SAN ANTONIO -- Faced with the possibility of having a second straight season end with a Game 7 loss, the San Antonio Spurs played with emotion and let TonyParker have some fun. Larry Donnell Jersey . Parker scored 32 points and the San Antonio led by as many as 31 on its way to a 119-96 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, closing out a stressful first-round series Sunday in seven games. The finale featured TimDuncan diving into Dallas bench to save a ball and the Spurs reserves continually on their feet to celebrate baskets. But no one had as much fun or hit the floor more than Parker. The All-Star point guard was 11 for 19 from the field and 10 for 13 on free throws as Dallas was unable to keep him from attacking the lane, despite a series of hard fouls. "I just knew that I had to be aggressive if we wanted to have a chance to win the game because of the strategy that the Mavericks chose," Parker said. "They just dared me to score." ManuGinobili scored 20 points, DannyGreen added 16 points and TimDuncan and KawhiLeonard had 15 points apiece for San Antonio. DirkNowitzki had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Dallas. Last season ended for the Spurs with a Game 7 loss in the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. Facing a much earlier end, San Antonio rode a raucous home crowd and overwhelmed Dallas. San Antonio advances to face the fifth-seeded Portland Trail Blazers, who upset the Houston Rockets in a six-game series. The series opens Tuesday in San Antonio. The Spurs got off to a quick start as they had done at home all series, but the Mavericks were unable to respond as they did in winning Game 2 on the road. Leonards 16-foot jumper gave San Antonio an 18-7 lead 6 minutes into the game and the lead swelled to 29 with 2 minutes remaining in the first half. "We gave ourselves a chance but today we got hit by a tidal wave early," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "They had their best game today and we just werent able to do quite enough to stay in it early. "Its hard when you get hit with an onslaught early the way the guys did." Nowitzki struggled through much of the series, but the Mavericks pushed the Spurs to the brink of elimination behind strong post-season performances from MontaEllis, VinceCarter, DevinHarris and DeJuanBlair. "On the court what confounded us was that theyve got shooters all the way around," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "DirkNowitzki gets a crowd, if you double him you, you leave a lot of other open shooters. So we played him pretty much one-on-one, so we could stay at home a little bit better. That and the ability to shoot it; spread the floor, run the sets that Rick does and the speed of Harris and Ellis was tough for us to handle." Dallas also played a physical series. There were two technical fouls and two flagrant fouls in Game 7 and two more flagrants reversed upon review. Parker was assessed a technical with 31.6 second left in the first quarter after making a layup on and jawing with former teammate Blair as the two ran down the court. The two had been talking to each other all series and Parker was clearly frustrated at times with the hard fouls committed by Blair on his drives earlier in the series. But Parker said it was all in good fun. "I was just laughing with DeJuan," Parker said of the technical. "Thats why it was so funny to get a technical for that, because I was not even cursing at him. DeJuan played four years (for the Spurs). He lived for a year at my house. I love DeJuan." Blair was later assessed a flagrant foul for elbowing Ginobili in the face on a drive. After the foul, Blair stared down Popovich, who was screaming at officials over the severity of the foul. The flagrant foul energized the Spurs, who went on a 14-2 run to take a 51-27 lead with 8 minutes remaining in the first half. "Everybody was active and kind of focused," Duncan said. "We had very little mistakes." San Antonio never led by less than 14 points in the second half. NOTES: The Spurs were 7-0 in games decided by three points or less during the regular season but were 0-2 against Dallas in such games in their first-round series. . Sundays game between Dallas and San Antonio was the 50th post-season game this season. It was also the fifth Game 7 of the first round. "I think its great for basketball and for the fans," Popovich said. "It drives all the coaches crazy. (But) for the game and everybody, its been a wonderful thing. " ... Blair was booed heavily each time he entered the game or committed a foul. Robert Ayers Jersey . The Montreal Canadiens goaltenders dogs Motty ("short for Mozart") and Duke got loose overnight. Rashad Jennings Giants