DETROIT -- The Montreal Canadiens started fast and finished strong to overcome a rough patch in between. Matt Bryant Black Jersey . MaxPacioretty broke a third-period tie, TomasPlekanec scored twice and Montreal beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 Thursday night. The Canadiens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and led 3-1 going into the third. But Detroits TomasTatar scored twice during a span of 3:06 early in the third period to tie it. Pacioretty restored the Canadiens lead 5:48 into the third and ThomasVanek added a goal with 8:45 left. "The second and third periods werent good at all. We got lucky that we found a way to win," Plekanec said. Vanek added two assists and DavidDesharnais had a goal and an assist for Montreal. P.K.Subban had two assists and CareyPrice made 26 saves. "It doesnt matter if you win 1-0 or 10-9 at this point. It all adds up the same," Price said. Canadiens coach Michel Therrien praised the line of Desharnais between Vanek and Pacioretty. "They were true leaders the way they played. They were playing all over the ice, they were hungry and did the right things." Tatars goals were his 17th and 18th. RileySheahan added a goal and an assist, and JohanFranzen also scored for Detroit. JimmyHoward stopped 24 shots. "From the start. We werent very good in the first period, starting with myself. We were turning the pucks over all over the ice, we werent skating and we werent working," Red Wings defenceman NiklasKronwall said. "But in saying that, we were still in the game somehow. Howie (Howard) kept us in there, gave us a chance. "We make it 3-3, then they go up 4-3, 5-3 and we score right away again and its still a game, but all in all we have to be better than this." Franzen brought the Red Wings to within one, 21 seconds after Vaneks goal. It was Franzens 16th goal and broke a nine-game goal-scoring drought. "I thought we played good and had lots of opportunity as far as offensively. We were just poor in our own zone on sort outs, on face-offs, which is just an easy thing to do. So for whatever reason we didnt get that done," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "But my big thing here today is just, as we said earlier, catch-up hockey is losing hockey. Youve got to get prepared, youve got to play right and you have to do it for 60 minutes and be patient. When you start chasing the game like we were tonight anything can happen. Its entertaining and all that for the fans but its not a recipe for success whatsoever." Sheahan put the Red Wings on the board and cut the Canadiens lead to 2-1 with his sixth goal 1:28 into the second period. Desharnais restored Montreals two-goal lead with 8:57 remaining in the middle period on his 14th goal. Plekanecs two goals gave Montreal a 2-0 lead in the first period. He opened the scoring 7:49 into the game, then got his 20th goal with 5:49 left in the opening period. NOTE: Detroit RW TomasJurco returned after missing seven games with a broken rib. ... Montreal LW TravisMoen missed his second game with a concussion. ... Red Wings C PavelDatsyuk, who has missed 13 games with a sore knee, is skating but theres no timetable for his return. ... Detroit C HenrikZetterberg, who had back surgery on Feb. 21, wont be cleared for contact until April 18-19. ... Pacioretty played college hockey at the University of Michigan. ... Montreal D MikeWeaver played college hockey at Michigan State. ... Canadiens RW DaleWeise missed his second game with an upper-body injury. Matt Ryan Black Jersey . "I cant say much, we agreed not to say much, but talks are ongoing and Andrei wants to stay in Montreal," agent and former NHL player SergeiBerezin told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com on Friday. "Well see where it goes. Hes played 13 seasons with Montreal. Devin Hester Jersey . That four-game skid in early January seems as if its a long time ago. Kessel scored twice, JamesvanRiemsdyk had a goal and an assist and the Maple Leafs beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight win.Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that right-handed pitcher Jason Jarvis has been placed on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of granting his release. Jarvis, 26, went 1-3 with a 9.95 ERA in four starts wiith the Goldeyes this season. Osi Umenyiora Red Jersey. . He was acquired from the Sioux City Explorers late last season. The Goldeyes now have 21 players on their active roster, including 11 pitchers and 10 position players. ' ' ' |

The Los Angeles Clippers will try to knot their Western Conference playoff series with the Golden State Warriors on Monday night when the two teams collide at Staples Center. Gerald McCoy Buccaneers Jersey . The Warriors stole home-court advantage with a 109-105 victory Saturday afternoon. KlayThompson tallied 22 points and seven rebounds, while DavidLee had 20 points and 13 rebounds. HarrisonBarnes scored 14 with eight boards off the bench for Golden State, while leading scorer StephenCurry was limited to 14 points with seven assists and seven turnovers. "I am proud of my guys," said Warriors head coach MarkJackson. "Were not going to quit. We had a tremendous will. This series is far from over." ChrisPaul flirted with a triple-double for Los Angeles, depositing 28 points with eight assists and seven rebounds in the disappointing setback. He helped bring the Clippers back into the contest, but made some critical mistakes late. J.J.Redick added a playoff career-high 22 points and DeAndreJordan scored 11 and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. BlakeGriffin, an MVP candidate this season, was plagued by foul trouble for most of the game. He managed 16 points before he fouled out after just 19:14 of action. "I kept putting myself in a bad situation by fouling," Griffin said. "I have to do a better job. I have to play smarter. I think some of us, including myself, wanted it too much. We have to relax." The Warriors were in front through most of the second half, but Paul buried a pair of 3-pointers to tie the contest. It was knotted at 105-105 when Golden States DraymondGreen worked his way to the free throw line with 24 seconds left and made both. The Clippers used their final timeout and put the ball in their All-Star Pauls hands, but a hard double team forced Paul to lose it out-of-bounds, although a foul couldve been called. After initially ruling Clippers ball, officials went to the monitors and quickly overturned the call, handing it back to Golden State. It appeared to be a classic case of the referees electing not to call a foul, instead, letting the team retain possession. While the replay was used correctly by the officials, the NBA acknowledged a foul shouldve been called. "Just prior to the ball going out-of-bounds, Paul was fouled by Green and Paul should have been granted two free throws. Contact preceding out-of-bounds calls is not a reviewable matter," Rod Thorn, NBA President, Basketball Operations said in a statement. Barnes then made 1-of-2 from the stripe, leaving the door open for Los Angeles, but Paul was intentionally fouled and the 86 percent career foul shooter missed both. Green could have put the game away, but he too missed two free throws with 6.8 seconds to play. On the second miss, the Clippers DarrenCollison chased down the rebound and stepped out of bounds. Thompson then took his turn at the stripe and made 1-of-2, sealing the outcome. "We didnt play very well," said Clippers head coach Doc Rivers. "We were in foul trouble most of the game. We played hard but a lot of times I think we lost our trust." There were no fireworks that marred three of the four regular-season meetings between the teams. For the Warriors, who pulled off an upset of the Denver Nuggets in the first round last postseason, it was a great win as they were not immune from foul trouble. AndreIguodala, a stout defender, fouled out in the fourth quarter after around 20 minutes of action. Golden State is already without its defensive anchor, center AndrewBogut, who fractured a rib and is out indefinitely. "Maybe being short-handed focused on that a little bit more," said Lee. "We feel like this is two very good basketball teams, were a little bit short- handed so our goal tonight was to come out aggressive and to come out and hit first. That didnt mean get down 10 to one or whatever happened, but thats the way it worked but we feel like we have enough players to win this series and just try to be aggressive." This series shifts to Oracle Arena for Game 3 on Thursday night. Michael Johnson Black Friday Jersey . The Blue Jackets entered this series against the Metropolitan Division champions as heavy underdogs, but they sit tied with the Penguins at two wins apiece. Columbus has arrived at this point with a pair of overtime victories, including a 4-3 triumph in Wednesdays Game 4 clash at Nationwide Arena that gave the franchise its first home playoff win. William Gholston Buccaneers Jersey . Johns IceCaps dominated the Portland Pirates 5-1 on Wednesday in American Hockey League play. OKLAHOMA CITY -- The NBA-leading Oklahoma City Thunder got their first three-day break of the season, and the Utah Jazz were playing their third road game in as many nights. The outcome was almost too predictable. JamesHarden scored 22 points, KevinDurant added 21 and the Thunder beat Utah 111-85 on Tuesday night for their second win against the Jazz in five days. "Knowing we were on the third game of a back-to-back and they were rested, they wanted to create a tempo that was favourable to them and not allow us to get back in the game," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. "They did a great job of just keeping the tempo up, attacking us at every moment they could and not allowing us to rest." The well-rested Thunder (22-6) never trailed and led by at least 12 throughout the second half on their way to an eighth straight win at the Chesapeake Energy Arena, extending the teams longest home winning streak since moving from Seattle in 2008. RussellWestbrook chipped in 16 points for Oklahoma City, and SergeIbaka also scored 16 to go with 10 rebounds and six blocks. "Serge was all over the floor, rebounding the ball, blocking shots. Hes getting better every game," coach Scott Brooks said. "His growth, his development is encouraging. "Every day he works, and you can see the work that he puts in on the floor paying off for him." AlJefferson led the Jazz with 15 points and rookie Derrick Favours scored 13. Utah started its three-game trip with a win at Memphis but followed it by allowing New Orleans to snap an eight-game losing streak. The Jazz (14-14) then fell back to .500 for the first time since they were 3-3 on Jan. 3. "Im not going to blame fatigue," said forward GordonHayward, who was held scoreless. "Thats just not acceptable. "Whatever the reason was were professionals, so back-to-back-to-back, thats our job. Weve got to be prepared and weve got to be able to play." Utah missed a window of opportunity to cut into a 16-point lead when Westbrook headed to the bench after picking up his fourth foul -- and a technical, too -- with 8:03 left in the third quarter. Counterpart DevinHarris picked up his fifth foul 40 seconds later and also came out, and the Thunder ended up adding to their lead without their all-star point guard. Durant drove for a right-handed slam to start a spurt of seven straight Oklahoma City points, and Harden nailed a three-pointer from the right side to make it 77-56 with 1:46 remaining in the third. Durant and Westbrook made brief appearances in the fourth quarter, and the starters were ppulled with a little under four minutes remaining and the Thunder leading 101-76. Mike Alstott Black Friday Jersey. Oklahoma City won 101-87 on Friday night in Salt Lake City before getting three days off in a row for the first time all season, a reward after finishing a five-game road trip and a stretch with eight of nine away from home. "It was great to get a chance to actually practice some of our fundamentals. When youre playing as many games as we play, sometimes you get away from fundamentals and youre just trying to get through the games," NazrMohammed said. "We got a chance to go back to basics and practice some of the things that we need to do in games." Utah allowed Oklahoma City to shoot 55 per cent, made only 36 per cent of its own shots and suffered its most lopsided defeat of the season. "We knew it was going to be a tough task, being a back-to-back-to-back game and against a team here who was going to be rested for three days. We knew they would come out and try to jump on us," Corbin said. "We lost the game in New Orleans and it may have knocked us off our stride a little bit. But you know what? Guys fought hard tonight. We just didnt have enough in the tank." The weary Jazz missed 15 of their first 16 shots while falling behind 16-4, with Durant completing a string of 10 straight points by hitting a free throw. Jefferson finally hit a series of shots to get Utahs offence going, and the Jazz climbed back within 31-28 after EnesKanters three-point play off of an offensive rebound about four minutes into the second quarter. Harden drove for a layup and hit a three-pointer as Oklahoma City reeled off the next nine points, and the Thunder built the lead as big as 51-35 late in the first half when Durant followed a post-up move with a pair of free throws. It was never close again. Notes: Haywards first scoreless outing of the season came after Brooks mentioned him in pregame as a candidate to be the NBAs Most Improved Player. He missed all six of his shots and committed three turnovers in 17 minutes. ... Corbin said he needs to re-think his rotation to find more playing time for first-round pick AlecBurks, who didnt play during a recent four-game stretch and then got to the foul line 10 times in a loss at New Orleans on Monday. "Thats going to be a good thing for us going forward, and we were going to need it from him. Thats why I think he deserves more time on the floor," Corbin said. ... Thunder G ThaboSefolosha missed his ninth straight game with a sore right foot. DaequanCook started in his place for the seventh straight time. ' ' ' |

