt has worked to restructure Franklins deal since the Commodores beat Houston in the BBVA Compass Bowl on Jan. 4, Williams said they have an ongoing process to remain competitive. "We think that we had a good season and a successful season, and we constantly reward people for that," Williams said. OBrien guided the Nittany Lions through two seasons of severe NCAA sanctions after taking over for the late Joe Paterno and went 17-9. Miamis Al Golden drew interest from Penn State during this search, though he stated Saturday he intended to stay with the school. Former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak, a former Penn State offensive lineman, and 49ers offensive co-ordinator Greg Roman also have reportedly gotten a look from Penn State. ' ' ' |

Kerber was the only player to beat Williams last year - in Cincinnati - after the Americans first-round ouster at the French Open. OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Clippers made a silent protest against owner Donald Sterling before Game 4 of their Western Conference playoff series against Golden State. The Warriors made a different kind of statement during the game. And just like that, a series pulled into a race-related scandal took another twist. StephenCurry made a career playoff-high seven 3-pointers and scored 33 points, leading the Warriors past the Clippers 118-97 on Sunday to even their first-round series at two games apiece. "We wanted to come out and focus on all the work weve put in over the summer, throughout the course of the season to get ready for this moment in the playoffs and just have fun and enjoy it -- not let one person ruin it for everybody," Curry said. The game almost became an afterthought -- until tipoff anyway -- after an audio recording was posted Saturday online by TMZ purportedly of Sterling making comments urging a woman to not bring black people to his teams games. The alleged comments, which are under investigation by the NBA, have set off reactions of anger and calls for action through the league. Clippers players made a silent protest against Sterling by shedding their warm-up jerseys and going through the pregame routine with their red shirts on inside out. They also wore black bands on their wrists or arms and black socks in a show of solidarity. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said he knew what his players had planned but didnt voice his opinion. He said he wasnt thrilled about the demonstration, though he didnt elaborate why. Curry and company did a better job focusing from the start. The All-Star guard made his first five 3s to give Golden State a 20-point lead in the first quarter that held up most of the way. Curry shot 10 for 20 from the floor, including 7 of 14 from beyond the arc, and had seven assists and seven rebounds to help the Warriors snap a two-game losing skid. "I just thought they were the tougher team and it wasnt even close. Should have been a first round knockout," Rivers said. Golden State outshot Los Angeles 55.4 to 42.9 per cent. The Clippers had 19 turnovers, while the Warriors had a series-low 15 turnovers. Both coaches and players agreed that Sterlings purported comments affected their preparation, and neither side believed it was a determining factor in the outcome. "I think both teams were somewhat bothered by what has taken place the last 24 hours," Warriors coach MarkJackson said. "But my guys just played with great energy, great effort." Rivers blamed himself for not getting his players ready. "Im not going to deny that we had other stuff," he said. "I just believe when the game starts, the gamme starts and nobody cares anymore. wholesale jerseys. Golden State surely didnt care." Game 5 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles. AndreIguodala added 22 points and nine assists, and DavidLee, KlayThompson and HarrisonBarnes each scored 15 as the Warriors went to a smaller lineup to regain their shooting touch in front of a roaring, gold-shirt wearing sellout crowd of 19,596 that stood after every swish. "It just all came together," said Iguodala, who also had nine assists and four rebounds. JamalCrawford scored 26 points, and BlakeGriffin had 21 points and six rebounds for a Clippers team wrapped up in the most talked-about topic in sports. "Maybe our focus wasnt in the right place would be the easiest way to say it," Clippers guard J.J.Redick said. New NBA Commissioner Adam Silver attended the game and met privately with former All-Star guard and current Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, who is advising the players union on the Sterling situation. Johnson even held a news conference during halftime that spilled well into the third quarter. Silver has said he hopes for a quick resolution after the league investigates, and that Sterling has already agreed not to attend Game 5. Johnson said the players trust Silver and are hoping for a quick resolution -- and the harshest penalty possible if the audio recording is authenticated. Once the ball was thrown up and the crowd roared, the Warriors quickly put the Clippers in a hole they could never recover from. Currys five 3-pointers in the first quarter tied a franchise-playoff record for a quarter, matching a mark he and Thompson set last year. Golden State led by 20 in the first quarter, 23 in the second quarter and 66-48 at the half. Jackson used a smaller lineup -- with power forward DavidLee playing centre for long stretches instead of JermaineONeal, whom Jackson said requested the switch -- to spread the floor more than he had at any point in the series, which big man AndrewBogut has missed with a fractured right rib. The Clippers never closed within single digits at any point in the second half. Curry kept on shooting -- and kept on hitting -- to send the series back to Los Angeles tied. And with so many in an uproar over Sterlings purported comments, theres no telling what the scene will be like at Staples Center. "Were going home now, and usually that would mean were going to our safe haven," Rivers said. "And I dont even know if thats true." NOTES: The Warriors have won 16 of their past 19 home games against the Clippers. ... Sterlings wife, Rochelle "Shelley" Sterling, sat in a courtside seat across from the Clippers bench. ' ' ' |