Jersey . The Stars were up 3-1 in the third. Stars and Jets will meet at the MTS Centre Sunday night (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) in what is a must win for the Jets. The Jets and Stars will meet in Dallas later this month, the Stars have two games in hand.LAWRENCE, Kan. -- There were moments of frustration for Kansas coach Bill Self, moments where hed angrily call a timeout or attend a post-game news conference and glumly bemoan another uneven performance. There never was a moment where he lost faith in his team. Now, after enduring the nations most brutal non-conference schedule, the sixth-ranked Jayhawks are proving to be exactly what the pundits thought theyd be: The Big 12s premier team, one that already has a substantial lead in the conference as the race nears its midway point. "We have grown, but were just now to the middle of the season. Thats whats so strange," Self said. "The big thing is that were playing with more energy and were starting to understand how were going to score -- not just running an offence to run an offence. Were not a tough team by any stretch, but are playing tougher than we did earlier in the season." Thats certainly been evident in the results. After a loss to fifth-ranked San Diego State ended the Jayhawks 68-game non-conference winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse, Kansas has ripped off seven straight wins through arguably the toughest part of its league schedule. It began with a win at No. 23 Oklahoma, and continued with wins over four straight teams that were ranked in the Top 25 -- Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Baylor. After a blowout win at TCU, the Jayhawks beat the No. 16 Cyclones for a second time on Wednesday night. Now, theyll head to No. 25 Texas with essentially a two-game lead in the Big 12. You catch the game on TSN2 on Saturday at 12am et/9pm pt. "Im not surprised at all," junior guard Naadir Tharpe said. "I knew it was going to be a matter of time until everybody just let water run off their back and start going out there and just playing. That is what I feel like dudes are doing right now." The most important of them may be Andrew Wiggins, the highly touted freshman. After fits and starts to begin his college career, the 6-foot-8 swingman and projected lottery pick in the Junee draft has gone on a tear. Charles Brown Giants Jersey. Wiggins scored a career-high 27 points in the win over the Horned Frogs, and then bested it with 29 points against the Cyclones earlier this week. Hes averaging more than 24 points over his past three games. "I would say I feel more comfortable on the court," Wiggins said this week. "A lot of things are slowing down for me and my teammates are looking for me." Hes also starting to create his own shot, something that he was reticent to do early in the season, prompting Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg to say hes "oozing with confidence. "Thats scary," Hoiberg said. "With that athleticism, that length and that speed, the kids got it all. When hes knocking down shots, not too many better." There arent many teams better than the Jayhawks right now. Since the start of league play, the nine-time defending champions are putting up a Big 12-leading 84 points per game. Theyre just a half-point out of second place in scoring defence, and their scoring margin of 12 points per game is seven better than second-place Oklahoma State. The Jayhawks (16-4, 7-0 Big 12) also lead the league in field-goal and 3-point percentage, rebounding defence and margin, blocked shots, assists and, well, you get the idea. "They have a special group," TCU coach Trent Johnson said. "At every position, they have somebody who can score. They can attack you, so you really have to be on your toes." After the Jayhawks, Texas may be the next hottest team in the Big 12 heading into Saturdays game. The Longhorns (16-4, 5-2) have rattled off five straight wins, the last three coming against ranked teams in Iowa State, Kansas State and Baylor. The Jayhawks will represent the first time in school history that Texas will have played four consecutive Top 25 opponents. "Theyre young. Theyre not quite as young as we are, but theyre young and fast, probably as fast as any team well play," Self said. "Theyre obviously playing their tails off." ' ' ' |

