It was closing on Midnight and still we waited. wholesale nfl jerseys . The mixed zone is not a place to make friends. Media stand in one spot and hold their position tighter than moms in line for that Black Friday special at Target. One by one the Brazilian players came out, many with enormous headphones on, looking down to the ground and heading straight for the bus entrance. The star of the team was undoubtedly Neymar and his presence was felt even before he appeared, with screaming and awkward shuffling starting around me. The new king of Brazilian football is a show man, he smiled for the ladies, said a few words for the men holding microphones and ran to his seat on the bus. Right behind him stood a large man whose presence was just as big for the Brazilian travelling media. Julio Cesar was smiling ear-to-ear. He had just completed another successful match, in a 2-1 win over Chile, for his country and the joy of playing again couldnt be hidden. The aggressive Brazilian media wanted a part of him and he was happy to oblige. More than any player he took the time to answer questions, hug media friends and talk his way through his evening. For the 34-year-old there was some joy in talking about the game. That Tuesday night he would board a bus, take a charter flight back to London and head to training for Queens Park Rangers by Thursday, knowing full well he wouldnt be playing for the Championship club on Saturday. The Brazilian number one, in a World Cup year, was stuck on the bench at a non-Premier League team and didnt know when he would play again. It is a unique story and one that got even more mysterious when the transfer window closed in England last Friday and the goalkeeper remained a QPR player. QPR manager Harry Redknapp had made no secret at why the Brazilian wasnt playing. Stuck in the second tier of English football with many players on Premier League size contracts, the London club had a situation where they had two good net minders. Julio Cesars competition was Rob Green, who just happens to be playing one of the best seasons of his career and is more affordable long-term. Knowing he couldnt play him, and just importantly not afford him going forward, Redknapp wanted Julio Cesar to leave back in November saying: "We wouldnt stand in Julios way and we arent asking a fee for him. He needs to play and he could play anywhere for any team. Hes just been unlucky. Robs been fantastic and I cant take him out of the team. "However, Julios a great guy and he needs to play soon, so he can play in the World Cup." Still the Brazilian waited. And waited. January came and with it came the obligatory Redknapp in a car interview on transfer deadline day. "Hes a fantastic goalkeeper and thats not just a sale pitch to try and move him on," Redknapp told Sky Sports News. "Hes not only a great keeper but also an amazing professional and a great guy. But I think hes a goalkeeper for any big club in the world. He has got every medal there is to win, the Champions League, the lot." "I cant believe one of the big clubs havent come in and taken him to be honest," declared Redknapp. None of the big clubs came knocking. This was not an indictment on Julio Cesar. His wages? Quite possibly. His talent? Absolutely not. Julio Cesar became the victim of circumstance. Signing a goalkeeper in January is extremely rare. As he can only play one position out of 11 you have to be convinced that the goalkeeper you started the season with is worth disrupting and you have to convinced that the money being spent on the wages is worth it. Goalkeepers are a not always easy analyse, in terms of their significant impact on wins and losses, and, perhaps, more than ever are looked at in terms of actual value. Are they worth what they are being paid or can someone on far less money do a similar job? Pepe Reina was idolized at Anfield but the moment his wages got close to one hundred thousand pounds per week, when they could get Simon Mignolet for almost half that they felt that was excellent business. Mignolet has been excellent at times, and has made some blunders at times as well, very similar to Reina. Liverpool, meanwhile, used the money saved in that position to strengthen elsewhere. Julio Cesar remained a QPR player on February 1st. And still he trained and trained again. His agents continued to work on deals with Brazilian clubs, trying to secure a six month loan to help him get ready for a World Cup on home soil. However, in Brazil the same issues as Europe came up. Big clubs had established goalkeepers like Jefferson, Victor and Fabio. The other clubs are slashing costs and now is not the optimum time to buy, with many of the most important games in their season coming post World Cup. Five months and counting. On Julio Cesars calendar inside his London home the harsh reality stares right at him. He knows what Luiz Felipe Scolari thinks of him and owes him to be at his best. Former Brazilian coach Mano Menezes had pushed him aside, yet when the 2002 World Cup winning coach returned, so did a real, surprise chance for Julio Cesar to put aside the blunder he made against the Dutch in the 2010 World Cup Quarter Finals. Brazilian fans hadnt let him forget that, yet all of a sudden he was in pole position to be the starting goalkeeper in a home World Cup. "I was as surprised as you," a happy Julio Cesar said back in September when he got an international recall. "Now I need to keep working hard and maintain my form over the next eight months." Tick, tick, tick, tick... And now it is five months. Ryan Nelsen started 16 games with Julio Cesar at QPR last season in the Premier League. The first ten came under Mark Hughes and they didnt win a game. Yet, the very first match, Julio Cesars Premier League debut, saw them draw 0-0 against Chelsea and the pair were outstanding against the Blues that day. Under Harry Redknapp, results remained similar but when Julio Cesar returned from injury, he was in the starting XI, with Nelsen, to play at Chelsea in January of 2013. QPR achieved a shock 1-0 win and the pair had once again helped keep a clean sheet against a formidable Chelsea attack. Its a bond that appears to have helped hand Toronto FC, previously the laughing stock of Major League Soccer, an opportunity to get the Brazilian number one before he plays at the World Cup. No financial details have been reported and we will have to wait and see how TFC can pull this off under the cap but to have an opportunity to get Julio Cesar for around ten games before he joins the Brazilian team is an incredible opportunity. Julio Cesar is a winner and can help play a significant role in changing the culture of that dressing room, a mandate that GM Tim Bezbatchenko has spoken about often this winter. He can help Gilberto, the clubs new Brazilian striker, settle in and can make a huge impact on the clubs goalkeeper Joe Bendik. The 24-year-old American is highly thought of by Toronto FC, having recently been rewarded with a new contract, and this signing is in no way a slight against him. What an opportunity he has to work for three months with one of the best goalkeepers of this era, to watch and learn how he prepares and goes about his business. When Julio Cesar departs for the Brazil camp in the middle May, Bendik will be the clubs number one again and will be better for having the Brazilian next to him. And so it appears there are many winners in all of this but, incredibly, the biggest winner of all is Julio Cesar. The odds are 3-1 for him to be one of 23 Brazilians lifting the World Cup in Rio on July 12. Less than two months before that it now appears he will be playing at BMO Field in Toronto. It is another remarkable chapter in the offseason of this football club. It shows just how far they have come that when the news broke on Friday morning it was now believable. It appeared to be a deal this team would do. Who thought they could sign a proven Premier League goalscorer at aged 31 or bring back from Europe the heartbeat of the US team at age 26? "Well be doing alright if we get World Cup stars, wont we?" Ryan Nelsen told me last October when I asked if his DPs would have to take time away from the MLS season to play in Brazil. Alright is likely to be a massive understatement. TFC have yet to kick a ball in 2014 but the knock-on effect is in full effect. The signing of Jermain Defoe got Michael Bradleys attention and both of them got Julio Cesars attention. Now Toronto FC have everyones attention. cheap nfl jerseys . HARRISON, N. Bart Starr Womens Jersey .J. -- Toronto FC were a minute away from a big road victory against a team close to them in the standings before a veteran just back from the World Cup helped steal away what seemed a sure three points. Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill, who scored twice for Australia in Brazil just a week ago, knocked a header at the feet of New Yorks Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 93rd minute to beat Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik for a 2-2 draw Friday. The result left an often dominant Toronto (6-4-2) club with just a point in its first match following a league-wide World Cup break. "Im disappointed that we didnt hold out, disappointed that I couldnt make that last save. I thought we were the far better team the entire game," Bendik said. While New York (4-5-7) held a slight edge in possession, Toronto outshot the Red Bulls 20-14 with a 7-6 advantage in shots on target despite still missing midfielder Michael Bradley to the World Cup. Toronto manager Ryan Nelsen felt it was a match they could learn from and a sign they were gaining momentum after an opening three months that saw them play the fewest league games in Major League Soccer. "We had a couple of weeks (during the break) and sort of benefited off that," Nelsen said. "Guys are staying a bit healthier, and hopefully we can just keep on it." Despite a quality first half, Toronto trailed heading into halftime as Peguy Luyindula headed a cross from Ambroise Oyongo past a diving Bendik to make it 1-0 in the 36th minute. The Reds jumped out to their best period of the game to begin the second half, as Jermain Defoe beat New Yorks Carlos Robles against the grain to even the score in the 55th minute. The goal is Defoes eighth in nine league matches. Toronto made a sub designed on going for at least a draw by bringing on Brazilian designated player Gilberto, who had been scoreless in nine previous matches. In the 72nd minute, after a dispute with Defoe over who would take a free kick from inside 25 yards, stutter