PITTSBURGH -- For his first start with the Pirates, EdinsonVolquez beat AdamWainwright. Tim Masthay Packers Jersey . Thatll do nicely as an early return on that off-season contract he signed with the Pirates. TonySanchez hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Sunday. Singed to a one-year, $5 million contract as a free agent in December, Volquez was sharp in his first start for the Pirates as he gave up one run and three hits in 5 2-3 innings with one walk and four strikeouts. That came after Volquez pitched two scoreless innings of relief Thursday against the Chicago Cubs. "What you saw was fastball command with downhill angle, big-time spin and tilt on the breaking ball, a good changeup and getting ahead with good pitches," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He pitched a gem." Volquez got a standing ovation when he walked off the mound. "I think I did a great job and the fans appreciated what I did," Volquez said. "I just wanted to keep making another good pitch, keep the ball down and get them to hit the ball on the ground. All my pitches were there." Sanchezs double to deep centre field with two outs came off Wainwright (1-1) and snapped a 1-1 tie. "Im still nervous playing up here," Sanchez said. "My heart is racing. My head is spinning. It feels like the game is going 1,000 mph. So, its nice to be able to get some big hits." The hit by the rookie reserve catcher scored PedroAlvarez, who led off the inning with a walk, and was Sanchezs second winning hit of the week as he singled home the winning run in the 16th inning of Wednesday nights victory over the Chicago Cubs. "I cant let what happen in the seventh inning happen, especially in a close game, a rivalry game like this," Wainwright said. "I walked the leadoff man then left a ball out over the plate with two outs and Sanchez took a good swing at it. You cant do that." TonyWatson (1-0) retired all four batters he faced, striking out three, and ran his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 24, dating to last season. JasonGrilli pitched a scoreless ninth to convert his first save. St. Louis managed just three hits. Volquezs 5.71 ERA last season with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers was the highest among the 81 pitchers who qualified for the ERA title. He also allowed 15 runs in 13 innings in exhibition games this spring. Wainwright went seven innings and allowed two runs and five hits after pitching seven scoreless innings in his first start of the season at Cincinnati in Mondays opener. He struck out seven and walked two. The Pirates opened the scoring in the fourth inning when AndrewMcCutchen doubled with one out and scored on NeilWalkers two-out double. An RBI triple by the Cardinals JonJay in the sixth tied the score at 1-1 and chased Volquez. NOTES: St. Louis CF PeterBourjos, who is off to a 0-for-13 start with his new team, got the day off. Jay started in his place. The Cardinals acquired Bourjos from the Los Angeles Angels in an off-season trade. ... RHP JamesonTaillon, Pittsburghs top pitching prospect, will undergo Tommy John surgery by David Altcheck in New York and hell miss 12 to 18 months. ... The Cardinals play their home opener Monday against the Cincinnati Reds with RHP MichaelWacha (0-0, 0.00) facing LHP TonyCingrani (0-0, 0.00). ... The Pirates are off Monday then open a three-game series Tuesday night at Chicago with RHP CharlieMorton (0-0, 0.00) pitching against Cubs RHP EdwinJackson (0-0, 1.29). Scott Tolzien Packers Jersey . -- Ricky Foley believes he made the right decision last year to leave the B. Packers #92 Jersey . Bouchard, who grabbed the tennis worlds attention at last months Grand Slam, will be joined in the best-of-five series by Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa, Sharon Fichman of Toronto and Aleksandra Wozniak, of Blainville, Que.NEW YORK -- JamalCrawford was back in the locker room throwing up, a tough way to start a lengthy road trip. A little illness wasnt going to stop the Los Angeles Clippers. Neither is a grueling schedule nor the absence of their All-Star point guard. "For us, theres no excuses," Crawford said. "We have to go on the road and do a job." BlakeGriffin scored 32 points, Crawford added 29, and the Clippers opened a seven-game road trip with their fifth straight victory, 109-95 over the New York Knicks on Friday night. DeAndreJordan had 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Clippers, who dominated the second half to hand the Knicks their third consecutive loss. CarmeloAnthony had 26 points and 20 rebounds for the Knicks in a disappointing start to an eight-game homestand that matches the longest in franchise history. That doesnt guarantee any success this season, with the Knicks now 7-13 at Madison Square Garden. "It seems that we cant figure it out here on our home court," Anthony said. "But despite these last couple of games, I think weve got a great stretch that can work in our favour if we get some things right, adjust some things and figure it out quickly." One of those adjustments could be to the starting lineup, with coach Mike Woodson said he may have to consider it after starting guards RaymondFelton and ImanShumpert combined for two baskets and five points -- all by Felton -- on 12 shot attempts. Anthony shot only 4 of 23 from the field, but made all 16 free throws in the first 20-20 game by a Knicks player since DavidLee on April 2, 2010. J.R.Smith added 24 points off the bench. Its the second seven-game trip of the season for the Clippers, who will fly about 11,275 miles as they give up Staples Center for the Grammy awards. They went 4-3 in December on the first one, and got this one off to a winning start while improving to 10-10 on the road this season. Crawford couldnt even join them for warmups, remaining in the back with stomach sickness. But after needing a stunning rally to erase a 17-point deficit inside the final 5 minutes and beat Dallas 129-127 on Wednesday, the Clippers methodically pulled away from a 50-all halftimme tie in this one and improve to 6-1 this season without the injured ChrisPaul. Packers #67 Jersey. "Something CP always says when we are on a road trip, Cant win them all without winning the first," Griffin said. "So to get the first one for us is obviously great, to get the win to start the road trip and help our mindsets for the rest of the games." The Knicks led 65-62 with 4 minutes left in the third before helping the Clippers pass them by continuously sending the visitors to the line. Ten of the Clippers final 14 points of the quarter came from the foul line -- one of them when Griffin was fouled throwing down an alley-oop pass from Crawford with 52 seconds left. Los Angeles then blew it open early in the fourth on consecutive jumpers by newly signed HedoTurkoglu and Crawford, before Crawford nailed a 3-pointer to make it 85-70. Consecutive 3s later in the period by Griffin, JaredDudley and Crawford, a former Knicks guard, extended it to 96-75 and brought out plenty of boos from the home fans. With the Knicks at home for the rest of the month, Woodson said he considers January the pivotal month of the season. Yet home hasnt been the place to be, with the Knicks absorbing their three worst losses here. And they could play this entire stretch without forwards Amare Stoudemire and KenyonMartin. Both players sprained their left ankles in Thursdays 117-89 loss at Indiana and are expected to miss about two weeks. The homestand still includes visits from sub-.500 Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Charlotte, the Lakers, Boston and Cleveland, but the Knicks cant assume wins against anyone after falling to 15-25. "The thing that we have to do is just, we have to fix it," centre TysonChandler said. "Youve got to attack the problem head on. Theres going to be no pity parties. Just got to take care of it and fix it." The Clippers tied it at 50 going into halftime despite shooting under 33 per cent and going 3 of 18 on 3-pointers. Anthony was 2 of 10, but made all nine free throws for his 14 points. NOTES: The Knicks also had an eight-game homestand in December 1986. The Dallas Mavericks are the only other team with eight straight home games this season. ' ' ' |

MADRID - The Spanish leagues disciplinary committee has fined Villarreal 12,000 euros ($16,000) for a fan racially taunting Dani Alves by throwing a banana at him.Damian Williams Jersey . The incident happened during Barcelonas 3-2 win at Villarreal on April 27th when Alves, who is black, picked up the banana thrown by 26-year-old David Campayo Lleo, bit off a piece and then discarded it. Alves actions led to social media support from fellow players, celebrities and politicians who posed for photos with bananas. Caleb Sturgis Womens Jersey . The 19-year-old Rupert played for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League this season, putting up 21 goals, 52 assists, 54 penalty minutes and a plus-36 rating in 68 regular-season games. Jarvis Landry Dolphins Jersey . With Bayern playing the Club World Cup final in Morocco, Leverkusen and Dortmund could have gained some ground on the undefeated leader. But Leverkusen went down 1-0 at Werder Bremen and Dortmund lost 2-1 at home to Hertha Berlin, leaving Bayern seven points ahead of Leverkusen and 12 ahead of Dortmund, with one match in hand. BALTIMORE -- The injuries keep mounting for the New York Yankees. So do the victories. BrendanRyan scored the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch by JimJohnson, and New York defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 Thursday night after blowing a four-run lead. MarkReynolds and CurtisGranderson homered for the Yankees, who remained one game behind Tampa Bay for the second AL wild card. After taking three of four from Baltimore, New York travels next to first-place Boston for a weekend series between division rivals. "Its important," manager JoeGirardi said. "We need to continue to win and we need to continue to take series if we want to play in October." The Yankees (79-68) moved within one game of their high-water mark for the season, 12 games over .500, which last occurred in May. But the victory was marred by another injury, this one to leadoff hitter BrettGardner, who left in the first inning with a strained muscle on his left side. "Ive never had an oblique issue before," Gardner said. "The best thing to do is just wait until (Friday) and see what the MRI says. Thatll paint a much clearer picture." New York led 5-1 before NickMarkakis hit a solo shot in the seventh and DannyValencia homered with two on against DavidRobertson in the eighth. But the Yankees bounced right back in the ninth with an unearned run against Johnson (3-8). Ryan, obtained in a trade with Seattle on Tuesday, led off with a single. ChrisStewart bunted, and Johnson threw wildly into centre field for an error that left two on. "The ball slipped, and that kind of started the whole inning," Johnson said. After another bunt put the runners at second and third, Johnson uncorked a pitch that didnt reach the plate and bounced to the backstop. MarianoRivera (6-2) got straight three outs in the bottom half and was given credit for the win by the official scorer because Robertson was ineffective in the eighth. The start was delayed by rain for 1 hour, 18 minutes. After defeating New York in the opener of the four-game series Monday night, the Orioles needed to win only one of the next three to capture the season series for the first time since 1997. Instead, the Yankees emerged with a 10-9 edge in 2013. Baltimore trails New York and Cleveland in the wild-card chase and fell into a tie with idle Kanssas City, 2 1/2 games behind the Rays. Brandon Gibson Dolphins Jersey. The Orioles begin their final road trip of the season -- to Toronto, Boston and Tampa Bay -- on Friday. "Weve just got to start rattling off some wins," first baseman ChrisDavis said. "This is definitely going to be a big road trip." Reynolds put the Yankees up 2-0 in the second with a drive to left after EduardoNunez hit a leadoff single. It was Reynolds fourth homer in 22 games since joining New York in mid-August. Sixty of Reynolds 200 career home runs came with the Orioles, from 2011-12. Orioles starter Wei-YinChen allowed eight of his first 14 batters to reach base. In the third, after AlfonsoSoriano sandwiched a double between two walks, VernonWells delivered a two-run single. In the bottom half, Baltimore used an RBI single by MannyMachado to close to 4-1. Granderson, who replaced Gardner in centre field, chased Chen with his second homer in two games and New Yorks 10th in the four-game series. Markakis homered off DavidHuff in the bottom half. Huff was originally supposed to start the game, but Girardi figured the left-hander would be more comfortable coming out of the bullpen. PhilHughes started and left in the fourth. In the Orioles eighth, Soriano made a leaping grab at the left-field wall to rob Machado of a home run and keep New Yorks lead at 5-2. But with two outs, AdamJones and Markakis singled before Valencia ripped Robertsons first pitch over the left-field wall. NOTES: The Orioles will be without reliever DarrenODay during the weekend series in Toronto that begins Friday. ODay has been dealing with soreness in his fingers and has pitched only twice this month. ... JasonHammel will start Friday night for Baltimore. He replaces BudNorris, who has been experiencing elbow discomfort. ... The Orioles honoured Rivera before his final game at Camden Yards. The 43-year-old closer received a gift and a standing ovation. Rivera, meanwhile, has donated the baseball he used to record his major league-record 602nd save to the Police Athletic League for auction. ... New York hopes to have C AustinRomine (concussion) back during the weekend series in Boston. "Headaches gone. Necks not sore," said Romine, who sustained the injury Tuesday night. ... Baltimore has won a season series from New York only once since 1982. ' ' ' |