SAN ANTONIO -- Greg Pateryn scored the winner with less than a minute to play as the Hamilton Bulldogs edged the San Antonio Rampage 4-3 in American Hockey League action Sunday. Patrice Bergeron Authentic Jersey . Mike Blunden had a goal and an assist, and Louis Leblanc and Nick Tanarsky also scored for the Bulldogs (30-33-5), who were outshot 32-26 but used a three-goal third period to secure the victory. Sven Andrighetto and Joel Chouinard chipped in with two assists apiece. John Lee scored a short-handed goal for San Antonio (27-32-9) to tie the game 3-3 at 16:20 of the third period. Joey Crabb and Matt Gilroy had the other Rampage goals. Hamiltons Robert Mayer stopped 28 shots for the victory, while San Antonio goaltender Michael Houser picked up the loss after making 22 saves. The Rampage, who have dropped seven of their last 10 contests, were 1 for 3 on the power play. The Bulldogs failed to score on three chances with the man advantage. Carl Soderberg Jersey . The Olympic hockey rookies will face top-seeded and 2006 Olympic champion Sweden on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Kopitar, who plays for the Los Angeles Kings, is the only NHL player on the Slovenia squad. His father, Matjaz, is the national teams coach. Bobby Orr Bruins Jersey . -- Jermaine Marshall scored eight of his 29 points in the second overtime and Jordan Bachynski blocked T.NEW YORK -- MichaelVick is switching green jerseys -- and maybe trading his clipboard for a starting job. The New York Jets signed the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback to a one-year deal Friday, and released MarkSanchez, the one-time face of the franchise. "I love competition and I love football," Vick said during a conference call Friday night. "And, I feel I have a lot of football left to play." Vick will present a real challenge to Jets starter GenoSmith, who played well down the stretch of his rookie season, but finished with 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. "As of right now," Vick said, "Genos the starting quarterback of this football team." But, Vick also made it clear that he still envisions himself as a starter. "I wouldnt say I would necessarily be OK with sitting on the bench all year," Vick said. "But, I know what I signed up for and I know what I came to New York to do." He said his first order of business is competing with Smith and helping the second-year quarterback along. "At the end of the day," Vick said, "Ill be content with it." Vick said he met Smith last year during the draft process and has stayed in touch since. He also acknowledged that he wont wear his familiar No. 7 with the Jets, saying it was Smiths number to keep. Vick was a free agent after spending the last five seasons with the Eagles. He will be reunited with Jets offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who helped the quarterback have the best season of his career in Philadelphia in 2010. Vick was plagued by injuries the last three years and lost the starting job last year to NickFoles. "I want to personally wish MichaelVick and his family all the best as he heads into the next phase of his career," Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement. "I really enjoyed getting to know him over the last five years. He always represented our team with a tremendous amount of class." Vick thanked the Eagles, their fans and the city of Philadelphia in an open letter posted on The Philadelphia Inquirers website. "I was honoured to be their quarterback and took the privilege to heart every day," he wrote. Vick was considered the top quarterback available in this off-seasons free agent class, although he didnt garner much attention. Vick said he was sold on the Jets because he enjoyed the idea of being reunited with Mornhinweg and playing for Rex Ryan, an opportunity he always hoped for. "Hes a great talent whos won many games, including playoff games, in this league," Mornhinweg said of Vick in comments posted on the teams website. "He has the respect of both his teammates and opponents. Hes here in a role where hes going to compete and push GenoSmith to become the very best that he can be. Michael will be able to go in and play at a high level and a winning level if called upon." Vick, who hhad a solid start in Chip Kellys up-tempo offence, injured a hamstring in Week 5 last season. Reilly Smith Bruins Jersey. He was replaced by Foles, who led the Eagles to the NFC East title and was selected the Pro Bowl MVP. Despite losing the starting gig, Vick was praised by Kelly and team officials for being a leader in the locker room and maintaining an outstanding relationship with Foles and helping him through his second NFL season. "I have a lot left," Vick said. "Its evident with what I was able to do last year." The move by the Jets is reminiscent of the headline-making trade they made in 2008, when they acquired an unretired BrettFavre -- but as their unquestioned starter. The Vick signing also came two years to the day that the Jets made the stunning move to trade for TimTebow. Vick, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who