CALGARY -- The Calgary Flames signed defenceman KeeganKanzig to a three-year entry level contract on Thursday. Wayne Gretzky Blues Jersey . Kanzig, a native of Athabasca, Alta., was the Flames third round pick, and 67th overall, in the 2013 NHL draft. He is in his third season with the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League. In 30 games this season, the six-foot-six, 240-pound defenceman has two goals and two assists while accumulating 57 penalty minutes. Patrik Berglund Blues Jersey . - ChrisBosh and DwyaneWade had 23 points apiece, and the Miami Heat beat the Los Angeles Lakers 101-95 on Wednesday for their sixth straight win. Doug Gilmour Jersey . With four remaining Olympic berths up for grabs, Canadas Peng Peng Lee, Kristina Vaculik, Victoria Moors, Talia Chiarelli, Brittany Rogers and Madeline Gardiner finished second overall with a combined 221.MEXICO CITY -- Martin Bravo scored three goals and set up another, all in the first half, as Mexican side Pumas UNAM cruised past Toronto FC 4-0 Wednesday in CONCACAF Champions League action. Pumas took an early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario. Francisco Palencias touch went off Toronto defender Andy Iro and right to Bravo, who only had goalkeeper Milos Kocic to beat. Kocic came out to play the ball, but Bravo struck it past the keeper. Pumas made it 2-0 in the 21st minute. Bravo finished a dangerous run into the Toronto box by sending a pass by Iro to trailing defender Efrain Velarde, who had no problem beating a helpless Kocic. Bravos second goal of the game in the 33rd minute made it 3-0. Bravo outran Toronto defender Ty Hardin to catch up to a long ball, then fired a left-footed strike that Kocic couldnt handle. Bravo completed the hat trick in the 42nd minute as he broke free of the Toronto defence onside and caught up to a long feed from Palencia, then fired the ball off the left post and into the Toronto goal. Pumas continued to carry the play in the second half, but Kocic made a pair of big saves in the 65th minute to prevent the game spinning further out of his teams grasp. In Wednesdays other Group C match, FC Dallas tiedd Tauro 1-1. Jay Bouwmeester Jersey. Dallas leads the group with seven points, followed by Pumas with four, Toronto with three and Tauro with two. The top two teams from the group advance to the quarter-finals. Toronto won its group stage opener 2-1 at Tauro in Panama City before losing 1-0 to visiting FC Dallas in a game that stretched over two days due to bad weather. Pumas lost its opener 1-0 at home to FC Dallas before tying Tauro 0-0 in Panama. Winless in five games in the Mexican Apertura, Pumas are in a four-way tie for sixth in the domestic standings. Traditionally the Mexican side uses the CONCACAf Champions League to give its young players experience. Toronto (5-12-12) stands last in the MLS Eastern Conference but is coming off its first away league win of the season -- 4-2 over Columbus. That win cost Toronto the services of forward Joao Plata, who has a strained hamstring. Midfielder Matt Stinson was cleared to play despite a foot injury but doctors balked at him flying. Defender Richard Eckersley was suspended and midfielder Eric Avila cup-tied after appearing in the competition for Dallas. Goalkeeper Stefan Frei made the trip despite leaving the Columbus game with a charley-horse, but Kocic continued his trend of starting Champions League games. ' ' ' |

BALTIMORE -- A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Baltimore Orioles third baseman MannyMachado will "probably" have season-ending surgery on his injured right knee. Arian Foster Authentic Jersey . The person spoke to the AP on Friday under condition of anonymity because there was no official confirmation of Machados plans. A decision was expected this weekend. Yahoo! Sports first reported earlier in the day that the 22-year-old All-Star was likely done for the year. The Orioles began the day with a nine-game lead in the AL East, the biggest division margin in the majors. Machado is hitting .278 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs in 82 games. Slugger ChrisDavis, JonathanSchoop and RyanFlaherty also have played third base for Baltimore this year. Machado sprained his knee while taking an awkward swing against the New York Yankees on Aug. 11. He crumpled in the batters box, limped off the field and was on crutches after the game. Last year, Machado missed the final week of the season because of an injury to his other knee. Before their 4-1 loss Friday to the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the Orioles said Machado wouldnt be ready to return when hes eligible to come off the disabled list on Aug. 27. Last season, Machado was an All-Star, won a Gold Glove and played in every Orioles game until hurting his left knee. He had surgery and didnt play in a regular-season game this year until May 1. Duane Brown . Ray gave up one run in his major league debut and got plenty of run support, especially from MiguelCabrera, to help Detroit rout the Houston Astros 11-4 on Tuesday night for its season-high seventh straight win. Chris Myers Jersey . -- DwyaneWade was a late scratch from the Miami Heats starting lineup against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night because of nerve irritation in his left foot, leaving his status for the All-Star game in doubt.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Kerry,With just over a second left in the game, the L.A. Kings puck got behind HenrikLundqvist. DerekStepan got in, swatting the puck back under Lundqvist with his glove. How is that not a penalty shot???Andrew Sullivan,London, ONAndrew: Your question relates to rule 67.4 - "If a defending player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team." In the application and enforcement of this rule it important to note that a player (in this case DerekStepan) is allowed to push the puck from within (video link) the goal crease with his glove so long as he does not cover the puck (*hand over top). Additionally, once the puck has been "pushed," it is allowed to legally pass with continuous motion beneath and beyond the body of Stepan. The puck was contacted twice by the glove hand of Stepan. The first time, to bat it forward from the goal line which caused the puck to ddeflect off Lundqvist and back toward the shin pad of Stepan who had assumed a position on both knees. Louis Nix Jersey. The Ranger player then altered his body position away from the puck and swept it under the equipment of Lundqvist with the cuff of his left glove. At no time did DerekStepan place his hand over the puck or cover it with his body. That is the reason Referee Wes McCauley did not award a penalty shot to the LA Kings but instead correctly ruled the play dead when the puck came to rest under the blocker of HenrikLundqvist. The front view replay angle shown one time on NBC demonstrates the puck in continuous motion and at no time covered by Stepan. I cant say enough about the exceptional positioning that Referee McCauley demonstrated on this play. With TannerPearson and MarcStaal crashing near the ref along the goal line and outside the crease McCauley quickly blew past the fallen players to attack the net below the goal line. The referee almost stuck his nose into the netting behind the cage to clearly observe the entire proceedings on the puck. The focus, concentration and intensity demonstrated by referee Wes McCauley matched that of the players in this pressure packed moment. McCauley gave not a drop of sweat less than the game required of him. ' ' ' |