htful chip over David de
What made the 85 Jays extra special was the relative dearth of mercenaries. Buccaneers #38 Jersey . The eventual 1992/1993 championship squads will always have a place in our memories and civic pride, but the teams were filled with free agent assassins. Those 1980s powder blue warriors claim a place a little deeper, a little less diminished by time, because we were emotionally invested in each players trajectory. A Toronto team hasnt been built that way in a long time.(*Authors Note: Before I cue the obvious comparison, let me state plainly for the record: I am a fan of the Toronto Basketball Club but I HATE THE NAME "RAPTORS". I will suppress my urge to call them by their eventual, rightful name the Toronto Towers just to avoid confusion. But understand, every time I type "Raptors", I die a little.)Even in the face of this linguistic predicament, these Raptors have won me over. They are thriving in a delightfully familiar manner, with a buoyant, tough-minded, youthful sense of potential. Like a devoted dog, thought lost for days, scratching at our doorstep impossibly, exhausted, muddied...could it be? Could these upstart Raptors be the generational descendants of the 1985 Jays?Lets ask the pertinent questions, get out the red pen, and assign the grades.Where in the teams history does the season fall?85 BLUE JAYS: A ripe scenario coupled a weary, winner-less town with a franchise still relatively fresh in its ninth season. Mired in expansion doldrums for its first half decade, in 1982, the Blue Jays began an ascent from seventh to sixth place (of a seven-team division). In 1983, it moved into 4th place, winning 89 games, a feat replicated in 1984. 1985 was something new. The club won 99 games (a .615 winning percentage) more victories than the future World Series teams and it would stand until today as the greatest record in team history. No Blue Jays, Raptors or Maple Leafs team has had a better winning percentage since the 1934/35 Leafs (30 wins in a 48-game season).14 RAPTORS: This particular comparison would have lined up better for the Wince (not a typo) Carter-era team, had it made good on its promise in 2001, during the teams sixth season. Now 19 years old, the Raptors arent so green. Still, Torontos weariness from being mired in a decades-long losing streak across all major team sports, engulfs the city as it did back then. Further compelling the argument for similarity, is the Raptors current 45-32 record (a .584 winning percentage), which is the best in franchise history.COMPARISON GRADE: C+How skilled and well-loved are the players, and how do they compare with the talent in the league?85 BLUE JAYS: No surprise the best regular season team in Blue Jays history was arguably the most talented. Stacked with classic Jays in their primes, which included starters Dave Stieb and Jimmy Key, emerging closer Tom Henke, the best young outfield in baseball in Lloyd Moseby, George Bell and Jesse Barfield, and eventually-iconic infielders Tony Fernandez and Ernie Whitt, each one was either raised through the system or had their first taste of big league success in Toronto. The city got to watch the talent grow. To that end, not a single player made a million dollars in 1985. All Star Jimmy Key made $131,000. Tom Henke would get votes for MVP...on a $60,000 stipend. The league competition was also first-rate peep the opposing lineups as the American League was on the upswing, with Kansas City poised to claim the ALs third consecutive title (the AL would win 8 of 11 going forward).14 RAPTORS: The competition is, uh, less fierce. Beyond the general talent deficit in todays NBA (a column Ill be publishing soon), the Raptors Eastern Conference is particularly woeful. Despite Miamis recent prosperity, the East has won only 5 of the past 15 titles, and will be sending at least one sub-.500 team to the big dance this year (and possibly two). In the West, Memphis could finish 50-32 and still miss the postseason.Putting aside the lesser competition, a different story emerges. Like those early Jays, the Raptors have players worth rallying around. Homegrown DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Ross and Jonas "Wasaga" Valanciunas are legit NBA starters capturing the imaginations of wide-eyed fans. Kyle Lowry and Amir Johnson play the game hard and are easy to root for, as is the surprisingly deep bench. The teams burgeoning continuity is the key ingredient as it was with the Jays: fans getting to root as their local talent grows and matures and succeeds (Gallay derisively glares towards south Florida). Even with the team headed towards their greatest season yet, not a single Raptor is even making a modest ten million dollars a year. (A tumbleweed blows across the screen.)COMPARISON GRADE: C+How were the Leafs, arbiters of the citys sports fortunes, doing at the same time?85 BLUE JAYS: As the 1985 baseball season was kicking off, the NHL season was winding down. Mercifully. The Leafs would finish 20-52-8, the worst season in franchise history (before or since). No surprise. They hadnt posted a winning record in six years. Russ Courtnall, Al Iafrate, Gary Leeman and Steve Thomas were rookies which gave the team hope, and they would make the playoffs the following year. (In 1986, the Maple Leafs qualified by winning a shameful 25 of 80 games because 16 of 21 teams made the playoffs. Not making the playoffs was the NHL equivalent of being picked last in gym.)14 RAPTORS: Similarly, the past several years have not been kind. After a team record seven consecutive seasons outside the playoff ranks, the blue and white made the postseason last year defying the advanced metrics but look to be on the outside once again in 2014. There is hope for the future despite a tumultuous plunge in the final months. But hey, lets not nitpick too much, in both eras the Leafs werent in the playoffs, hadnt had much success in the preceding years, and no sober fan in the Big Smoke had any illusions that the Cup was changing downtown addresses soon.COMPARISON GRADE: BHow confident are fans in the coaching staff and front office?85 BLUE JAYS: Bobby Cox a Hall of Famer as of July 27, 2014 was the manager. He took a mediocre team in 1982 and turned it into the best team in the league. He had done it before in Atlanta. He would do it again in Atlanta. He would win Manager of the Year in 1985, and though his departure upset fans, he was offered a ton of money and the GM job he coveted. The 44-year old Cox and GM Pat Gillick who would ultimately put together the talent for back to back World Series wins were as savvy a tandem as the city had seen. Most importantly, they had our confidence.14 RAPTORS: 56-year old coach Dwane Casey grew up in Kentucky, just an eight hour drive from where Bobby Coxokay, Im gonna stop. Direct comparisons wont work here. Casey did not arrive in Toronto with Coxs pedigree, though he also had one prior championship ring, as an assistant on the 2011 Dallas Mavericks. Hes made strides each season and the team is proudly a shadow of his no-nonsense, tough-minded attitude. The city likes him, the players trust him. He has a legitimate shot to duplicate Coxs feat and take home Coach of the Year (though my vote would narrowly go to Jeff Hornacek in Phoenix, because I do not understand how the Suns are doing what they are doing). Two more words to add to this section: Rudy Gay. General Manager Masai "Gillick" Ujiri, 2013s NBA Executive of the Year in Denver, has been masterful in his first season at the helm, as demonstrated by the Sacramento overhaul. History will unfurl each mans ultimate place, but the city is rallying around both, and both are succeeding. Most importantly, they have our confidence.COMPARISON GRADE: A-What was going on in Toronto during the season in question?85 BLUE JAYS: In the spring and summer of 1985, Torontonians were preparing for a mayoral election, still several months away. A longtime incumbent, who refused to celebrate the Gay Pride Parade, would be put to the test by a variety of challengers. Ultimately, reigning Mayor Art Eggleton would win out.14 RAPTORS: In the spring and summer of 2014, Torontonians are preparing for a mayoral election, still several months away. A longtime incumbent, who refuses to celebrate the Gay Pride Parade, is to be put to the test by a variety of challengers, assuming a second term wont conflict with his Jimmy Kimmel-related moonlighting. Same old, same old.COMPARISON GRADE: B+All right, pens down.Depending on how you weigh each category, the comparison works out to a solid "B". Not too bad, really. Going in, I didnt think the teams would match up this well.Of course, these grades are neither objective, nor properly weighted, nor were they subject to any advanced algorithmic, Nate Silver-style analyses, but moreover is the baseline, root-level difficulty. This sort of phenomenon doesnt come down to math. It is a familial connection between team and fans. It is emotional. With so many entertainment sources vying for our attentions, a city-wide swoon grows ever less likely. And unlike baseball, where only four teams in 1985 made the playoffs, basketball allows for 16 entrants, with more making the playoffs than getting left behind. Just making the playoffs or winning the division is not in the same stratum as the accomplishments of those 85 Jays, who were playing for a spot in the World Series. These Raptors seriously we gotta change the name are greyer in years, and owe us more success if they hope to be revered like Bell and Whitt and Gillick. To capture the ardent fans, the otherwise supportive moniker-loathers, and the bandwagoners alike, a deep playoff run will be necessary. Then maybe, Terrence Ross will grab the torch from George Bell. Maybe this team, despite already having a winning record, is more a version of the rarely-considered 1982 Jays, the ones who first showed promise.Maybe they are just something new.GALLAYS POLL #6How do you think the 2013/2014 Raptors stack up to the 1985 Blue Jays?(A) Theyve won me over, same as the Jays did.(B) I like where they are headed, but that 1985 team was special, yo.(C) Way too soon for a comparison, if ever.(D) Im not from Toronto. Could not care less. I have the Fireplace Channel on right now. Major Wright Buccaneers Jersey . -- Nash Scott wore a T-shirt saying "My mom has game. Buccaneers #87 Jersey .com) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback MichaelVick will likely return to the starting lineup Sunday against the New York Giants. CARDIFF -- Kim Bo-kyung headed in a stoppage-time equalizer to give Cardiff a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday and deny David Moyes team a chance to move into the top four. Kim met a free kick at the near post to rescue a point for the Welsh club and Wayne Rooney then wasted a great chance to net a winner moments later. Rooney had put United ahead in the 15th minute with a shot from inside the area that deflected off a defender and into the net. The striker had been lucky to remain on the pitch earlier when he kicked out at Jordon Mutch but escaped with just a booking. Former United player Fraizer Campbell equalized for Cardiff in the 33rd, but Patrice Evra restored the visitors lead when he headed in a corner just before halftime. Campbell hit thhe crossbar with a delightful chip over David de Gea as the hosts searched for the equalizer, while Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall dived quickly to push out a goalbound header by Marouane Fellaini to keep them in the game. Michael Koenen Buccaneers Jersey. After a shaky start to the season, United is unbeaten in 10 games, but Kims late header slowed its revival and left the team sixth in the standings. Cardiff, which beat Manchester City at home earlier this season, is in 15th with 13 points from 12 games. Rooney had a chance to steal the win for United just after Kims equalizer when he suddenly found himself alone with Marshall, but opted not to shoot and tried to pull the ball back for Danny Welbeck instead. However, the pass was much too weak and Marshall dove down to scoop it up. ' ' ' |