will be 34 in June, was once considered the most dynamic player in the NFL, particularly during his first six NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. His playing career was abruptly halted for two seasons in 2007 when he pleaded guilty to being part of a dog fighting ring. He served 21 months in federal prison, and two more in home confinement. Since his release in 2009, Vick has worked with the Humane Society of the United States to stop organized animal fighting. The move drew mixed reviews by Jets fans on Twitter and message boards, but that didnt concern Vick. "I appreciate all the Jets fans who appreciate me and accept me for who I am and what Ive become, not for what Ive done," Vick said. "Right now, my past is irrelevant." The Sanchez move came as no surprise, but completes a stunning downfall for the quarterback who once drew comparisons to Joe Namath after helping lead the Jets to consecutive AFC title games in 2009 and 2010. Sanchez struggled with consistency after that, and the lasting image of his time with the Jets came in 2012 when he fumbled after running into the backside of guard BrandonMoore. It was returned for a touchdown by New Englands SteveGregory in front of a national television audience on Thanksgiving night and infamously labeled "The Butt Fumble." He spent last season on injured reserve after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder in a preseason game, clearing the way for Smith to start every game. Sanchez had three years remaining on his contract, but his $13.1 million salary cap number for next season -- and $2 million roster bonus due Tuesday -- made it unlikely the team would keep him at that amount. "Id like to thank Mark for everything hes done for this team and me personally," Ryan said in a statement issued by the team. "We were rookies together and had some early success, becoming the first rookie head coach-quarterback to go to back-to-back championship games. We experienced a lot together and I really appreciate Mark. "Hes a great player, a great teammate and I wish him nothing but the best." ' ' ' |

LONDON - When European footballs January transfer window opens for business on Wednesday, the market is expected to have a slow start. Ahmad Bradshaw Womens Elite Jersey . In Europe, top teams seem to be largely happy with their squads after spending nearly $1 billion in the off-season. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. Chasing their first league title in 10 years, the Gunners are reportedly looking for a forward to add to France international Olivier Giroud, who ended a seven-match scoring drought with the winner at Newcastle on Sunday, ensuring that his club starts 2014 at the top. Although Giroud said Arsenal has sufficient attacking options for the remainder of the season with himself, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hinted he could be tempted to sign a couple of new players. After failing to lure Luis Suarez, Wenger wont bid again for the Uruguay striker, who signed a new deal with Liverpool this month. "We are, as many clubs, certainly on alert. If something special turns up, we will not turn it down," Wenger said. "But we are not as well desperate because we have a big depth in our squad." Lagging two points behind Arsenal in the standings, Chelsea could also be looking for extra firepower after Samuel Etoo, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres scored only six goals between them in the league so far this season. With Ba, Juan Mata and Kevin De Bruyne possibly leaving, British media reported that Chelsea and Liverpool have held discussions about the possible arrival of Suarez at Stamford Bridge that could make up for Jose Mourinhos failure to sign Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in the off-season. While a Suarez move to Chelsea looks highly unlikely, Monaco forward Radamel Falcao is a more realistic target for Mourinho, with the Colombian reportedly unhappy in the French league. Xabi Alonso has also been linked with a move to the Blues. After a shaky start to the season, defending champion Manchester United has managed to limit the damages with four consecutive wins and trails Arsenal by eight points going into the new year. David Moyes has not been able to replace Paul Scholes and is in need of a creative midfielder. The Red Devils manager could make a 50 million pound ($82 million) offer for Everton marvel Ross Barkley. Avoiding the drop to the second-tier League Championship is crucial, with topflight teams boosted by increased revenues. And last-place Sunderland will beef up its defence with Marcos Alonso, who will join from Fiorentina until the end of the season. "Marcos is a player that