NEW ORLEANS -- AnthonyDavis is getting even better while the New Orleans Pelicans close out another difficult season. Saints Drew Brees Youth Jersey . Davis set career highs with 40 points and 21 rebounds, and EricGordon made two crucial free throws in overtime to lead the Pelicans to a 121-120 overtime victory over the Boston Celtics on Sunday night. "My teammates tell me that they feed off my energy and they want me to be great so I cant be timid and do what it takes to help my team win," said Davis, who also blocked three shots, making him the eight player in NBA history with at least 40 points, 20 rebounds and three blocks in a game. "Were trying to do a better job of making me comfortable down the stretch." TyrekeEvans added 26 points and Gordon had 19 for the Pelicans (27-39), who had lost two consecutive games. Gordons foul shots with 9.4 seconds remaining gave the Pelicans a 121-117 lead. "In overtime we did enough to squeak out a one-point win," Pelicans coach MontyWilliams said. JeffGreen, who led Boston with 39 points, answered Gordons free throws in overtime with a three-point play that trimmed New Orleans lead to 121-120 with 5.7 seconds remaining. But the Celtics were unable to foul on the inbounds play and New Orleans ran out the clock. "At least we played with better poise at the end of regulation and overtime," said Celtics coach Brad Stevens, who blamed a defensive miscommunication for Boston not committing the late foul. "We gave ourselves a chance to win on the offensive end. Guys got a couple of stops, just not enough at the end." Davis did not score in overtime but controlled the middle by grabbing six rebounds. He became the first player in franchise history to have at least 40 points and 20 rebounds in a game. He is averaging 32.3 points in his last six games. His previous high for points was Friday night when he scored 36 in a loss against Portland. Davis 21 rebounds erased his previous career high of 19 against Orlando on Jan. 26. "I think he can do this 10 to 15 times a year just because he is so gifted and does things for the right reason," Williams said. "Obviously, he has great athletic ability but some of that stuff is just him. We try to put him in a position where he can be a dominant player." Green made three big free throws late in regulation, tying it at 110. Davis answered with a jumper for New Orleans, but KrisHumphries, who scored 16 points, sent the game into overtime on a long jumper from the right corner. "Thats a tough one to swallow," said Celtics forward JaredSullinger, who scored 14 points. "(Humphries) hitting that big shot to send it into overtime, we thought we could win. In the end we came up short." AveryBradley had 12 points for the Celtics, who lost their fourth consecutive game. Evans layup with 5:33 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Pelicans a 102-89 lead. Boston then closed with a 23-10 surge to force the extra period. It was similar to the past two games when the Pelicans blew leads against Memphis and Portland. "We played defence in the fourth quarter and in overtime and got stops when we needed it," Davis said. "We came up with the rebounds and made free throws." The Celtics, who attempted to push the pace against the defence-minded Pelicans, closed the first half on a 17-8 run to take a 64-57 halftime lead. Boston scored 39 points in the second period. Green had 20 points at the break. He had a tying dunk with 4:11 left and a 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining, giving Boston a 54-49 lead. NOTES: The Pelicans finished 24 of 28 from the free-throw line, after making their only two foul shots in the first half. ... Davis was 12 of 12 from the line, and has not missed an attempt in his past three games. ... The Pelicans have won their past five games that have gone into overtime. ... New Orleans scored a season-high 70 points in the paint, and held Boston to 46. EAST RUTHERFORD, N. Ryan Allen Jersey .J. -- The New York Giants have signed quarterback RustySmith, who played the last four seasons with the Tennessee Titans. A backup for the Titans, Smith played in only three regular-season games with one start. He has not gotten on the field since 2012. Smith has completed 23 of 45 passes for 234 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions. He is the fifth quarterback on New Yorks roster, joining starter EliManning, 2013 backups CurtisPainter and RyanNassib, and JoshFreeman, who was signed last week. Manning had arthroscopic ankle surgery earlier this month and is sidelined for another few weeks. Painter underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last Friday and recovery time is approximately four weeks. Rob Ninkovich Womens Jersey ." Thornton went after Orpik during a stoppage in play a week ago, slew-footing him to the ice and punching him twice in the head. Orpik suffered a concussion and was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to the hospital. Ryan Wendell Womens Jersey . The Canadian mens team fell to South Africa 24-7, Kenya 24-12, and Spain 26-12 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. "To make those mistakes was disappointing and now we must pick ourselves up and turn up tomorrow," said head coach Geraint John.LONDON -- Growing up, Demba Ba dreamed about scoring big goals for Paris Saint-Germain. With the team he supported as a child on the verge of reaching the Champions League semifinals for the first time in 19 years, Ba instead scored the goal that knocked them out. Now it is Chelsea joining European footballs elite in the last four for the seventh time in 11 years. Ba seemed the most improbable player to complete Chelseas comeback, having been largely overlooked by Jose Mourinho for much of this season, but he delivered from the bench when it mattered most for the 2012 European champions. Bas sixth goal of the season in the 87th minute, after Andre Schuerrles first-half opener, clinched a 2-0 victory that overturned a 3-1 loss from the first leg and sent Chelsea through on away goals. "It happened so quickly," Ba said. "I was on the floor, just looked at the goal, and I saw the ball was in the net. It was a big joy for everyone. I just do what I have to do when I get chances. I havent had many this season." Mourinho was elated, sprinting from the bench to join his celebrating players, who collapsed in a heap on the pitch. "It was not to celebrate -- it was to tell the players how we have to play," Mourinho said. "But you could see that I can still run." And Mourinho is still a winner -- a decade after the Portugueses memorable dash down the Old Trafford touchline in a game against Manchester United during his Porto sides run to the Champions League title. Now Mourinho, having failed to bring the European Cup to Chelsea during his 2004-07 stint in charge, remains on course to win the competition in his first season back at Stamford Bridge, while the team is also second in the Premier League. Joining Chelsea in draw on Friday is Real Madrid, which lost 2-0 at Borussia Dortmund but still went through 3-2 on aggregate. On Wednesday, Bayern Munich hosts Manchester United, and Barcelona takes on Atletico Madrid after both first legs ended 1-1. For PSGs Qatari owners its another season of heartbreak in Europe -- a victim of the away-goals rule in the quarterfinals just as the team was against Barcelona last year -- but the French title is close to be successsfully defended. Tavon Wilson Womens Jersey. This was a night when PSG needed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but he was injured in the first leg. Edinson Cavani was relied on for goals but fluffed his chances as Chelsea extended its run without conceding at fortress Stamford Bridge to nine games in all competitions. In a lively start, a menacing cross from Maxwell was sent to the feet of Cavani, but Petr Cech saved at the strikers feet. What seemed to be an early setback for Chelsea proved fortuitous, with Schuerrle replacing the injured Eden Hazard after just 18 minutes and scoring in the 32nd. Branislav Ivanovic launched the ball in from the right, and it was flicked on by David Luiz. Left completely unmarked, Schuerrle had the time and space to calmly dispatch the ball into the net. Until that point, goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu had only had two serious saves to make, from Frank Lampards free kick and Luizs long-range strike. But, even though Chelseas play was far from incisive or flowing, now the hosts had hope. The crossbar thwarted them twice within two minutes at the start of the second half: first from Schuerrles curling shot and then from Oscars free kick. Mourinho beefed up the strike force in the 66th, bringing Ba on to support the ineffective Samuel Etoo up front. PSGs progress could have been sealed in the 78th when Yohan Cabaye launched the ball forward to Cavani, who missed the target with only Cech to beat. "We had the chance to score and we didnt, so we paid the price for it," PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi said. With 10 minutes left to keep Chelsea in Europe, Mourinho brought on the third member of his strike force, with out-of-favour Fernando Torres replacing Oscar. Soon, the strikers that Mourinho had criticized in recent weeks were celebrating. An initial shot by Etoo ricocheted to Cesar Azipilicueta. The defenders shot found its way through the visiting defence, and Ba beat Maxwell to the ball -- sweeping it past Sirigu with a left-footed shot from the top of the six-yard box. "In the second half, Chelsea was a lot better and we lacked a bit of fluidity," PSG manager Laurent Blanc said. "But Chelsea believed until the end and they were rewarded." ' ' ' |

Fiorentina boosted its hopes of a Champions League spot as it ground out a 2-0 win at home against Atalanta in Serie A on Saturday. Saints Archie Manning Elite Jersey . Josip Ilicic broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when he curled a superb free kick into the near top right corner from 25 metres. Atalantas hopes of getting anything from the match all but evaporated when it was reduced to 10 men nine minutes from time following Luca Cigarinis second booking. Substitute Rafal Wolski sealed the match in the 86th, racing almost half the length of the pitch and holding off defenders before firing across into the bottom left corner for his first Serie A goal. Fiorentina moved level with third-placed Napoli, which hosted AC Milan late. Udinese beat Chievo Verona 3-0 in a relegation battle. Udinese had lost four of its past five Serie A matches, while Chievo was without a win in its past seven, scoring only four goals during that period. Chievo almost took the lead on the half hour when Cyril Thereaus back-heeled effort crashed off the base of the upright. Udinese went in front in the 56th when Antonio Di Natale brought down Dusan Bastas pass and volleyed across into the bottom left corner for his third goal in as many matches. Substitute Bruno Fernandes tapped home Roberto Pereyras cross in the 74th and Emmanuel Badu added a third shortly before fulltime. Udinese moved provisionally nine points clear of the relegation zone and eight points ahead of Chievo.http://www.saintsstore.us.com/Black-32-Kenny-Vaccaro-Womens-Jersey/ . Bills GM Doug Whaley proved to be bold, trading up five spots to get one of the four real blue-chip players in the draft, Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins at No. 4 overall. The problem is they gave up a ton to do it, surrendering next years first-round pick to Cleveland in order to jump up five spots. "You have a young quarterback in EJManuel; a talented kid. Now they want to surround him with a weapon, and they went and the premier wide receiver in this draft," NFL Draft analyst Mike Mayock said. Saints Brandin Cooks Jersey . Johns a tough opponent, even if the Red Storm dont get a win to show for it.VANCOUVER - Kadeisha Buchanan impressed in her last outing for Canada and she will likely get another chance when the womens national team takes the field next week. The 18-year-old from Toronto was named to Canadas roster for a friendly on June 18 against Germany after the defender scored her first goal for her country in last months 1-1 draw with the United States in Winnipeg. There are only a handful of changes to the Canadian squad that suited up that night as veteran defenders Emily Zurrer and Marie-Eve Nault make their return along with forward Christina Julien. The game in Vancouver against Germany is part of Canadas preparations as the host country for next years womens World Cup. "If you want to win a World Cup at home, youre going to have to beat these teams. Youre going to find them on your road to the finals somewhere," Canadian head coach John Herdman said in a release. "The more we can learn about those teams and learn about ourselves with those teams, its only going to put us in better stead. Saints Drew Brees White Jersey. " Germany, which is ranked second in the world behind the U.S., beat Canada 1-0 last year in another friendly. "When we played them in Germany we had an experimental squad with a different way of playing," said Herdman, whose team is ranked seventh. "We were developing and this year were trying to improve and to get closer to where its going to look like when were in a World Cup." The Canadian roster that will try to beat the Germans for the first time also includes: goalkeepers Karina LeBlanc and Erin McLeod; defenders Robyn Gayle, Carmelina Moscato, Rebecca Quinn, Rhian Wilkinson and Sura Yekka; midfielders Kaylyn Kyle, Diana Matheson, Sophie Schmidt, Desiree Scott, Jessie Fleming, Ashley Lawrence and Brittany Baxter; and forwards Jonelle Filigno, Adriana Leon, Christine Sinclair and Josee Belanger. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have designated linebacker JasonWorilds as the teams transition player for 2014. Dan Koppen . Worilds was set to become a free agent next week, but now the Steelers will have five days to match any offer he receives. Free agency begins March 11. The transition tag for linebackers is $9.754 million. Worilds was drafted in the second round (52nd overall) in 2010 out of Virginia Tech. Hes started 21 of 57 regular-season games in which hes played and has 121 tackles (90 solo), 18 sacks and three forced fumbles. Last season he set career highs in starts (11), tackles (54), sacks (8) and forced fumbles (2). Pittsburgh is nearly $6 million over the salary cap of $133 million that goes into effect next week. Malik Jackson .Y. -- High hopes have given way to high anxiety in New York.Chris Clark . "We dont have any right, yet, to overlook anyone," Casey said after the Raptors defeated the lowly Milwaukee Bucks 116-94 at Air Canada Centre on Monday night. "This is a tough league and were still building, were still getting there, so I cant allow our guys to have that in their thought process. When the Senators stumbled out of the gate with a slow start this season, much of the blame was directed at the clubs inconsistent goaltending. In particular, CraigAnderson was singled out for not playing as well as he did during the 2012-13 campaign, when many suggested he was the best goalie in the league before he suffered an ankle injury partway through the lockout-shortened campaign. Anderson really struggled in November, winning just two of his seven starts and posting a 4.00 GAA and a .866 save percentage. He lost a grip on his job as the No. 1 goaltender, as he was alternating starts with RobinLehner for a good portion of December. But then suddenly, Anderson re-discovered his game in the past couple of weeks and heading into Wednesdays game in Denver, the netminder had reeled off five consecutive victories. However, we shouldnt be too surprised that Anderson is heating up as the calendar flips to January, because his career numbers have always been better in the second half of the season. A look at Andersons career splits by the month, illustrates a goalie who often comes out slow and then catches fire: MONTH GP SAVE PCT. GAA October 47 .913 2.90 November 51 .902 3.09 December 62 .904 3.00 January 58 .925 2.37 February 50 .922 2.64 March 50 .918 2.78 April 29 .916 2.43 In his breakout season with the Avalanche in 2009-10, he posted a .897 save percentage and a 3.19 GAA in 12 starts in the month of November. But when January rolled around, Anderson had a .946 save percentage and a 1.72 GAA andd rode that momentum down the stretch where he was the biggest reason why the Avalanche made the playoffs. Chris Kuper. In Andersons first season with the Senators, this pattern continued as he came out with save percentages of .881, .903 and .907 in the first three months of the season. But then a switch was flipped in January and he went 8-5-1 with a .933 save percentage and a 2.24 GAA. Those strong numbers down the stretch continued with the exception of a brief hiccup because of a sliced finger and the Senators ended up making the playoffs. Andersons dominance in January extended to last season even though there was a lockout that meant the first three months of the season were wiped out. He went 5-0-1 with a .967 save percentage and a 0.99 GAA to start the season, further cementing the fact that January is his favourite month no matter when the NHL season starts. A look at Andersons career save percentage in the month of January reveals that he is ahead of all other goalies in the Eastern Conference: CAREER JANUARY SAVE PERCENTAGE (MIN. 25 GP) GOALIE SAVE PCT. CraigAnderson .925 RyanMiller .922 JimmyHoward .921 TimThomas .921 HenrikLundqvist .920 MartinBrodeur .917 CamWard .914 TuukkaRask .913 Marc-AndreFleury .910 CareyPrice .908 If Andersons career pattern continues again this season, the Senators will have an excellent chance of making the post-season. And in all likelihood, Anderson will re-establish himself as the clubs No. 1 netminder for the stretch drive. ' ' ' |

CarmeloAnthony had previously said he planned to opt out of his contract with the New York Knicks and reportedly will do just that on Monday. Chris Johnson . Anthony has a June 23 deadline to make that decision and Yahoo Sports cited a source in a report Sunday that said the seven-time All-Star will notify the Knicks of his intention to exercise that right and become a free agent. The 30-year-old veteran, in past comments, said he wouldnt rule out a return to the Knicks, adding that he just wanted to test the market. Teams reportedly interested in Anthony include the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets. The Knicks, however, can offer Anthony the most money and longest contract. New Knicks president Phil Jackson, however, has indicated that he would like Anthony to take less money in an effort to rebuild a team that missed the playoffs in 2013-14. Anthony averaged 27.4 points, a career-high 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 77 games for the Knicks this past season. He sat out the final two games with a shoulder injury once the Knicks were eliminated from postseason contention. In three-plus seasons since joining the Knicks in a February 2011 trade from Denver, Anthony has averaged 26.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists. "You cant win with JasonSpezza as your captain. Saints Jimmy Graham Limited Jersey ."I have heard that phrase uttered countless times over the past few months, as the Ottawa Senators season has slipped away. In his first season as captain, Spezzas club has been a major disappointment. The Senators fell well short of expectations and predictably, Spezza is taking the lions share of the blame from his harshest critics. I have always said that the Spezza debate in this town is like Coke versus Pepsi. If you are a Coke drinker, its very hard to convince you that Pepsi is superior. The same goes for Spezza - those people who hate him cant be convinced otherwise. Its a black-and-white argument and its virtually impossible to sway someone from one side to the other.Anybody who has read or listened to me over the years knows that I fall into the camp of people who believe the Senators are a better team with Spezza down the middle. But in todays blog, I am not trying to convince anybody about Jasons ability as a player. You can judge that for yourself. What I do want to bring up is the idea that a captain is the person who sets the tone for how his team plays. The critics of Spezza will argue that because he has a penchant for turning over the puck and does not play as well defensively as some other players, he causes his entire team to play with a loosey-goosey mentality. If the guy wearing the "C" is taking risks with the puck, that is setting the tone for the 17 other skaters. Those people say that if Spezza was a real leader, he would play the game the right way in all three zones. He would be a rugged leader, who was more physical. He would be someone like AndrewLadd of the Winnipeg Jets.If you were to write down all the characteristics you would want in a captain for a Canadian team, Ladd would meet all the criteria. He is from Maple Ridge, B.C. He plays the game the right way He has Stanley Cup rings with two different teamsAnd yet, the Winnipeg Jets are a team that is a mess defensively. They have given up 234 goals second-worst in the Western Conference.Their captain is there every night supposedly playing the game "the right way". His teammates see how he conducts himself on and off the ice. So why are they so bad defensively? Its because the captain can only do so much. And many times, we overrate the role of a captain on a hockey team. We assign certain characteristics to people and we have a hard time deviating from our original stance. In our minds, Ladd is a great captain so the problem is with his Winnipeg teammates. But if Ladd escapes the criticism in Winnipeg for failing to get the Jets to play a more structured game, why does Spezza take the heat in Ottawa for the exact same thing? The tricky thing for Spezza is that he is also trying to fill the skates of the previous captain DanielAlfredsson, who had a mythical status in this town. But before Alfredsson had his breakthrough moment as captain in 2007 in leading the Senators to the Stanley Cup Final, he had just as many detractors in Ottawa as Spezza does now. There was a prevailing sentiment that "you will never win with DanielAlfredsson as your captain." Those echoes reached a crescendo when JasonPominville walked around him for the series-ending goal against the Buffalo Sabres in the 2006 playoffs. However, after Alfredsson won over his critics in 2007, he was good for life in Ottawa and was never blamed for any of the problems. When it comes to the team that fell off a cliff in 2007-08 with one of the great collapses in NHL history?"Dont blame Alfredsson, that was all RayEmerys fault."How about the team that missed the playoffs in two of the next three years?"Lets blame Hartsburg and Cory Clouston. Alfie is a great leader."When the Senators made the playoffs in 2011-12, they did so with the worst goals-against average of any of the 16 teams to qualify for the playoffs. They were kind of a mess defensively that year, but did anybody blame Alfredsson?Of course not.Because they had made up their minds that he was not the problem. Being the captain is all about perception. Alfredsson was always a good leader in Ottawa. He didnt radically change his approach in 2007 when they went to the Stanley Cup Final. Things just finally worked out in his favour and as a result, all of the questions surrounding his leadership vanished overnight.Spezza probably needs time to grow into the captaincy in this town, so he can experience his own defining moment as the leader of this hockey team.Whether he gets that opportunity or not is an entirely different question. Saints Drew Brees Youth Jersey . The Anaheim Ducks left-winger got his revenge in the shootout. Ryan scored the only goal in the shootout, lifting the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers in the teams matchup in Europe on Saturday. Saints Jimmy Graham Pro Bowl Jersey.Y. -- CarmeloAnthony is unlikely to play Sunday against Dallas but J. RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks have called a news conference for Friday morning amid a report they have reached a contract extension with coach Pete Carroll. NFL Network reported Thursday night, citing a "source," that Carroll and the Seahawks had reached agreement on a contract extension. Carrolls original five-year deal with Seattle was set to expire after the 2014 season. The Seahawks announcement did not specify the nature of the news conference and team officials would not confirm the report of an extension for Carroll. Carroll