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.Patrick Peterson Jersey .ca. Kerry, In Mondays Habs/Bruins game, there were three questionable/brutal calls against the Habs late in the game - TomasPlekanec, then DouglasMurray, then BrendanGallagher. Both Murray and Gallagher had some choice words for the refs and I cant blame them. MikeJohnson mentioned that Gallagher should be careful or he might get more for chirping the ref. What are the rules in terms of what gets you tossed? How far can you go in terms of pointing out to the ref that he just might not be perfect? Thanks! James DarlingHead of EnglishHOLY TRINITY SCHOOLRichmond Hill, OntarioJames: Every official has a unique and individualized flash point that will usually be triggered by a players physical gestures and/or a choice of words that might include profane or abusive language. What is deemed to cross the line with one official might not get the slightest reaction from another. I am quite sure this philosophy applies in the classroom as well James when you and your colleagues determine what level of inappropriate student behavior will result in a detention. A one-on-one conversation between the ref and a player can often get heated (even profane) so long as the player doesnt get personal and knows when its time to skate away. No one appreciates being embarrassed so if a player is overly demonstrative or persists in disputing the refs ruling with a public tirade witnessed by other players, coaches and the crowd, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty will likely be assessed. Slamming of sticks on the ice or boards, along with hand gestures and tossing of equipment can usually garner an unwanted reaction from the referee. Typically a warning signal is issued to a player when, in the heat of the moment, things start to escalate and the referee shows signs of getting his back up! A veteran referee that has developed relationships and established a reputation with players and coaches can often be cut some additional slack. The veteran might also be less tolerant of player/coach abuse or disrespectful conduct so players know when its time for them to pull back before they get to the edge of the cliff. The warning signal issued by a ref doesnt necessarily have to be verbal. I found the less I opened my mouth the better, since it often resulted in imposing ultimatums I might not want to enforce at a later point in the game. Statements such as, "one more word out of you; if you do that again," can invite a confrontational response from a player. If I did communicate a verbal request to a player I attempted to do it in a non-threatening fashion and by keeping any negative energy I might be feeling in check. Once I was well established, I often preferred non-verbal signals in the form of body language, a stern look or a hand signal that indicated I had enough and the player was skating on thin ice. Our seven children around the dinner table one night affectionately termed it the "Daddy Look!" In a game at the Staples Arena in 2006 the LA Kings came onto the ice prior to the national anthem. Future Hockey Hall of Famer LucRobitaille was in his final season and immediately blasted up beside me with his big trademark smile pasted all over his face. Excitedly, Lucky kept repeating that I was "Really Big" and shared with me in all his years 19 in the NHL it was the first time a coach (Andy Murray) dedicated the game day meeting to talking about the referee. According to Luc, Coach Murray said, "Kerry Fraser is the referee tonight and if he raises his arm and gives you a penalty dont open your mouth to argue; skate straight to the penalty box. If Fraser says its a penaltyits a penalty so dont piss him off!" Lucky and I laughed as he continued to tell me how "Big" I was. It is important for a referee to understand that players are never happy when they are assessed a penalty and it is best to give them a wide berth on the way to the penalty box to avoid a confrontation or to appear antagonistic. If a player chases the ref then the onus is clearly on the player and can be held accountable for his actions. I have also seen improper conduct demonstrated by fellow refs that did not diffuse player anger or establish control. Gasoline was thrown on the fire when, on occasion I saw a ref inappropriately yell at a player to, "shut-up and get in the f-**n box". Unprofessional behavior such as this by any official cannot be condoned, defended or tolerated. A referee must feel the energy of a game and attempt to manage it in an appropriate manner without taking the game away from the players. Last night in Boston there was a surplus of energy in that game that made it exciting; some of the negative energy even contributed to the entertainment value. While we can scrutinize and disagree with some of the calls and non-calls throughout the game I think it is worthwhile to note that the refs also demonstrated some tolerance and self-control. They werent quick on the trigger and allowed the Montreal players to vent their frustration before stepping into the penalty box on a few occasions. I felt the cross-check penalty to TomasPlekanec for pushing BradMarchand to the ice was a weak call and a byproduct of the incidental contact between Plekanec and TuukkaRask 190 feet earlier. DouglasMurray, on the other hand, was assessed a legitimate penalty that is most often called once he removed his hand from his stick and wrapped and spun ChrisKelly off the puck. BrendanGallagher had the most valid complaint as he surgically positioned and lifted his stick below the lower hand of GregoryCampbell to separate Campbell from the puck on a breakaway. Even though Gallaghers stick slid up the shaft of Campbells stick and made momentary contact with Campbells bottom glove the stick check had already been executed and should have been ruled a good defensive play. The fact that it was determined to be a foul by the referee his best response should have been to call a penalty shot since it had occurred from behind. Thankfully, there was no point to center ice and no unsportsmanlike conduct penalty assessed when Gallagher protested the penalty call. James, the best way for a player to respond when a ref doesnt make a "perfect call" is to do what Coach Andy Murray suggested; "go to penalty box and dont piss the ref off." I would also add, once the penalty has been served approach the ref and calmly attempt to plead your innocence. It just might plant the seed for a budding relationship to develop with the referees. John Carlson Authentic Jersey .C. -- Colorado goaltender Dillon Ward made 41 saves and John Grant Jr. Larry Fitzgerald Cardinals Jersey . BradRichards scored twice on New Yorks previously anemic power play, MartinSt.Louis had three assists in his best game since joining the Rangers last month, and HenrikLundqvist kept the Carolina Hurricanes at bay in a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night.MIAMI -- RandyWolf pitched six innings Monday night for his first victory since 2012, and the Miami Marlins beat Tampa Bay 3-1, sending the Rays to their seventh consecutive loss. The 37-year-old Wolf, making a comeback from the second Tommy John surgery of his career, allowed three hits and one run. He struck out seven, walked one and won for the first time since he pitched Baltimore past Tampa Bay on Sept. 13, 2012. The Rays fell to 0-7 on their eight-game trip. Theyre 12 games below .500 for the first time since 2007, and their record (23-35) is the worst in the American League. Four Miami relievers completed the six-hitter, and SteveCishek pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances. The Marlins snapped a streak of four consecutive home losses as they started a four-game home-and-home series against their intrastate rivals. The Rays went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. Theyve scored six runs in their past five games. AlexCobb (1-3) paid dearly for a rocky start. The Marlins scored three times in the first, when their first four batters reached. CaseyMcGehee hit a two-run single, and a bases-loaded double play scored another run. Cobb then settled down and shut out Miami over the next five innings, but the Rays couldnt rally. Tampa Bay starters remained winless in the past 15 games, the teams longest such streak ssince 2006. Jerraud Powers Authentic Jersey. Wolf (1-1) didnt pitch in 2013 and was making his second start of this year. His fastball registered only in the upper 80s (mph), but he had command of his breaking pitches and struck out five of the first eight batters he faced. The Rays finally broke through in the fifth on an RBI double by DesmondJennings, but Wolf retired the next three hitters. Wolf was signed as a free agent last month after ace Jose Fernandez was sidelined by a season-ending elbow injury. The left-hander improved his career record to 133-118. NOTES: Rays SS YunelEscobar (quad) was back in the lineup after missing two starts. ... Tampa Bay RF WilMyers (wrist), who went on the disabled list Sunday, is awaiting further test results but is expected to be sidelined three to six weeks, the team said. ... Rays RHP JeremyHellickson (elbow surgery) threw 50 pitches in a simulated game in Port Charlotte and said he felt good. Hell likely make at least three rehab starts but is on schedule to return before the All-Star break. ... Marlins 2B DerekDietrich was given the night off after a succession of defensive gaffes. ... Before the first pitch, the wives of Marlins players beat the Rays wives in a softball game. ... CINCINNATI, Ohio -- A hard-to-describe feeling comes over ColeHamels every time he faces the Cincinnati Reds, especially in their hitter-friendly ballpark.Paul Krause Vikings Jersey . The left-hander just feels good from the first pitch to the on-field high-fives at the end. Hamels pitched into the eighth inning as he stayed unbeaten in his career against Cincinnati, and JimmyRollins moved closer to the Phillies hit record with a solo homer, leading Philadelphia to an 8-0 victory Friday night. The Phillies ended their longest losing streak of the season at six games. Cincinnati dropped its third straight. Hamels (2-3) improved to 10-0 in 13 career appearances against the Reds, holding them to three runs or less each time. The Phillies have won all of his 13 starts against Cincinnati, including his five-hit shutout during the 2010 playoffs. Hamels made his big league debut at Great American Ball Park in 2006 with five shutout innings, and he remembers that feeling every time he returns. "Its a great memory and its everlasting," said Hamels, who allowed five hits and struck out seven in 7 2-3 innings, throwing 125 pitches. "Thats what I take from it: This is it, this is what I worked for since I was a little kid. I take it out there year after year." The Phillies piled up 11 hits with eight players getting at least one. "A lot of guys contributed," manager Ryne Sandberg said. "That will go a long way going into tomorrow with momentum with a lot of guys." Rollins hit his seventh homer off JohnnyCueto (5-5), who lasted only five innings for his shortest start of the season. The solo homer left Rollins six hits shy of the club record. Rollins has 2,228 hits with the Phillies, trailing only Hall of Famer Mike Schmidts mark of 2,234. DomonicBrown had a two-run double and a sacrifice fly, and JohnMayberry Jr. singled home a run off Cueto, who matched his season high by giving up six hits. Cuetos ERA jumped from a league-leading 1.68 to 1.97. "Thats what good ballclubs do," Brown said. "They do things like that. They pick each other up. I think were growing every day." Cincinnatis offence remained in a deep slump. The Reds lost to the Giants 6-1 on Thursday, with the last 19 batters going down in order. The streak reached 25 in a row before ZackCozart singled in the third inning. Their scoreless streak is at 17 innings and counting. RyanLudwick had a chance to break the streak, but was thrown out at home in the seventh inning as he tried to score from third base on a ball that bounced away from CarlosRuiz. The catcher recovered quickly and threw to Hamels, who tagged the sliding Ludwick. "An unbelievable play," Sandberg said. "Textbook. Its a fundamental play, but you dont practice it every day." JonathanPapelbon pitched the ninth to get in some work. His next save will make him the 26th pitcher to reach 300, leaving him tied on the career list with Bruce Sutter and JasonIsringhausen. The closer for the Red Sox and Phillies was the fastest to his 200th save, getting it in his 359th game. If he gets No. 300 in his next appearance, he will tie TrevorHoffman (552 games) for second-fastest. MarianoRivera got No. 300 in his 537th game. ChaseUtley had three hits and a sacrifice fly for the Phillies. He was hit by a pitch and was picked off first base by Cueto, who needed 92 pitches to make it through five innings. Cueto uncharacteristically hit two batters in the same inning and gave up his first homer in five starts. NOTES: RobertoHernandez (2-3) starts for the Phillies on Saturday against AlfredoSimon (7-3). Hernandez is trying for his first win since May 4. ... The Phillies promoted INF RonnyCedeno, who batted .286 with a homer and 20 RBIs for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. LHP CesarJimenez was designated for assignment to the minors. ... Cincinnatis BrayanPena was hitless in four at-bats, extending his slump to a career-worst 0 for 17. ... RHP MatLatos will make one more rehab start before the Reds consider activating him. His last start for Triple-A Louisville was stopped after 67 pitches because he had a calf cramp. Latos wanted to be activated rather than make one more appearance in the minors, but the Reds want him to get to 100 pitches before he goes back into the rotation. Anthony Barr Vikings Jersey . And he thinks its "irresponsible" for the Buffalo Sabres to suggest otherwise. The NHLs new sheriff reacted strongly to complaints from the Sabres on Monday after he elected not to suspend Bruins forward MilanLucic for his collision with Buffalos RyanMiller. Tom Johnson Authentic Jersey . Justin Dowling, Travis Morin and Francis Wathier also scored for the Stars (22-10-5), who bypassed Abbotsford for top spot in the West Division, and Mike Hedden tacked on two assists. Defenceman John Ramage was a team-worst minus-4 for the Heat (23-13-2), who dropped their fourth game in a row. OAKLAND, Calif. -- ChrisVolstad helped the Florida Marlins end a miserable month on an upswing. Volstad allowed one unearned run in seven innings and JohnBuck hit a two-run double to help the Florida Marlins cap June by beating the Oakland Athletics 5-4 on Thursday for their first back-to-back wins in more than a month. "It was a rough one," Volstad said. "Hopefully this is a step forward and we can keep building off of this and go into Texas and keep playing the way we played these last two games." The Marlins had won just three of their first 26 games in June before the strong starts by RickyNolasco and Volstad (4-7) gave them their first consecutive victories and first series win since sweeping the Giants across the bay in San Francisco on May 24-26. Nothing went right for the Marlins in between their two trips to the Bay Area as they fell from second place to last, fired hitting coach John Mallee, had manager Edwin Rodriguez resign and had lost 14 straight losses in one-run games before this victory. That turned around for Jack McKeons team during the three games against the offensively challenged Athletics, who did not score an earned run off a Florida starter all series. "Theres a little momentum," McKeon said. "They have a good feeling about themselves. All we need to do is win three or four in a row and who knows, maybe it will snowball." Oakland traded its longest tenured player before the game, dealing second baseman MarkEllis to Colorado for two minor leaguers. Ellis had been the only player on the 25-man roster remaining from Oaklands division-winning teams last decade, but general manager Billy Beane felt he was expendable because of the emergence of rookie JemileWeeks. "It was a difficult day for everybody," As manager Bob Melvin said. "Hes a guy everybody respects. Im glad Billy sent him to a team who might be playing for something. It would have been hard getting him at-bats here. Billy wasnt necessarily looking for the best deal. He was looking for a good landing spot for Mark." Volstad allowed seven hits and an unearned run after an error by third baseman JoseLopez in the seventh inning to win his second straight start after a career-long six-game losing streak. CocoCrisp added a solo homer off Edward&nbbsp;Mujica in the eighth inning and KurtSuzuki hit a two-run shot off LeoNunez in the ninth to give the As their first multihomer game since May 24 against Anaheim. Josh Robinson Jersey. Nunez recovered for his 22nd save in 25 chances. The Marlins struck first with back-to-back doubles by HanleyRamirez and LoganMorrison to open the second inning against TrevorCahill (8-6). Ramirez held up initially on Morrisons drive to right, but scored when DavidDeJesus relay throw to Weeks was low for an error. There was an odd play in the top of the third inning when Florida had runners on first and third with one out. OmarInfante ran from first on a 3-2 pitch that GabySanchez took for a walk. KurtSuzuki threw to second base anyway, but Weeks cut off the throw and threw out EmilioBonifacio at home plate. Florida then chased Cahill with four runs in a fifth inning that started with a couple of infield hits. Bonifacio led off with a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice. With two outs, Ramirez reached on a swinging bunt down the third-base line that AdamRosales didnt pick up in hopes it would roll foul. The ball died inches from the foul line, giving Ramirez an RBI single. That started a run of four straight hits with LoganMorrison knocking in a run with an RBI single and Buck ending Cahills day with his two-run double to centre field. "We made him throw strikes and when he threw strikes we hit them," McKeon said. Cahill allowed five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings, marking the third time in five starts that he has failed to make it through five innings. "My stuff wasnt as sharp," Cahill said. "The first two times through the lineup I was able to keep the damage to a minimum but the third time around was tough. I didnt have anything to show them. Everything was not as sharp." NOTES: Volstad won for the first time in four career starts without a strikeout. ... The error by DeJesus ended a streak of 301 straight games without an error, the longest active streak for an outfielder. ... HidekiMatsui started in LF for his first appearance in the outfield in an AL park this season. ... The As raised more than US$29,000 for juvenile diabetes research through their annual root beer float day. ' ' ' |