stepped before cracking an unstoppable shot to the top right corner of the goal that froze everyone on the pitch, save for a helpless, diving Robles. "Sometimes you just get a feeling," said Nelsen, addressing the moments leading up to the kick between his two international stars. "I think Gil had a feeling he was going to do something, and players understand that. (That goal) will be shown around the world, for a long time." Defoe admitted he was fine with the decision in the end. "Yeah, it was meant (to be). In football, youre confident, and when he stepped up, I had that feeling that he was going to score. You can see from the celebrations, Im so happy for him." Gilberto eventually left the game in the 89th minute with what Nelson called a hip problem. Toronto were unable to fend off a desperate New York team that remained one point behind them for fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings, with a somewhat surprise substitution of Cahill for the goal-scorer Luyindula. New York head coach Mike Petke admitted that hed had no plans to use Cahill in any serious role prior to the team going down a goal. "I was hoping to bring Tim on in the 88th minute, up 3-0, so the fans could clap him for the wonderful World Cup he had," Petke said. "Obviously things change, with the score, with the way the game went. We felt, to bring Tim on for 20 minutes, perhaps something could happen, and obviously it did in the end." Matt Flynn Jersey . The second-half substitute scored two late goals gave the Vancouver Whitecaps a 3-1 comeback victory over FC Edmonton and a ticket to the Amway Canadian Championship soccer final. The Whitecaps took the two-game series 5-1 on aggregate. "I had to come in to help the team, and I was ready," Le Toux said. "Its good for me and its good for the team. Im just happy that we have a final to play now." Vancouver will meet Toronto FC in the Canadian final, which will be another two-leg, total-goals series. Vancouver will host the first leg May 16, and Toronto have home-field advantage in the second game. Toronto qualified earlier Wednesday with a 2-0 win over the Montreal Impact. Le Toux scored the winner in the 87th minute as he headed in a Davide Chiumiento free kick from the left sideline to cap Vancouvers rally from a 1-0 deficit before a crowd of 15,011 at BC Place. "The way we finished the game was excellent," said Vancouver coach Martin Rennie after his club posted its fifth straight win. "We showed a lot of energy and hunger to win the game." The winning goal came moments after Vancouvers Etienne Barbara was denied on a penalty kick as his shot hit Edmonton goalkeeper David Monsalves hand and the post. Darren Mattocks added an insurance goal in added time on a cross from Chiumiento, who assisted on all of Vancouvers goals. "(Chiumiento) had three fantastic passes today one assist in the air for my head, which I never really use any time," said Le Toux. Le Toux, Mattocks and Barbara turned the game around for the Major League Soccer club after Edmonton, which plays in the lower-tier North American Soccer League, prevented the Whitecaps from generating much offensively. Yashir Pinto scored for Edmonton as all of the goals came in the second half. The Canadian champions will advance to the CONCACAF Champions League and face the top teams in North America, Central America and the Caribbean in a bid to qualify for the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco. The Whitecaps went mainly with reserves in midfield and on defence as several regulars watched the game in street clothes. Coach Martin Rennie scratched three of his top-four defenders. Only captain Jay DeMerit started on the back row after he did not make the trip to Edmonton for the first leg. Chiumiento, starting just his second game in the last five, was dangerous almost every time he touched the ball in the first half. But the Whitecaps had trouble getting it to him as Edmonton forced several turnovers in midfield and the unfamiliar back line struggled to generate much push. With scoring chances at either end rare, tempers flared near half-time. In the 411st minute, Edmonton defender Paul Hamilton was cautioned for pulling on Camilo from behind. cheap jerseys. The Brazilian striker embellished the foul by falling backward dramatically. A minute later, Vancouvers John Thorrington received a yellow card for a hard tackle on Michael Cox near the sideline at midfield. Moments later, Cox took a yellow card for sliding into Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton as he made a save. Knighton was hurt on the play and lay prone on the field for several moments before he was assisted by Vancouvers medical staff, but the goalkeeper stayed in the game. "He came and stepped up," said Knighton. "I was surprised that he didnt get kicked out." Disciplinary issues continued early in the second half as Edmonton captain Chris Kooy was cautioned for pulling down Camilo. Pinto headed in Antonio Ragos cross in the 54th minute after the ball bounced off Whitecaps defender Carlyle Mitchell. Vancouver coach Rennie attempted to inject some offence in the 70th minute as he substituted Le Toux in for Nanchoff and then put in Mattocks for striker Eric Hassli in the 74th. A minute later, Le Touxs insertion paid dividends as he took a long, high lead ball from Chiumiento, sidestepped Forbe who then fell and drove a shot past Monsalve. Barbara was awarded a penalty kick after Hamilton was called for fouling him near the Edmonton end line within the 18-yard box. Hamilton got his hand on him, but barely touched Barbara as he went down. Just when it looked like the Whitecaps would have to settle for a draw, Le Toux scored the winner. Mattocks then booted in Chiumientos backward cross from the right side. After the goal, Mattocks jumped over advertising signage, high-fived the crowd and took a Jamaican flag from a supporter and waved it briefly. He received a yellow card for excessive celebration but none of the Whitecaps or their supporters were complaining. Notes: Whitecaps defender Alain Rochat did not dress. BARCELONA, Spain -- Espanyol scored three times in the last five minutes Tuesday to rally for a 3-2 win over third-division Mirandes in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarterfinal. J.J. Hardy Orioles Jersey . Alain Arroyo scored a 27th-minute opener for Mirandes via the post before Pablo Infante scored his competition-high fifth goal in the 77th to put the lower-tier club comfortably ahead at the Cornella-El Prat stadium. But Vladimir Weiss started the hosts comeback in the 85th before Rui Fonte equalized two minutes later. Espanyol captain Joan Verdu took advantage of a defensive error to score the winner with a left-footed shot in the 90th to make sure the topflight club takes a slim lead into next weeks return leg. Nick Markakis Authentic Jersey . Red Wings coach Ken Holland says hes excited to keep one of the young coaches in hockey. If Mike Babcock does not keep coaching the Red Wings after his contract expires following next season, the Red Wings can potentially promote Blashill to lead their NHL franchise. Atlanta Braves Jerseys . Louis that coach Randy Carlyle termed "brain-dead" and with the league-leading Chicago Blackhawks in town.Say what you will about whether or not those jerseys are aesthetically pleasing or not, its the teams 20th-anniversary next year, so they need to honour their heritage. And, man, those jerseys were purple. Like even Prince thinks that those jerseys were purple. But look on the bright side: You now have your excuse to go into that closet and once again start rocking your throwback. Maybe you had a Damon Stoudamire. And why not? He was the teams first-ever draft pick in 1996 (not Ed OBannon, thankfully) and he was named NBA Rookie of the Year that year. He was the teams first player to make the rest of the Association take notice. Of coursse, he demanded to be traded and then Kenny Anderson wouldnt even play in Toronto was eventually traded, but lets remember the good times. Bobby Doerr Jersey. What about Jimmy King?Sure, he didnt have the most impressive of NBA careers, but he was a member of Michigans legendary "Fab Five." And you know what? I bet he knew how many timeouts the Wolverines had left back in 1993. Maybe you had an Oliver Miller...I dont know why, but you might have.Look at that picture. Even hes confused as to why you would own that jersey. Besides, I dont think they came in anything smaller than XXXL. Come on, man. That stays in the closet. cheap jerseys ' ' ' |

ARLINGTON, Texas -- YuDarvish returned to his dominant form. cheap jerseys . The star pitcher allowed just four hits over eight sharp innings and the Texas Rangers beat Minnesota 5-0 on Saturday, handing the Twins their fifth straight loss. Darvish (8-4) allowed only one hit and one walk after the second inning in lowering his earned run average to 2.42 following two consecutive defeats and his home ERA to 1.83. With 10 strikeouts, he hit double digits for the fifth in his last eight starts. AdrianBeltre had three hits for the Rangers and scored Texas first run, which proved to be all the Rangers needed, in the second inning. Shin-Soo Chin and LeonysMartin added two hits each. "I thought he was YuDarvish again," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "I dont care how good you are. There will be bumps in the road. There will be times when things dont go right. And that even can happen for YuDarvish. It was good for him to go out there today and find his pitches that worked." Darvish, though, said he was unable to find a comfortable delivery throughout the game. "I just couldnt find the right one today," he said through an interpreter, "but I managed to pitch those eight innings. I cant say I was disappointed." No matter the delivery, Darvish frustrated the Twins with a cut fastball that was particularly effective against lefties. "Id say (Darvishs cutter) is probably his best pitch," said Twins DH JoeMauer, whose first-inning single extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games. "He can definitely make the ball move in a lot of different directions." PhilHughes (8-4) lost for only the second time in eight road starts this season, allowing all five runs on 11 hits in 7 2-3 innings. "Its not been going our way as of late," Twins leftfielder ChrisParmelee said, "but our hitting will come around." NealCotts finished for Texas in a non-save situation and retired the side in order. The Rangers have won the first two of the three-game weekend series with the Twins following a season-long