reached the top of the NFL last season, leading the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl title. Lured away from USC in 2010 with the chance at complete control over the football operations, Carroll tore down then rebuilt the Seahawks roster into one of the best in the NFL. Hes 38-26 in four regular seasons with Seattle and 5-2 in the playoffs. Carroll has made competition the benchmark of his time in Seattle. Its why quarterback RussellWilson and cornerback RichardSherman have become stars -- because they were given opportunities in Carrolls system. Carroll, 62, is the second oldest coach in the NFL, but rarely appears his age. He came to Seattle because of the chance he didnt have in his two previous stops as an NFL head coach: control. Seattle gave him the reins to the franchise, and hired him before adding general manager John Schneider to the mix, a relationship that has been marked by stability and success. Carroll lacked control in his previous positions with New England and the New York Jets. But after a decade of winnning with the Trojans and having that control, it was something Carroll demanded if he was going to get back into the professional ranks and the Seahawks were willing. http://www.saintsstore.us.com/9-nike-elite-drew-brees-womens-jersey-nfl-new-orleans-saints-sweetheart-pink.html. Seattle also let Carroll imprint his attitude on the locker room. He wanted a fun atmosphere filled with accountability. Competition was at the crux of everything Carroll did from the day he inherited a 5-11 team. Carroll took Seattle to the playoffs in his first season despite a 7-9 regular season record. The Seahawks plateaued in 2011 going 7-9 again but took a jump in 2012 after drafting Wilson. The Seahawks went 11-5 in the regular season and reached the divisional round of the playoffs. The roster turnover had been completed and there were massive expectations going into 2013. Seattle matched and surpassed those expectations. Carroll guided Seattle to 13 wins in the regular season, the NFC West title and home-field advantage in the playoffs. Seattle knocked off New Orleans in the divisional round, then edged San Francisco in the NFC title game to reach its second Super Bowl. At the Super Bowl, Carroll got to celebrate the way he did watching USCs run of dominance in the mid-2000s. Seattles defence stifled the highest scoring offence in NFL history, humbling Denver in a 43-8 beating to give Seattle its first title. After the season Carroll sounded as if he was locked in to a long future with the Seahawks. "Were trying to do something really good for a really long time and we want to see how far we can go and someday, we look back and see what we accomplished," Carroll said. ' ' ' |

ORCHARD PARK, N. Marquette King Raiders Jersey .Y. -- MattFlynn is getting his latest chance at a fresh start, this time in Buffalo on a team that has spent the past week scrambling to shore up its injury-depleted quarterback position. A week after being cut by Oakland, Flynn signed with the Bills on Monday after spending the morning working out for general manager Doug Whaley, coach Doug Marrone and his offensive staff. The sixth-year NFL player is now on his third team since December; the Raiders acquired him in a trade with Seattle this past off-season. "Im happy Im getting a fresh start," Flynn said. "Im happy Im getting this opportunity with the Bills, and Im excited about it. And hopefully it works out." Flynns signing marks the latest in a series of quarterback moves the Bills have made since rookie starter EJManuel sprained his right knee in a 37-24 loss to Cleveland on Oct. 3. In the previous eight days alone, the Bills promoted ThadLewis from their practice squad to take over as interim starter. They worked out free agents DennisDixon and PatWhite before signing Dixon to the practice squad. And Buffalo failed in a bid to land former Tampa Bay starter JoshFreeman, who instead signed with Minnesota. Despite Flynns addition, Marrone intends to stick with Lewis as his starter Sunday, when Buffalo (2-4) travels to play Miami (3-2). Lewis gets the nod after he made a solid debut overcoming a sprained right foot and a 14-point deficit by throwing two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 27-24 overtime loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. Marrone added that Lewis is expected to practice Wednesday after tests confirmed the injury to his foot is not serious. Flynn will be initially groomed to serve as Lewis backup ahead of undrafted rookie JeffTuel, who struggled filling in for Manuel against Cleveland. Marrone also provided an encouraging update on Manuels status, saying the rookie is "ahead of schedule" and has been cleared to begin rehabbing as early as Tuesday. Marrone cautioned it was too early to provide a more detailed timeline for when Manuel might be cleared for practice. Manuel walked without a limp and acknowledged his knee is feeling better while making a brief visit to the locker room Monday. Flynn was selected by Green Bay in the seventh round of the 2008 draft out of LSU, and spent his first four seasons as AaronRodgers backup. In 2012, Flynn signed with Seattle in free agency; he eventually lost the starting job to rookie RussellWilson. This past off-season, Oakland gave up two draft picks to acquire Flynn from the Seahawks. The Raiders also reworked Flynns contract in which the quarterback was guaranteed $6.5 million this season. Flynn instead struggled in two appearances. He completed 22 of 34 passes for 246 yards with a touchdown and interception. "Obviously, with the timing and whatever it was, we just werent right for each other. It just didnt work out," he said. "I needed to play better." Flynn said hes unaffected by whats happened. "Obviously, youve got to learn from what you didnt do so well and try not to make the same mistakes twice," he said. "Leaving Green Bay, I was extremely confident. And I dont think thats shaken any." Overall, Flynn has completed 109 of 175 attempts for 1,329 yards, with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions in 39 career games, including three starts. Tyvon Branch Raiders Jersey . The 31-year-old former world champion joined McLaren at the beginning of the 2010 season and his deal was due to expire this year though the English team had an option to extend it until 2012. Goergl also swept gold medals in both super-G and downhill at the 2011 world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and took bronze in both downhill and giant slalom at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. With her last win coming in a downhill on home snow in Altenmarkt two weeks ago, her form is right on track for the Sochi Games, which open Feb. 7. "Yes, I feel very comfortable on my material," said Goergl, who let out a loud scream when she finished her run and saw the No. 1 next to her name. "The shape is growing, and Im happy that I can ski the way that I want to ski, and that Im healthy." Goergls mother, Traudl Hecher, won bronze medals at the 1960 and 64 Olympics. Her older brother Stephan was also a World Cup skier, although he retired midway through last season. "Of course I saw all the trophies of my mom. And I was very psyched the very first time I stood) on skis," Goergl said. "I always wanted to go faster and faster." Goergl is also known for her singing, having sung the official tune for the Garmisch worlds at the opening ceremony. "If I want to (sing) I want to do it professionally," Goergl said. "Skiing is the focus now, and well see what the future brings." The top Americans were Julia Mancuso in seventh and Stacey Cook in ninth, both season bests. Lara Gut of Switzerland finished 19th and had her lead in the super-G standings cut to three points ahead of Anna Fenninger of Austria, who was fifth. In the overall standings, Hoefl-Riesch holds a 107-point lead over Fenninger. Hoefl-Rieschs previous best result in super-G this season was eighth. "Finally I made no big mistake," Hoefl-Riesch said. "Im proud and happy." Hosp was also third in a super-G in Beaver-Creek, Colorado, in November. "I feel really good this year in super-G and I know I can do really fast," said Hosp, the 2007 overall winner, who missed the Vancouver Games due to injury. "There (were) very hard times for me the last years. Now I got my feeling back." The super-G kicked off a busy schedule of four races in four days in the resort known as the "Queen" of the Italian Dolomites. Downhill races are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, followed by another super-G on Sunday. Two of this weeks races were originally scheduled for last weekend in Cortina but were wiped out due to heavy snowfall. The other two were moved from Garmisch due to a lack of snow in the German resort. Erik Pears Womens Jersey . Brooks scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter against his former club, spearheading a 101-92 victory over Boston on Friday night and helping snap a franchise-record eight-game home losing streak. Bazemore had 15 points, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers less than 2 minutes apart during the final 4:20 as the Lakers outscored the Celtics 38-18 in the final period. E. J. Manuel Bills Jersey . The Alouettes live game broadcasts move from sister station CJAD 800 to Montrals English-language all-sports station TSN 690, which will provide exclusive broadcast coverage of all Alouettes pre-season, regular season, and playoff games for at least the next three seasons.Montreal Canadiens goaltender CareyPrice will not be in uniform on Wednesday night when the team hosts the Detroit Red Wings,or on Thursday night when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins, head coach Michel Therrien told reporters after the morning practice. Price was hurt at the start of Wednesdays practice after facing just one shot as the team worked on their power play. He left the ice in discomfort and appeared to be favouring his leg. A Habs source told TSNs John Lu that Price suffered the injury in Sochi and not before the Olympics. Earlier in the day, head coach Michel Therrien told reporters the goaltender was battling the injury before he left for Russia and that his condition worsened during the Games. "During the Olympics, Carey aggravated a lower-body injury," he said. "He will not play the next two games and hes day-to-day." Thhe team later announced that DustinTokarski was being called up from Hamilton of the AHL. T.J.Graham Womens Jersey. Therrien already said Tuesday that PeterBudaj would start against the Red Wings. Price returned home from Sochi this week following an impressiveperformance at the Winter Olympics, capturing the gold medal with Canadas mens hockey team. He did not participate in the Canadiens Monday practice and took Tuesday off. Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, who also coached Canada in Sochi, said he was unaware of Price reportedly aggravating an injury during the Games. "I didnt know anything about CareyPrice being injured. All I know is that he played real well for us," Babcock said Wednesday. Prior to the Olympic break, Price was 26-17-5 through 48 games with the Canadiens and boasted a .925 save-percentage and 2.33 goals-against average. ' ' ' |