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Trent Cole Authentic Jersey . -- Its the $5 million question thats rumbling through NFL front offices and locker rooms alike: Is All-Pro JimmyGraham of the New Orleans Saints a tight end or a really big wide receiver? It matters to men like Pro Bowl tight end JuliusThomas of the Denver Broncos, whos up for a big pay raise and could be facing a franchise tag himself after the upcoming season. The Saints gave Graham the franchise tag for about $7 million as a tight end, the position hes been listed at for his entire four-year career -- and which he himself lists on his Twitter account. Graham contends that because he more often is split out away from the tackle, he is really a wide receiver. And, after all, he did lead the league with 16 touchdown catches last season. That franchise tag is worth about $12.3 million. The sides stated their cases in an arbitration hearing earlier this week in Louisiana and are awaiting a ruling from arbitrator Stephen Burbank. Thomas is understandably interested in the outcome. "Ive kind of been keeping ... an eye on that situation, obviously, because it could probably come back to affect a lot of us tight ends," said Thomas, who is scheduled to make $645,000 this year. "But the way I feel about it is, Does two letters next to your name on the depth chart really determine your value to a team?" When it comes to franchise tags in the NFL, it certainly does. The Saints note that Graham made the All-Pro team and the Pro Bowl as a tight end and was drafted as a tight end. Graham points to the 86 passes he caught for 1,215 yards last season -- numbers any wide receiver would envy. "Does it matter if hes a tight end, or if he calls himself a slot receiver or a running back?" Thomas said. "I mean, if youre going to have double-digit touchdowns and contribute a bunch of yards in the receiving game, I just say that youre a guy that makes great plays and are a value to your team. So I dont know why the argument necessarily comes down to either youre a tight end or a receiver. I think that if youre a guy that makes plays, thats how you should be valued." Its because top-tier wide receivers make much more money than the games best tight ends. "Thats true. So I guess thats why its a topic," Thomas said. "But Ill say again: I think if youre a basketball player, they wouldnt say, Ah, youre a power forward. Really look out for those point guards. So I dont think that the position matters. I think if youre a guy making plays for your team, then that should be your value." Denver general manager John Elway has opened talks with representatives of both Thomas and wide receiver DemaryiusThomas, who are entering the final year of their respective rookie deals and would like any deal to get done by the start of training camp next month. DemaryiusThomas, who has two dozen TD catches since PeytonMannings arrival and was the lone bright spot for Denver in the Super Bowl, figures to command around $60 million over five years after putting up back-to-back stellar seasons that vaulted him to elite wide receiver status. Yet, it was JuliusThomas who was the key to Denvers record-breaking offence last season. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound late-bloomer was a matchup nightmare for defences and the bulls-eye for many of Mannings biggest moments last season when he earned his first Pro Bowl honour. He caught the quarterbacks 51st TD throw that broke TomBradys single-season record, one of his dozen TD receptions that broke Hall of Famer ShannonSharpes team record for tight ends. And he came up huge in the Broncos two wins that got them to their first Super Bowl in 15 years. Broncos coach John Fox said the tight end position has evolved over the years to the point that "its like another receiver" rather than "an offensive tackle lined up to block." Thats not to say Fox is going to dive into the debate over whether a tight end actually is a wide receiver. "Im not getting into that," Fox said with a chuckle. "Ill leave that for other people." Seth Joyner Jersey . 2 Ohio State to a 64-35 drubbing of Texas-Pan American on Saturday. Buckeyes sophomore forward Jared Sullinger missed the game with back spasms, but that didnt stop Ohio State (8-0), as Deshaun Thomas dropped 11 points to go with five rebounds, while Scott Shannon and Jordan Sibert contributed seven points apiece. Zach Ertz Eagles Jersey . Gretzky was asked if he believes Montreal Canadiens defenceman PK Subban should be on Canadas blueline in February at the Sochi Olympics. "Im not going to get in the middle of that controversy because Stevie Yzerman obviously knows what hes doing, he won a gold medal in 2010," said Gretzky.Manchester United secured a record-breaking $1.3 billion sponsorship deal with Adidas on Monday, signalling the clubs enduring global appeal despite its worst Premier League campaign and strengthening its financial muscle for player transfers. The 10-year kit deal, worth at least 75 million pounds ($128 million) a year from July 2015 for an overall 750 million pounds ($1.3 billion), was negotiated after Nike decided that trebling the cost of its existing 13-year contract for having its name on United shirts was not good value for the company. United finished seventh in the league last season at the start of the post-Alex Ferguson era. But the eagerness of Adidas to make United kits and sell replicas is an indicator of the expected durability of the Red Devils brand -- and a worldwide following which the club claims to be around 660 million supporters. The German sportswear firm said it expects to generate 1.5 billion pounds ($2.5 billion) in sales during the decade-long deal with United. Adidas currently pays around $50 million a year to Chelsea and Real Madrid, and United could generate far more over the decade from footballs biggest kit sponsorship, describing the headline figure of 750 million pounds as a "minimum guarantee." In 2005 the Glazer family paid 790 million pounds -- just 40 million pounds more than the Adidas windfall -- for the entire club. Ten per cent of the Old Trafford-based team is now listed on the New York Stock Exchange and shares rose two per cent to $18.14 in morning trading on Monday. Adidas, which also makes the kit of newly-crowned World Cup winner Germany, saw shares rise by 2.85 per cent in Frankfurt to close at 73.57 euros ($100) on Monday. "Our new partnership with Manchester United clearly underlines our leadership in football annd will help us to further strengthen our position in key markets around the world," Adidas chief executive Herbert Hainer said in a statement. Tommy McDonald Jersey. "At the same time, this collaboration marks a milestone for us when it comes to merchandising potential." Nike has one more season as kit maker, recently unveiling jerseys featuring a gold Chevrolet logo for the start of the American automakers $559 million, seven-year jersey sponsorship deal with the team. Adidas last held the United contract between 1980 and 1992 just before the club ended its 26-year wait for an English title in 1993, ushering in a period of dominance under Ferguson. But United is now in a period of rebuilding again after going from winning a 20th English title before Ferguson retired in 2013 to a sudden slump with David Moyes in charge. Moyes was fired before the end of the season, and Louis van Gaal now has the task of returning United to the Champions League in 2015, fresh from leading the Netherlands at the World Cup. The Dutch secured a third-place finish by beating host Brazil 3-0 on Saturday. Despite the grueling campaign in South America, Van Gaal is taking just two days off before formally taking charge at United this week and beginning the tour of the United States on Friday. "I dont need a holiday," the 62-year-old former Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Ajax coach said on Uniteds website. "Its great to have such an exciting challenge. To work daily with young people is something that I dont need time off to rest for." Van Gaals first match in charge of United will be on July 23 in a friendly against the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Rose Bowl. While the new manager has been in Brazil, United has signed midfielder Ander Herrera and defender Luke Shaw. ' ' ' |