eight-game losing streak. The shutout was Texas 14 of the season, tops in the American League and one short of the St. Louis Cardinals major league leading total. Beltre scored on a double by ChrisGimenez on a fly to straight-away centre that sailed just beyond the reach of SamFuld. The Rangers added a second run in the third inning when RougnedOdor singled, stole second, advanced on an infield out and scored on a dribbler back to the mound by ElvisAndrus. The Rangers added three insurance runs in the eighth, one on a squeeze bunt by rookie LuisSardinas. They chased Hughes, who went into the game with a 1.52 ERA in five previous career appearances at Globe Life Park. Darvishs strong outing followed a quality start by NickTepesch on Friday night to give Texas consecutive quality starts for the first time since June 14-15. The Twins put runners at second and third in the second inning on singles by OswaldoArcia and Parmelee. No. 9 batter PedroFlorimon, hitless in his previous 18 at-bats, flied out to centre with two away to end what proved to be Minnesotas only threat of the game. Notes: Rangers OF AlexRios, hitless in his last 15 at-bats, was given a day off after playing all 126 games since being acquired last Aug. 9 from the Chicago White Sox ... SOCHI, Russia -- Finland eliminated Russia from the Olympic mens hockey tournament with a 3-1 victory Wednesday, putting a stunning end to the Russians enormous expectations at home. Kyle Arrington Patriots Jersey . TeemuSelanne scored an early goal and TuukkaRask made 37 saves as Finland crushed the Russians dreams of winning hockey gold in front of their own fans. Russian teams have won eight gold medals in hockey, but none in the last 22 years. Selanne and MikaelGranlund each had a goal and an assist for the steady Finns, who overcame an early deficit and silenced the Bolshoy Ice Dome with two goals in the first period. Despite its roster of high-priced offensive stars, Russia couldnt score in the final 52 minutes after IlyaKovalchuks early power-play goal. Finland will face top-seeded Sweden in the semifinals on Friday. Russia has failed to win a medal in three straight Olympics since 2002, and even home-ice advantage couldnt end the embarrassing drought. A quarter-final exit is excruciating for the proud Russian team, which pressed relentlessly and fruitlessly in the third period after falling behind by two goals. After the final buzzer, several Russian players stood on the ice with their hands on their knees. EvgeniMalkin, who failed to score a goal in the last four games, dropped to one knee before captain PavelDatsyuk led the traditional post-game handshake line. The Russians then gathered at centre ice amid more jeers and whistles than cheers, mournfully raising their sticks to salute the fans before skating off the ice at an arena built to herald Russias return to hockey dominance. AlexOvechkin, the reigning NHL MVP and one of the Sochi Games most public faces, failed to score another goal for Russia after scoring on his first shot just 1:17 into Russias opener against Slovenia. Malkin, the Russians other former NHL MVP, also didnt score a goal after the first four minutes of the opener. Ovechkin, Malkin and Datsyuk all hailed Russias home Olympics as the most important tournament of their careers, but theyll likely have only bitter memories. Russia didnt play horribly in Sochi, winning three of its five games, but lost a painful eight-round shootout to the U.S. team before falling behind early and failing to catch up against steady Finland. SemyonVarlamov allowed all three goals on 15 shots against the Finns before getting pulled for SergeiBobrovsky during the second period. Juhamatti Aaltonen scored the first goal for Finland, the most consistently successful Olympic team in the last two decades, winning medals in four of the past five games. Russian fans realized the importance and peril of this game, filling the Olympic park early in the afternoon with cheers, chants and Russian flags. The Bolshoy crowd began chanting "Ro-ssi-ya!" even before pre-game warm-ups, waving hundreds of flags and banners emblazoned with hometowns and slogans. The tone was uncommonly intense from the opening faceoff. After Granlund took an early holding penalty in the offensive zone, captain PavelDatsyuk fed Kovalchuk for a hard shot over Rasks shoulder. Kovalchuk popped the water bottle off the top of Finlands net and celebrated with a two-footed leap into the air amid ecstatic cheers. But moments later, Aaltonen made a beautiful move along the goal line, putting a shot under Varlamovs glove arm for the KHL forwards first goal in Sochi. Bolshoy got quiet, and it became positively funeral-like late in the period when Granlund moved up the boards, broke past two defencemen and fed Selanne for the Finn captains 22nd goal in a record-tying six trips to the Olympics. The 43-year-old Selanne extended his own record for the oldest player to score in an Olympics. Finland scored again on the power play early in the second, with Granlund collecting Selannes rebound and sliding in a backhand from a sharp angle. Granlund, who turns 22 in a week, hadnt been born when Selanne played in his first Olympics in 1992. Russia put together an impressive offensive stretch after Bobrovsky came on, with Rask forced to make a big save on AlexanderSemins breakaway. The Russians continued to press in the third period, outshooting Finland 14-5, but Rask made big saves when his teammates didnt block Russias shots. Dozens of fans lingered in their seats long after the team left the ice, disconsolately folding their flags and staring at the ice. A few Finnish fans near centre ice even went up to a group of Russian fans for a hug. Michael Hoomanawanui Jersey . The Anaheim Ducks have captured top spot in the TSN. Adam Jones Orioles Jersey .ca NHL Power Rankings, finally overtaking the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks, who rank second and third this week. Winning 19 of their past 21 games has vaulted the Ducks all the way up chart after being ranked 11th six week ago. The Carolina Hurricanes got a personnel bump this week, from 20 to 15, with the return from injury of centre EricStaal, and continued strong play from goaltender AntonKhudobin, filling in for an injured CamWard. Lockdown defence in Paul Maurices first three games behind the bench, along with the pending return of left winger EvanderKane, brought the Winnipeg Jets up from 24 to 20, while the New Jersey Devils climb from 25 to 21, losing once in regulation in the past six games and getting left winger PatrikElias back in the lineup. The Washington Capitals are reeling, having lost five straight, and fall from 11 to 16, while the Dallas Stars have it even worse, dropping eight of nine to fall from 18 to 24. Among the other Canadian teams, the slumping Vancouver Canucks remain the highest-ranked, at nine, one spot ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. Goaltending woes continue to cause problems for the Ottawa Senators, who are down one to 17. The Toronto Maple Leafs have won four straight, but hold at 23, after the Jets and Devils rise up. Dealing for goaltender BenScrivens provides a little goaltending hope for the Edmonton Oilers and they bump from 27 to 26, while the Calgary Flames hold steady at 29, though they are gradually losing ground to the 30th-ranked Buffalo Sabres. MONTREAL -- When the Montreal Impact left Thursday morning to start the Major League Soccer season in Dallas, defender Heath Pearce was on the plane. Kelly Johnson Jersey . The 29-year-old American international, who is coming off hip surgery and who was released by the New York Red Bulls after the 2013 campaign, has agreed to a contact with the Impact. The length of the deal and his salary were not disclosed. Coach Frank Klopas said this week that if Pearce can regain full fitness, his signing "could end up being a steal." Pearce has played 106 MLS games over the last five seasons, including 100 starts. He has two goals and 12 assists. He also played two seasons each in Germany and Denmark and has been selected 35 times to the U.S. national team. "Hes played in the league and in Europe and he brings a lot of experience," said assistant coach Mauro Biello. "Its someone that understands. He brings leadership. These are all important qualities he can bring to the team." When he is ready to play full games, he will give Klopas options on the back line. Pearce mainly plays left back, a position held last season by Jeb Brovsky, but can also play in the middle and Brovsky can also play on the right side. The Impact open the season Saturday in Dallas and will stay in Texas to play at Houston the following week before returning for their home opener March 22 at Olympic Stadium. "Having played over 100 games in this league, his experience and soccer savvy will bring a lot to the team," sporting director Nick De Santis said in a statement. "He is a natural left back, who will give us more depth on defence and who can contribute to the offence as well. "Heath is highly motivated to get back to the level that saw him on the national team at one point in his career." Pearce became the top signing by the Impact, who made few off-season moves after finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference in 2013. He joined the Impact during training camp in Orlando, Fla. He played parts of two pre-season games and said he is getting close to match fit. The Modesto, Calif. native underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip in July. The injury had been nagging at him for a couple of seasons before he went to get it fixed. He said he had offers from other MLS clubs, but chose Montreal because he liked Klopas coaching style and felt the Impact were a "multicultured team with a ton of experience." Pearce, a three-time MLS all-star, joined FC Dallas in 2009 and later played for Chivas USA before joining the Red Bulls in 2012. He was a fixture on the U.S. team earlier in his career, especially at the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2009 Gold Cup, but has been overlooked in recent years. Babe Ruth Jersey . The Kings have gone 6-0-3 over their last nine games despite having been held to three goals or fewer in eight of 10 contests this month. Los Angeles has failed to score more than two goals six times in that span. Thurman Munson Yankees Jersey . Forte was injured on a run deep in Chicago territory midway through the first quarter, when Kansas Citys DerrickJohnson hit him in the knee.A lot of time and effort has been spent this season