CHARLOTTE, N. Stevan Ridley Womens Jersey .C. -- The SteveSmith era in Carolina is over. The Panthers released their all-time leading receiver on Thursday after 13 seasons. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said it "was not an easy decision" in a press release. "Steve has been one of the NFLs finest receivers for over a decade and has been the face of the franchise for a large part of the teams history," Gettleman said. "As a team, we made a step forward last year; however we are also a team in transition, which is a part of the NFL." Smith said on radio Thursday hes not angry about the decision. "Its devastating to hear that you are getting fired, but its also exciting because that frees me up to be pursued by other teams," Smith told Taylor Zarzour of SiriusXMs Bleacher Report Radio." I have never become a free agent before so I will get a few free dinners out of it at some nice expensive restaurants. I want to enjoy the experience that, frankly, I will never experience again." Smith reiterated he wants to play in the NFL and that being released "awoke a sleeping giant" inside of him. The decision comes one day after Smiths agent, Derrick Fox, told The Associated Press that the 13-year NFL veteran "is not going to play for the Panthers next year, I know that." Fox said the Panthers never asked Smith, who turns 35 in May, to restructure his current contract. The Panthers were unable to trade Smith, who was set to cost $7 million under this years salary cap. The Panthers still owe Smith $3 million this season. The decision has not been a popular one among Carolina fans. Gettleman addressed that in his press release. "When I took this position I knew that difficult decisions would have to be made along the way," Gettleman said. "To move on from a storied veteran player is probably the most difficult of all. A decision not to be taken lightly. However, after much thought I feel very strongly its the right one." "As Ive stated many times, all decisions I make will be in the long-term best interest of the Carolina Panthers. Decisions, either popular or unpopular, have to be made for the greater good and it is imperative to take an unemotional global view. Sometimes it may appear that short term interests will suffer, and I can assure you we have no interest in taking a step back from our 2013 accomplishments." The Panthers also lost wide receivers DomenikHixon and TedGinn Jr. to free agency on Thursday. Hixon signed with the Chicago Bears and Ginn with the Arizona Cardinals. Panthers cornerback CaptainMunnerlyn told The Associated Press he has signed with the Minnesota Vikings for a deal that could pay him $15 million over three years with incentives. One possible replacement at wide receiver is free agent HakeemNicks, a Charlotte native who played for New York Giants. The Smith move marks the end of an era for the Panthers. Smith joined the team as a third-round draft pick out of Utah in 2001. He made an immediate impact in the NFL, returning the opening kickoff of the season for a touchdown against the Vikings. He became the first Panthers rookie selected to the Pro Bowl, earning that honour as a return specialist. Known for his feisty behaviour on the field, Smith became a dominant receiver over the next 12 seasons. He is Carolinas all-time leader with 75 total touchdowns and has 836 receptions for 12,197 yards. "On the football field Steve had a competitive arrogance that (was) second to none -- second to none," said former Panthers quarterback JakeDelhomme in a telephone interview. "That helped him be as good as he was. He made other guys step up their game. But off the field he was totally different. He loves his wife and his family. Hes a genuinely good person with a great heart." Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in the release: "He is a great competitor with Hall of Fame-worthy statistics and has made a great contribution to our community." Fox said Smith would have welcomed a chance to move inside to slot receiver, but the team never offered him that opportunity. As productive as Smith was, his fiery personality often rubbed people the wrong way, and some viewed him as a distraction in the locker room. Smith had run-ins with teammates on at least two occasions. He punched out fellow wide receiver AnthonyBright in a film room fight and later socked cornerback KenLucas on the field during a practice at training camp in Spartanburg, S.C. On both occasions, Smith was suspended by the team. Delhomme said that was a "humbling experience" for Smith, who apologized to Lucas and the teams fans after the incident. Despite the two incidents, Smith was immensely popular with the fan base, in large part due to his production on the field. He also worked hard to change his public image over the last several years and has been an active member of the Charlotte community. When asked if he was surprised Smith was released, Delhomme said, "It does surprise, but thats the NFL. I mean, look, PeytonManning plays for the Denver Broncos -- that the way it goes." NOTES: Panthers backup quarterback DerekAnderson announced Thursday on Twitter he has re-signed with Carolina for a fourth season. Anderson tweeted: "Happy to be coming back to Charlotte next season!"Rob Ninkovich Womens Jersey . "Trying to breathe," he said with a grin. Bernier stopped 42 of 43 shots on Monday night, including all 22 in a hectic middle frame, his heroic performance propelling the Leafs toward an undue point in their final game before the Christmas break. Shane Vereen Jersey . While great crowds will be expected in all three cities, there has been talk of the return of Canadas greatest MMA athlete, George St-Pierre, who has been sidelined since December with a knee injury, to bolster the show in his hometown of Montreal.SAN DIEGO -- At the end of the longest nine-inning game in San Diego Padres history, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle summed it up best Monday night. "Its time to go home," he said. JordyMercer homered and matched a career high with four of Pittsburghs 16 hits in a 10-3 romp over the Padres. NeilWalker added three hits and three RBIs, and JoshHarrison also had three hits to help Pittsburgh win for the ninth time in 13 games. The Pirates are enjoying their West Coast swing so far. After taking three of four at Dodger Stadium, they headed south and won again in a game that took 4 hours, 4 minutes. "It was a long one, thats for sure," Mercer said. "But it is always good when you score a lot of runs." CharlieMorton (2-7) tied a career best with nine strikeouts in five innings. He allowed two runs and three hits in winning for the first time in five road starts this year. Three relievers finished the five-hitter after Mortons curveball baffled the Padres. "He was still dealing with baserunners," Hurdle said. "But he was able to compete and get outs when he needed to. He gave us five solid innings." Mercer scored four times from the No. 8 spot in the batting order and went 4 for 5 to raise his average 20 points to .219. He entered with one home run and seven RBIs in 146 at-bats. "The people believe in me here," Mercer said. "Having that support, having that confidence every time, its nice." Hurdle talked about how dangerous this Pirates lineup can be. Mercer agreed. "I think when we all get hot theres no telling what we can do," Mercer said. "The skys the limit for us because we can hit the ball out of the ballpark, we can run, we can do all sorts of stuff. Its just a matter of us all clicking together." TimStauffer (2-2) lasted only 2 2-3 innings, his second consecutive disappointing start since being inserted into the rotation because of elbow injuries to AndrewCashner and RobbieErlin. "The first two innings were pretty good, then he seemed to lose the feeling for his pitches," San Diego manager Bud Black said. The PPadres threw 249 pitches, the most ever by their staff in a nine-inning game. Tommy Kelly Womens Jersey. . "It was just unfortunate it unraveled the way it did," Stauffer said. The Pirates broke open the game with three runs each in the seventh and eighth. The big blow was Walkers two-run double in the seventh, propelling Pittsburgh to its sixth win in the last nine road games. Four times in the previous six innings the Pirates loaded the bases but scored only one run. They stranded a season-high 16 runners. The teams combined for 12 walks and six hit batters. Through the first four innings, Morton didnt allow a run or hit -- although the Padres reached on an error, two walks and two hit batters. But in the fifth, EverthCabreras double drove in AlexiAmarista after he opened the inning with a single. SethSmith drove in Cabrera with a single, trimming the Pirates lead to 3-2, but pinch-hitter TommyMedica struck out with the bases loaded. Pittsburgh had extended its advantage to 3-0 on Mercers RBI single in the fourth. StarlingMarte scored after he was hit by a pitch from reliever AlexTorres. Mercer snapped a scoreless tie with a home run to start the third inning, a 414-foot shot into the second deck beyond the left-field fence. IkeDavis sacrifice fly scored Harrison for a 2-0 lead. NOTES: Cashner threw a four-inning simulated game and didnt report any discomfort. Cashner, on the DL since mid-May with a sore right elbow, could start this weekend. "That was a good step forward," Black said. Cashner said hes adjusted the grip on his slider to take pressure off his elbow. ... Erlin hasnt been cleared to resume throwing. Hes on the DL with a sore left elbow. ... Pirates RHP StolmyPimentel (right shoulder inflammation) made a rehab start at Class-A Bradenton, throwing two scoreless innings. ... Harrison has batted leadoff 15 straight times, the longest stretch by a Pirates player this season. ... RHP GerritCole (5-3, 3.80 ERA) faces Padres RHP Jesse Hahn on Tuesday. It will be Hahns major league debut after appearing in 10 games with Double-A San Antonio, where he was 2-1 with a 2.20 ERA. ' ' ' |

OAKLAND, Calif. Manny Ramirez . -- The Oakland Athletics have acquired minor league right-hander Deck McGuire from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash. The As said Friday that McGuire will be optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. The 25-year-old McGuire is 6-9 with a 4.21 ERA in 20 starts for Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A New Hampshire. The 6-foot-6 McGuire was picked 11th overall by Toronto in the 2010 draft. Michael Schofield . -- Argentinas Miguel Carballo won the Childrens Hospital Classic on Sunday for his second career Nationwide Tour title, making three eagles in an 8-under 64 en route to a two-stroke victory. Brian Dawkins . - The Colorado Rockies first full-squad workout was missing a key arm.Steven Jyles may not be the answer as Travis Lulays backup after all. According to the Vancouver Province, Jyles decided not to show up for mini-camp with the B.C. Lions on Monday due to financial reasons, leading to speculation he may not join the Lions. Jyles, who agreed to terms with the Lions earlier this month, is currently working in sales in Dallas and told Lions general manager Wally Buono he was passing on the voluntary camp to make money back home. Lions head coach Mike Benevides sugggested Jyles was still weighing his options but the veteran quarterbacks agent disagreed. Quinton Carter. "It wasnt the right fit for him," Fleiszer told the Province. "If hed like to play down the road, we can look at that, but for now he made a very commendable decision." Chris Hart, Jarrett Lee and John Beck are the other quarterbacks in competition for the backup role. Lulay underwent shoulder surgery in November and tossed some short passes at mini-camp. ' ' ' |

In this weeks Three-Man Weave, Will Strickland and Duane Watson of TSN 1050s 1 On 1 With Will & Duane are joined by Elias Sbiet, co-captain of North Pole Hoops, a leader in covering Canadian hoop stars at every level, to talk the Sterlings Monopoly Money, who can help keep Melo in Gotham, why the Raptors might go after Bramptons own Tyler Ennis in the Draft and of course, cover issues in the NBA Playoffs. Kevin Pamphile Buccaneers Jersey . Will this $2 billion sale of the Los Angeles Clippers affect the future pricing of NBA team deals? Watson: This is somewhat of an anomaly. It was the second biggest team sale in the history of sport, after the Los Angeles Dodgers went for $2 billion in 2012. Between New York and LA there is no bigger market in sports, which definitely played a factor in price. In addition to the fact this wasnt an owner looking at prospective buyers; it was more of a garage sale with billionaires coming out of the woodwork to bid. Sbiet: There are other teams in the NBA that would have higher bidders, so yes it would affect future pricing. The Lakers are estimated to be worth close to $1 billion, and if the Buss family wanted to sell, there would be potential buyers at their door and the Lakers would be in position to ask for more than $2 billion when considering the rich history. The other factors involved in the sale of a team such as; the citys population, team success and current value would be more compulsory for future pricing. Strickland: No. The expected financial windfall of the Sterlings is based on exigent circumstances, which have been well-documented within multiple media platforms. On top of the fact that the real estate is in a major market and huge free agent/player destination never hurts this price. Dont expect to see numbers like this coming up for a future sale of the Utah Jazz or Cleveland Cavaliers. Its simple geo-economics...and all mathematics. After Tyler Ennis pre-draft workout, do the Toronto Raptors trade up for the hometown point guard? Watson: Tyler Ennis would be a great pick up for any NBA team, hes the best point guard in the Draft. It would only make sense for them to do that if they arent willing to pay GreivisVasquez or worse not pay KyleLowry this summer. Both are concerns, but Ennis has the type of poise that DamianLillard had when he came in the league and exceeded expectations. Sbiet: In a record setting NBA Draft for Canadians, it would be a smart move for the Raps to keep the basketball culture rolling in this country by adding one to the roster, especially someone as celebrated and accomplished as Ennis. Hes someone you dont have to worry about as management or a coaching staff. Ennis is a true professional that will adapt quickly and earn respect from the team as a leader. On the defensive end his length and continuous development in lateral speed will help against the NBAs explosive guards. Every rookie is going to have to make adjustments coming into the league but Ennis is not one who will struggle to make them. On the other end, if they were to trade up is Ennis the piece they need or are looking for in T.O? Strickland: Depends on circumstance. In our #1On1 Mock Draft here on TSN.ca, I had Tyler going number six to Boston, which is pretty high, but also insurance given the persistent RajonRondo trade rumours. There is a feeling that Wheel & Deal Danny Ainge is in business to do business and Masai Ujiri is always looking to protect and serve the Raptors. Ennis would provide Ujiri with a solid contingency in the event either KyleLowry or