I have known well for a very long time," Sunderland manager Gus Poyet said. "He was desperate to come and play for Sunderland and he is a player I am excited to work with." Staying among the elite is also vital for West Ham. The London club is languishing in 19th place after scoring only 18 goals in 19 matches and signed 18-year-old striker Jaanai Gordon from Peterborough. Everything looks relatively quiet in Spain, too. Barcelona seems more concerned with getting Lionel Messi healthy again for the second half of the season, and will probably be more than content to have its star forward playing at full speed again. The only possible big move would be Barcelona signing a replacement for goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who has said he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. Atletico Madrid is reportedly reinforcing its title challenge by bringing in midfielder Jose Sosa from Metalist. In Germany, Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is expected to confirm in the coming days that he will be leaving for Bayern Munich at the end of the season, while AC Milan has already announced the arrivals of Adil Rami and Keisuke Honda. In France, winger Jeremy Menez is lacking playing time at Paris Saint-Germain and has been linked with a move to Juventus to boost his chances of making the trip to the World Cup in Brazil, and Bastia signed former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse on an 18-month deal. T.Y. Hilton Womens Elite Jersey . And this recent run of success also has general manager Bryan Murray re-thinking his plans for the near future with the March 5 trade deadline not too far away. Womens Blue T.Y. Hilton Elite Jersey . - The NFLs officiating chief has cleared Broncos receiver WesWelker of any wrongdoing for his hit that knocked Patriots cornerback AqibTalib out of Sundays AFC Championship.SOCHI, Russia -- An activist who has been monitoring environmental fallout from the Sochi Olympics has been jailed for five days for resisting police, apparently part of a continuing harassment campaign against local activists. Igor Kharchenko was grabbed on the street in the regional capital of Krasnodar late Tuesday afternoon as he left his house and found his car smashed, an associate, Olga Soldatova, said Wednesday. Police charged him with resisting police orders. Soldatova, who was with him at the police station, said Kharchenko was given a blank sheet of paper instead of a protocol sanctioning his detention. Kharchenko was put on trial behind closed doors Wednesday and sentenced to five days in jail for disobeying police orders. "They were leading Kharchenko out, and he told us he got 5 days, without a proper trial, lawyer or witnesses," said Soldatova, who was at the courthouse. Like Yevgeny Vitishko, who was jailed Monday for swearing in public, Kharchenko is a member of the Environmental Watch on the North Caucasus, a group that has been monitoring the environmental effects of Olympic construction. Activists have been raising concerns for months about an apparent campaign of intimidation and harassment of activists and journalists in the Sochi area. Human Rights Watch said the harassment campaign against the local activists does not deal with the problems that the activists have uncovered but only dampens Russias image abroad. "Vitishkos imprisonment on trumped-up charges, and his colleagues arbitrary detentions and vicious harassment, are more damaging to Russias Olympic host reeputation than any criticism they could have voiced," the groups Russian co-ordinator, Tanya Lokshina, said in a statement Tuesday. Coby Fleener Jersey. Activists and opposition leaders in Moscow also have experienced harassment in recent years but authorities in the capital seem to be employing more sophisticated methods to silence them. Some have faced elaborate criminal investigations; others have been kicked out of their jobs. Tactics in Russian regions, including the Krasnodar region where Sochi is situated, seem to be more primitive and reminiscent of the harassment of Soviet dissidents. Vitishko, who is serving a suspended sentence for spray-painting the fence of what activists say is the illegal property of the local governor, was detained on the doorstep of a prison office on Monday after he applied for permission to travel to Sochi for the Games. In a trial that barely lasted 10 minutes, Vitishko was found guilty of swearing in public, a rarely enforced misdemeanour punishable by a fine of up to 15 days in jail. Other activists in the region have been cited on similar charges. Natalya Kalinovskaya, an activist in the village of Psou, which is adjacent to the Olympic park, had protested the destruction of