It was the one question being asked over and over at Whitecaps training this past week. Matt Moore Womens Jersey . A question that was repeatedly posed last season, and the season before that and in the 2011 campaign before that. "Why do the Whitecaps struggle so badly on the road?" Ive asked many players and team officials and fellow pundits that same question over the last three years, yet no one can really give a definitive answer. Searing heat, humidity and altitude are often mentioned. Youd think crossing time zones would be really hard on players, except that the Whitecaps managed three wins and a draw from five eastern trips last year alone. Theyve actually exhibited more road futility in the West. Playing surfaces can be unique in makeup and dimension but not drastic. Penalty areas are the same size, as are the goals, and yet the visiting team always seems to start the game with a statistical disadvantage. Some Las Vegas oddsmakers give MLS home teams a half goal advantage which represents a 10% edge, higher than any other Major North American Sport.Coach Carl Robinson pointed out this week that teams who are great at home, usually get into the playoffs. But teams that collect points away are usually comfortably in the playoffs by the time autumn rolls around. Nigel Reo Coker suggested that team spirit and camaraderie are the keys to success no matter where you play, and that this 2014 squad is capable of replicating its thrilling 4-1 win over New York away from BC Place. Whitecaps supporters, who are showing up to more and more away games, just want a team that looks and plays similarly no matter the venue; something Martin Rennie couldnt come to grips with over his 2 seasons. No venue has been a bigger obstacle for the Whitecaps than the one they visit on Sunday, when they play Chivas USA; co-tenants of the Stub Hub Centre with the LA Galaxy. In nine contests there, the Whitecaps have but one win, and two draws. Theyve scored just five times in Carson, while allowing 15 goals. With four games in SoCal this season (representing 11.7% of their entire schedule) taking more of those available 12 points might help reverse a trend that has seen the club win just seven out of 52 games away from Vancouver. http://www.authenticdolphinsshop.com/Game-Matt-Moore-Miami-Dolphins-Jersey-Womens-Nike-Nfl-8-Aqua-Green-Home-75 . The 38-year-old, a two-time All-Star, had been relegated to part-time duty and was batting .208 in 24 at-bats for the last-place Angels (6-14). Dan Marino Jersey . That led me to go back and look at the years Halladay and Hamels were drafted. Oddly enough, they were both chosen 17th overall in the June draft; Halladay in 1995 and Hamels in 2002. The player drafted immediately ahead of Halladay was pitcher Joe Fontenot by the San Francisco Giants. He was later one of three prospects traded to the Marlins for closer RobbNen, who went on to save 206 games over the next five years before calling it a career with 314 total saves.DETROIT -- Jim Leyland is as impressed with the Texas Rangers as he was during last years playoffs. "Theyre such a tremendously solid team in all areas -- starting pitching, defence, bullpen, offence," the Detroit manager said Friday. "Theyre a very good team, top to bottom. They have a lot of nice weapons, they have a lot of versatility. Theyre very good -- and we are, too." Friday night was supposed to be the second game of a four-game set between the Rangers and Tigers at Comerica Park, but it was called after a 25-minute rain delay before a single pitch was thrown. The teams will play a day-night doubleheader Saturday. RickPorcello (1-0) of Detroit will face MattHarrison (2-0) of Texas in the day game. That was supposed to be the matchup Friday. On Saturday night, Detroit ace JustinVerlander (1-1) takes the mound against NeftaliFeliz (1-0). The Rangers beat Detroit 10-3 on Thursday night in the first meeting between the teams since Texas beat the Tigers in six games in last years AL championship series. The Tigers (9-4) acquired PrinceFielder in the off-season, hoping to build on that ALCS appearance. Verlander will take the mound Saturday night, five days after throwing 131 pitches in a complete game victory at Kansas City. Feliz will try to outpitch Verlander. The Texas right-hander saved 72 games over the last two seasons, and hes been sharp so far after moving to the rotation. Feliz has a 2.25 ERA after two starts this year. "Hes obviously not coming out there full barrel anymore, like you do when youre coming in to close the game out. Starting the game, youve got to pace yourself," Leyland said. "But hes obviously got tremendous stuff." Texas slugger MikeNapoli has five homers, nine hits, seven runs and 10 RBIs in his last four games. He couldnt do any more damage Friday night because of the rainout. "Its something you cant controol," Napoli said. Dannell Ellerbe Jersey. "Well go do the split doubleheader tomorrow and start with game one and go from there." Fridays rainout means Texas reliever ScottFeldman will likely make a spot start Wednesday at home against the New York Yankees. Feldman has thrown only 2 1-3 innings this season. He pitched 1 1-3 innings Thursday night. "I was able to see some hitters up there, so thats always nice to get into some games," Feldman said. "Id rather be pitching more, but Im just getting my work in when I can." Texas has won seven straight games and is off to a major league-best 11-2 start. Napoli has homered in four straight games, and he isnt the only Ranger on a tear lately. JoshHamilton is hitting .426 with five homers, and the starting rotation is 9-0. The Rangers stole four bases Thursday, although they also ran into a couple outs early in the game. CraigGentry stole second and tried to reach third when a throw bounded into left field. He was thrown out. "Thats the way we play -- he just misjudged what he saw," manager Ron Washington said. "Im not going to blame him for misjudging what he saw because I dont want him to get tentative." NOTES: The Tigers on Friday acquired RHP ZachMiner from the Kansas City Royals for cash. Hes joining Double-A Erie. Miner, who turned 30 last month, appeared in 157 games for the Tigers from 2006-09, including 35 starts. He had surgery on his right elbow in May 2010 and signed a minor league deal with the Royals before last season. Now hes back in the Detroit organization. "His versatility I thought was his biggest asset," Leyland said. "He could go short, he could go long, he could start." ... Texas 2B IanKinsler was set to be the designated hitter Friday, with MichaelYoung playing 2B. Washington says he doesnt want Young to become "too stale just DHing." ' ' ' |

The first major trade domino has fallen. Panthers Greg Hardy Elite Jersey . RyanMiller and SteveOtthave been traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for JaroslavHalak, ChrisStewart, WilliamCarrier, a first-round draft pick in 2015 and a conditional third-round draft pick in 2016. The Sabres scratched both Miller andteam captain Ott ahead of Friday nights home game against the San Jose Sharks. Neither player was on the icefor the teams warm-up at the First Niagara Center. "The thought of getting the grit and determination of a player like SteveOtt and obviously RyanMillers resume speaks for itself, we think this gives us a better opportunity for success this year," said Blues general manager Doug Armstrong. The Sabres currently sit last in the NHL with a 17-34-8 record and are believed to be poised to move several veteran pieces in an effort to add future assets. The conditional third-round pick in 2016 would become a first-round pickin the 2014 NHL Draftif Miller re-signs with the Blues or St. Louis makes it to the 2014 Western Conference Final. However, should that pick become a first-rounder, the Blues would then acquire the Minnesota Wilds second-round pick (which Buffalo acquired as part of the return for JasonPominville) as well as the Sabres own 2014 third-rounder. If the Blues dont reach the Western Conference Final but sign Miller after the 2014 NHL Draft has taken place, then Buffalo would receive a 2016 second-round pick. Buffalo also retained a portion of Millers salary in the trade, according to a report on the teams official web site. Both Miller and Ott will join the Blues in Phoenix and are expected to be available for Sundays game against the Coyotes. The 33-year-old Miller has posted a 15-22-3 record with the Sabres this season, with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. Originally selected in the fifth round (138th overall) by the Sabres at the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Miller has spent his entire 11-year NHL career in Buffalo, posting a 284-186-1-56-28 record with a 2.60 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. Miller is in the final year of a five-year deal worth an average annual value of $6.25 million that he signed with the Sabres prior to the 2009-10 season. "I got to know some of the (Blues) with (USA Hockey)," Miller saidduring anewsconference in Buffalo after the deal was announced."They have a very strong competitive spirit, so I look forward to joining that group." Ott, 31, has appeared in 59 games with the Sabres this season, scoring nine goals and 11 assists. He is in the final year of a four-year, $11.8 million contract and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Ott was selected in the first round (25th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars and played nine seasons in Dallas before being traded to Buffalo in 2012. In 673 career games with the Sabres and Stars, Ott has scored 103 goals and 161 assists while racking up 1,318 penalty minutes. "Im really excited to have this opportunity with St. Louis," said Ott."My dream and my biggest goal is to have a chance at a Stanley Cup." Halak, 28, has appeared in 40 games with the Blues this season recording a 24-9-4 record, with a 2.23 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. He is currently in the final year of a four-year, $15 million contract he signed prior to the 2010-11 season and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Halak was selected in the ninth round (271st overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He has appeared in 260 career games with the Blues and Canadiens, posting a 139-81-26-29 record with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. The Slovakian has represented his country on numerous occasions including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he backstopped his team to a quarter-final upset over Sweden en route to a fourth-place finish. He played again at therecent Sochi Games where his team finished 11th. Speakingto Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Halak said. "(The trade) isstill fresh. Youre getting a good goalie. Good luck in the playoffs." In 58 games with the Blues this season, Stewart has scored 15 goals and 11 assists. Currently in the first of a two-year deal he signed prior to this season, Stewarts contract carries an average annual value of $4.15 million. Originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round (18th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Stewart has appeared in 377 career games with the Blues and Avalanche, scoring 115 goals and 113 assists. He was acquired by the Blues along with KevinShattenkirk and a second-round draft pick in the blockbuster deal that sent ErikJohnson, JayMcClement and a first round pick to Colorado in February, 2011. Carrier, a 19-year-old prospect, was selected in the second round (57th overall) by the Blues at the 2013 NHL Draft. The left winger has scored17 goals and39 assists in 59 combined games with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and Drummondville Voltigeurs so far this season in the QMJHL. The Sabres now possess 10 combined picks in the first two rounds of the 2014 and 2015 Drafts. In addition to their own first- and second-round picks in 2014they possess the Blues first-rounder, the Los Angeles Kings second-round pick (acquired in excahnge for RobynRegehr) and the aforementioned Minnesota second-rounder. In addition to their own 2015 picks they also own the Kings second round pick (also obtained in the Regehr trade) and the New York Islanders second-rounder (acquired in the trade that sent Thomas Venk to Long Island). They also possess a conditional first from the New York Islanders - in either 2014 or 2015, to be determined by the Islanders- as part of the return for Vanek. Panthers Garry Williams Black Jersey . No. 1-ranked Nadal defeated fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in his first-round match on Tuesday night, his first in more than three weeks after losing the Australian Open final to Stanislaw Wawrinka.http://www.panthersstore.us.com/1-nike-elite-cam-newton-mens-jersey-nfl-carolina-panthers-autographed-lights-out-black.html . Porter let it fly to beat the shot clock -- and it went in for his first NBA 3-pointer. "My thought was like, Man, if you make that type of shot, then here goes the fourth quarter," Prince said. The Grizzlies led by as many as 19 in the final period, but the Wizards made six 3s over those final 12 minutes.SOCHI, Russia -- SheaWebers shot left his stick, and by the time it hit the net, Canada was able to exhale. For much of the night, Team Canada forced everyone to hold their collective breath while goaltender KristersGudlevskis and