GreivisVasquez are lost to free agency. Its a long shot, but if the asset management play is right, I roll those dice to put a hometown guy who can be an impact player on my roster. If CarmeloAnthony would "embrace" MarkJackson as coach, should the New York Knicks try and keep the pending free agent happy? Watson: The Knicks need to make decisions on coaching based on their ball club and not what their star wants. There is no guarantee that Anthony will stay and barring a miracle, the Knicks will have to endure some losses before they get to the winning pedigree of a couple of years ago. They need a coach who can command the locker room, Jackson is that guy, it just shouldnt be predicated on Melo. Sbiet: Im not a fan of the idea of "if" Carmelo embraces MarkJackson. Yes, Melo is a superstar but superstars are being allowed too much control over management. If he wants to walk then let him go. Jackson could be exactly what New York needs in terms of someone that can get the Knicks personnel on one page. He revived the scene for the Warriors and has built a contending winning culture in the state. Of course theres a lot of pressure if he were to walk into New York, but his rock steady composure translates onto his players and that could make a major difference in his first year. MarkJacksons record improved gradually to a 51-31 season. Anthony and the Knicks would be fortunate to land Jackson. Strickland: MarkJackson should have some sway in the executive offices and the locker room of the Worlds Most Famous Arena. As a well-respected colour commentator turned relatively successful coach and a popular former Rookie of The Year with the Knicks, Jackson has the star power to aid Phil Jackson in having Carmelo stay in Gotham. But they have no real assets, no draft picks, a paucity of keen playmakers and no leadership right now. Would you stay? Bon Voyage, Melo! Who is doing a better coaching job in the Western Conference Finals, Scott Brooks or Gregg Popovich? Watson: In various stretches both, however Scott Brooks adjustments inserting ReggieJackson into the starting line-up and giving key minutes to JeremyLamb, while benching ThaboSefolosha have paid dividends. Plus, setting a quickened tempo in the game using the fast break on the Spurs old legs, has worked to the Thunders advantage. Sbiet: Pop, but its not a no brainer, utmost respect for Brooks. Coach Popovichs control of substitutions and play calling is an art form of its own. At this point and time the Spurs are executing so well and on many possessions, dissecting OKCs defence, especially in transition. The three games that belong to the Spurs have not just been won, but dominated. Coach Pop injects his bench at key turn around points in the game and his bench responds with major contribution. You know I cant be on here without adding a little Canadian flavour. Lets refer back to that nasty dunk by Corey Joseph after splitting the D. Strickland: Its damn near blasphemous to suggest someone can outcoach Gregg Popovich. I almost slapped myself for pondering. Perish the thought! However, lets give credit where its due. Scott Brooks dug himself and his Thunder team out of its own playoff grave once again by letting go of his fierce loyalty to his starting lineup, pulling Sefolosha for more offence with ReggieJackson and giving StevenAdams more time in the middle over KendrickPerkins. It didnt hurt that Brooks may or may not have employed the services of Mr. Miyagis Healing Hands to get PF SergeIbaka back in the lineup to stop the hemorrhaging of points in the paint and create court comfort for RussellWestbrook and KevinDurant to tie the series at two wins apiece. Pop and the Spurs counterpunched deftly in Game 5. Now Brooks has to show and prove once again in Game 6 or else its #TackleBox Season. What happens to Larry Birds Pacers if they lose the Eastern Conference Finals? Watson: Something has to happen, the Pacers havent been right since January. PaulGeorge is a keeper, but after that, do what changes are necessary. This team was built to make it to the NBA Finals, and they havent got over the hump. I like Coach Vogel, but one of his assistants, Nate McMillan, has had experience as a head coach in the NBA if Bird is willing to make a change. Either that, or pray that one of the Big Three leaves Miami. Sbiet: You never know what to expect with the Pacers. Will Hibbert show up? Will they quit their antics and play basketball? The drama thats been surrounding the team means theres been internal affairs that have been lingering. Outside of Frank Vogel, George and LuisScola most pieces are replaceable or at least worth it for Larry Bird to shop around. The Pacers need a backcourt that can consistently come out and defend teams with serious fire power at the three point line. Strickland: Full scale upheaval, starting with Frank Vogel, who has proven to be a solid coach. But the perceived inability to hold his talented but flawed locker room from strife and turmoil in the midst of fighting for what should have been a singular goal will be considered. He would have not been the man to drive the Pacers past the Miami Heat and into the NBA Finals. The question of re-signing mercurial do-everything guard LanceStephenson is also at the top of President and GM Larry Birds list. Small market teams are loathe to exceed the salary cap threshold and Indiana, already locked into well over $52 million in cap space next season for four of their starters, face an unenviable situation where Lance will get overpaid for his services. The Where is the Issue: Where does he go and where does all of this leave the Indiana Pacers? It would seem they would be lost in the hinterland of teams like the Cleveland Cavs of the mid-late 80s and Sacramento Kings of the late-90s/early 2000s who were on the cusp of greatness, but always seemed to fall just short in their quest for NBA championship glory. The Three-Man Weave contributors are co-hosts of TSN Radio 1050s 1-on-1 with Will and Duane, Will Strickland (@WallStrizzle1), Duane Watson (@byDuaneWatson) and guest contributor with an injured calf coming through those locker room doors this week, Elias Sbiet (@Elias_NPH). Warren Sapp Buccaneers Jersey . Harris is entering his third season with the Riders. He has appeared in 10 regular-season games, registering 30 tackles and an interception. Buccaneers #87 Jersey . The Miami star has sure had fun against his old nemesis this season. James scored a season-high 42 points and the Heat tuned up for a showdown with Oklahoma City by beating the Mavericks 117-106 Tuesday night.Melbourne, Australia (Sports Network) - Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were each straight-set winners Friday in third-round action at the Australian Open. Federer, this years third seed and a four-time winner in Melbourne, battled through a tough first set against Ivo Karlovic before capturing a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, 6-3 win over the hard-serving Croatian. The 16-time Grand Slam champion had to save a set point in the first-set tiebreaker and did so with a lob over the 6-foot-10 Karlovic. "Im happy I found a way today," said Federer, who played his 998th career match on Friday. "[The] first set was crucial, like I said. [Im] happy to be through in straight sets." The second-seeded Nadal, who beat Federer for the 2009 Aussie Open crown, had little trouble in a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 rout of Slovakias Lukas Lacko. The 10-time Grand Slam champ has won each of his three matches in straight sets and hasnt yet faced a tiebreaker. "Ive played three matches at a very good level," Nadal said. "Today was one of the best. [It was] solid, without mistakes, [I was] comfortable with the serve [and] having good returns." Things could start to get difficult for both men in the fourth round. Federer, who had three days off before Fridays win because of a walkover in the second round, will be tested by Australian crowd favorite Bernard Tomic, while Nadal will square off against fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Tomic, who rallied from two sets down to win his first-round match against Spains Fernando Verdasco, went five again on Friday and advanced with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-3 win over 13th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine. The 30-year-old Federer and 19-year-old Tomic have met just once previously, a four-set win for the Swiss veteran in a Davis Cup World Group playoff last year. As for Nadal, hell take on a familiar opponent in Lopez. The two have met 10 times previously, with Nadal winning eight. Lopez needed five sets to advance on Friday, as the 18th seed outlasted American John Isner, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-7 (0-7), 6-1. "I hit great shots," Lopez said about his effort.Lavonte David Buccaneers Jersey. "Sometimes I hit a little bit too much, too many double faults at one point, but overall I think I played great. I played great points." Isner was the last American hope in Melbourne. Its the first time since 1973 that no American man has reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open. There were also no American men entered in 1973. "Its very disappointing," Isner stated. "Thats not a good effort from the Americans this tournament. I knew going in today I was the last one left and I wanted to keep on going, but just didnt happen. But its very ugly, to be honest, to have no one in the round of 16. Weve got to try to rectify that next time the big tournaments roll around." Other winners Friday were seventh-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, 10th-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, 11th-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina and unseeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber. Berdych earned a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 victory over South Africas Kevin Anderson and will next take on Almagro, who notched a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 6-4 win over Switzerlands Stanislas Wawrinka. Del Potro dropped a mere five games in a straight-set thumping of Taipeis Yen-Hsun Lu and will next face Kohlschreiber, who toppled Colombias Alejandro Falla, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Falla eliminated eighth-seeded American Mardy Fish in the second round. The third round continues Saturday with eight matches and features top-seeded Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Aussie veteran Lleyton Hewitt. Djokovic will battle Frenchman Nicolas Mahut with a potential fourth-round match against Hewitt on the horizon. Hewitt would have to beat Canadas Milos Raonic on Saturday. The fourth-seeded Murray, who lost to Djokovic in last years final and was also the runner-up to Federer two years ago, will meet Frenchman Michael Llodra. Ferrer, the fifth seed, will tangle with Argentinas Juan Ignacio Chela, while the sixth-seeded Tsonga will take on Portugals Frederico Gil. ' ' ' |

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns running back PeytonHillis is ready to make his return after missing six straight games with a hamstring injury. Walt Aikens Jersey . Hillis practised Friday for the first time since Nov. 4 and may play on Sunday at Cincinnati. Hillis first got hurt on Oct. 16 in Oakland and was poised to return three weeks ago before he aggravated the hamstring during practice. Earlier this week, Browns coach Pat Shurmur ruled Hillis out for this weeks game, but Hillis is now a game-time decision against the Bengals. Hillis second season with the Browns has been loaded with drama. He expressed disappointment at not getting a contract extension and missed one game with strep throat on the advice of his agent. Louis Delmas Dolphins Jersey . A Maricopa County grand jury indicted Sharper in sexual assaults allegedly committed on Nov. 21 in Tempe. The four-page indictment dated Tuesday accuses the 38-year-old Sharper of two counts of sexual assault and three counts of administering dangerous drugs. Sharper knowingly administered the sedative zolpidem to three different victims and then had "sexual intercourse or oral sexual contact" with two of them without their consent, the document states. Marcus Thigpen Womens Jersey . Niese pitched seven steady innings on a rainy Tuesday night and DanielMurphy had three hits to lead New York to a 6-1 victory over the Phillies.ORLANDO, Fla. -- Cleveland coach Mike Brown has been saying for games theres no magical way to make his team play better on the road. A big scoring night by KyrieIrving is one way to end the woes. Irving scored 31 points, DionWaiters added 21, and the Cavaliers used a big second half to earn just their second road victory of the season, 109-100 over the Orlando Magic on Friday night. Waiters had 20 points in the second half and scored 16 straight at one point as Cleveland outmuscled the Magic 36-30 in the paint. For Irving, it was his second straight 30-point game, following up a 37-point effort on Tuesday against New York. "Were starting to develop our identity as a great team, especially when things arent going our way offensively," Irving said. "Were not doing as well as we want on the road, but were taking steps in the right direction." Cleveland has won three straight and five out of six. It was its first road win since Nov. 16 and what the Cavs hope can help them start to turn around what had been a NBA-worst 1-10 road record. The Cavaliers came into the game allowing opponents to shoot 47.2 per cent against them away from home. The Magic started the night hot, but cooled to 43 per cent for the night. Brown said he particularly liked how his team took care of the ball with only two second-half turnovers. "At the end of the first quarter we got