wondering who the Ottawa Redblacks will take in the expansion draft. Perhaps the question should have been who will the Winnipeg Blue Bombers swoop in and acquire via trade before players are made available for the Redblacks to take in the expansion draft? The theory of course being teams would rather trade the valuable assets they have no room for on their protected lists than lose them for nothing come December 16 when the Redblacks fill out their roster. Teams are free to make trades until a week before the expansion draft; a time newly appointed Blue Bombers GM Kyle Walters should use to find his quarterback of the future. There are rumours the Bombers could be after Zach Collaros, the Toronto Argonauts talented backup who excelled filling in for an injured Ricky Ray during the regular season. The deal, should it come to that, would seemingly make sense for both teams. Winnipeg would grab Collaros surely on Ottawas short list should he be maade available in the expansion draft and protect him as their QB of the future while Toronto, likely to protect Ray over Collaros, would get something in return for the talented youngster rather than lose him for nothing. Michael Pineda Jersey. Maybe the Bombers will target another QB in their one-week head start over the Redblacks to find the best non-protected talent at the position. Calgary has some intriguing options while other teams like Saskatchewan and Hamilton have backups the Bombers could be interested in as well. There could be a flurry of activity the week heading up to the expansion draft, with teams looking to fill their protected slots with the best available talent while at the same time bartering their fringe-level keepers before losing them for nothing. Winnipeg certainly should be proactive in beating the Redblacks to the punch. Ottawas loss could be Winnipegs gain. The Rouge asks: What should the Blue Bombers plan be ahead of the expansion draft? As always, its Your! Call.cheap jerseys ' ' ' |

INDIANAPOLIS - There are a few common denominators between the Indiana Pacers and the reigning champion Miami Heat, with the number of similarities growing each day. Matt Prater Jersey On Sale . Both teams were conference finalists a year ago, both clubs have an unmistakable identity that defines them, both play unselfish, defence-first basketball and in the last four days, both have reminded the Raptors how far they are from competing at their level. For Toronto, Fridays meeting with the still undefeated Pacers came to an unofficial end before most of the home teams fans could make it back to their seats. As good as the Raptors looked in the first half and as hard as they worked to look that good, Indiana reclaimed what was, as they knew it, rightfully theirs in less than three revealing minutes. "We knew they were going to come out and throw their best haymaker at us," Dwane Casey said, his team leading by as many as 12 in the first half and holding on to a two-point advantage at the break. Everyone knew they would, because thats what great teams do. Indiana opened the second half scoring 10 straight points, forcing three turnovers and holding Toronto to 0-of-4 shooting. Just like that, Torontos 24 minutes of (mostly) hard work was more than erased and the game was over. You could see it on the faces of players sitting on both benches as Casey was forced to call a quick third-quarter timeout to regroup. The Pacers had been in this position before, more than you would guess though six games this season. There was no panic, there was no time for sulking. They knew they had it. The Raptors body language spoke louder than words. They knew it was only a matter of time now. "[There are] no moral victories in this one," KyleLowry stated and RudyGay echoed minutes later. "We lost." The Pacers matched a franchise record - previously set in 1970-71 as an ABA team - winning six straight to begin a season. They havent allowed a team to score more than 91 points or shoot over 40 per cent. They havent scored 100 points, but they havent needed to. "I dont know if the history of [it] is as [important] as the fact that we have to lead on our goal," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said before the game. "And our goal is the number one seed. Were off to a good start and we all understand the importance of each game when our goal is so high." Theyve trailed at halftime in five of their six games, but it hasnt mattered. When youre a team as good as the Pacers, you can afford to bide your time. The Raptors learned that from the Heat on Monday when the defending champs started Torontos losing streak. The Pacers sent them home with that same effortless spanking, extending the Raptors skid to three and reminding them why Wednesdays disappointing loss to the Bobcats was so disappointing. They need to take advantage of winnable games because in this league, if youre a middling team, theyre few and far between. "There are no moral victories," Gay repeated. "We want to get this next one, thats it. We have to get this next one. The more we put ourselves in a hole, the more important the next game is and the next game is pretty important for us." The Raptors host the winless Utah Jazz in the second night of a back-to-back on Saturday. Its not a game they can afford to lose. George vs. Gay The match-up at small forward was a fun one in Indiana Friday night. Gay and the Pacers rising superstar PaulGeorge combined for 53 points, 30 per cent of the total offence in the game. Gay - who came into the game struggling, shooting just 34 per cent - was red-hot out of the gate. The Raptors leading scorer looked like the player of old, scoring 14 of his teams 32 first-quarter points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. He would go on to shoot just 3-of-13 in the second half, finishing the evening with an even 30 points but needing 26 shots to get there. "You can talk about PaulGeorge, but I thought Rudy outplayed him," Casey said. "They won the game, but talking about individual matchups, Rudy played the game hes supposed to play." George was outscored by his counterpart, pouring in 23 on the night, but hardly outplayed with 17 of his points coming in the third quarter when his team needed him the most and the game was ultimately decided. The Pacers all-star forward, who came into the game fifth in scoring, has had at least 21 points in each of his teams six contests. A gifted two-way player, hes every bit the superstar he was paid to be this summer. As George stepped to the line with 11 seconds remaining, he was greeted by a chorus of MVP chants. Although anointing an MVP six games into the season is as silly as it sounds, hes playing at that level and thats the direction the 23-year-old is headed. Hes that good. Learning from the best The Raptors coaching staff, like most teams with young and impressionable big men, have been using the Pacers RoyHibbert as a model for the 21-year-old Valanciunas. Offensively, the Raptors sophomore centre continues to make strides but, as head coach Casey reminds us, he still has a ways to go on the defensive end. The team hopes he will one day become the anchor that Indianas all-star big man has grown into on both ends of the floor. "He does such a good job of getting deep post position," Casey said of Hibbert, who scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting. "Where he got JV last year was reposting, kicking it out and reposting up so on that second one, if you relax at all, all you can do is pray." One technique Torontos staff continues to preach with Valanciunas is something Hibbert has perfected in his sixth NBA season. To stay out of foul trouble and contest shots in the lane, the Raptors want Valanciunas to go straight up, remaining vertical without bringing his arms down in the process. "We give him the respect of calling it the Hibbert play," Casey said of the technique. "Hes one of the best in the league at doing that and thats where JV is getting much better." "Im trying to be like him with that skill," Valanciunas noted. But its not something Hibbert - the leagues early-season shot block leader - picked up overnight, one of the reasons Casey preaches patience with the development of his young centre. "It takes a lot of time," Pacers coach Frank Vogel acknowledged. "Its one of the things I think most of the big men in the NBA are working to achieve now. I think thats the way that Roy has set the model for how its done." Friday was one of those nights that Casey calls a "learning experience" for Valanciunas. One of his roughest of the young season, Valanciunas scored just four points in 24 minutes, committing five fouls and two turnovers. He was out-muscled by Hibbert, beat off the dribble by quicker players, exposed on switches and missed defensive assignments. The Pacers star big man is a good example of what Valanciunas can grow into but he also serves as a reminder that it takes time. Jacob Tamme Jersey On Sale . It was almost exactly like the way Babcocks Team Canada won gold at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The result was a 2-1 Red Wings victory on Swedish Olympian GustavNyquists rebound goal with 28 seconds left in overtime. Karl Mecklenburg Authentic . -- Last month, RichieIncognito said severe repercussions would be warranted if the Miami Dolphins kept allowing sacks at such an alarming rate.VANCOUVER - A freelance journalist from B.C. charged in the United States after allegedly threatening to kill her junior hockey player boyfriend has pleaded not guilty to felony harassment. Twenty-five-year-old Tieja MacLaughlin appeared in court in Kennewick, Wash., on Friday, and prosecuting attorney Brenda Siefken says the womans bail was reduced from $50,000 to $10,000 by a judge. An affidavit filed by Siefken alleges that MacLaughlin, who has worked for several media outlets in Kelowna, had been dating 19-year-olld Tri-City Americans player Jackson Playfair. L.J. Fort Jersey On Sale. The court document alleges MacLaughlin was planning to visit Playfair in Kennewick last weekend when he told her over the phone that he had "cheated" on her. The document says MacLaughlin threatened Playfair, and that she drove across the border to find him, prompting the hockey player to call the police. None of the allegations have been tested in court, and police documents indicate MacLaughlin denied threatening to kill Playfair. cheap jerseys ' ' ' |