the sandy beach in her village. She received a court order in February 2013 that barred her from going to the beach, which is public property. Svetlana Kravchenko, an investigative reporter in Sochi for the Caucasian Knot publication, was found guilty in 2012 of beating up a security guard, even though a medical examination documented only a 0.3 millimeter scratch on the guards ear. MattCooke still says he is a changed man. Cheap Patrick Chung Jersey . Less than a day after the NHL handed the Minnesota Wild forward a seven-game suspension for his knee-on-knee collision with Colorado Avalanche defenceman TysonBarrie, Cooke reiterated to the media Thursday that he had no intention of hurting his opponent. "It was not my intent to collide knee-to-knee. Meant to finish my check," he said. The suspension has thrust Cooke back into a negative spotlight. From 2004 to 2011, he was suspended five times for a total of 27 games prior to his most recent conviction. Nonetheless, Cooke is adamant that his questionable decisions are a thing of the past. "Since March 20, 2011, Ive been a changed player," he said. "Stats prove Im a changed player." Cooke has 48 hours to appeal the decision, first to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. If Bettman upholds six games or more, Cooke then has seven days to file an appeal to a neutral arbitrator. He has yet to say whether or not he will appeal the ban. If the suspension is not fully served in this years playoffs, it will continue on next season. The Avalanche have a 2-1 series lead heading into Game 4 on Thursday. Cooke is apologetic for his action and says he is "disappointed" Barrie will miss any time due to injury. However, Avalanche coach PatrickRoy told reporters ealier in the day that the damage has already been done. "(Even if Cooke gets) 10, 15, 20 games, were still playing without Tyson," said Roy. That will give them plenty of time to savour RobynRegehrs first career overtime goal and try to figure out how to score more often. The 33-year-old defenceman connected 2:33 into the extra session, giving the Kings a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night after a 10-game stretch in which Los Angeles was 1-8-1. It was only the eighth goal by the Kings in a span of eight games, including a 5-3 loss to Chicago on Monday. "Its important that we got a win," captain DustinBrown said. "This team has been struggling and were trying to find a way to break through. Going on a two-week break with a taste of a win in our mouths is important, and it feels good. We have a good team here. Its just a matter of fighting our way through it." JonathanQuick outdueled fellow Olympic goaltender SergeiBobrovsky with 24 saves and JakeMuzzin scored the tying goal early in the third period, helping Los Angeles end a four-game losing streak. Bobrovsky, last seasons Vezina Trophy winner, stopped 18 shots and lost for just the third time in 13 starts. JackJohnson scored Columbus goal during a power play early in the first period. Regehr used teammate JeffCarter and Blue Jackets defenceman Denis Savard as a screen before slapping his second goal of the season past Bobrovsky from the top of the left circle. Both of his goals have come against Columbus. "The guys gave me a hard time before the game about scoring that goal on these guys a couple weeks ago in their building, and I just got a good opportunity tonight," said Regehr, who played in his 1,000th regular-season game Saturday. "Mike (Richards) did a great job at locking the puck up the wall in overtime, Jeff was doing a really good job with the screen, and it was just a matter of putting the puck on the net after that." The Kings, 0-for-6 on the power play, got the equalizer with 16:51 left in regulation and the teams skating four-on-four. Muzzin cruised down the slot and converted AnzeKopitars centring pass for his fourth goal after staggered penalties to Columbus NikitaNikitin for hooking and SlavaVoynov for tripping. "Our team played a very strong road game tonight," Johansen said. "Credit to L.A., they really stuck to their game and ffound a way to win. Cheap Vince Wilfork Jersey. Theyre a big-bodied team over there. We had to match the physicality, and I thought our team toughness in here showed out on the ice. Our guys played a hard and heavy game, but Quick made a few big saves on us." Quick, 10-2-0 in his last 12 games against Columbus, is one of six Kings players who will go to the Olympics -- along with equipment manager Darren Granger. "You want all the guys that are going over there to play in the gold medal game, because they deserve it," coach Darryl Sutter said. For the second straight game, the Kings gave up a power-play goal in the first 2 