careless and started turning the ball over and that hurt us," he said. "But to have two turnovers in the second half was huge." VictorOladipo tied a career high with 26 points. ArronAfflalo and JameerNelson each added 17. Orlando tried different combinations on Irving, but nothing worked as it blew a 14-point, first-half lead. That happened despite the Magic scoring 25 fast-break points. After the hot start, Orlando finished the first half just 9 of 29 from field. Meanwhile, Irving carried Clevelands offensive load with 16 first-half points as it recovered from a 9-for-24 shooting effort in first quarter to go 12 for 19 in the second. "Only one person had the ball in his hands and that one person was shooting," Magic coach JacqueVaughn said. "So whether it was Kyriee shooting or DionWaiters shooting, I think that limited their risk of turning the basketball over. Mike Wallace Jersey. " The Magic have lost seven of their last eight and clearly have a lot to figure out as they head back on the road next week for back-to-back games against Oklahoma City and Chicago. Orlandos recent frustrations seemed to bubble up in the final seconds, when forward AndrewNicholson shoved Cavaliers big man AndersonVarejao in the back after he made an easy layup. With Varejao -- who had gone to the bench in the first half after banging his knee -- still on the floor, Waiters briefly confronted Nicholson as referees stepped in. Following a huddle by officials, Nicholson was given a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected. "I didnt try to hurt him," Nicholson said. "I didnt think I pushed him that hard, but its part of the game." The Magic seemed to be on their way to victory in the first half. After being stricken by a spate of injuries early in the season, they had forward TobiasHarris on the floor for just the second time this season. Harris, who has been hampered by a sprained left ankle, didnt start and played sparingly, logging just 15 minutes. Harris 3-pointer gave the Magic a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter before Waiters ignited a 14-0 run that put Cleveland up 95-85 with less than six minutes to play. The Cavaliers pushed their lead to 101-90 with 2:29 to play. The Magic had one more run in them and got within 101-96 on a pair of free throws by Afflalo, but they got no closer. "I had to turn it up. I had to be aggressive," Waiters said. "I was frustrated in the first half. I let every little thing get the best of me, and I just told myself to come out in the second half and be aggressive. Shots were going in and out on me and it was frustrating. I just had to gather myself and get my thoughts together." Notes: As part of the teams yearlong 25th anniversary celebration, the Magic honoured former guard Dennis Scott on Friday night. Orlandos fourth pick in the 1990 NBA draft, Scott played seven seasons for the Magic from 1990 to 1997 and is the franchises career leader in 3-point field goals made (981). ' ' ' |

NEW ORLEANS -- An attorney for former NFL star DarrenSharper said Friday that there is no evidence to support an allegation that he sexually assaulted a woman in New Orleans last September. Shannon Sharpe . Nandi (nahn-dee) Campbell said that her investigation shows the woman in the complaint followed Sharper willingly throughout the evening. And, Campbell stressed that the ex-Saints safety has not been charged in the New Orleans complaint. Asked for information on the Sharper investigation, New Orleans police Friday released a brief report. It said the unidentified woman said she was assaulted by a man who took her to his apartment the night of Sept. 23 after she consumed a large amount of alcohol. The report does not name Sharper, but Campbell confirmed that he is the man in the report. Campbell noted that the complaint said the woman had said she consumed a large amount of alcohol. Campbell said in an interview that her own investigation turned up witnesses who saw the woman that evening. "There were numerous witnesses who observed the complainant on her own and also observed her after encountering Sharper," Campbell said in a statement. "Certain witnesses observed Sharper mingling with various patrons and observed the complainant follow him willingly throughout the evening." Police say the investigation remains open. The New Orleans complaint came to light last week after Sharper was arrested in Los Angeles on a suspicion of rape charge that is not related to the Louisiana case. He has a Feb. 14 court appearance scheduled. Campbell said she did not know who he had hired to defend him in the Los Angeles case. Sharper, 38, played in the NFL from 1997-2010, mostly with the Packers. He retired after the 2010 season. He was selected All-Pro six times and chosen for the Pro Bowl five times. He played in two Super Bowls, one with the Packers as a rookie and a second with the Saints. Emmanuel Sanders . Houston won 3-0 to advance to face New York in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Last in the game, Di Vaio and Romero got into a shoving match with several Houston players. Romero appeared to elbow and kick Houston defender Kofi Sarkodie. DeMarcus Ware . TORONTO You know a baseball team is red hot when its rolling out different heroes each day. C.J. Spiller Bills Jersey . EdwinEncarnacion carried the torch for two days at Fenway Park this week; MelkyCabrera and JoseBautista have had their moments; lately AnthonyGose has contributed. In Friday nights edge-of-your-seat, 3-2 victory over Oakland, the heroes were different. One of them made his Blue Jays debut, LiamHendriks, a 25-year-old who grew up on the other side of the world in Australia. Just up from Triple-A Buffalo, hed managed to fly his wife, Kristi, up from Fort Myers, Florida. His mother, Debbie, was home watching him pitch, sipping a Saturday morning coffee while he toiled on a Friday night. Another, SteveTolleson, is playing for his third major league team and in his sixth big league organization. Oh, and theres still Encarnacion, although it was his defence Blue Jays fans would celebrate on this night, his home run bat tucked away but likely to reemerge at any moment. Hendriks pitched 5 2/3 innings of one run ball. He allowed three hits and walked three Athletics. At times he was hit hard, needing almost every inch of the 375 feet to the power alleys and the 400 feet to dead centerfield. But, as is the case when a team is rolling, things seem to go its way. "I felt really good early," said Hendriks. "I kind of got away from my game plan a little bit in the last couple of innings but the defence picked me up big time. I mean, when youve got guys like this behind you it gives you that much extra confidence that you can go out there and youre not having to strike everybody out. Its fantastic." Entering the game Hendriks had two career wins and an ERA north of six spread over parts of three seasons with Minnesota. He won his third career game. His ERA came down. The 30-year-old Tolleson contributed the big offensive blow, a two out, two-run home run in the second that broke the scoreless tie and gave Toronto a lead it wouldnt relinquish. The less talked about part of his game were the two big double plays turned in the third and seventh innings. On both occasions, Oaklands NickPunto slid hard and fair into Tolleson. Each time, he made the turn. "Thats what a second baseman is here to do," said Tolleson. "The main goal is to get the ball turn. On this turf it allows us to play a little bit deeper but when you play deeper it also gives you time to get on you a little bit more. We got some big ones turned today and it was great to come out with that win." Encarnacion made two great defensive plays. Holding on a runner with two out in the sixth, he came off the bag and dived to his right to snag JoshReddicks hard hit ground ball. Encarnacion sprung to his feet and slid into first, beating a hustling Reddick to the bag by a couple of steps. Then in the eighth, Oakland had two on and one out. The Jays led, at the time, 3-1. YoenisCespedes hit a flare to shallow right field. Encarnacion tracked the ball, making an over-the-shoulder, basket catch for the second out. "The last week or so I think hes played as good as Ive ever seen play over there," said manager John Gibbons. "That ball over his head today, I dont know if thats going to hit fair or foul but thats huge at that moment. Eddie, hes a big guy but hes a pretty good athlete." The Jays have won four in a row, nine of 11 and 14 of 19. R.A.Dickey will make the start on Saturday afternoon and with the forecast calling for a clear day and 23C, the roof may be open. Oakland will counter with former Blue Jay JesseChavez. REYES DEFENCE There have been times, since his return from tightness in his right hamstring, that JoseReyes has had trouble getting to ground balls which require a number of strides to either his left or his right. Reyes disputes any suggestion hes struggled defensively. "I think Ive been playing very good defence," Reyes told TSN.ca. "I feel like everything is there. Last year I had a tough time going to my left side because my ankle but this year my ankle has been 100-percent. I feel like Im moving around the field very good. I have no problem." Reyes is right on both counts. His defence is much better than last year and he can blame his ankle injury for decreased range. According to fangraphs.com Reyes Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR), a mathematical equation which calculates the number of runs saved or given up by a defender, is -1.1 so far this year. Thats a big improvement over his -5.3 of 2013. Still, the calculation suggests Reyes is an average to below-average defender. The great equalizer is Reyes plus arm. Typically, if he gets to the ball he will throw the runner out. Reyes insists hes healthy. The way hes running the bases, hes stolen seven and been caught only once and has appeared comfortable stretching base hits into doubles, reflects his claim. Running the bases and playing shortstop make different demands on the body. "When you run the bases you just run the bases but when you go side to side there are different steps you have to make," said Reyes. "I think its a little different. But like I said, everything feels good. My hamstring now, thank God, is 100-percent. I can go full out no problem." JANSSEN BACK IN FORM CaseyJanssen is a perfect six-for-six in save opportunities since his return from an oblique strain on May 12. He hasnt thrown more than 19 pitches in any of his six appearances that number reached in his first outing and hes had a runner in scoring position only once. For a guy who missed most of spring training due to shoulder discomfort and then didnt throw for most of April thanks to the oblique problem, Janssen hasnt missed a beat. Dont expect a cake and balloons celebration, though. "Im not satisfied unless Im darn near perfect," said Janssen. "Thats the expectation I put on myself. I havent thought of it as Oh, Im doing so great, Im just doing what I hope and expect to do." Janssen picked up his fourth and fifth saves on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Boston. Manager John Gibbons said after the game on Wednesday he wouldnt use Janssen on a third-straight day. Then, on Thursday afternoon, Gibbons suggested Janssen had asked not to be ruled out. Turns out there was no save situation in the series finale, a 7-2 Blue Jays win, but would Janssen have been available? "Do I think I could have? Yes. Do I think that in a smart, perfect world, do they need to push that right then? Probably not," said Janssen. "Its a long year. Weve got hopefully a lot of wins to come if we continue to play like were going to play were going to be in a race in August and September. I think thats when you push guys a little bit more to their limits." With an inning under his belt in Fridays 3-2 win, Janssen has pitched on three of the last four days and on four of the last seven. Time will tell how he holds up but since his return, hes answered the call each time hes been needed. ROGERS DESIGNATED FOR ASSIGNMENT The Blue Jays are loathe to expose pitching depth to waivers but thanks to his poor start and the need to create a roster spot for Friday nights starter, LiamHendriks, reliever EsmilRogers was designated for assignment. "Hed been scuffling," said manager John Gibbons. "We had to make a move with somebody. We want to get a look at Rasmussen and see what he can do." After a solid 2013 season, his first in Toronto, which saw Rogers pitch effectively in relief and make 20 starts to cover injuries in the rotation, he never got on track this year. In 16 relief appearances, 20 2/3 innings, Rogers posted a 6.97 ERA and a 5.34 FIP. Most egregious was the home runs against number. The five Rogers allowed was the most on the pitching staff, starters included. Rogers final appearance came on Wednesday at Fenway Park. He entered the game in the eighth with the Blue Jays leading 6-1. He was touched for three runs on three hits and turned a comfortable lead into a nailbiter. "I dont think you can pin it on one outing," said Gibbons. "Its been a struggle for him." Rogers, 28, was acquired from Cleveland for YanGomes and MikeAviles on November 3, 2012. He was, indirectly, the asset the Blue Jays had from John Farrells departure to the Red Sox. Rogers is owed $1.85 million this season. Keith Rivers Jersey . Making his first start of the preseason, Miller put the Caps ahead in the 26th minute and Mattocks added an insurance marker his second goal in as many matches to carry the Caps to victory. Recently acquired goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi looked sharp when called upon, making a pair of saves to earn a clean sheet in his first appearance with Whitecaps FC. T.J.Graham Bills Jersey . Adams State Universitys Josh Kioh takes flight with a bounce pass alley-oop 360. We dont know who soared in the air for longer, Kioh, or the kids flying around the gym after the destruction.ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit wide receiver RyanBroyles is dealing with another season-ending injury. Coach Jim Schwartz says Broyles has a ruptured Achilles tendon and will have surgery Tuesday. Broyles was hurt in Sundays 31-30 win over Dallas. Broyles rookie season in 2012 was halted when he went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Kraig Urbik Jersey. . He also tore the ACL in his left knee when he was a senior at Oklahoma. The 25-year-old Broyles has eight catches this season. His injury leaves the Lions thin at wide receiver beyond star CalvinJohnson. NateBurleson is making his way back after injuring his arm in a car crash last month. ' ' ' |