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Gary Zimmerman Jersey . -- Facing third-and-14 at the 1, Nebraska had a choice: Sneak the ball in hopes of getting a little extra room to punt or take a shot deep. The Cornhuskers chose to throw -- and boy did they wing it. Tommy Armstrong Jr. connected with Quincy Enunwa for a 99-yard touchdown strike-- the longest play in school history -- and Nebraska held on to beat No. 23 Georgia 24-19 in the rain-soaked Gator Bowl on Wednesday. "I know one thing: There will never be a longer play in the history of college football than that one," Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini said. "That was a big play for us." Equally big were Georgias failures down the stretch. The Bulldogs (8-5) dropped two fourth-down passes in the closing minutes, helping Nebraska (9-4) close out its first bowl victory since 2009. Nebraska, playing in its 50th bowl, also ended a four-game losing streak against teams from the Southeastern Conference. The streak included a 45-31 loss to Georgia in the Capital One Bowl last season. The rematch was much different. Nebraska did a solid job against running back Todd Gurley, who ran for 125 yards and a touchdown last year. Gurley finished with 86 yards on the ground. Gurley was more effective in the passing game, catching seven passes for 97 yards. His 25-yard scoring reception to open the fourth quarter cut Nebraskas lead to 24-19. The Bulldogs had two really good chances to take the lead, but Rantavious Wooten and Arthur Lynch dropped fourth-down passes in the red zone. "I think I turned my head at the last second and was thinking end zone," Lynch said. "Its one of those situations. Its not so much I dropped the pass. Its that I let my team down. At the end of the day, its one of those things that you can never forget, brush off your shoulders. "Its a win or a loss, and we lost. But I will never able to forget this one. If I run that play 49 more times, I make the catch." The drops capped Georgias woes. The Bulldogs moved inside the 21 seven times, but settled for four field goals. The final two were costly. Wooten dropped a fourth-and-2 pass around the 10 with 4:42 remaining. Georgia got the ball back with 3:18 to play and marched toward the end zone. But Lynch couldnt haul in a fourth-and-3 pass that would have moved the chains with about 25 seconds remaining. "That (stinks)," Gurley said. "To go all the way down there like that and on fourth down you just give it to them, thats a bad feeling right there." Nebraska ran out the clock from there and then celebrated wildly all over the field. Enunwa was named the games Most Valuable Player -- and for good reason. He recorded the longest play in Nebraska and Gator Bowl history. After a timeout to discuss options on third and long, Armstrong dropped back and heaved the ball as far as he could to Enunwa, who was streaking wide open down the left sideline. Georgia cornerback Shaq Wiggins let Enunwa go, but got no safety help. Quincy Mauger had a chance to tackle Enunwa, but bounced off him just past midfield. Enunwa coasted the rest of the way. "It was kind of just one of those calls where you dont have too many options out there, stuck on your own 1-yard line," Enunwa said. "Luckily our coaches trust in us as playmakers." Enunwa finished with four receptions for 129 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 5-yard TD reception in the second quarter. The second was his 12th scoring catch of the season, breaking the school record of 11 set by Johnny Rodgers in 1971. Armstrong, filling in for injured starter Taylor Martinez, completed 6 of 14 passes for 163 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. Ameer Abdullah ran 27 times for 122 yards and a score. It was his 11th 100-yard game of the season. Turnovers -- along with those dropped passes -- were the difference. Reggie Davis muffed a punt deep in Georgia territory in the second quarter and Nebraska scored two plays later. The Huskers also turned Hutson Masons lone interception into a touchdown. Mason, making his second straight start in place of injured starter Aaron Murray, completed 21 of 39 passes for 320 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. "I dont think anybody wants to go out there and slosh around," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "But I thought Hutson, as time went on and got used to the elements, did a really good job." Tom Jackson Jersey On Sale . NickBonino and MattBeleskey also scored in regulation and FrederikAndersen stopped 27 shots for the Ducks, who will face Dallas in the opening round of the post-season. AnzeKopitar had two goals, including the tying one with 3:12 left in the third period, and DustinBrown also scored for Los Angeles. Peyton Manning Authentic . Now he can be had by any team willing to pay his salary. According to a report from ESPN, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are shopping the veteran CB and plan on releasing him Wednesday if they cant find a trade partner.Leading up to SportsCentres Year In Review on Christmas Eve, TSN and TSN.ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at the continuing saga of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball involving RyanBraun and AlexRodriguez. In the beginning, the Biogenesis story that The Miami New Times broke in January sounded like yet another round of the steroid scandal that has plagued baseball for decades. The publication reported that it had obtained documents from the Biogenesis clinic that could link three players newly-signed Blue Jays outfielder MelkyCabrera along with BartoloColon and YasmaniGrandal to positive tests for performance-enhancing drugs. As the days and weeks wore on, more names emerged as possible links. Bigger names including RyanBraun, NelsonCruz and AlexRodriguez hovered around the report, but would Major League Baseball find the smoking gun on these players that had eluded them in the past when trying to pin star players like BarryBonds and RogerClemens to PEDs? Major League Baseball sued Biogenesis owner Anthony Bosch in an attempt to obtain the information it needed to bust the story open. By May, Bosch had agreed to work with MLB and by June the League began to conduct interviews with players it believed to be linked to the case. In July, some dominos began to fall. Braun wass the first to get suspended on July 22.Wes Welker Authentic. The Brewers slugger - who, after successfully appealing a 50-game ban from the 2011 season had declared he had "nothing to hide" accepted a 65-game ban, enough to keep him out for the duration of the 2013 season. And then came the flood. A total of 13 players were handed suspensions, with 50-game bans going to All-Stars like Cruz, JhonnyPeralta and EverthCabrera amongst others. Their punishment, however, would pale in comparison to what was headed Rodriguezs way. The League suspended A-Rod a total of 211 games, enough to keep him off the field until the start of the 2015 season. The hammer came down on Rodriguez not only for alleged use and possession of banned substance over multiple years, but also for what they called, "his attempts to cover up those violations and obstruct a league investigation." Rodriguez appealed the suspension and actually returned to the field to play 44 games with the New York Yankees at the tail end of the 2013 season. Playing through fan vitriol from fans all year long, Rodriguez posted his lowest percentages since his sophomore 1995 season as a 19-year-old. A-Rod the only player to appeal his ban had his appeal hearing heard over a span of 13 days in November, concluding on Nov. 21. A ruling is expected next month and the saga will be far from over. cheap jerseys ' ' ' |

WINNIPEG -- It took two tries but the Nashville Predators finally got the power-play goal they needed. Tim Brown Raiders Jersey . MikeFisher scored 42 seconds into the third period moments after another goal was waved off for goalie interference. Fishers goal proved to be the winner as Nashville held on for a 4-3 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. "We werent sure about the call but we knew we had enough time to get another one," said Fisher. "It was a similar play, just puck to the net, rebound and we were in the right spots." Both Central Division teams are desperate for points as they head into the Olympic break well short of what they need to make the playoffs. "We know we need to go on a tear to get back in it," said Fisher. "Its not going to be easy. We know there are a lot of teams right with us. . . . Thats what makes these games exciting. It felt a little bit more like playoffs tonight." The Jets (25-25-5) started the game a point ahead of Nashville (24-23-8) and finished it a point behind. It was disappointing for a team that has been flying high since new coach Paul Maurice took over. Even with the loss they have won six of their last eight, including wins over Chicago and Anaheim in their own buildings. "We were in the box maybe a little more than wed want to be," said Jets forward BlakeWheeler, who scored his NHL career-high 22nd goal. "It would have been nice to start the third 5-on-5 . . . From there we were looking at an uphill battle." Maurice wasnt happy about the penalty DevinSetoguchi took at the end of the second period that set up the power-play goal at the start of the third, but said the issue was addressed and Setoguchi was aggressive in the remainder of the third period as the Jets tried to generate offence. "The team gets one opportunity to learn from the mistake and then you expect a response like that, an understanding, a responsibility and respect for his teammates to do everything possible to get it back." Overall, though, Maurice said the team played hard. "Its just such a hard grinding game and it was a battle all the way through . . . you could see it in their faces coming to the bench, they gave it everything they have." SethJones, RomanJosi and NickSpaling also scored for Nashville. ChrisThorburn and MarkScheifele had the other goals for the Jets. On the downside, Nashville doesnt know yet how long they might be without the services of captain SheaWeber, who left the game with what was described as an upper-body injury. But coach Barry Trotz said it was encouraging to see the way the team rallied in the third period without him. "It gives a lot of the young guys some confidence. . . Its great for the learning curve," he said. Jones got things started with a perfect wraparound at 3:48 that slipped by OndrejPavelec but Thorburn tipped in his first goal of the season off the faceoff for the Jets just 22 seconds later. Josi put the Predators ahead 2-1 just 42 seconds into the second period on a slick one-two-three combo from