S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands -- Third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain emerged victorious from a marathon day at the grass-court Topshelf Open, advancing to the final with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Juergen Melzer of Austria. Chris Scott Panthers Jersey . Both players played twice Friday, finishing quarterfinals that had been suspended because of rain and darkness. Bautista Agut will play for his second ATP title after losing to Janko Tipsarevic in Chennai in 2013. He faces Benjamin Becker of Germany in the final. Becker, the 2009 tournament champion, served up 13 aces and beat Joao Sousa 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the other mens semifinal. "I like to play on grass and I dont know why but I often play my best tennis at this tournament," Becker was quoted saying on the ATPs website. The 8th-seeded Melzer broke Bautista Aguts service game to open the match and coasted through the first set. But in the second set it was Bautista Aguts turn to dominate the rallies. In the decider Bautista Agut surrendered his serve in the fourth game and threw his racket to the grass in disgust. After regrouping, he broke Melzer back in the following game, and went on to take the tiebreaker. In the womens tournament, Zheng Jie of China reached her first WTA final in 2 1/2 years when she beat Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-3. Zheng won in her last final appearance in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2012, for her fourth career title. She broke Rybarikova six times, and will meet qualifier Coco Vandeweghe of the United States in the final. Vandeweghe beat 2005 champion Klara Koukalova 6-4, 6-2 with nine aces. The American has a 1-1 record against Zheng and will play in only her second final, looking for her maiden title. Earlier Friday in the mens quarterfinals suspended overnight because of rain, Bautista Agut ended the title defence of seventh-seeded Nicolas Mahut of France 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Melzer outlasted second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Their match had been suspended at one set all, and Melzer prevailed 7-6 (3), 6-7 (6), 7-6 (9) after more than three hours. Despite losing the semifinal, the outing was Melzers best result since he returned to the tour in mid-April from a seven-month layoff for a shoulder injury. Pathers #34 Jersey .7 seconds to play, and the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Dallas Mavericks 94-92 in a preseason game Monday night. AnthonyDavis paced New Orleans (2-0) with 25 points and seven rebounds. Charles Godfrey Panthers Jersey . "Theyve both been real good," said Babcock. "Havent changed our minds." A decision has seemingly been made- Sundays Group B-deciding tilt against Finland ahead- but it could not have been an easy one. Price opened the tournament with a sturdy 19-save performance against the Norwegians, yielding just one goal.MINNEAPOLIS -- The Memphis Grizzlies are making a move in the Western Conference and are doing it on the road. ZachRandolph had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Memphis overcame another strong effort by KevinLove to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-90 Friday night. CourtneyLee added 16 points for the Grizzlies, who have won five straight games and 10 of their last 11. Memphis has won six straight away from home, including a sweep of a three-game trip to Portland, Sacramento and Minnesota. "It feels good, we are still getting to where we want to get," Randolph said. One-half game behind Dallas for eighth place in the Western Conference, the Grizzlies are 13-7 on the road and 12-13 at home. "This is huge for us, especially for the goals we have as far as making that playoff push," Lee said. "It definitely builds momentum." The win could be costly because Memphis played the final 6:37 without starting guard MikeConley, who sprained his right ankle when he landed on J.J. Bareas foot. Conley had 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting after scoring a combined 46 in his last two outings. He is to be re-evaluated Saturday. "I can put weight on it now," Conley said. "Tomorrow is looking iffy, but hopefully after some treatment tonight and the next day we will go from there." Memphis hosts Milwaukee Saturday. Playing on a sore left ankle throughout the second half, Love led Minnesota with 28 points and 16 rebounds. KevinMartin had 14 points for the Timberwolves, who lost for just the second time in seven games. "We had our chances in the end and had some really, really great looks. We just didnt convert," Love said. Randolph did. He scored six points during a 9-2 Memphis run that turned a one-point deficit into a 91-85 lead with 59.6 seconds to play and later added two free throws. "Hes the man, hes the go-to player. Hes a proud man, hes an extremely competitive man," said Memphis coach David Joerger. "Think of all the banging those guys take night in and night out, year in and year out. When he got down there and got it done going 11 of 20 with some offensive rebounds, makes big free throws. Im really proud of him, really happy." With Minnesota trailing by one, Love scoreed on a fadeaway jumper and on a layup after a feed from Barea for an 83-80 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Pathers #20 Jersey. Love hurt his left ankle when he collided with MarcGasol on a drive with 2 minutes to play in the first half and landed on the foot of another Memphis player, yet gutted it out until halftime. "When I was moving it felt fine and I continued to keep it moving," Love said. "But right now it doesnt feel so good. We just need to do all we can before tomorrow night and hopefully be ready to go." Minnesota is at Atlanta on Saturday. Loves gimping was gone to start the second half much to the dismay of Memphis. With the Timberwolves trailing 59-43 early in the third quarter, Love scored 14 points during an 18-4 run to get them within two. His jumper with 12.8 seconds left in the quarter gave Minnesota its first lead of the game at 67-66. Love outscored the Grizzlies 18-16 in the frame. RickyRubio helped lead the comeback in the third with six assists, but did not get off the bench in the fourth as coach Rick Adelman thought Barea "was the best option for us to win." Rubio finished with six points on 2-of-7 shooting. "Its coachs decision and I respect it. He always does what he thinks is best for the team. Of course I wish I could play, but I respect my teammates and my coaches and what he decides," Rubio said. Early on, Memphis took advantage of Minnesota playing its second straight game without bruising centre NikolaPekovic, who is out indefinitely with bursitis in his right ankle. Memphis had 36 points in the paint in the first half, and finished with 56. Gasol and Lee each had nine points in the first quarter as the Grizzlies shot 63.6 per cent from the field, and had 22 points in the paint in building a 30-22 lead. A putback by Randolph and a two-handed dunk by EdDavis off a Minnesota turnover increased Memphis lead to 42-28 midway through the second quarter. NOTES: Minnesotas 37 first-half points were a season low. ... Memphis F MikeMiller, who was questionable after spraining his right thumb Wednesday, finished with five points. ... Minnesotas GorguiDieng blocked Davis twice in a 58-second span early in second. ... Joerger grew up in Staples, Minn. ' ' ' |