The Toronto Maple Leafs forward and Nashville Predators goaltender highlighted Mondays waiver transactions, with Calgarys ChuckKobasew and Edmontons PhilipLarsen also being placed on waivers. The 26-year-old McLaren has no points and a minus-3 rating in 26 games with the Leafs this season. Dubnyk, who was traded from Edmonton to Nashville for MattHendricks earlier this season, has played in just two games for his new team this year. The 29-year-old has an .891 save percentage and 3.43 goals against average this season. Meanwhile, DavisDrewiske of the Montreal Canadiens cleared waivers Monday and was sent to Hamilton of the AHL. He can hide it with the helmet hell need now that hes back in the race car. Hinchcliffe, from Oakville, Ont., was cleared to drive Thursday by IndyCars medical team following a concussion Saturday in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis.PHILADELPHIA -- There is no secret to Bostons road success. The Bruins play their system and play it well no matter where they play. PatriceBergeron scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and also tallied in the shootout to help Boston to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. The Bruins have won nine straight road games, a single-season club record. "Just being smart, playing the system and not forcing plays," Bergeron said. "Every time we take whats there, we have success." ReillySmith, the fifth Boston shooter, clinched the victory in the shootout for the Bruins, who ended March 15-1-1. "Thats pretty impressive," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Theyve stayed focused, theyve stayed humble, theyve stayed determined. Im very proud of the way weve handled this month." VincentLecavalier scored twice for the Flyers, including the game-tying goal with 25 seconds left in regulation. Lecavaliers first goal was the 400th of his career. "Ive always wanted to have a long career, but you dont come into the league saying, I want a certain amount of goals," Lecavalier said. "You come into the league saying, I want to win the Stanley Cup. I never even thought about 400. Now that it was today I was proud of it, but as a hockey player your goal is to win a Stanley Cup." KimmoTimonen also scored for Philadelphia, which has lost three of four to remain in third place in the Metropolitan Division. "I thought our team competed real hard," Flyers coach CraigBerube said. "They had an attitude today that they were going to show them something and I think they did. I know the outcome wasnt what we wanted, but we attacked and put a lot of pucks at the net." AndrejMeszaros and ZdenoChara also scored, and TuukkaRask made a career-high 49 saves for the Bruins. "They play their system to a T no matter what," Berube said. "They dont vary from it. Theyre a very competitive, heavy team." Bergeron scored to give Boston a 1-0 lead in the shootout and ClaudeGiroux, Philadelphias second shooter, tied it. But no other Flyers shooter scored. The Bruins last road setback came in overtime Feb. 26 at Buffalo, and they havent lost on the road in regulation since a Jan. 9 defeat at Los Angeles. Maurice Jones-Drew Jersey. Lecavalier scored his second goal with 25 seconds left. With goalie SteveMason on the bench, Philadelphia pressed into the Boston zone. JohnnyBoychuk had a chance to clear the zone, but the puck bounced over his stick on a backhand clearing attempt and went right to JakubVoracek. Rask contested Voracek, who passed in front to a wide-open Lecavalier. It looked as if Boston had it won in regulation. Boston erased a one-goal deficit with a pair of second-period goals. Chara scored on the power play 5:44 into the period. JaromeIginla set Chara up for the goal with a pass in front of the net, and Chara wheeled to his backhand and lifted it past Mason to the far side of the net. Bergeron continued his torrid pace with a goal in his seventh straight game, this one with 8:55 left in the period to give the Bruins a 3-2 advantage. Bergeron whirled around from the left circle and his turnaround shot slipped under Masons pads. The Flyers led 2-1 after an action-packed first period. Lecavalier opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game by beating Rask with a slap shot from the point that dipped under Rasks glove. Meszaros, who the Flyers traded to the Bruins at the trade deadline for a conditional third-round pick, tied it just over five minutes later when his wrist shot from the slot got past Mason on the stick side after Philadelphia had trouble clearing the zone. Philadelphias ZacRinaldo raised the excitement level with a hard check on Iginla with just over four minutes left in the period and the players subsequently were penalized for fighting in a one-sided affair in favour of Rinaldo. Timonen gave Philadelphia a one-goal lead with 41.7 seconds left in the period by finishing an cross-ice, back-handed pass from Voracek. Notes: The Bruins won eight straight on the road during the 1971-72 and 1992-93 seasons. . Lecavalier became the 90th player to reach 400 goals. . The Bruins are the only team in the NHL against which the Flyers have a sub-.500 record all-time in Philadelphia. . SteveDownie (upper body injury) missed his fourth straight game for the Flyers. . Boston improved to 2-0 against the Flyers this season, counting a 6-1 win at Philadelphia on Jan. 25. The teams will conclude the regular-season series at 1 p.m. Saturday in Boston. ' ' ' |

The post-Olympic NHL is buzzing with rumors of trade talk between the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning involving some significant pieces Ranger captain RyanCallahan and Lightning captain Marty St. Packers #5 Jersey . Louis. To which I would say two things: 1. Where there is smoke, there is or perhaps has been a little fire. Or, in other words, the two teams would appear to have at least spoken. And spoken is defined as one calling the other to inquire, no more, no less.2. The real question, though, is what is the latest and greatest information. Or, in other words, is this a story that is a couple of weeks old, just now finally coming to light and perhaps outdated? If its the latter, and either Lightning general manager SteveYzerman doesnt intend to trade St. Louis or St. Louis doesnt want to be traded (he has a full No Move Clause), one or both of them may want to put the kaibosh on this story real fast now that theyre back from Sochi. Thats their call, but the Lighting are an Eastern Conference contender and letting this take on a life of its own is going to make for an unsettled week to 10 days leading up to the March 5 trade deadline. Ultimately, the larger issue is where is St. Louiss mindset at right now? Does he want to remain captain of the Lightning? There is reason to believe in the immediate aftermath of his Jan. 7 snub from the Canadian Olympic team, in some form or another, St. Louis indicated to the Bolts he may look favorably on a move out of Tampa. We have to be careful here not to get too hung up on semantics. Was it a trade demand? A trade request? A conversation? Was it St. Louis speaking directly to Yzerman or was it some form of communication between St. Louiss agent Lewis Gross and the organization? While none of the principals were confirming or denying anything in those days and weeks after the initial snub, talk in the NHL community was rife that St. Louis wanted out. There was even talk again, nothing with an absolute confirmation -- that the only place St. Louis would waive his No Move Clause for was the New York Rangers. His off-season home is just outside NYC, in Connecticut. If the NYR or bust account is accurate, it would certainly explain the St. Louis rumors coming out of NYC the last few days and the talk of Callahan for St. Louis. But heres the problem on that front. Tampa, especially now that StevenStamkos is closer to returning, is a potential Eastern contender. St. Louis is a huge part of the Lightning attack and if you take a primary offensive catalyst out of the Bolts lineup now, its difficult to believe it could be accomplished with Ranger captain Callahan coming the other way on an expiring contract. Yzerman would want and need more from the Rangers than that. And as long as we presume the Lightning want to remain a contender in the East this season, trading St. Louis for future considerations or younger, unproven players presents its own set of unique problems in the short term. As for the Rangers, theyre not about to start giving up draft picks, prospects or young players for a 38-year-old. So the Tampa-NYR fit doesnt appear to be there. Even if there were a fit, when its all said and done, nothing happens if St. Louis doesnt want it to happen. His NMC guarantees that. If he feels more strongly about staying in Tampa now that hes played for Team Canada in the Olympics than he may have in the aftermath of the Jan. 7 snub, then the trade stories out of NYC are old news recycled as new. But if St. Louis would look favorably on a move now, even if its only to NYC, then the ball is back squarely in the Lightnings court to decide if theres any desire to oblige him and whether theres even a deal to be made. The way I see it, Yzerman isnt making any move in the short term unless it totally suits his purposes and IF he is contemplating trading St. Louis, it may make as much or more sense to do it in the summer as now. Or maybe St. Louis and the Lightning are going to live happily ever after. If thats the case, theyll no doubt let us know. Or not. In the meantime, well just sit tight to see how this one plays out but it sure seems as though it has way too many moving parts. Packers #76 Jersey . The No. 9-ranked German needed to make a three-foot putt to halve the match and force a playoff against the No. 218-ranked Finch, but it horseshoed out. Kaymer, who won the 2010 U.S. PGA Championship, started the year at No. Packers #2 Jersey .C. -- Vancouver head coach Martin Rennie missed out on an opportunity to beat his old team as the Whitecaps fell 4-2 on penalties to the Carolina Railhawks in pre-season play Sunday.KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Masters champion AdamScott narrowly beat out TigerWoods as the male player of the year in voting by the Golf Writers Association of America. The GWAA takes into account more than just a players performance on the PGA Tour. Scott won four times around the world, none bigger than his playoff victory at Augusta National to become the first Australian in a green jacket. He also won a FedEx Cup playoff event and twice in Australia, and he joined JasonDay to win the portion of the World Cup for Australia at Royal Melbourne. Out of 218 ballots, Scott won by five votes. "It is an honour to be recognized as the most consistent male golfer of 2013 and it is appreciated to have the respect of the Golf Writers of America. Thank you," Scott said from Kapalua, where he is playing in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Woods won five times on the PGA Tour, including The Players Championship and two World Golf Championships, though he went a fifth straight year without winning a major. Woods also won the PGA Tour money title and the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average. Woods won player of the year from the PGA Tour (a vote of players) and PGA of America (based on points). Those awards consider only a players PGA Tour record. The PGA Tour does not disclose vote totals. The other GWAA awards were landslides. Inbee Park, who had three straight majors among her six victories on the LPGA Tour, received 91 per cent of the vote to win female player of the year. Womens British Open champion Stacy Lewis and Evian Championship winner Suzann Pettersen received the other votes. KennyPerry, who won two majors on the Champions Tour and captured the Schwab Cup, also had 91 per cent of the vote for senior player of the year over BernhardLanger and DavidFrost. "It is my highest honour, from the pllayers or the writers, to be named player of the year," Perry said. Packers #42 Jersey. "Here I am at 53 doing stuff I probably shouldnt be doing, so Im honoured that the writers are paying attention to me." They will be honoured April 9 at the annual GWAA Awards Dinner in Augusta, Ga. Scott received 75 votes, or 34 per cent of the vote, compared with 70 votes for Woods. In a season that had so many players accomplish so much, PhilMickelson received 17 per cent, while HenrikStenson got 16 per cent. Mickelson won the British Open for the third leg of the Grand Slam, along with the Phoenix Open and the Scottish Open. Stenson became the first player to win the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai in the same season. Scott played 20 times around the world. Along with his four wins, he had the lead briefly on the back nine of the British Open, where he tied for third, and he tied for fifth in the PGA Championship. Woods had two top 10s in the majors, a tie for fourth at the Masters and a tie for sixth in the British Open. Park rose to No. 1 in the womens world ranking shortly after winning the Kraft Nabisco Championship. She won the LPGA Championship, and then made it three straight majors at the U.S. Womens Open. She failed in her bid to become the first player to win four majors in one season, but still led womens golf with six victories and captured the LPGA Tour money title for the second straight year. "Last year was a year that I could never forget," Park said. "I was able to put my name among the greatest players around the world. Now, on top of that, I am being recognized and honoured by golf writers. They are those who know what has just happened last year in every detail. I can almost say that they know me better than I know myself. Thats why this honour is very special and means a lot to me." ' ' ' |

BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics overcame Detroits dominance inside by passing the ball precisely and protecting it better than they had all season. Chad Rinehart Womens Jersey . RajonRondo had 18 of Bostons season-high 38 assists and the Celtics committed just seven turnovers in a 118-111 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. "When one guy has it going as far as passing the ball, its contagious," said Rondo, who also scored 11 points and didnt turn the ball over. "We scored a bunch of points tonight. We kept on pushing. We played free and just had fun." JeffGreen scored 27 points, KrisHumphries had 20 points and 11 rebounds and KellyOlynyk added 18 points off the bench for the Celtics in their second-highest scoring output of the season. JerrydBayless had 15 points and JaredSullinger 14 for the Celtics, who got at least one assist from every player that entered the game. "I think we do have a pretty unselfish group moving the ball. We missed a couple of extra passes, but not very many," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "Its good to see the body movement and the ball movement. I think weve been pretty active on that end of the floor." JoshSmith had 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons and was one of three Detroit players with double-doubles. AndreDrummond had 18 points and 22 rebounds and GregMonroe finished with 22 points and 14 boards. WillBynum added 18 points off the bench for the Pistons, who have lost seven of eight and 10 of their last 12. "I think that our effort level needs to be a little bit harder," Bynum said. "I think maybe we need to play with a sense of urgency. We are trying to make the playoffs." Detroit controlled the game inside, outrebounding Boston 54-39 and outscoring the Celtics 64-44 in the paint. However, the Pistons committed 16 turnovers and could not cool off the Celtics once they started hitting shots. Boston shot 15 for 22 in the third quarter, including eight 3-pointers, in its highest scoring game since beating Orlando 120-105 on Nov. 11. "Sometimes we close out hoping they miss and I thought down the stretch of the game, we closed out trying to make them miss," Detroit coach John Loyer said. "We dared them to shoot the basketball and they had a very good shooting night, but youve got to adjust as the game goes on and guys are shooting the ball." Boston beat the Pistons for the first time in three meetings this season. Detroit had rallied from 21-points down to win in Boston on Dec. 18, but the Celtics were able to hold off the Pistons each time they rallied down the stretch this time. After going 2 for 14 from 3-point range in the first half, the Celtics made five from beyond-the-arc in the first 6 minutes of the third quarter. Smith pulled Detroit to 69-63 on a 3-pointer with 7:27 left in the period, the Green made back-to-back 3s followed by another from Bayless to stretch Bostons lead to 78-63. The Celtics finished the period with eight 3s and led 95-84 entering the fourth. Monroes three-point play with 9:28 remaining cut Bostons lead to 97-89, then Bynum pulled up for a jumper on a fast break to get the Pistons within six. Detroit stayed within reach and pulled to 113-109 on two free throws by Bynum, but the Pistons had to foul and Humphries sealed it by making two from the line. The Celtics shot 50 per cent in the second quarter and led by 13, but Detroit closed the half on a 9-2 run to pull within 57-49 at the break. NOTES: Drummonds 45 double-doubles are most for a Detroit player since Isiah Thomas had 47 in 1985-86. ... Humphries previous high this season was 19 points. ... Rondo reached 4,101 career assists, passing Bill Russell (4,100) for fifth place in team history. ... Boston finished with just seven turnovers. Ladarius Green Jersey . It was rescheduled for June 2 at 7:05 p.m., which had been an off day for both teams. For the Yankees, that date falls between home series against Minnesota and Oakland.Jarret Johnson Womens Jersey . MatsSundin was the captain.ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- ChrisArcher has done all right for a guy who was cut from his seventh grade team and once told by a coach he would never be good enough to pitch in college, let alone the major leagues. The 25-year-old right-hander not only has a promising future with the Tampa Bay Rays, he will be paid well while trying to reach his potential. "Not making teams, being told I was never going to play college baseball, getting traded twice, and now Im sitting here in this seat where not many people ever get," Archer said Wednesday after finalizing a $25.5 million, six-year contract, the latest long-term deal the Rays have given to one of their young pitchers. "Having the ability to make my parents debt-free is huge for me right now. And just the willingness from the Rays to offer such a contract for somebody with under a year of service time is remarkable," Archer added. "It was definitely something I couldnt say no to. It was a smooth, easy process." The contract includes club options for 2020 and 2021 that could raise the value to $43.75 million. Archer went 9-7 with a 3.22 ERA in 23 starts as a rookie in 2013. Hes scheduled to make his first start of the season Thursday against Toronto. "Its a contract, and its guaranteed money, but I think its just the beginning of six or eight great years," Archer said. Tampa Bay has one of the deepest pitching rotations in baseball, as well as a history of signing its best young players to long-term contract early in their careers. Left-hander MattMoore, a 17-game winner a year ago, signed a $14 million, five-year deal after making just one regular-season start in the majors. Archer gets a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $500,000 this year, $1 million in 2015, $2.75 million in 2016, $4.75 million in 2017, $6.25 million in 2018 and $7.5 million in 2019. The Rays have a $9 million option for 2020 with a $1.75 million buyout, and if that option is exercised they have an $11 million option for 2021 with a $250,000 buyout. Rays executivve vice-president Andrew Friedman said Archer has the talent to "develop into a top-of-the-rotation starter," as well as the work ethic and character off the field to ensure the Rays are making a good investment. Malcom Floyd Womens Jersey. "Its not only important to identify the talent of the player, but also who they are," Friedman said. "As much as were betting on his talent, were betting on who he is, as well." Archer was obtained from the Cubs as part of an eight-player trade that sent MattGarza to Chicago in 2011. The new deal replaces a one-year contract agreed to in February that called for Archer to make $511,200 in the major leagues and $214,222 in the minors. The native of Clayton, N.C., was promoted from Triple-A Durham last June 1 and went on to lead AL rookies making a minimum of 20 starts in ERA, opponents batting average (.226), complete games (two), shutouts (two). He finished third in balloting for AL Rookie of the Year behind Rays outfielder WilMyers and Detroit shortstop JoseIglesias. Talks on the new deal began during spring training. Archer said he consulted with a number of people during the process, including some players whove signed long-term deals early in their career and some who turned it down. "What came from it is never turn your back on your first fortune," said Archer, adding that he feels blessed to be in a position to make sure his parents become debt-free. "At the end of the contract, theres still room to sign another deal or extension or whatever it might be. From where I come from, this is more than I can ever ask for, to be honest." Archer thanked the Rays for trading for him after other organizations gave up on developing him. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2006 and traded to the Cubs in December 2008. "It seems like this was the first team that Ive ever really played for that really believed in me and was willing to wait an extra year or two for me to really turn into what I could possibly be," Archer said. etty good effort." NOTES: India
(Sports Network) - Bostons run to the top of the American League East was pretty amazing given its slow start to the season. Keenan Allen Jersey . It apparently hasnt impressed Chicago very much though. The White Sox will try to post their longest winning streak at Fenway Park in 52 years as they continue a three-game series with the Red Sox this evening. Boston came into yesterdays opener in first place in the AL East and winners in 13 of its past 16 games. However, Chicago denied Red Sox hurler Jon Lester his eighth win of the season by tagging the lefty for seven runs over 5 2/3 innings on the way to a 7-3 victory. The White Sox, who won six of seven versus the Red Sox last year, improved to 11-2 in the past 13 games of this series and have won five straight at Fenway Park for the first time since 1982. They havent won six straight at the historic ballpark since a seven-game run from July 12, 1958-May 14, 1959. Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin both drove in two runs during a four-run sixth inning and Paul Konerko homered to help Chicago snap a three-game slide and improve to 3-5 on a 10-game road trip. Jake Peavy gave up three runs over seven innings to earn the win. It says a lot about this team to come back after a few tough days and grind out a win, Peavy said. Dustin Pedroia knocked in two runs and Adrian Gonzalez had a solo blast for the Red Sox, losers of two straight games after winning five in a row. Lester, meanwhile, lost for the first time since April 12 as the Red Sox fell into a tie with the Yankees for first place. I didnt think he commanded very well. He scattered a lot of pitches, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of his starter. We have to get him back to establishing fastball, changeup, breaking ball and using that cutter to put people away. Gonzalezs homer was his 10th of the season and he is hitting .347 in May with nine homers and 31 RBI. Chicago could see a familiar face in the later innings as Boston is expected to activate Bobby Jenks from the disabled list. Jenks, a former closer for the White Sox, hasnt pitched since May 1 due to a right biceps strain. Bostons Alfredo Aceves has been excellent since injuries to starters Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lackey forced him into the rotation. In two starts, he has allowed just two runs over 11 innings with eight strikeouts. The right-hander got a no-decision in his first start of the season against the Cubs on May 21, but won his seventh career start on Thursday in Detroit. Backed by plenty of offense, Aceves allowed a run on five hits over six innings of a 14-1 triumph. Aceves, 29, is 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA in 13 total appearances this season and 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA in five career games versus the White Sox. He has faced Chicago once before as a starter back in 2008 while with the Yankees. The White Sox will move Philip Humber up a day to pitch tonights game after scheduled starter Gavin Floyd pitched in relief on Saturday. He will go tomorrow instead. The right-handed Humber has thrown at least seven innings in five of his last six starts, including at Toronto on Thursday. He allowed just a run on six hits over 7 2/3 innings, but posted a second straight no-decision in his clubs late 3-1 win. Humber, 28, is 3-3 with a season-best 2.85 ERA in 11 games (nine starts) this year and faces Boston for the first time in his career. Custom Chargers Jersey . Less than 24 hours after posting their highest run total of the season, the Red Sox seek a sweep of a quick two-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. Kellen Clemens Chargers Jersey . Son scored in the 62nd minute, when he let fly from outside the penalty area to send the ball inside the top right corner. Three Gladbach defenders failed to close down the South Korean. ATLANTA -- Its over. This time, the Indiana Pacers had a successful regular-season trip to Atlanta. DavidWest scored 22 points, PaulGeorge added 18 and the NBA-leading Pacers beat the Hawks 89-85 on Tuesday night. "This has been a tough place for us, but I thought we came in with the right motivation tonight," West said. "They blitzed us the last time we were down here." The Pacers most recent win in Atlanta came last May in the clinching Game 6 of their first-round playoff series. But Indiana (38-10) had dropped its last 12 regular-season games at the Hawks, including a 97-87 decision on Jan. 8. "I dont have to answer questions about it anymore, so thats good," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "Weve had some struggles here, but its not anything we were losing sleep over." Atlanta (25-22) failed to place a starter in double figures. It had won two straight and five of seven. JeffTeague