CraigSmith and DavidLegwand. Winnipeg struggled at times to get the puck out of their own zone in the second period. They had a couple of legitimate scoring chances but the closest they came was a post on a long hard shot from ZachBogosian. Instead, it was Spaling who snapped one in at 17:18 to put Nashville up 3-1. But the Jets made up for their early period struggles with two goals in just 27 seconds. The first was Scheifeles shot into the crowd in front of Nashville goalie CarterHutton that bounced in off his one of his own defencemen and it was capped with Wheelers career-high 22nd of the season at the 18:40 mark. Notes: Forward EvanderKane was out of the Jets lineup again Tuesday with an infection in the hand he injured a fight with Tampa Bays EricBrewer on Jan. 7. Kane initially missed four games but returned Jan. 21 to score a goal and three assists in the next four games. Now he isnt expected to return until after the Olympic break. ... For the pre-game skate the Jets all wore No. 11 jerseys to markBell Lets Talk Day and honour RickRypien, who signed with the team in 2011 but committed suicide at the age of 27 before reporting and wearing the number he had been assigned. He had a long history of clinical depression. Ted Hendricks Jersey. Victoria now has a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series for Canadas senior indoor lacrosse championship. Jeff Shattler had a pair of goals and four assists for the Shamrocks, while Scott Ranger, Karsen Leung and Mitch Jones chipped in as well. Howie Long Raiders Jersey . Midfielder Michael Bradley, one of the teams new designated players, will make his debut, while striker Gilberto could see his first action for TFC in the contest.ST. LOUIS -- JonJay did not pick up a bat while missing five successive games with a sore wrist. Once he returned on Tuesday, the St. Louis outfielder quickly made up for lost time. Jay hit an RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning to break a tie and lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in a battle between the two World Series teams from last fall. "It just felt great to be back out there," Jay said. "Even better to come through." The Cardinals won their third in a row and fourth in the last five. Boston has lost three in a row. Jay blooped a hit to left off reliever JunichiTazawa (1-3) to bring in former Red Sox A.J.Pierzynski with the winning run. All-Star reliever PatNeshek (5-0) picked up the win by striking out the side in the eighth. St. Louis closer TrevorRosenthal recorded his NL-leading 35th save in 39 chances. "Today was a big day for us," St. Louis manager MikeMatheny said. "There were great at-bats from everybody." Especially Jay. "I didnt swing at all until today," Jay said. "But it feels good." St. Louis starter LanceLynn gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings. Boston starter RubbyDeLaRosa surrendered one run on six hits over six innings. Pierzynski started the winning rally with a two-out hit. He was signed by the Cardinals on July 26 after being released by the Red Sox on July 16. "Everyone wants me to say bad things about the Red Sox and Im not going to do that," Pierzynski said. "Im not bitter about what happened. It just didnt work. I dont have one hard feeling. The only thing is I didnt play well enough. I have nothing but respect for the organization and how they handled everything. I was proud to say I was a Red Sox." OscarTaveras followed Pierzynskis hit with a single to set the stage for Jay.. Tarell Brown Raiders Jersey. "They did a good job of putting the bat on the ball," Boston manager John Farrell said of the Cardinals. "It seemed like Junichi had the eighth inning well in hand with two out, two strikes and nobody on. Three consecutive base hits and that was the difference." WHERE ARE THE CHAMPS? Only 13 players remain from the Red Sox 25-man roster that won the World Series last fall. Through trades and attrition, the average age of the team dropped from 31 on Opening Day, to 28 on Tuesday. KNUCKLEBALL MAN The Red Sox have recalled knuckleball specialist StevenWright from Triple-A Pawtucket. Wright will be making his first stint on the roster this season after four appearances last year. WACHA ON WAY BACK St. Louis RHP MichaelWacha began throwing on flat ground Tuesday in hopes of returning to the starting rotation in early September. He has not pitched since June 17 with a stress reaction in his right shoulder. TRAINERS ROOM Red Sox: Newly acquired OF AllenCraig was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore ankle. He suffered the injury Friday while running to first on a ground out. OF CoreyBrown was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and in uniform for Tuesdays game. He was hitting .226 with 16 homers and 39 RBI. ShaneVictorino underwent successful lumbar discectomy surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday. ON DECK St. Louis RHP ShelbyMiller (8-8, 4.14) will face close friend JoeKelly (2-2, 4.37) in the second game of the three-game series on Wednesday. Kelly, who spent two-plus seasons with the Cardinals, will be making his first start for the Red Sox since being acquired in a trade July 31. The two served as Best Man in each others weddings in the off season. "Its going to be strange," Kelly said. "There will be some emotions there." The two sent good luck text messages to each other on Tuesday. cheap jerseys ' ' ' |

Rollins hit his 200th career homer and pinch-hitter JohnMayberry Jr. had a tiebreaking two-run double that put the Phillies ahead for good in a wild 14-10 victory over the Rangers on Monday. Rollins matched Cal Ripkens major league record by starting his 14th consecutive opener at shortstop for the same franchise. He also became the 19th player in major league history with at least 400 doubles, 100 triples and 200 homers. "J-Roll, with the big pop early, just really set the tone and got things going," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "I think it was contagious after that." The Phillies had 17 hits and their most runs in a season opener since 1900. It was more than enough to make up for a rough outing for Lee (1-0), who was unable to protect a 6-0 lead after Rollins homered in the second inning. Rollins, whose wife is expecting their second child, flew to Texas on Sunday, a day after the rest of the team did. "I didnt want to come here and then have to fly to Philadelphia," Rollins said. "The baby has let me go out and play ball for a few more days." MarlonByrd and CodyAsche also homered for the Phillies, who beat the Boston Beaneaters 19-17 in their 1900 opener. Converted Rangers reliever TannerScheppers gave up seven runs over four innings. But the game was tied when Scheppers threw his last pitch. Mayberry, a first-round draft pick by the Rangers in 2005 who never played for the big league club and was traded three years later, got his tiebreaking hit in the fifth against PedroFigueroa (0-1) for a 9-7 lead. Lee matched his career high by allowing eight runs and struck out only one, but the left-hander made it through five innings in another less-than-stellar opener for him in the Rangers home ballpark. "I dont like being on the pitching side of that, but fortunately we outscored them and got the win, the main thing," said Lee, who had a solid spring. "Jimmy hitting that grand slam busted it open. And we kept adding it on and we needed it, as it turned out." Lee got a nice ovation before pitching in Texas for the first time since starting for the Rangers in Game 5 of the 2010 World Series. The lefty also made a season-opening start here for Cleveland in 2009, when the then-reigning AL Cy Young Award winner allowed seven runs over five innings in a 9-1 loss. With starters YuDarvish, MattHarrison and DerekHolland on the disabled list, Scheppers became the first pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981 to make his first career start on opening day. Scheppers, who had 76 relief appearances last season, struck out two and walked three. "I was extremely disappointed. You bear down there. My pitches were around the zone," Scheppers said. "I was just trying to be too fine with everything, trying to hit corners. Unfortunately, I put the guys in a big hole." Texas went ahead 7-6 on AlexRios three-run homer in the third, but Philly got even in the fourth on ChaseUtleys RBI single, the first of his three hits. Phillies leadoff hitter BenRevere also had three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice. He hit .305 last season, but missed the entire second half with foot problems. NOTES: It was the earliest interleague game in MLB history. ... The front-row seat by the Rangers dugout where Nolan Ryan used to sit was occupied by former Rangers and Phillies player MichaelYoung, who retired during the off-season. ... The national anthem was performed by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, 20 years after they accompanied the late Van Cliburn, an award-winning classical pianist who lived in Fort Worth, for a stirring rendition before the first regular-season game ever played at the stadium. ... Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt holds the Phillies record for consecutive starts on opening day with 16 (1974-89). cheap nfl jerseys . PAUL, Minn. nfl jerseys china .C. - The New Orleans Saints will have to wait another week for a chance to clinch a playoff spot.PHILADELPHIA Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis spoke to Florida Panthers boss Dale Tallon on Thursday morning about the prospects of trading up for the first overall pick in Fridays draft. "But at this point," Nonis said a few hours after the conversation, "I dont think theres a deal there for us." Despite interest in moving up the ladder of the first round from where they currently stand at eighth overall Nonis didnt believe the current price-tag fit the bill for his club, particularly if it meant sacrificing young talent. The cost was simply too high. "It is for us," Nonis said of the first overall pick. "It may not be for other teams. I know that Dale is serious about moving it I think hes happy to keep it as well but hes not going to give that pick away. "Theres been dialogue, but we havent made any traction and as it stands right now, I would expect that were going to stay at eight." Having hoarded a slew of promising building blocks in recent years (including AleksanderBarkov with the second overall selection in 2013) and with the draft lacking in a consensus, slam-dunk superstar, Tallon is inclined to give up the rights for the top spot. But hes labeled the price for the pick as including a top young player, one who can step right into the Panthers lineup, and perhaps a pick or something of similar value. "Somebody has to knock our socks off for us to make the move," Tallon told TSN recently. In a different draft, Nonis might be prepared to pay that price. He was second in command to Brian Burke at the time of the 2009 draft when Burke spoke openly and aggressively about his pursuit of the first overall pick in a draft that featured star JohnTavares."That price-tag is different than possibly moving up to take the player whos going to go [first] here," Nonis said. cheap jerseys. "It doesnt mean that the player who goes [first] is not going to be a great player, but those price-tags are different and I think every team in the league would tell you that. Theres a number or a value that we place on moving up and it wouldnt include our top young players, no." Beyond Aaron Ekblad, theres a definite aura of unpredictability at the top of this draft, making the possibility of the Leafs landing a quality asset at eight all the more likely. Toronto has demonstrated a strong inclination toward selecting North American players in recent years, picking just seven Europeans since 2009 and none in the first round since 2006 when JiriTlusty was picked 13th overall. They may not be able to land the top centre theyve long desired with the eighth pick Sam Bennett, SamReinhart and Leon Draisaitl all figure to be off the board but theres potential to add front-line skill at wing, perhaps in the form of Nick Ritchie or Jake Virtanen (Nikolaj Ehlers and William Nylander are both intriguing, but neither seem to fit the current Toronto mold). "This [draft] may not have the superstar at the top, but I think most teams would agree theres some pretty good players in this draft that are going to be useful players on good teams," said Nonis. "Its important when youre picking at eight that you get one of those players." Back in 2008, with Cliff Fletcher minding the helm, Toronto moved up two spots in the draft to land LukeSchenn with the fifth overall pick, sending their first round selection (seventh overall) to the Islanders along with picks in the second and third round. The Leafs selected hulking centre FrederikGauthier with their top selection a year ago (21st overall), adding MorganRielly to their young mix in 2012. cheap jerseys ' ' ' |

Each week, we will run down the top waiver wire pickups with a focus on the coming week and rest of the season. Andre Johnson Texans Jersey . QUARTERBACKS CarsonPalmer (vs Colts)Last week: 30/42, 419 yards, 2 TDsWinners of their last three and now tied for the final wild card spot in the NFC, the Cardinals are worth keeping an eye on. And a big reason for their recent success is CarsonPalmer. During the teams modest three-game winning streak the veteran QB has thrown for 832 yards, six touchdowns and only two interceptions for an average of nearly 20 points per effort. Interceptions long Palmers Achilles Heel arent nearly as costly in fantasy football as they are in real football. Grab him and ride the hot streak. MikeGlennon (at Lions)Last week: 20/23, 231 yards, 2 TDsSpeaking of quarterbacks leading surprising win streaks... Glennon is getting some recognition now the Bucs are playing a little closer to their preseason expectations, but the rookie has put up decent numbers all season. Since taking over for JoshFreeman earlier this season, Glennon has averaged more than 200 yards and has thrown at least one TD in every start. Desperate fantasy owners could do worse. Matt McGloin (vs Titans)Last week: 18/32, 197 yards, 3 TDsVery few owners cashed in on McGloins historic debut for the Raiders in Week 11. Hes found a way to win with the odds against him at every level and while the odds of him throwing another three touchdowns against the Titans in Week 12 are small, Raiders coaches like him and think they can win with him. Youll hear all week that TerrellePryor could regain the starters role in Oakland; dont believe it, McGloin will be behind centre come Sunday. Others: KellenClemens (vs Bears), GenoSmith (at Ravens), MattCassel (at Packers) RUNNING BACKS BobbyRainey (at Lions)Last week: 30 carries, 163 yards, 2 TDsNearly 10 percent more owners chose BrianLeonard over BobbyRainey after MikeJames was lost for the season in the Bucs backfield. Rainey had 26 more carries, nearly 150 more rushing yards, and two more touchdowns. Whoops! Rainey appears Tampa Bays clear choice to replace James who was of course replacing DougMartin. With the Bucs playing better the past two weeks, Rainey is definitely worth the pickup. ChrisOgbonnaya (vs Steelers)Last week: 8 carries, 69 yards, 6 catches, 30 yardsAlthough Ogbonnaya received the most handoffs for the Browns in Week 11, Clevelands rushing situation is still an ineffective timeshare. But if you factor in Ogbonnayas use in the passing game, the former seventh-rounder has 34 catches for 237 yards on the year, he at least nears useless fantasy back status. Others: MonteeBall (at Patriots), ShonnGreene (at Raiders) WIDE RECEIVERS BrandonLaFell (at Dolphins)Last week: 7 catches, 59 yards, 1 TDLaFell has been regularly featured in this column this year in the Others section, but a big performance in the Monday Night spotlight is more than enough to earn his own paragraph. With CamNewton and the Panthers playing as good as any team in the NFC these days, LaFell is worth a shot. His 59 yards in Week 11 is about his average on the year, but hes a certainly a candidate for more touchdowns the final six games of the year. JarrettBoykin (vs Vikings)Last week: 6 catches, 91 yardsBoykin could be a great waiver wire pick once AaronRodgers returns from injury, but hes proved the last two weeks hes a pretty good pickup regardless of who is throwing him the ball. In ScottTolziens two starts in Green Bay, Boykin has averaged 100 yards receiving. He looks like Tolziens go-to target and should continue to rack up the yards; when Rodgers returns hell have a chance to rack up touchdowns as well. RodStreater (vs Titans)Last week: 6 catches, 84 yards, 1 TDFor Streater to pay off Matt McGloin will have to continue to impress behind centre in Oakland. Streater wasnt worth a spot with TerrellePryor starting but he was McGloins favourite target in Week 11, scoring just his second touchdown of the season. If McGloin is even half as good as he looked in his starting debut, Streater could be worth a flyer by connection. Others: TedGinn Jr. (at Dolphins), RishardMatthews (vs Panthers), KennyStills (at Falcons) TIGHT ENDS GarrettGraham (vs Jaguars)Last week: 7 catches, 136 yards, 1 TDGraham was hot pickup once starter OwenDaniels was lost for the season to injury but never really cashed in on his potential until last week against the Raiders. And by then many owners that picked him up had given up on him. The Texans are a mess but Graham could be worth a flyer if youre desperate at tight end. With AndreJohnson appearing unhappy in Houston, some of his targets could potentially find their way to Graham. Others: RobHousler (vs Colts), BrandonMyers (vs Cowboys) DeAndre Hopkins Jersey . Ames was unanimously named for induction into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday, becoming the 74th member of the countrys golfs shrine. Ryan Fitzpatrick Texans Jersey . Canada had opened Day 2 at the tournament with a 24-0 loss to New Zealand in the Cup quarter-final before beating Samoa 27-0 to cruise into the Plate final. The loss in the Plate final means Canada finished sixth in the rugby sevens tournament. NEW ORLEANS -- The Saints and JonathanGoodwin have agreed to a one-year contract bringing the veteran centre back to New Orleans, the club announced Tuesday. The 35-year-old Goodwin has spent the past three seasons with San Francisco, playing in three straight NFC title games and a Super Bowl. Goodwin played for New Orleans from 2006 to 2010, starting the last three of those seasons. He was named to a Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl in the 2009 season. His new deal is worth $955,000, a person familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because financial terms were not released. The Saints also signed defensive lineman BrandonDeaderick to a one-year contract, general manager Mickey Loomis said. Prior to the re-acquisition of Goodwin, second-year pro TimLelito and undrafted rookie Matt Armstrong were the top candidates to take over the Saints starting centre job, which was vacated by BriandelaPuente when he left for Chicago in free agency. The experience of the 6-foot-3, 318-pound Goodwin, a 12-year veteran, will give him an edge. Lelito saw limited action last season, but only as a reserve guard, while his work as a backup centre was limited to practice. At the same time, the Saints see the 6-4, 315-pound Lelito as a promising prospect and also have asserted that a young centre can thrive in their system, in part because quarterback DrewBrees calls out the bulk of blocking adjustments at the line of scrimmage and in part because whhoever plays centre will have a pair of veteran Pro Bowlers on either side of him in guards JahriEvans and BenGrubbs. Kendrick Lewis Jersey. However, because off-season practices do not involve full contact, it has been difficult for coaches to fully evaluate how ready Lelito is to be a regular centre. "Tim is someone that has handled the transition right now pretty well," coach Sean Payton said last week. "But he is going to have to, when we get into training camp, do it in a live setting." Like Lelito, the 6-2, 302-pound Armstrong played at Grand Valley State. Last season, he was named by the Rimington Award committee as the nations top Division II centre. Evans is the only starter on the offensive line who also started during Goodwins last season in New Orleans. Goodwin was teammates with ZachStrief for five seasons, but Strief did not take over as the starter at right tackle until 2011, the year Goodwin left for San Francisco. On the left side of the line are Grubbs, who was acquired as a free agent in 2012, and tackle Terron Armstrong, who was drafted in 2013. The 6-4, 305-pound Deaderick is a four-year NFL veteran who has played in 47 career games with 15 starts. He joined the NFL as New Englands seventh-round pick in 2010 and spent three seasons with the Patriots. Last season, he played for Jacksonville, appearing in 13 games. He has been credited with 50 tackles in his career, along with 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two passes defenced. cheap jerseys ' ' ' |