CARMEL, Ind. Allen Bailey Red Jersey . -- Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay had $29,000 in cash and bottles of prescription drugs in his vehicle when he was arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving and other charges, according to the arrest report. The cash was in Irsays wallet, metal briefcase and two laundry bags. The briefcase and bags, which were on the front passenger-side floor, also contained bottles of pills of various colours, including orange, green and white ones, the police report states. Irsay, 54, denied being drunk when he was arrested in suburban Carmel on March 16, although the billionaire was so disoriented that officers made him sit on the hood of a patrol car to keep him from falling, the report said. The arresting officer said he "believed Irsay to be intoxicated on a substance other than alcohol," according to the report. The arrest report listed a dozen pieces of evidence identified as prescription drugs, but it didnt specify which drugs they were. Irsay told the officer that he had taken several prescription medications that day but had not been drinking. The contents of the arrest report by Carmel police were first reported Thursday by The Indianapolis Star, which obtained the report through a public records request. Irsays attorney, James Voyles did not return phone calls from The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday. His spokeswoman, Myra Borshoff Cook, had no comment. The report said an officer pulled over Irsays slow-moving SUV after it stopped twice on a city street for no apparent reason and failed to use a turn signal. Police said Irsay told the officer that he sometimes has trouble finding his home. The Star reported that Irsay bought a home in late February less than a half-mile from where he was stopped. "I observed the vehicle come to a complete stop on W. Main Street for no apparent reason. ... As I was approaching the vehicle it began to slowly move eastbound and came to another complete stop in the lane of travel for no apparent reason," Officer James Morris wrote in the report. Earlier this week, prosecutors postponed an initial court appearance for Irsay "unless or until" formal charges are filed against him. Irsay was arrested on preliminary charges of misdemeanour driving while intoxicated on a controlled substance and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance. The report said police dont believe Irsay was drunk when he was arrested. Hamilton County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Andre Miksha said prosecutors are not bound by preliminary booking charges. Irsays family said after his arrest that he is undergoing treatment "to help him meet his challenges head-on" at a facility outside of Indiana. They have not identified the facility. Irsay acknowledged in 2002 that he had become dependent on painkillers after several years of orthopedic operations but said he had overcome the problem after undergoing treatment. The report said Irsay stumbled out of his SUV and failed field sobriety tests, such as having to stand on one foot. After Irsay refused a blood draw, a judge approved a search warrant to draw his blood. Those results have not been released and the results of the breath test administered to Irsay at the scene were redacted from the report. Refusing the blood test means Irsays drivers license will be automatically suspended for one year. Irsay declined to answer questions without his attorney present and was not questioned at the jail. He was released the following day. Dontari Poe Red Jersey . Louis that coach Randy Carlyle termed "brain-dead" and with the league-leading Chicago Blackhawks in town. James-Michael Johnson Jersey . Pelfrey hit a tiebreaking two-run double and limited the Rockies to three solo homers, helping the New York Mets to a 4-3 win over Colorado on Tuesday night.AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas said Wednesday it has agreed to pay former coach Mack Brown $2.75 million that would have been owed him if he had been fired, and place him in a one-year, $500,000 job as a special assistant to the president for athletics. Both options had been part of Browns original contract in separate clauses in case of termination or resignation. Brown announced on Dec. 14 that he would step down after Texas bowl game and called it a "mutual" decision between himself, school President Bill Powers and athletic director Steve Patterson. He has been replaced by Charlie Strong. Brown had reportedly been negotiating for more money. Texas agreeing to pay Brown his severance buyout and give him the job raised the question whether he was fired or resigned and why he would get both options. "He resigned," Texas spokesman Nick Voinis said. "This is what was agreed to Were honouring his contract." Browns attorney, Joe Jamail, did not immediately return telephone messages seeking comment. The University of Texas System Board of Regents, which approved BBrowns contract and most recently approved an extension in 2012, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sean Smith Jersey. Brown was under contract through 2020 and was one of the highest-paid coaches in the country at more than $5.4 million per year. But the coach who won the 2005 national championship and played for another in 2009 left after a four-year run that saw the Longhorns lose at least four games every season. The contract included language that allowed Brown to move to "another significant position within the university" at a minimum of $500,000 per year if he "voluntarily relinquishes his duties" as coach. Browns new job will concentrate on fundraising for the nations wealthiest athletic department. The contract also had the $2.75 million termination payment if he was fired before Dec. 31, 2014, to be paid in four equal annual installments. The same section said that if Brown were fired, left for another program or become otherwise unable to do his job, "all obligations" under the contract "shall cease." ' ' ' |