and KyleKorver had nine points apiece for the Hawks. All-Star forward PaulMillsap went 2 for 11 from the field and finished with seven points. Teague made a 3-pointer to give Atlanta a 41-35 lead with 1:06 left in the second quarter, but the Hawks were outscored 38-16 over the next 17 minutes. CartierMartins 3 cut Indianas lead to 86-84 with 14.9 seconds left. C.J.Watson and DannyGranger then combined for three free throws to help the Pacers hold on for the win. "Offensively, it just wasnt one of our better nights," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "I think you have to give Indiana and their defence credit for that." EltonBrand, a 14-year veteran, had 12 points and was the only Hawk to score in double figures before MikeScott scored nine oof his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Vincent Brown Chargers Jersey. Scott said its no surprise that Atlantas offence couldnt get much going against a defence that holds opponents to just 90.2 points a game, lowest in the NBA. "Theyre very good," Scott said. "Thats why theyre the best team in the league defensively. We just missed open shots and couldnt get it in." The Pacers had not won in the regular season at Philips Arena since Dec. 22, 2006. "I thought our resolve took over," West said. "We were really precise with our movement and what we wanted to do. And we made plays when we needed to make plays." IanMahinmi gave Indiana its biggest lead of the game with a tip-in that made it 73-57 with 8:10 left. Pacers guard LanceStephenson hit the floor hard on a layup at the 7:56 mark of the third, falling over Millsap in the lane and landing on his left shoulder and hip. Stephenson then converted the three-point play to make it 55-47, but he sat out the last 16 minutes. George stole the ball from rookie point guard DennisSchroder late in the fourth and scored a fast-break layup to make it 82-74. "Our guys buckled down on the defensive end," Vogel said. "(Atlanta) made a few shots in the last minute or two, but for the most part we held a pretty explosive team down to 85 points. Thats a pretty good effort." NOTES: Indiana improved to 23-0 when holding opponents under 90 points. ... The Pacers are 10-3 since the loss in Atlanta on Jan. 8. ... Korver extended his NBA record to 116 consecutive games with a 3-pointer. Korver began his streak last season in Atlantas second game -- a win at Oklahoma City. ... The Pacers are 15-8 on the road, best in the Eastern Conference. ' ' ' |

lled for illegal contact,
MILAN -- The highlight of this weekends Serie A matches is undoubtedly Inter Milans visit to Juventus in what is sure to be a heated derby dItalia match. Jacoby Ford . There is also the Genoa derby on Sunday, while second-place Roma hosts Parma looking to take advantage of any more slip-ups from Juventus. Here are five things to know about the Italian league ahead of this weekends matches: LLORENTE ON SONGThe last time Juventus hosted Inter Milan the visitors ended the Bianconeris impressive streak of 49 games unbeaten with a 3-1 victory. Inter cannot stop Juventus pursuit of a record this time after the two-time defending Serie A champion was held to a 1-1 draw at Lazio last weekend, ending its run of consecutive wins at 12 five short of Inters record. Fernando Llorente scored his fifth goal in six matches last week as he continues to impress following a difficult start to the season after his transfer from Athletic Bilbao. "At first it was a new way of working for me and I needed a bit of time," Llorente said. "But slowly, slowly you get used to it, improve and get on the same wavelength as your teammates. "It was an important change for me, leaving my home country and coming to a new city and new environment. ... Now, however, Im enjoying one of the best moments of my career." DERBY DITALIA SPICEMatches between Juventus and Inter Milan are known as the derby dItalia Italys derby and are normally a heated affair. However, there will be extra spice to this weekends match after the collapse of a swap deal involving Inters Fredy Guarin and Juventus Mirko Vucinic. Everything had been agreed between the two clubs and Vucinic had cleared his locker and bid his teammates farewell before Inter president Erick Thohir pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute. Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta launched an angry tirade at Inters "lack of respect" following the decision and it has left the Milan club looking shambolic in its transfer dealings. FREE-SCORING ROMASecond-place Roma will be hoping to close the gap on Juventus still further this weekend when it hosts Parma on Sunday. Roma beat Hellas Verona 3-1 last weekend to move six points behind Antonio Contes side. The capital side has been in impressive form of late, scoring 10 goals and conceded just one in winning its past three league matches, and also knocked Juventus out of the Italian Cup. "Is the title race re-opened? I hope so," Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. "Juve isnt unbeatable but its a very strong team as it already has 56 points from 21 games. Their points tally so far is incredible. "It doesnt just depend on us: well do what we have to do, and if they start to slip up we have to be ready to start cutting back the deficit." TWO-HORSE RACE?Napoli lost more ground in the title race as it looks increasingly like being a two-horse battle for the scudetto. Rafa Benitezs team was held to a 1-1 draw at home by relegation-threatened Chievo Verona. It was Napolis second successive draw and left it 12 points behind Juventus and six behind Roma. However, it knocked out holder Lazio in the Italian Cup on Wednesday to progress to the semifinals and it is also in the Europa League, after being eliminated from the Champions League. "We have been involved in Europe and will be again, but we have a talented roster and we will try to do our best on all three fronts," Benitez said. Napoli visits Atalanta on Sunday. NEW-LOOK MILANAC Milan has been busy this January as it attempts to turn its season around. Clarence Seedorf has won his first two league matches in charge after replacing Massimiliano Allegri, while the club has also been active in the transfer market, with Adel Taarabt set to join fellow new signings Keisuke Honda, Adil Rami and Michael Essien. "I am honoured to be able to play at the best club in the world," Taarabt said. "I spoke with Seedorf and we are both happy. I am an attacker and I like to play behind the strikers. "I do not know (Mario) Balotelli personally, but I know very well who he is and I am pleased to be able to play with him." Milan hosts Torino on Saturday. Willie Colon . -- JoakimNoah had a season-high 26 points, CarlosBoozer scored 23, and the Chicago Bulls held on to beat the Orlando Magic 128-125 in triple-overtime on Wednesday night. Ellis Lankster . Duchene scored two goals and had an assist, helping the Colorado Avalanche beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 on Friday night to match the best 10-game start in team history. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- TomBrady finally got plenty of help -- from a running back who nobody drafted and a defence that everybody exploited. The New England Patriots used their most complete game of the season to beat the New York Jets 30-21 on Sunday in the latest renewal of their fierce rivalry. BenJarvusGreen-Ellis rushed for a career-high 136 yards and two touchdowns, the Patriots allowed a season-low 255 and Brady threw for 321 after starting the day with an NFL-best 388 yards passing per game. "Obviously, our passing game has been unreal," said Green-Ellis, signed in 2008 as a rookie free agent from Mississippi, "so we want to be an offence that can be able to do whatever we want to do, run or pass, and complement our defence." The Patriots (4-1) never trailed and won their 19th straight regular-season game at home. The Jets (2-3) lost their third straight. "I never thought wed have a three-game losing streak like this," quarterback MarkSanchez said. "Its just frustrating." The Patriots had allowed an average of 477.5 yards, the most in the league. But they held Sanchez to 16 completions in 26 attempts for 166 yards and two touchdowns one week after he threw for just 119 yards in a 34-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. "I think every week weve been getting better and better and better (defensively) and today was a good day to get back on track," defensive tackle VinceWilfork said. And they did it without star linebacker JerodMayo, sidelined for the first time this season with a serious knee sprain. "You cant fill his shoes. Hes a playmaker," Patriots safety JamesIhedigbo said, "GaryGuyton and BrandonSpikes did a great job of communicating (in place of Mayo) and we played like a unit." In the most recent meeting of the rivalry, Sanchez outplayed Brady in New Yorks 28-21 playoff win on Jan. 16. But the crowd was unusually subdued throughout the first half Sunday, perhaps because of the lacklustre play that included six penalties by each team. Few players referred to the rivalry after the game. Brady had another strong game, completing 24 of 33 passes for one touchdown and one interception as the Patriots scored at least 30 points for the 13th straight regular-season game. "Obviously, theyre the better team right now," said Jets coach Rex Ryan, his usual bravado missing. "Against New England, youve got to get off the field. They did a great job sustaining drives. Youve got to give them all the credit. They earned it." New England scored the first 10 points and led 10-7 at halftime. The Jets staged a comeback after falling behind 27-14, marching 85 yards to a 21-yard scoring pass from Sanchez to SantonioHolmes. Sanchez was 5 for 6 on the drive for 65 yards -- more than 40 per cent of his total for the game. But the Patriots came right back, holding tthe ball for 6:12 and scoring with 1:02 remaining on StephenGostkowskis 28-yard field goal, his third of the game. Calvin Pace. On the first play of the third quarter, Brady and WesWelker connected for a 73-yard gain. Three plays later, a wide-open DeionBranch caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Brady on the left side of the end zone. "I took my eyes off of him," cornerback AntonioCromartie said. "I took one peep. As soon as I peeped, he went the opposite way. Thats all on me." The Jets struck right back when JoeMcKnight returned the kickoff 88 yards one week after scoring on a 107-yard kickoff return. New York needed just three plays to reach the end zone on a three-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez to JeremyKerley, cutting the lead to 17-14. Green-Ellis, who had 27 carries, then scored his second three-yard touchdown with 1:20 left in the third quarter, and Gostkowski added a 24-yard field goal with 12:57 to go in the game. The news comes amidst other reports thatthe Senators have beensearching for a winger to play with him. However, general manager Bryan Murray says he has not talked about the 30-year-old centre. "I had one guy ask if I want to comment to quiet the rumours and I said, No. Im not going to ... The more I say about it the more its going to be played over and over in the next couple of days," Murray told reporters in Vancouver, where the Senators beat the Canucks 4-2 inthe Heritage Classic on Sunday."Ill just say we have not talked, at this point in time, about JasonSpezza." Spezza, who was named captain last fall after the departure of free agent DanielAlfredsson, has one year remaining on his current deal which pays him $4 million next season - but with a $7 million cap hit. "I think he has made us better," United manager David Moyes said. Saints #23 Jersey . Third-place Napoli remained three points ahead of Fiorentina, which won 2-0. The Swedes looked like they were on their way to an upset when they scored goals 20 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead early in the second period. But Canada responded and was spared blushes as Natalie Spooner scored two straight goals, setting up Heffords winner. "We really dont feel like we played our game very well today and there was a bit of a struggle throughout," Hefford said. "But sometimes games are like that. You have to grind them out and chip away, and thats how we looked at it." Canada finished the round-robin portion of the tournament with a 3-0 record and advanced to Saturdays final against Finland (2-1), which stunned the United States 3-1. Meghan Agosta-Marciano also scored for Canada, while Shannon Szabados made eight saves on 11 shots. Sweden goaltender Valentina Wallner was outstanding, making 41 saves on 45 shots. Anna Borgqvist, Jenni Asserholt and Lina Backlin scored for Sweden, which finished the tournament 0-3. Canada brrought a younger squad to the Four Nations tournament, leaving several veterans, including talismanic leading scorer Hayley Wickenhiser, off the roster for a rest. Saints #8 Jersey. Coach Dan Church said he welcomes the way the young squad battled through adversity. "Coming out and struggling in the first two periods today wasnt part of our game plan," Church said. "But the response form our group was good in the third period. "The young players have really worked hard over these last three games and that is what you want to see. Leaving some veterans at home is an opportunity for them to step up and play some more minutes and show some leadership." Noora Raty made 58 saves and Karolina Rantamaki and Susanna Tapani scored in a 9-second span in the second period to help Finland defeat the U.S. for the first time in the history of the tournament Megan Bozek had a power-play goal for the U.S. (1-2) in the second period to cut it to 2-1, and Tapani set up Jenni Hiirikoskis goal midway through the third period.