ST. wholesale nfl jerseys . LOUIS -- VladimirTarasenko and St. Louis were in trouble Saturday before a vicious hit by Chicago defenceman BrentSeabrook provided an opening for the Blues. That little crack was all St. Louis needed to put another dent in the Blackhawks bid for a second straight Stanley Cup title. Seabrooks blow to the head of DavidBackes led to a 6-on-4 power play for St. Louis that ended with Tarasenkos tying goal with 6.4 seconds left in regulation, and low-scoring defenceman BarretJackman ended the game with a drive through traffic, giving the Blues their second straight 4-3 overtime victory over the Blackhawks and a 2-0 series lead. "Those seeing-eye shots, I couldnt believe it went in," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. St. Louis took the opener in triple-overtime and fought off a Chicago rally in a game that began less than 39 hours later. Game 3 is Monday night in Chicago. Blackhawks goalie CoreyCrawford tossed his equipment around in the locker room before meeting with reporters. He said he was screened a bit on the game-winner, adding, "I had my pads together, but there was a little space there and it just kind of squeezed through." Addressing the tying goal, Crawford said: "Its frustrating, but whatever. Im not going to cry about it. Weve just got to work harder." Jackman is the longest-tenured Blues player in a career dating to 2002, and totalled three goals and 15 points in the regular season. He has two career playoff goals, both in overtime and both giving the Blues a 2-0 series lead, also stunning the Kings in the first round in 2012 -- although the Kings recovered to take four straight. "We were taking some big hits and kept our composure," Jackman said. "And in the end, one squeaks in." St. Louis rallied after Seabrook received a five-minute major and game misconduct penalty for his hit on Backes that could lead to a suspension for one of Chicagos top defencemen. The Blues captain had to be helped off the ice, went straight to the locker room and did not return for the extra period. "I have no thoughts on the hit, thats up the league," Hitchcock said. "How do you think he is? Not great. Let the league deal with it." Seabrook said he wasnt trying to hurt Backes. "I feel bad seeing a guy like that on the ice," Seabrook said. "Ive been there myself. I wasnt trying to target his head or do anything like that." Blackhawks coach Joel Quennevillle didnt want to comment on the hit until he had taken a closer look. At the time, he was worried about the game situation. "Were almost through it and I was like Oh, my God," Quenneville said. "I was more worried about killing the major." Instead of retaliating, the Blues stuck up for Backes by sticking to the game plan. Shattenkirk said repercussions from the hit are "not for us to focus on." "We really have to keep just pushing forward," he added. "Whatever happens, just keep a positive mindset, a clear mind." Tarasenkos second goal of the series was a wrist shot that banged off the right post and in. KevinShattenkirk had a goal and two assists for the Blues, who also got a goal from ChrisPorter. DuncanKeith, Seabrook and Michael Rozsival scored in a span of five shots to put the Blackhawks up 3-2 early in the third. But Seabrooks penalty proved costly and the Blackhawks got no help from a power play that went 0 for 4 and is 0 for 9 since Seabrook scored on their first chance in Game 1. Tarasenko made the most of the Blues 6-on-4 advantage after pulling goalie RyanMiller. Keiths goal late in the second ended a scoring drought of 119 minutes and 27 seconds for Chicago since a three-goal first period in Game 1. Before Chicagos rally, Miller stopped 53 consecutive shots. A Blues checking forward started the scoring for the second straight game. Porter had one assist in 22 regular-season games. St. Louis made playing to the whistle pay off, capitalizing on a late flurry when Shattenkirks slap shot from just inside the blue line beat an out-of-position Crawford with 1.8 seconds to go in the first. NOTES: Quenneville and Falcons offensive line coach Mike Tice are co-owners of a thoroughbred, Midnight Hawk, that was the prohibitive favourite but lost by a nose in the Illinois Derby on Saturday. ... Shattenkirk had a career-best 10 goals in the regular season. ... Porter, a ninth-round pick of the Blackhawks in 2003, scored his first goal since April 7, 2013, at Detroit. ... AlexanderSteen, who got the game-winner in triple-overtime in Game 1, is among five Blues players with two overtime playoff goals. The others: BrettHull, PierreTurgeon, ScottYoung and Mark Reeds.jerseys from china . Beaulieu has four goals and 10 assists in 32 AHL games and had one assist in five games for Montreal this season. The 23-year-old Nattinen has five goals and six assists in 37 games for the Bulldogs this season. cheap nfl jerseys . Make that 2-40 now. Tony Gwynn Jr. led off the ninth with a walk against Miami closer SteveCishek and later scored, BenRevere added the go-ahead run when Miami second baseman DonovanSolano bobbled a potential double-play grounder and the Phillies rallied past the Marlins 5-4 Thursday night to snap a six-game losing streak.TORONTO - In his brief 10-month stint with the Raptors, RudyGay averaged just under 20 points per contest, accounting for the bulk of Torontos offence while hitting some big, game-winning shots before he was whisked away to Sacramento. His tenure wont be remembered for any of that, rightly or wrongly, and the Kings forward has mostly come to terms with that. He wont be remembered for the shots he made. No, "Rudy the Raptor" - as Kings coach Mike Malone refers to Gays previous incarnation - will be remembered for the shots he missed. All 530 of them. Even Gay himself, given the opportunity to sugarcoat his shooting woes ahead of Fridays return to Toronto, wouldnt put lipstick on the pig that was his horrid field goal percentage. It was bad, and he knows it. Surrounded by the sizeable Toronto media army he left behind for small-market Sacramento following Kings practice on Thursday, Gay was asked if he feels slighted when hes been called inefficient. "I was inefficient when I was here," he admitted, to the surprise of those who may have expected him to dance around the obvious. "Im not anymore. I was when I was here." Fridays game will mark Gays first visit to Air Canada Centre since he was sent to the Kings, along with QuincyAcy and AaronGray, on Dec. 9 in exchange for PatrickPatterson, GreivisVasquez, JohnSalmons and ChuckHayes. He was acquired from Memphis less than a year earlier, a trade engineered by former Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo in the hopes of landing a star player that could dig the team out of its playoff hole and, in doing so, save his own skin. The experiment was short-lived. "He was put in a tough situation where he was looked on to be thesaviour," coach Dwane Casey said of Gays time in Toronto. "Thats not his role as far as [the] type of guys we had. Hes a dynamic player, a big-time talent. He was brought here for the right reasons. It ended up turning into something that wasnt meant to be." After he and the Raptors closed out last season on a high note, the team opened with a record of 6-12 as Gay struggled, putting up some of the worst numbers of his eight-year career. "For whatever reason in Toronto he was only shooting 38 per cent, taking over 18 shots a game and everyone wanted to say he was the mostinefficient player in the NBA," Malone said. "All I can base his play on is as a King. Hes been shooting the ball over 50 per cent, 20 points a night and hes a proven playmaker and rebounder as well." Nearly three months removed from his time in Toronto, Gay is enjoying a career resurgence as a member of the Kings. Hes scoring more points, taking three less shots per game while getting to the free throw line at a higherr rate. cheap jerseys. . He has shot 50 per cent or better in 23 of 37 games as a King, something he accomplished once in 18 contests with the Raptors this season. Whats responsible for his turnaround? It has a lot to do with the space occupied and the attention drawn by the Kings beast of a centre. "If you go back to his time in Memphis. when he had theluxury of playing with a very talented frontcourt in MarcGasol and ZachRandolph. he was much moreefficient with that line-up," Malone pointed out. "So we felt that he and DeMarcus (Cousins), especially the inside-outside combination, would be very tough to guard." With Gay, Cousins and breakout point guard IsaiahThomas, the Kings are the NBAs only team that features three 20-point scorers. Although the record hasntnecessarily reflected it - Sacramento is 16-26 since the trade - that trio has co-existed better than expected. As a team, the Kings rank 12th in offensive efficiency, despite dropping to the bottom of league in assists. For a collection of reasons, many of which are probably too tough to explain orquantify, Gay has found a home in Sacramento and he seems to fit. Of course, he is not theonly one with a new lease on life in the aftermath of the trade. The Raptors are now 27-14 without Gay in the line-up, jockeying for playoff position in the Eastern Conference as the Kings toil in the basement of West. Gay is genuinely happy for his old teammates, many of whom he considers close friends, but the Kings forward doesntnecessarily buy into the correlation between his departure and his former teams success. "We dont know if that would have happened if I were there, too," said the 27-year-old. "It happened early in the season. Nobody knows. Its one of those things that it has happened now, the trade happened, now theyre a playoff team. Of course, Id like to be a part of that, but Im in Sacramento now and I have to build this team." However, Raptors fans remember the missed shots, they remember the isolation-centricoffence that torpedoed their teams overall watchability for the first month of the season, but, most of all, they remember the losses. In Gay, the Raptors got what they paid for and their inevitable break-up should not have come as too much of a surprise. He probably doesnt deserve to be booed when he returns to the ACC wearing visiting purple Friday night, but he will be and when he is, he wont be caught off guard. "I dont care," he said. "Im just going out there and doing my job. Honestly, I joke with these guys all of the time. I say, If you put two rims up in the kitchen, Ill go out and play. It really doesnt matter what happens, whos booing, whos cheering. It doesnt matter." cheap jerseys ' ' ' |