Latvia played with house money in the mens Olympic hockey quarter-final. Webers third-period goal was enough to break the tie and help the Canadians escape with a 2-1 victory at Bolshoy Ice Dome on Wednesday. The win gave Canada a spot in semifinals, where it will meet the rival Americans for a berth in the gold-medal game. The United States beat the Czech Republic 5-2 at Shayba Arena to move on. Nerves from the Canadian contingent were palpable throughout the game against Latvia, from the time LaurisDarzins scored in the first period to tie the score until Weber reclaimed the lead with a blast from the point on the power play at 13:06 of the third. Had 11th-seeded Latvia beaten third-seeded Canada, it would have arguably been one of the biggest upsets in the history of Olympic hockey. Instead, Canada was able to survive an unexpected test against a gritty group coached by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native Ted Nolan. Latvia was outshot 57-16 overall but managed to hang in the game thanks to 55 saves from Gudlevskis, a prospect in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. "It can get to you," Canadian forward PatrickMarleau said Canadas struggles to beat Gudlevskis. PatrickSharp scored Canadas first goal in the first period, and goalie CareyPrice made 15 saves. But it was Webers goal through a screen after a give-and-go at the points with DrewDoughty with three seconds left on a power play that made the difference. With puck drop coming just two hours after host Russias tournament ended with a stunning 3-1 loss to Finland, the atmosphere inside Bolshoy was, as PavelDatsyuk described his emotions, "empty." Previously the home fans filled the arena, chanted "Roos-ee-ah" and at least revelled in rooting against Canada. This time they were more subdued, save for joining in with some "Lat-vee-ah" chants started by a group wearing bright orange. Gudlevskis gave them a chance to cheer with a big save on JamieBenn two minutes in, and ChrisKunitz a chance to gasp as he hit the crossbar seconds after SidneyCrosby almost scored. But Canadian fans got the first chance to celebrate when the fourth line opened the scoring 13:37 in. Rick;Nash collected the puck in front of the net, skated behind it just long enough for JohnTavares to set a screen and fed Sharp, who hit the open hole perfectly to make it 1-0. Panthers Kelvin Benjamin Grey Jersey. Not long after, a set neutral-zone play by Latvia led to a breakaway on Price and a tie score. Defenceman SandisOzolinsh stepped off the ice and Darzins, a forward who impressed with a pretty toe drag earlier, stepped on just in time for Winnipeg Jets property ArtursKulda to spring him for a pass. Canadian defencemen JayBouwmeester and AlexPietrangelo got beat clean, and Darzins scored on a back-hander over Prices right pad at 15:41. That was enough to fire up many Russian fans to make this much more like a hostile, road game for Canada. On the ice it felt similar, as Ted Nolans group made the Canadians work for quality scoring chances despite a huge shot discrepancy. Early in the second period it wasnt a shot but a hit that made a huge difference for Canada and the New York Islanders. Kulda hit Tavares hard, and the fourth-line centre went down in a heap in the corner. Tavares was able to skate off under his own power and remained on the bench briefly before going down the tunnel. It was not immediately clear what the injury was. Without Tavares, coach Mike Babcock was forced to shuffle his lines, putting 13th forward MartinSt.Louis on right wing with Kunitz and Crosby and sliding Bergeron down to centre the fourth line between Sharp and Nash. Canada continued the siege on Gudlevskis throughout the second period, outshooting Latvia 15-2. But it could not break through. It looked like that run was over 8:27 into the third, but a controversial call kept it 1-1. JonathanToews and Marleau got the puck to the goal-line and almost over, but Latvia defenceman Kristaps Sotnieks gloved it to keep it out. The ruling was that the puck did not fully cross the line, and Canada did not get a penalty shot because that cannot be awarded on review. NOTES: Forward MattDuchene and defenceman P.K.Subban were Canadas healthy scratches vs. Latvia. Babcock said Subban, who appeared in only one of four games, has been "excellent" about handling his role. Duchene tweeted a "best of luck" message to his teammates Wednesday afternoon. ... Former Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators forward KasparsDaugavins was scratched for Latvia because of an illness. ... The attendance was announced as 9,852. ' ' ' |

The Screaming Eagles won the draft lottery that was held Thursday and will get first choice at the draft on June 8 in Chicoutimi. Cape Breton finished last overall this season, one point behind the defending Memorial Cup champion Shawinigan Cataractes. Jefferson, the teams leading scorer and rebounder, has been hobbled since straining the plantar fascia in his left foot in the first quarter of Game 1. He didnt participate in Mondays shoot around. "Hes not close to where he was for the last two games," Clifford said. Clifford said in Game 3 Jeffersons foot got worse as the game progressed and having only one day off in between games didnt help his chances of being ready for Game 4. Jefferson hobbled noticeably Monday as he left the gym after watching teammates shoot around in practice. Jefferson said he feels as if hes "walking on needles." "I wouldnt wish this pain on anyone," Jefferson said. "Its the worst pain Ive ever dealt with in my career." Jefferson wouldnt rule himself out, saying hes taking things hour-to-hour. "Im seeing how its going to feel and go from there," Jefferson said. Miami leads the series 3-0 and can close out the Bobcats with a win Monday night in Charlotte. Clifford said BismackBiyombo is expected to start for Jefferson. That represents a major dropoff in production, particularly from the offensive end. Jefferson averaged 21.8 points and 10.8 rebound per game in his first season with the Bobcats, while Biyombo has never scored more than 14 points in a game.. Carl Bradford Packers Jersey. . Biyombo has only played 15 minutes in the playoffs and scored one point. Jeffersons teammates said they respect his ability to get on the floor the past two games. "He has given us all he can," point guard KembaWalker said. "And I think down to a man we appreciate his effort. Hes been nothing but great for us. He has been playing really well and hes not 100 per cent." Said Clifford: "I know how badly Al wants to play. The most upset person about this is him. So its frustrating, but again its part of pro sports." Clifford said the Bobcats will play more five-man basketball using pick and rolls, rather than relying on Jefferson in the low post. Walker, the teams second-leading scorer, will be relied upon to help pick up the slack in Jeffersons absence. "We have to find better ways for Kemba to be on the attack," Clifford said. Jefferson said its frustrating that he worked so hard all season only to injure the foot in the first quarter of the playoffs. "This season has been a great season for all of the things we have done so far," Jefferson said. "We are going into the game tonight trying to win... Regardless of what may happen it has been a wonderful season and guys have a lot to be proud of for the things we have done this season. But we cant take any steps back. We have to continue to build and get better." Jefferson said he wont need surgery after the season. ' ' ' |

or the most in the N
TORONTO JoseBautista is nearing a return to the Blue Jays lineup and pinch hit in the sixth inning of Sundays series finale against the White Sox. Len Dawson . Batting for DionerNavarro with runners on the corners and the Jays down 2-0 at the time, Bautista grounded out to end the inning. Fans who arrived to watch batting practice were treated to Bautistas first public testing of his injured left hamstring. He was running sprints in the outfield; he estimated at about 50 to 60-percent effort and admitted to feeling some pain, which he said he expected. Bautista will work out on Mondays off day and is hopeful of being in the starting lineup on Tuesday when the Jays play a Canada Day matinee against the Brewers. He hasnt been in the starting lineup since removing himself in the third inning of the June 22 loss in Cincinnati. "You know, its huge," said Bautista of avoiding the disabled list. Then he offered a precautionary thought: "Obviously thats still not in the plans but you never know how things are going to respond," said Bautista. "I just want to make it clear that I can get back into playing and because theres a previous injury there anything can happen. Im not trying to jinx it or anything but thats just reality." Bautista has been hitting in the underneath batting cage. "I feel like hitting is much easier right now than running," he said. While its superfluous to suggest the Blue Jays miss Bautista when hes not in the lineup the matter became more pronounced as the club faced three Chicago lefthanders over the weekend. After two home games versus Milwaukee, against right-handed starters, the Jays kick off their next road trip with four games in Oakland. The As will throw three left-handers at the Blue Jays in that series. Bautistas done serious damage to southpaws this year. Seven of his 15 home runs have been hit off of lefties. Hes accomplished that in only 57 at-bats. His on-base plus slugging percentage sits at an otherworldly 1.329. Combine Bautistas absence with the predominantly right-handed lineup manager John Gibbons has played this weekend, featuring Triple-A call ups Brad Glenn and DarinMastroianni, and offence has been in relatively short supply. Left-handed hitters AdamLind and ColbyRasmus, when theyve played, have struggled as the numbers would suggest they would. Bautista isnt committing to whether hell be Tuesdays designated hitter or take his usual spot in right field. "If I come in and feel 100-percent and great and go out on the field and play defence and I could not feel 100-percent and ask to DH instead of playing the field," said Bautista. "It all depends on how I feel on Tuesday and I wont know that until Tuesday." If Bautistas hamstring limits him to the designated hitters role, that likely removes AdamLind from the Canada Day starting lineup. Against a right-handed starting pitcher, thats less than ideal. Should Bautista declare himself fit to play right field, EdwinEncarnacion and AdamLind would both play, one as the designated hitter and the other at first base. Jovan Belcher . 