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius murder trial began a new phase Monday when the Olympic athlete arrived at a state psychiatric hospital for a monthlong evaluation whose terms have been described by some as favourable to the double-amputee runner. Brandon Meriweather Gold Jersey . Pistorius, who killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his home last year, sat in the passenger seat of a black sedan and spoke on a cellphone as he arrived behind a police van at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital in Pretoria, the South African capital. The judge who will deliver a verdict in the case asked the hospital to determine if Pistorius had a mental disorder at the time of the shooting, which could affect whether he should be held criminally responsible. Pistorius must arrive by 9 a.m. and can leave by 4 p.m. each weekday, and has weekends off under an order from Judge Thokozile Masipa. Pistorius, who is free on bail, has been staying at the upscale Pretoria home of his uncle. Pistorius outpatient status troubles some experts who say 24-hour observation is common in state psychiatric facilities. In the evenings, nursing staff can get additional insights into a patients mental state that complement formal questioning and other tests during the day, say the experts. "There is a benefit" to the after-hours observation, said Lee-Ann Hartman, a clinical psychologist who has worked in state psychiatric facilities. Masipas instruction came after a psychiatrist testified that Pistorius, who has said he feels particularly vulnerable because of his disability and long-held worry about crime, had an anxiety disorder that could have contributed to his shooting of Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013. The judge was responding to a prosecution request for an independent inquiry, based on concern the defence would argue Pistorius was not guilty because of mental illness. Prosecutors allege Pistorius killed Steenkamp intentionally after a late-night fight, but the athlete says he mistook his girlfriend for a dangerous intruder hiding in a toilet cubicle when he shot her multiple times through the door. There is a long waiting list for observation cases at state psychiatric hospitals and Pistorius assessment will be faster because he does not need a hospital bed, said Gerhard Grundling, chair of the Clinical Psychology Forum, a South African group. He said the observation will likely include blood tests and possible brain scans and that more specialists, including a neurologist, can get involved as needed. Additionally, in such observations, social workers gather "collateral information" in interviews with friends, family and others, according to Grundling. Other trials had been delayed for nearly a year because of patient backlogs at state mental health facilities, said Jack Bloom, an opposition member of the provincial legislature. "Everyone should be equal before the law, no matter how famous," Bloom said, urging authorities to explain the runners "preferential treatment" as an outpatient receiving speedy observation. Pistorius faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder. Trial proceedings resume June 30. The high-security Weskoppies hospital was called the Pretoria Lunatic Asylum long ago. Accounts described crowded, unhygienic conditions and staffing shortages there during the 1899-1902 Anglo-Boer war, though conditions later improved. In the 1950s, two medical experts at Weskoppies wrote in South Africas medical journal that it was undesirable to house criminal suspects together with mentally ill patients who had not been charged with any crime, but noted the advantage of 24-hour scrutiny. "Under these conditions," they wrote, "any attempt to evade criminal responsibility by simulation of mental disorder is fraught with extreme difficulty." Robert Griffin III Jersey . Its been a successful Games for Canada, which will finish near the top of the medal standings again. From repeat gold medal winners to multiple medal winners to undefeated teams to acts that define the Olympic spirit, there are many solid candidates who could be considered to receive the honour. Sean Taylor Jersey . Owens was roughed up in Torontos 20-9 defeat to Montreal on Tuesday, needing treatment twice after hurting his neck and taking a hard shot to the abdomen. In other news from Fridays practice, Jerious Norwood took most of the snaps at running back for Curtis Steele. Norwood also did some returning, although Milanovich said returns would likely be done by committee. CARDIFF -- Kim Bo-kyung headed in a stoppage-time equalizer to give Cardiff a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday and deny David Moyes team a chance to move into the top four. Kim met a free kick at the near post to rescue a point for the Welsh club and Wayne Rooney then wasted a great chance to net a winner moments later. Rooney had put United ahead in the 15th minute with a shot from inside the area that deflected off a defender and into the net. The striker had been lucky to remain on the pitch earlier when he kicked out at Jordon Mutch but escaped with just a booking. Former United player Fraizer Campbell equalized for Cardiff in the 33rd, but Patrice Evra restored the visitors lead when he headed in a corner just before halftime. Campbell hit thhe crossbar with a delightful chip over David de Gea as the hosts searched for the equalizer, while Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall dived quickly to push out a goalbound header by Marouane Fellaini to keep them in the game. Sonny Jurgensen Jersey. After a shaky start to the season, United is unbeaten in 10 games, but Kims late header slowed its revival and left the team sixth in the standings. Cardiff, which beat Manchester City at home earlier this season, is in 15th with 13 points from 12 games. Rooney had a chance to steal the win for United just after Kims equalizer when he suddenly found himself alone with Marshall, but opted not to shoot and tried to pull the ball back for Danny Welbeck instead. However, the pass was much too weak and Marshall dove down to scoop it up. ' ' ' |