1 goalie for Tuesdays all-Ontario showdown, hoping that JamesReimer can build on the solid work put in this month by JonasGustavsson. Ryan Succop . The same goes for Swedens DanielSedin. The Vancouver Canucks teammates are both concerned over security at the Games in Sochi, Russia, after a series of threats and terrorist attacks in the region.TORONTO The shootout has proven a viable saving grace for this years edition of the Maple Leafs. When ReidBoucher shot wide in what would be the Devils final attempt on JonathanBernier in the third round of the skills competition Sunday, he handed Toronto its eighth victorious decision in the shootout this season tied for the most in the NHL. In fact, the Leafs have more victories in the shootout since the start of November (six) than they do in regulation/overtime (five), a fact thats masked, until recently, just how poorly the team has performed in the past two-plus months (12-16-5). But for a team that was teetering on a four-game losing streak the second longest this season the winning decision at the ACC, in a reality divorced from the game itself, was nonetheless needed and important. "Well, we can breathe," said Randy Carlyle, following the 3-2 victory, the second in two tries against the Devils this season, both wins coming in the shootout. "Theres been a lot of gasping going on, and even in this game there was a lot of gasping going on how tight it was." It was not a pretty performance in many regards the Leafs were outshot 38-25 and out-attempted 83-48 but one that at least offered some of the requisite intensity and desire that had been missing amid the recent slide and quite often throughout whats been a disappointing campaign to date. And they might very well have won it in regulation had it not been for a blown call on TylerBozaks apparent go-ahead goal in the second frame. "Guys are a little looser tonight already," MasonRaymond told the Leaf Report shortly after the win. "It feels good. It feels good to get a win." "Hopefully this relieves a little bit of the stress thats involved for our hockey club, and they can get back playing to the way were capable of playing," added Carlyle. Consistency has been a foe of his team so far. The Leafs have reeled off exactly one winning streak since October it lasted three games, two of which were won in shootouts winning back-to-back games on just two other occasions. Stringing together heartier efforts against the Capitals and Devils in recent days then is just a mild step in the right direction. The teams response in an upcoming back-to-back with the Bruins and Sabres will indicate whether, in fact, a corner is gradually being turned. "I dont think its an exact recipe you can follow," Raymond said of achieving consistency. "Youve got to build off the things, in my opinion, that you did well, stay positive and believe. I think thats a big part of it is just believing that we can get the job done and go out there and get wins." "I think the last few games our compete level and effort has been way better," said van Riemsdyk, who scored for the second straight game, "and I think if we continue to play in that same mold well have some more results that we want." Five Points 1. Gardiners Development Pt. 1 Carlyle labeled 23-year-old JakeGardiners performance in Washington Friday night as "the model in which wed like him to play. Gardiner, who had been scratched for just the second time all season one night earlier in Carolina, raised his performance in the eyes of the coaching staff against the Capitals. "Much different JakeGardiner," said Carlyle, observing improved strength and intensity in the defensive zone as well as better decision-making with the puck. Such is the road to development for a young defender in the NHL. Many ups come with many downs. "Jake is a talented young player and there are steps that he has to continue to take," said Carlyle, who met with Gardiner briefly at the end of Sundays morning skate. "With Jake, he has the ability to move the puck both with his hands and with his feet he can skate. He would like to make more consistent decisions with the puck and so would we. Weve struggled to find a consistent level for him over the last probably five or six games." That inconsistency led Carlyle to scratch Gardiner last week, a questionable move that blew up in a 6-1 loss to the Hurricanes. But if the sit-down was designed to spark a reaction then it may have achieved some success the next night in the U.S. capital. "I think what happens with young players is they find that theyre always trying to do one thing and maybe trying to do too much of one thing and that sometimes turns into where you skate the puck into areas where you shouldnt and turn over the puck," said Carlyle. "But hes a young player that has got a tremendous upside." 2. Gardiners Development Pt. 2 What Carlyle has done additionally, in the meann-time, is remove Gardiner from the teams top two pairings he and 19-year-old MorganRielly formed the third grouping for the second straight game against the Devils and thus lighten the burden he is exposed to on a night to night basis. Jamaal Charles. Speaking to the Leaf Report on Sunday morning, Gardiner described his decision-making with the puck as one needed improvement, an issue again at times on Sunday night. "Dont try and force anything," he said. "I think I was trying to make plays that werent there and I was maybe trying to move the puck a little bit too quickly. When theres not an open guy, maybe just be patient and hold onto the puck a little bit." Gardiner, who played over 24 minutes against the Devils, is averaging nearly 22 minutes per game this season, second on the team. 3. Bolland Front DaveBolland hasnt played since Nov. 2, when his left ankle was sliced by the skate blade of Canucks forward ZackKassian. The 27-year-old has missed 32 games with the injury, but is due to finally start skating with the team on Thursday. Bolland recently traveled to Montreal in hopes of having a new boot designed specifically to support the injured area. That boot was due to arrive in Toronto on Monday with the Mimico native then expected to skate before joining the Leafs on a four-game road trip next week. An exact timeframe for return remains unclear. 4. Harder to Play Against? Asked before the game if this version of the Maple Leafs was as difficult to play against as the one that ended a lengthy playoff drought last season, Carlyle responded flatly in the negative. "Nowhere near," he said. "Weve been scratching our heads and trying to figure out why." And if there was one element that remained constant from a Friday loss in Washington to Sundays win in Toronto, it was the intensity of his group. The execution may have been lacking at times, but the compete Carlyle has been prodding for remained. "Thats one thing that weve really tried to put at the forefront in the last three weeks to a month is that our compete level has to go to a level where were satisfied," said Carlyle on Sunday morning. "Thats the one thing that weve said is our compete level has to go up." Carlyle pointed to the simple will required to win puck battles. "We have been guilty of just standing around in those situations," he said. "I call it getting inside. I think to be inside in todays NHL is the key because you cant hook and hold, you have to skate your way to get inside. "When we do it we can play effective hockey and give ourselves a chance to win. And when we dont do it were receiving the game, were standing around. I would say thats the biggest mystery for the coaching staff." 5. Stunted Starts Toronto has exited the first frame with a lead in 12 of 47 games this season, trailing, by comparison, on 17 occasions. Substandard starts have been a source of considerable trouble, often requiring the club to dig out from an early hole without much ultimate success. "All year long, weve [had] pretty poor starts," said Gardiner. "We try to dig ourselves out of it and then we start playing well and its too late by that time so if we can play almost desperate and aggressive I think well have better starts and itll lead to a better outcome." The Leafs started slowly again on Sunday outshot 7-1 in the opening 10 minutes but rebounded during the back half of the period, finding the games first goal from TylerBozak, his seventh this season. "We were rusty, I thought, for the first 10 or 12 minutes of the game," said Carlyle. Stats-Pack 8-4 Leafs record in the shootout this season. 13 Points in the past 11 games for TylerBozak, who has 19 points in 23 games this season. 8 Shootout wins for the Leafs this season, tied with the Capitals for the most in the NHL. 1 Goals in the past 14 games for NazemKadri. 24:23 Ice-time for JakeGardiner against the Devils, second on the team to DionPhaneuf. 62% - Leafs success rate on the draw against the Devils. 2 Consecutive games with a goal for JamesvanRiemsdyk, who had two in the preceding 15 games. Special Teams Capsule PP: 1-4 Season: 21.8% (5th) PK: 3-4 Season: 77.4% (27th) Quote of the Night "I asked him if he could watch it after the game and maybe next time he has a game [with us] he can apologize or something because that was pretty brutal." - JamesvanRiemsdyk, on his conversation with an official following TylerBozaks waved off goal in the second period. Up Next The Leafs visit the Bruins in Boston on Tuesday night. ' ' ' |

W Jason Chimera stand out -- t
Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender JamieMcLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Panthers Cam Newton Alternate Jersey . Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. HenrikLundqvist, New York Rangers (5) - Simply put, Lundqvist was brilliant. His whole game was defined by one save - a blocker reaction play on ThomasVanek, for the save of the series and playoffs for him. He hallenged himself after Game 5, where he did not play very well, and responded with his best game of the playoffs and delivered the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final. DustinTokarski, Montreal Canadiens (4) - Tokarski was outstanding on Thursday and was the reason why the game was close. He made huge saves on Derrick Brassard, DerekStepan, MatsZuccarello and BenoitPouliot. Tokarski showed poise and confidence beyond his experience. It was a heavy pressure situation and he passed with flying colours ,showing he belongs in the NHL. Tokarski gave the Canadiens an opportunity to win in this series and thats all that could be asked of him coming in for CareyPrice.Panthers Cam Newton Blue Jersey . -- ChrisCampoli didnt want to leave Chicago but when the Blackhawks walked away, he was quite pleased to move to the Montreal Canadiens. Panthers Sam Mills Lights Out Jersey . LOUIS -- The St.Each year I look back at the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings, comparing the preseason to end-of-season results and see what kind of factors contributed to unanticipated results. Injuries, goaltending and unexpected individual performances, both good and bad, tend to play the largest role. Its important to note that the pre-season rankings are not predictions, because they are based on current value of the team, with the understanding that there will be factors throughout the season (trades, injuries, unexpected performances -- both good and bad) that affect results. But if a team has a dramatically different ranking at the end of the season, compared to the beginning, there ought to be some reasons that are evident for that change. Basically, what happened that wasnt necessarily expected in training camp? Here are some of the reasons for differences in rankings between rankings in September, 2013 and those in mid-April, 2014. ANAHEIM DUCKS Pre-Season Rank: 15 Final Rank: 7 Average Rank: 7.16 Whats the Difference?: Shooting percentage is the biggie, as the Ducks scored on a league-best 10.7% of their 5-on-5 score-close shots this season, more than 2.0% better than any other team, so they scored more than I expected. Sure, Getzlaf and Perry are going to be varying degrees of great year after year, but this year, NickBonino, MathieuPerreault and PatrickMaroon, among others, had more productive seasons than forecasted. BOSTON BRUINS Pre-Season Rank:4 Final Rank: 1 Average Rank: 5.64 Whats the Difference?: The Bruins have a stable core, so its no surprise that they finished at or near the top of the rankings, but they rose to the very top because players like RW ReillySmith and C CarlSoderberg exceeded expectations and then, when D DennisSeidenberg suffered a season-ending injury, the Bruins defence handled the loss, despite ToreyKrug, DougieHamilton, MattBartkowski and KevanMiller each having less than 50 games of NHL experience coming into the season. BUFFALO SABRES Pre-Season Rank: 29 Final Rank: 30 Average Rank: 29.84 Whats the Difference?: Not much, only that the Sabres had G RyanMiller and LW ThomasVanek on the roster at the start of the season. Once they were moved, which was inevitable, the Sabres were practically assured of finishing 30th in the rankings. CALGARY FLAMES Pre-Season Rank: 28 Final Rank: 21 Average Rank: 23.56 Whats the Difference?: Strangely enough, the Flames reversed the previous seasons results (forecasted for 21st and finished 28th), exceeding expectations even though they didnt get much by way of goaltending, which would be a common way for many teams to surpass the preseason forecast. In the Flames case, they got a Norris-calibre season out of MarkGiordano, and T.J.Brodie continued to improve as his partner. That was probably the biggest factor in the Flames being more competitive, but a number of players -- MikaelBacklund, SeanMonahan, JoeColborne, PaulByron -- exceeded expectations. CAROLINA HURRICANES Pre-Season Rank: 22 Final Rank: 22 Average Rank: 22.44 Whats the Difference?: Not much, ultimately. EricStaal, AlexanderSemin and JiriTlusty hit a market correction after their percentage-driven ride in 2013, but some Canes countered that. JeffSkinner scored 33 goals, and D AndrejSekera was a revelation after coming over from Buffalo. Stellar play from G AntonKhudobin also offset a tough year for CamWard. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS Pre-Season Rank: 1 Final Rank: 2 Average Rank: 3.96 Whats the Difference?: Its awfully difficult to take No. 1 from wire to wire, and the Blackhawks had some ups and downs during the year but, in the grand scheme, they are who we thought they were. Some a little better (PatrickSharp, BrentSeabrook, BenSmith), some a little worse (JonathanToews, BryanBickell) but the final product remains a Cup contender. COLORADO AVALANCHEPre-Season Rank: 26 Final Rank: 6 Average Rank: 6.48 Whats the Difference?: Start with G SemyonVarlamov, who was nearly 37 goals better than he was last season, and their rag-tag defence had some solid performances. ErikJohnson started living up to his billing, TysonBarrie eventually got a chance to play and bargain additions NickHolden and AndreBenoit were productive enough too. The forwards remain the strength of the team, but if not for Varlamovs goaltending, the rest likely wouldnt have much mattered, considering that the Avalanche were still a bottom-feeding possession team. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS Pre-Season Rank: 18Final Rank: 14 Average Rank: 17.44 Whats the Difference?: The emergence of No. 1 centre RyanJohansen stands out the most, but the Blue Jackets arent too far off where they were expected to be. Their preseason ranking, minus an injured NathanHorton, had them on the fringe of a playoff spot and their final ranking, also without Horton, was for a team that made the playoffs by three points. DALLAS STARS Pre-Season Rank: 19 Final Rank: 10 Average Rank: 15.80 Whats the Difference?: It wasnt an utter shock that TylerSeguin and JamieBenn worked well together, but Seguin breaking through for an 84-point season raised the proverbial bar for the Stars. The rest of the lineup might be underwhelming, but 17 goals from RyanGarbutt? 14 from AntoineRoussel? Those contributions helped in the final analysis too, because the Stars dont have a clear division of lines behind their top unit. DETROIT RED WINGSPre-Season Rank: 7 Final Rank: 16 Average Rank: 17.88 Whats the Difference?: Well, going without PavelDatsyuk and HenrikZetterberg for large chunks of the year was the big difference throughout the season, and while it was somewhat offset by the emergence of so many young players -- GustavNyquist, TomasTatar, RileySheahan, TomasJurco etc. -- G JimmyHoward didnt play to the level that he has in recent seasons either, so the Wings went from being a contender in the preseason to a team just sneaking into the playoffs by seasons end. EDMONTON OILERS Pre-Season Rank: 24 Final Rank: 28 Average Rank: 26.60 Whats the Difference?: Their defence was as bad as expected, but if there was one reason that the Oilers ended up being even worse than forecasted is that, coming into the season, the expectation was that DevanDubnyk would be able to provide at least average goaltending, as he had previously. That didnt quite happen. They at least addressed the issue, eventually, by acquiring BenScrivens and ViktorFasth. FLORIDA PANTHERS Pre-Season Rank: 30 Final Rank: 29 Average Rank: 28.48 Whats the Difference?: A team that had an 18-year-old No. 1 centre and a 39-year-old starting goaltender lived down to expectations (though not specifically the fault of those two). The Panthers may have received more than expected from D TomGilbert and rookie C NickBjugstad, but thats offset by a 9-goal season from second-year LW JonathanHuberdeau. LOS ANGELES KINGS Pre-Season Rank: 3 Final Rank: 8 Average Rank: 7.84 Whats the Difference?: Still a very good team, but had trouble scoring at times, as JustinWilliams, MikeRichards and DustinBrown all scored below their previous norms. Adding MarianGaborik at the deadline helps somewhat, but Gaboriks numbers didnt take off until he got to L.A., where he finished the year with 16 points in the last 16 games. MINNESOTA WILD Pre-Season Rank: 11 Final Rank: 13 Average Rank: 13.20 Whats the Difference?: It was quite a roller-coaster for the Wild to end up just a couple spots behind the starting point. They reached as high as No. 4, thanks to G JoshHardings incredible start to the year, but sunk as low as 25 when injuries took Harding, ZachParise and MikkoKoivu out of the lineup, and had been climbing with DarcyKuemper in goal, but dipped a little late in the year once IlyaBryzgalov was next on that goaltending conveyor belt. MONTREAL CANADIENS Pre-Season Rank: 10 Final Rank: 11 Average Rank: 10.60 Whats the Difference?: There werent as many highs and lows for the Habs, as G CareyPrice limited their downside this season (particularly compared to last season) and the lineup brought both good and bad. Adding ThomasVanek to MaxPacioretty on the top line sure helped, but a lot of the secondary sources of offence didnt have great years. Panthers Sam Mills Womens Jersey. Whether it was LarsEller, Alexander Galchenyuk, DanielBriere or ReneBourque, there were enough Habs regulars that didnt produce as much as hoped. NASHVILLE PREDATORS Pre-Season Rank: 27 Final Rank: 18 Average Rank: 19.60 Whats the Difference?: With a strong finish to the year, the Predators actually did much better than expected, despite goaltending being a problem all year, as PekkaRinne got hurt and, even once he returned to action, Rinne wasnt up to his usual standards. By seasons end, CraigSmith, RyanEllis and NickSpaling were some Predators that fared better than anticipated, while newcomer CalleJarnkrok quickly made up for the departure of his trade counterpart, DavidLegwand. NEW JERSEY DEVILS Pre-Season Rank: 20 Final Rank: 15 Average Rank: 20.56 Whats the Difference?: Better than their place in the standings, as they were undone by an awful shootout record, the Devils did have some positives, including a great year for RW JaromirJagr, along with some potential exhibited by rookie defencemen JonMerrill and EricGelinas, who werent on the roster to start the year. The other positive, that could have tilted even more, based on playing time, was that G CorySchneider did ultimately play more than MartinBrodeur. Their ranking might have been even better had Schneider played 55 games instead of 45. NEW YORK ISLANDERS Pre-Season Rank: 17 Final Rank: 27 Average Rank: 25.04 Whats the Difference?: All the positivity of the Islanders 2013 playoff berth went away quickly, but at the start of the year, the Islanders were optimistic enough to trade for ThomasVanek, sacrificing MattMoulson and a first-round pick in the process. RW KyleOkposo was a surprise leading scorer but, by seasons end, his linemates, JohnTavares and Vanek, were out of the lineup due to injury and trade, respectively. That left a lot of young players to audition for roles in the future. NEW YORK RANGERS Pre-Season Rank: 14 Final Rank: 9 Average Rank: 15.84 Whats the Difference?: Even though he didnt do much after arriving from Tampa Bay, the addition of MartinSt.Louis did raise the Rangers ranking late in the year, but there were others that helped htem exceed expectations. RW MatsZuccarello led the team in scoring, and LW BenoitPouliot provided useful forward depth, while backup G CamTalbot was a pleasant surprise in 21 games (backup goalie not really a factor for a playoff teams ranking, but still noteworthy). OTTAWA SENATORS Pre-Season Rank: 6 Final Rank: 25 Average Rank: 20.64 Whats the Difference?: Just as the Avalanche were the big surprise, the Senators were the big disappointment. Just as Colorado benefitted from great goaltending, the Senators struggled because both CraigAnderson and RobinLehner regressed hard after both were phenomenal in 2013. Between the pair, they were nearly 36 goals worse than the year before, using Hockey References Goals Saved Above Average. Expectations were so much higher for the Senators this season because D ErikKarlsson and C JasonSpezza, who had both missed much of the previous season, were returning to the lineup and a couple of healthy stars would figure to make a team better. Whats especially remarkable about the fall was that it overshadowed what was a breakout year for C KyleTurris, who played on a very effective line with new Senators wingers ClarkeMacArthur and BobbyRyan. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS Pre-Season Rank: 13 Final Rank: 12 Average Rank: 20.28 Whats the Difference?: Dug a hole early, and were ranked in the bottom third for the first half of the season, before eventually moving into a ranking more in line with expectations. Hoped for more from C VincentLecavalier, but got more from G SteveMason than they had a reasonable right to expect, and now enter the playoffs as an underdog, though a lively one at that. PHOENIX COYOTES Pre-Season Rank: 25 Final Rank: 19 Average Rank: 13.72 Whats the Difference?: Cruised way above expectations for the first half of the year, but faded, as C MikeRibeiro had a disappointing year and scoring in general got leaner as the season went on and injuries to C MartinHanzal and G MikeSmith late in the year pretty much sealed their fate. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS Pre-Season Rank: 2 Final Rank: 4 Average Rank: 5.92 Whats the Difference?: Injuries -- a lot of injuries -- kept the Penguins ranked lower than their starting and finishing point, but they go into the playoffs with EvgeniMalkin back to anchor the second line and PaulMartin and KrisLetang returned late in the year to upgrade the defence. ST. LOUIS BLUES Pre-Season Rank: 5 Final Rank: 5 Average Rank: 2.04 Whats the Difference?: The team that held down the No.1 ranking more than any other, 10 times on top, were on their way to exceeding expectations before a late-season swoon prompted by injuries and a rough patch for G RyanMiller. SAN JOSE SHARKS Pre-Season Rank: 9 Final Rank: 3 Average Rank: 3.64 Whats the Difference?: While its no surprise that the Sharks are a contender, there were enough players that exceeded preseason forecasts. JoePavelski, TommyWingels, JasonDemers and JamesSheppard were better than they had been previously, while rookies TomasHertl and MattNieto were also useful contributors (and Hertl returned from injury late in the season), so they go from being ranked as a good team to being ranked as a Cup contender. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING Pre-Season Rank: 21 Final Rank: 17 Average Rank: 13.16 Whats the Difference?: For good chunks of the season, the Lightning exceeded their forecast, thanks to G BenBishop, who is currently hurt, which has dropped Tampa Bay closer to that preseason expectation level. Rookies are ranked conservatively coming into the season, so it figured that the Lightning would exceed expectations with LW OndrejPalat, C TylerJohnson, D RadkoGudas, LW J.T.Brown and RW NikitaKucherov among those playing regular roles. Palat and Johnson, in particular, contributed much more than anticipated. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS Pre-Season Rank: 16 Final Rank: 26 Average Rank: 17.32 Whats the Difference?: Its not as if the Maple Leafs didnt get some better-than-expected performances -- C TylerBozak, LW MasonRaymond and G JonathanBernier were all better-than-advertised -- but there was expected regression from LW JoffreyLupul and C NazemKadri and a complete bust year from free agent signee RW DavidClarkson. The Leafs were as high as No. 6 a month into the season, before crashing, the first time, and rebounded as high as 15 in the second half of the season before their late-season plummet left them notably worse than forecasted. VANCOUVER CANUCKS Pre-Season Rank: 12 Final Rank: 24 Average Rank: 14.32 Whats the Difference?: Through the first half of the season, the Canucks were consistently ahead of their forecasted ranking, but injuries (AlexanderEdler, HenrikSedin, Alex Burrows, RobertoLuongo all out at times in January) started to add up, the results got much worse and it led the Canucks to trade Luongo to Florida, leaving them with lesser options in goal. WASHINGTON CAPITALS Pre-Season Rank: 8 Final Rank: 20 Average Rank: 17.56 Whats the Difference?: Held okay for a while, but a couple of months into the season, they ran into goaltending problems (though that seemed to be fixed by acquiring JaroslavHalak) and while there were some nice years from the supporting cast -- RW JoelWard and LW JasonChimera stand out -- the Capitals got very little goal production from MarcusJohansson and MartinErat, leaving them just short of a playoff berth. WINNIPEG JETS Pre-Season Rank: 23 Final Rank: 23 Average Rank: 18.94 Whats the Difference?: Apparently, not much, since they ended where they started. Have a decent core and the addition of rookies C MarkScheifele and D JacobTrouba lifted the Jets for a time, but, in the end, G OndrejPavelec delivering a .901 save percentage was enough to bring them back into the bottom third of the rankings. EDMONTON -- It would be difficult to find a team much harder to figure out than the Edmonton Oilers. Packers Richard Rodgers Youth Jersey . TaylorHall scored a hat trick and added an assist as the Oilers bounced back from a stinker of a loss with a surprising 8-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. "Its always a fun night when you get a hat trick, but for us to win in the fashion that we did gives us some confidence," said Hall, who recorded his fourth career hat trick. "This homestand could prove to be big for us. "I havent been in this league long, but Ive been in it enough to know that anything can happen on any night against any team. You have to be ready for the opportunity. You just have to come out and play your game. Sometimes youre going to get eight and some nights youre going to get zero. And tonight was a great night." AlesHemsky, DavidPerron, MarkArcobello, JordanEberle and SamGagner also scored for the Oilers (10-18-2) who replaced a quarter of their lineup for the game after a 6-2 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday. The Oilers improved to just 4-9-0 at home, but have won six of their last nine overall. "I dont know if you see a score like that coming, but I think every morning you come into a game youre optimistic," said Oilers head coach DallasEakins. "Over the last few weeks our group has taken a step in mental toughness and something in that degree. I didnt see a win of that score coming though, I definitely thought wed be in a tight game." NickHolden and P.A. Parenteau responded for the Avalanche (19-7-0) who had won two in a row and five of their last six coming into the game. Colorado goalie SemyonVarlamov allowed eight goals on 28 shots, however three of those came in the final five minutes with the game clearly out of reach. "What happened in the last five minutes, we have to look at each other and play for our goaltender there," said Avalanche assistant captain PaulStastny. "Those last two goals are on us. We cant quit on our goaltender like that. He has been our best player all year. Hanging him out to dry like that is unacceptable." Head coach PatrickRoy wasnt as upset after the game as could have been expected from such a lopsided score. "Im not disappointed at all," he said. "(The Oilers) played well and scored power-play goals, they scored on the rush. We knew before the game that its a team that it would be very dangerous to exchange chances with. If they go on the rush, its their game and we played into it. We need to learn from it. "They scored three goals in the last four minutes or so. It was a closer game than the score showed I think." The Oilers started the scoring before the game was four minutes old as PhilipLarsen sent a long breakaway pass up ice that Hall was able to catch up to before sliding the puck through Varlamovs pads. Colorado had a chance to pull even four minutes later on a five-on-three power play, but Oilers goalie DevanDubnyk stoned MattDuchene on a glorious opportunity at the side of the net to preserve the lead. Avalanche defenceman JanHejda had to be helped off the ice with eight minutes to play in the first period after losing an edge and going heavily feet first into the boards. Edmonton made it 3-0 with power-play goals just 15 seconds apart with just over two minutes remaining in the opening frame. Hall got his second of the night and ninth of the season with 2:18 remaining on a five-on-three advantage, unleashing a bullet of a one-timer from the right face-off dot. The Oilers then took advantage of the remaining time on the power play as RyanSmyth sent a pass to hit Hemsky in full flight and he undressed Varlamov with a deke before scoring on the backhand. Colorado got a goal back four minutes into the second period as a Holden point shot caromed off a couple of Oilers players before ending up in the Edmonton net. The Avalanche made it 3-2 midway through the second period. Parenteau was able to swoop in and pick up the rebound of a big Dubnyk glove save on a point-blank shot by GabrielLandeskog and hook it into a wide-open net. The Oilers went back up by two goals with eight minutes left in the middle period as Perron went in on a 2-on-1 before electing to shoot it himself. It was Perrons third goal in the last two games and team-leading 12th of the season. Edmonton restored its three-goal lead with 11 minutes left in the third period as a pass ticked off of defenceman NateGuenin before Arcobello kicked it up to his stick and beat Varlamov. The Oilers made it 6-2 with just under five minutes left as Smyth showed good patience on a 2-on-1 before hitting Eberle for his 10th of the year. It was Smyths third assist of the game. Edmonton added insult to injury with a pair of late goals. With a minute-and-a-half left, Gagner intercepted a pass and then took a nice return feed from Hall before sniping the puck past Varlamovs glove. Hall then got the hat trick with just 11 seconds left as he tipped a RyanNugent-Hopkins shot on net and then followed it up to put home his own rebound. "There is tremendous amount of skill here and we have to utilize it on a daily basis," Smyth said. "We cant just sporadically use it. If we get consistent at it, were going to be successful." The Avs play the second of a three-game Western Canada trip on Friday in Calgary. Edmonton next plays host to the Flames on Saturday. Notes: It was the first of three scheduled meetings between the two teams this season. Edmonton came into the game with a fair amount of recent success against the Avalanche, having won seven of their previous 10 games at home against Colorado. ... Deeply disappointed in Tuesdays 6-2 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes at home, the Oilers switched out a quarter of their lineup from that game. Forward WillActon and defencemen DenisGrebeshkov and AntonBelov were sent down to Oklahoma City while defenceman JeffPetry and forward JesseJoensuu were healthy scratches. Call-ups AntonLander (forward) and MartinMarincin were inserted into the lineup, the first NHL game for Marincin. Also coming in were defencemen PhilipLarsen and CoreyPotter and forward LukeGazdic. ... Edmonton goaltender IlyaBryzgalov was put on injured reserve with concussion/whiplash symptoms after being run over in the crease last Sunday in Dallas. ... Avalanche defenceman RyanWilson (back) and forward AlexTanguay (knee) remained on injured reserve, while veteran defenceman CorySarich was a healthy scratch for Colorado, which came into the game after a four-day break. ... The Avs came into the game having recorded a penalty-free game against Minnesota on Saturday, but allowed three power play goals on Thursday. Packers Aaron Rodgers Blue Jersey . - Tarik Black pulled a Big 12 championship T-shirt over his broad shoulders, slipped a title hat on his head, and then gave Andrew Wiggins and the rest of his teammates a hug. Packers Jordy Nelson Youth Jersey ., continues his run in Melbourne tonight when he takes on Bulgarias Grigor Dimitrov in the third round of the Australian Open. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- MartinJones NHL debut ended in a nine-round shootout, with the Anaheim Ducks high-scoring lineup taking turns bearing down on the Los Angeles Kings new goalie. Jones faced up to the pressure and turned away everything he saw, leading the Kings to a strong start to the Freeway Faceoff. Jones made 26 saves before his perfect shootout performance, and DwightKing scored the only shootout goal Tuesday night in the Kings 3-2 victory over the Ducks. JeffCarter and captain DustinBrown scored for the Kings, who have earned a point in 13 of their last 14 games. They barely escaped Orange County with a second point thanks to Jones, the 23-year-old AHL goalie who got a promotion after JonathanQuicks injury. "To be honest, Ive been in that situation before," Jones said of the lengthy shootout. "Obviously, the shooters are a little bit of a higher level up here, but I just wanted to stay patient and stick with what Ive been doing down (in the AHL). Jones has spent nearly three weeks as the backup to BenScrivens, who started the Kings last 10 games after Quick went down with a groin injury. Scrivens has been one of the NHLs best netminders in Quicks absence, keeping Jones out of the crease until this back-to-back set. Jones was ready for the long-delayed opportunity, even against Anaheims vaunted collection of forwards. "Once you start the day and start going through your routine, everything is pretty familiar," Jones said. "And its the same game. It was intense, for sure. I wanted to make sure I was just prepared and as focused as I could be, and try to enjoy it a little bit if I could. It was a great experience, and something Ive dreamed about for a long time -- playing in an NHL game and getting a win. It was everything it was cracked up to be." Southern Californias two NHL teams started off their season series with an entertaining game befitting two clubs entering the night with their best combined record (35-14-8) in the two-decade, 113-game history of this head-to-head rivalry. Anaheim veteran JonasHiller made a season-high 49 saves and stopped Los Angeles first eight shootout attempts, but King scored on a wrist shot before Jones stopped MathieuPerreault to end it. "Its good to see a kid play in his first game and get a win somehow," Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter said. "Hes aa pretty poised guy when you watch him. Packers Clay Matthews Elite Jersey. Hopefully this is something he can build on." CoreyPerry and captain RyanGetzlaf scored for the Ducks, still the only NHL team that hasnt lost in regulation at home. Anaheim is 10-0-2 at Honda Center, becoming just the third team to earn a point in its first 12 home games since the implementation of the shootout in 2005. "Its tough to lose it that way," said Hiller, who finished two saves shy of his career high. "I dont know if (King) missed the shot a little big, but it kind of caught me right between the pad and my glove. Its a tough one." Perry scored a tiebreaking power-play goal for Anaheim early in the third period, but Brown tied it for Los Angeles a few minutes later. Both teams had fruitless power plays during a hair-raising overtime, including a two-man advantage for Anaheim. "(Hiller) was tremendous," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "He was the reason we got a point tonight. When you have the opportunity on your stick, whether you deserve to win the game or not, youve got to put it away. That killer instinct has been eluding us for a little bit now. Weve got to find it somewhere." The local rivals finally got their season series underway in front of a raucous bipartisan crowd. The 2012 Stanley Cup champion Kings and the 2013 Pacific Division champion Ducks are both serious title contenders again this year, and theyll meet at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25 for a landmark outdoor game. Perry put the Ducks ahead when he roofed a backhand off a pass from Penner, but just 3:29 later, Stoll won a faceoff to Brown, whose heavy shot escaped Hillers glove and trickled into Anaheims net. The goal was Browns first in seven games, just his second in 14 games. Los Angeles is in an 0-for-25 power-play slump over the past seven games. NOTES: Los Angeles scratched LW DanielCarcillo and RW LindenVey for the second straight game, dressing MattFrattin and ColinFraser. ... Anaheim scratched D AlexGrant, who scored a goal in his NHL debut in San Jose last Saturday. ... Los Angeles signed the 23-year-old Jones as an unrestricted free agent five years ago during his junior career in Calgary. He rose to a starting position for the Kings AHL affiliate in Manchester, but was stuck behind Quick and JonathanBernier, traded to Toronto last summer. ' ' ' |