"Its unfortunate we couldnt get the two points," Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said. "I thought our guys competed hard and we found a way to get a valuable point." Phoenix captain ShaneDoan will serve the final portion of a three-game suspension tonight. Doan was given the ban for an elbow to the head of Dallas forward JamieBenn. The Blues have already clinched a playoff spot, but Ken Hitchcock would still like his club to avoid its fifth loss in six games tonight. Blues defenseman CarloColaiacovo suffered an injury to his lower back on Thursday and is questionable for tonights test. St. Louis is 2-0 against the Coyotes this season and has won five of eight overall in this series. Phoenix has taken three of the last five meetings in the desert. The Vikings announced Saturday they downgraded Peterson from doubtful on the original injury report to out against Detroit Sunday, when the Vikings and Lions will play the last game at the Metrodome.LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Clippers hadnt even digested the final loss of their tumultuous season before they had to consider the growing possibility that owner Donald Sterling wont leave the club quietly. After a month of playoff pressure and incredible off-court drama, a 104-98 loss to Oklahoma City on Thursday night ended the Clippers best season in franchise history. Their summer could match the tumult of the last few weeks, given Sterlings apparent determination to fight his lifetime NBA ban for racist remarks. "I dont think thats an ideal situation for us to start next season with that still going on," All-Star forward BlakeGriffin said Friday. If Sterling and his long-estranged wife, Shelly, manage to postpone their ouster with legal manoeuvrs, several Clippers arent sure whether they would play for the team in the fall. They hope they dont have to find out. "Personally, I think the longer it lasts, the worse its going to be," Griffin said. "I think something should happen, and I think it should happen quickly. I think guys need to make decisions. I dont think anybody wants this to drag out -- except for, you know, one or two people. I think it just needs to be swift. We can make our decision, they can make their decision, and make a change." A few weeks after the players dumped their warm-up jerseys at centre court in Oakland in a gesture of solidarity against Sterling, the Clippers are clearly hoping they wont have to return in the fall with the saga still hanging over the franchise. "I dont anticipate that being how its going to be," Griffin said. "And if it still is, Ill make a decision then, but its not something thats ideal." Guard J.J.Redick predicts the process of removing Sterling will be lengthy, saying the Clippers realize "things will be in flux for a while." "I cant imagine a scenario where we start the season next year and hes the owner and all is kosher," Redick added. "He may be the owner when we start the season next year still, but I would imagine that there would be some legal proceedings ongoing if thats the scenario." Coach Doc Rivers didnt speak to the media on Friday, but the franchises shepherd through the last few weeks made it clear Thursday night that he planss to return to the Clippers. Derrick Shelby Dolphins Jersey. "I told them were going to have our day," Rivers said. "This is not the end. This is the beginning for us. ... Like Ive said before, Im under contract. I have no plans of going anywhere, as far as I know." Although Griffin, ChrisPaul and their teammates were devastated by their final losses to the Thunder, Los Angeles will have plenty to savour. Although the Clippers had legitimate dreams of NBA title contention after acquiring Rivers from Boston last June, theyll have to settle for another division title and another learning experience on their path to a championship. "We definitely have to go through this," Griffin said. "Winning -- nobody has the formula. The more I lose, every time I lose, every time we lose as a team, its like I figure out how not to do it. I dont want to keep this up, but it is a necessary adversity that you have to go through as a player to get to where you want. Ive heard guys say that makes it that much sweeter when you do win." The Clippers 57-25 record was the best in franchise history, and their 113 wins over the last two years dwarf any other two-year stretch for a long-struggling franchise. Los Angeles won the Pacific Division for the second straight year and the second time in franchise history. Their first-round series against Golden State would have been taxing even without the distraction of Sterling, but Los Angeles hung on in the fourth quarter of Game 7 at home to finish off the Warriors. Paul and Griffin got the Clippers to the brink of a breakthrough win in Game 5 in Oklahoma City, leading by 13 points with less than four minutes to play -- but Pauls turnovers and fouls in the final seconds allowed the Thunder to grab an astonishing comeback victory. Los Angeles again failed to execute late in Game 6, leading to their ouster and a disappointed crowd at Staples Center. The Clippers earned just their third playoff series victory since Sterling bought the franchise 33 years ago, but couldnt advance to the conference finals for the first time in club history. "You wait your whole life to play with a group of guys like that, and you hope thats the group you end up winning with," Redick said. "When it doesnt happen, its devastating." ' ' ' |

I really got into their convention
I n 1956, I finally got a brother, and our family finally got a television set. My brother, Roger Cassidy Clinton, was born on July 25, his fathers birthday. I was so happy. Mother and Daddy had been trying to have Uggs on sale a baby for some time (a couple of years earlier shed had a miscarriage). I think she, and probably he too, thought it might save their marriage. Daddys response was not auspicious. I was with Mammaw and Papaw when Mother delivered by caesarean section. Daddy picked me up and took me to see her, then brought me home and left. He had been drinking for the last few months, and instead of making him happy Uggs outlet and responsible, the birth of his only son prompted him to run back to the bottle.
Along with the excitement of a new baby in the house was the thrill of the new TV. There were lots of shows and entertainers for kids: cartoons, Captain Kangaroo and Howdy Doody, with Buffalo Bob Smith, whom I especially liked. And there was baseball: Mickey Mantle and the Yankees, ugg womens boots sale Stan Musial and the Cardinals, and my all-time favorite, Willie Mays and the old New York Giants.
But strange as it was for a kid of ten years old, what really dominated my TV viewing that summer were the Republican and Democratic conventions. I sat on the floor right in front UGGS on sale usa of the TV and watched them both, transfixed. It sounds crazy, but I felt right at home in the world of politics and politicians. I liked President Eisenhower and enjoyed seeing him renominated, but we were Democrats, so I really got into their convention. Governor Frank Clement of Tennessee gave a rousing keynote address. There was an exciting contest for the vice-presidential nomination between young Senator John F. Kennedy and the eventual victor, Senator Estes Kefauver, who served Tennessee in the Senate with Al Gores father. When Adlai Stevenson, the nominee in 1952, accepted his partys call to run again, he said he had prayed this cup would pass from me. I admired Stevensons intelligence and eloquence, but even then I couldnt understand why anyone wouldnt want the chance to be President. UGGS for cheap online usa Now I think what he didnt want was to lead another losing effort. I do understand that. Ive lost a couple of elections myself, though I never fought a battle I didnt first convince myself I could win. |

I didnt spend all my time watching TV. I still saw all the movies I could. Hot Springs had two old-fashioned movie houses, the Paramount and the Malco, with big stages on which touring western stars appeared on the weekends. UGG boots outlet I saw Lash LaRue, all decked out in cowboy black, do his tricks with a bullwhip, and Gail Davis, who played Annie Oakley on TV, give a shooting exhibition.
Elvis Presley began to make UGG Boots uk movies in the late fifties. I loved Elvis. I could sing all his songs, as well as the Jordanaires backgrounds. I admired him for doing his military service and was fascinated when he married his beautiful young wife, Priscilla. Unlike most parents, who thought his gyrations obscene, Mother loved Elvis, too, maybe even more than I did. We watched his legendary performance on The Ed Sullivan Show together, and laughed when the cameras cut off his lower body movements to protect us from the indecency. Beyond his music, UGG Boots uk sale I identified with his small-town southern roots. And I thought he had a good heart. Steve Clark, a friend of mine who served as attorney general when I was governor, once took his little sister, who was dying of Cheap UGGS cancer, to see Elvis perform in Memphis. When Elvis heard about the little girl, he put her and her brother in the front row, and after the concert he brought her up onstage and talked to her for a good while. I never forgot that.
Elviss first movie, Love Me Tender, was my favorite and remains so, though I also liked Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, and Blue Hawaii. After that, his movies got UGG boots sale more saccharine and predictable. The interesting thing about Love Me Tender, a postCivil War western, is that Elvis, already a national sex symbol, got the girl, Debra Paget, but only because she thought his older brother, whom she really loved, had been killed in the war. At the end of the film, Elvis gets shot and dies, leaving his brother with his wife. |

in the face of his adversity
I never quite escaped Elvis. In the 92 campaign, some members of my staff nicknamed me Elvis. A few years later, when I appointed Kim Wardlaw of Los Angeles to a federal judgeship, she was thoughtful UGG boots womens enough to send me a scarf Elvis had worn and signed for her at one of his concerts in the early seventies, when she was nineteen. I still have it in my music room. And I confess: I still love Elvis.
My favorite movies during this time were the biblical epics: The Robe, Demetrius and Uggs boots outlet the Gladiators, Samson and Delilah, Ben-Hur, and especially The Ten Commandments, the first movie I recall paying more than a dime to see. I saw The Ten Commandments when Mother and Daddy were on a brief trip to Las Vegas. I took a sack lunch and sat through the whole thing twice for the price of one ticket. Years later, womens UGGS on sale cheap when I welcomed Charlton Heston to the White House as a Kennedy Center honoree, he was president of the National Rifle Association and a virulent critic of my legislative efforts to keep guns away from criminals and children. I joked to him and the audience that I liked him better as Moses than in his present role. To his credit, he took it in good UGG Boots Clearance humor.
In 1957, my grandfathers lungs finally gave out. He died in UGG boots outlet the relatively new Ouachita Hospital, where Mother worked. He was only fifty-six years old. Too much of his life had been occupied with economic woes, health problems, and marital strife, yet he always found things to enjoy in the face of his adversity. And he loved Mother and me more than life. His love, and the things he taught me, mostly by example, including appreciation for the gifts of daily life and the problems of other people, made me better than I could have been without him. |

but another three terms
Nineteen fifty-seven was also the year of the Little Rock Central High crisis. In September, nine black kids, supported by Daisy Bates, the editor of the Arkansas State Press, Little Rocks black newspaper, integrated Little Rock UGGS on sale Central High School. Governor Faubus, eager to break Arkansas tradition of governors serving only two terms, abandoned his familys progressive tradition (his father had voted for Eugene Debs, the perpetual Socialist candidate for President) and called out the National Guard to prevent the integration. Then President Dwight Eisenhower federalized the troops to protect the students, and they went to school through angry mobs shouting racist epithets. Most of my friends were either against integration or apparently unconcerned. I didnt say too much about it, probably because my family was not especially political, but I hated what Faubus did. Though Faubus had inflicted lasting damage to the states image, he had assured UGGS for cheap himself not only a third two-year term but another three terms beyond that. Later he tried comebacks against Dale Bumpers, UGG womens boots David Pryor, and me, but the state had moved beyond reaction by then.
The Little Rock Nine became a symbol of courage in the quest for equality. In 1987, on the thirtieth anniversary of the crisis, as governor I invited the Little Rock Nine back. I held a reception for them at the Governors Mansion and took them to the room where Governor Faubus had orchestrated the campaign to keep them out of school. In 1997, we had a big ceremony on the lawn of Central High for the fortieth anniversary. After the program, Governor Mike Huckabee and I held open the doors of Central High as the nine walked through. Elizabeth Eckford, who at fifteen was deeply seared emotionally by vicious harassment as she walked alone through an UGGS on sale angry mob, was reconciled with Hazel Massery, one of the girls who had taunted her UGG Boots Sale forty years earlier. In 2000, at a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, I presented the Little Rock Nine with the Congressional Gold Medal, an honor initiated by Senator Dale Bumpers. In that late summer of 1957, the nine helped to set all of us, white and black alike, free from the dark shackles of segregation and discrimination. In so doing, they did more for me than I could ever do for them. But I hope that what I did do for them, and for civil rights, in the years afterward honored the lessons I learned more than fifty years ago in my grandfathers store. |

I went to the Cotton Bowl
In the summer of 1957 and again after Christmas that year, I took my first trips out of Arkansas since going to New Orleans to see Mother. Both times I got womens UGG boots on a Trailways bus bound for Dallas to visit Aunt Otie. It was a luxurious bus for the time, with an attendant who served little sandwiches. I ate a lot of womens UGG boots sale them.
Dallas was the third real city I had been in. I visited Little Rock on a fifth-grade field trip to the state Capitol, the highlight of which was a visit to the governors office with the chance to sit in the absent governors chair. It made such an impression on me that years later I often took pictures with children sitting in my chair both in the governors office and in the Oval Office.
The trips to Dallas were remarkable to me for three reasons, beyond the great Mexican food, the womens UGG boots clearance zoo, and the most beautiful miniature golf course Id ever seen. First, I got to meet some of my fathers relatives. His younger brother, Glenn Blythe, was the constable of Irving, a suburb of Dallas. He was a big, handsome man, and UGGS on sale usa being with him made me feel connected to my father. Sadly, he also died too young, at forty-eight, of a stroke. My fathers niece, Ann Grigsby, had been a friend of Mothers since she married my father. On those trips she became a lifetime friend, telling me stories about my father and about what Mother was UGG womens boots like as a young bride. Ann remains my closest link to my Blythe family heritage.
Second, on New Years Day 1958, I went to the Cotton Bowl, my first college football game. Rice, led by quarterback King Hill, played Navy, whose great running back Joe Bellino won the Heisman Trophy two years later. I sat in the end zone but felt as if I were on a throne, as Navy won 207. |

I wanted to hear him
Third, just after Christmas I went to the Uggs clearance movies by myself on an afternoon when Otie had to work. I think The Bridge on the River Kwai was showing. I loved the movie, but I didnt like the fact that I had to buy an adult ticket even though I wasnt yet twelve. I was so big for my age, the ticket seller didnt believe me. It was the first time in my life someone refused to take my word. This hurt, but I learned an important difference between big impersonal cities and small towns, and I began my long preparation for life in Washington, where no one takes your word for anything.
I started the 195859 school year at the junior high school. It was right across the street from Ouachita Hospital and adjacent to Hot Springs High School. Both school buildings were dark red brick. The high school was four stories high, UGG boots cheap wholesale with a great old auditorium and classic lines befitting its 1917 vintage. The junior high was smaller and more pedestrian but still represented an important new phase of my life. The biggest thing that happened to me that year, however, had nothing to do with school. One of the Sunday-school teachers offered to take a few of the boys in our church to Little Rock to hear Billy Graham preach in his crusade in War Memorial Stadium, where the Razorbacks played. Racial tensions were still high in 1958. Little Rocks schools were closed in UGG boots cheap uk a last-gasp effort to stop integration, its kids dispersed to schools in nearby towns. Segregationists from the White Citizens Council and other quarters suggested that, given the tense atmosphere, it would be better if the Reverend Graham restricted admission to the crusade to whites only. He replied that Jesus loved all sinners, that everyone needed a chance to hear the word, and therefore that he would cancel the crusade rather than preach to Ugg boots on sale a segregated audience. Back then, Billy Graham was the living embodiment of Southern Baptist authority, the largest religious figure in the South, perhaps in the nation. I wanted to hear him preach even more after he took the stand he did. The segregationists backed down, and the Reverend Graham delivered a powerful message in his trademark twenty minutes. When he gave the invitation for people to come down onto the football field to become Christians Uggs clearance or to rededicate their lives to Christ, hundreds of blacks and whites came down the stadium aisles together, stood together, and prayed together. It was a powerful counterpoint to the racist politics sweeping across the South. I loved Billy Graham for doing that. For months after that I regularly sent part of my small allowance to support his ministry. |

I couldnt prove would create a world
Thirty years later, Billy came back to Little Rock for another crusade in War Memorial Stadium. As governor, I was honored to sit on the stage with him one night and even more to go with him and my friend Mike Coulson to visit my pastor and Billys old friend W. O. Vaught, who was dying of cancer. It was amazing to listen to these two men of God discussing death, their fears, and their faith. When Billy got up to leave, he held Dr. UGG boots sale toddler Vaughts hand in his and said, W.O., it wont be long now for both of us. Ill see you soon, just outside the Eastern Gate, the entrance to the Holy City.
When I became President, Billy and Ruth Graham visited Hillary and me in the White House residence. Billy prayed with me in the Oval Office, and wrote inspiring letters of instruction and encouragement UGG boots sale usa in my times of trial. In all his dealings with me, just as in that crucial crusade in 1958, Billy Graham lived his faith.
Junior high school brought a whole new set of experiences and challenges, as I began to learn more about my mind, my body, my spirit, and my little world. I liked most of what I learned about myself but not all of it. And some UGG boots cheap of what came into my head and life scared the living hell out of me, including anger at Daddy, the first stirrings of sexual feelings toward girls, and doubts about my religious convictions, which I think developed because I couldnt understand why a God whose existence I couldnt prove would create a world in which so many bad things happened.
My interest in music grew. I was now going to junior high band practices every day, looking forward to marching at football game halftimes and in the Christmas parade, to the concerts, and to the regional and state band festivals, at which judges graded the bands as well as UGG boots cheap online solo and ensemble performances. I won a fair number of medals in junior high, and when I didnt do so well, it was invariably because I tried to perform a piece that was too difficult for me. I still have some of the judges rating sheets on my early solos, pointing out my poor control in the lower register, bad phrasing, and puffy cheeks. The ratings got better when I grew older, but I never quite cured the puffy cheeks. My favorite solo in this period was an arrangement UGG boots cheap womens of Rhapsody in Blue, which I loved to try to play and once performed for guests at the old Majestic Hotel. I was nervous as could be, but determined to make a good impression in my new white coat, with red plaid bow tie and cummerbund. |