minutes. Johnson got a cross-ice pass from RyanJohansen in the right circle and beat Quick to the glove side with a 35-foot wrist shot while TylerToffoli was off for hooking. It was only the second goal in 53 games and fourth this season for Johnson, who was acquired by Columbus in a trade that sent Carter to Los Angeles in February 2012. The Kings, who were outshot 10-2 in the opening period, got their first power-play opportunity 1:50 before intermission. But the final 38 seconds of the man advantage were negated when they were assessed another bench minor for too many men. Another Kings power play was cut short early in the second period, when Brown was sent off for charging with 14 seconds left on BrandonDubinskys goalie interference penalty. Los Angeles next power play came at 9:21 of the second, after R.J.Umbergers delay-of-game penalty. But Quick had to be sharp to thwart rapid-fire short-handed attempts by Dubinsky and ArtemAnisimov just outside the crease. "We didnt have the start that we wanted to in the game, and weve been on a terrible run here in the last month. So were really happy to get this win," Regehr said. "It was a very important game for us. Now we can enjoy the break, then come back and get to work." NOTES: Former Kings broadcaster Pete Weber is in a St. Paul, Minn., hospital after undergoing a successful heart procedure. Weber currently is the TV play-by-play man for the Nashville Predators. ... All four Blue Jackets players who will be competing at the Sochi Olympics were born in Russia -- Bobrovsky, Tyutin, Anisimov and Nikitin. Slovakian-born RW MarianGaborik, a two-time Olympian, withdrew Thursday due to his slow recovery from a broken collarbone that occurred on Dec. 21 and required surgery. ' ' ' |

The Boston Red Sox are without question the team of the last decade. Sheldon Richardson Jersey For Sale . Theyre won three World Series titles in the last 10 seasons. However the Bosox havent matched the dynastic run of their their most ferocious rivals, the Yankees, who won five Fall Classics between 1996 and 2009 in seven tries over a run of 14 seasons. The most amazing part of that run occurred between 1996 and 2000 when they won four times in five years. The genesis of this run began in 1994, when the Yanks had the best record in the American League going when the season was shut down in August due to a labour dispute that wasnt settled until the following April. In the slightly shortened 05 season, they made the post-season. After going 95-67 under Joe Torre, the Yanks were knocked out by the Angels in the division series. But that was only the beginning. Though their record fell off a bit in 1996 to 90-72, New York was the top team in the American League and ultimately beat Atlanta 4 games to 2 to win their first World Series title since 1978. Four constants in their everyday line-up would emerge in TinoMartinez at first, DerekJeter at short, BernieWilliams in centre field and Paul ONeill in right. The Yankees starting rotation in 96 was largely made up of star pitchers culled from other teams, such as KennyRogers, Jimmy Key, Dwight Gooden and DavidCone. The two homegrowns were AndyPettitte and RamiroMendoza. That would change over the next few years as the Yankees developed some of their own and made some big international signings. In their glory years, the Yanks bench was always populated with veteran stars. In 1996, it was the likes of Tim Raines, Darryl Strawberry and Cecil Fielder. Their depth was extraordinary. Though they stumbled in 1997, the Yankees bounced back with their greatest season of this five-year run going 108-54 and sweeping San Diego in the 1998 World Series. By this time JorgePosada had replaced JoeGirardi as the starter behind the plate, and ChuckKnoblauch had taken over as the second baseman. But Martinez, Jeter, Williams and ONeill were still driving the engine and MarianoRivera had emerged as a star closer with 36 saves this particular season. The bench was populated with the likes of Chili Davis, Raines and Strawberry and the rotation featured three men who pitched over 200 innings in AndyPettitte, DavidWells and DavidCone. They were augmented by HidekiIrabu of Japan and Cuban OrlandoHernandez. In 98, the Yanks had two players who drove in over 100 runs, another with 98 and yet another with 97. This team was loaded in every sense of the word. In 1999, the Yanks win total fell off from 108 to 98. But they were no less of a force. There was only a little bit of tweaking to the every day line-up, with RickyLedee supplanting Chad Curtis in left and Chili Davis taking over the bulk of the DH duties. RogerClemens, who was searching for that first World Series victory, was the new face in the rotation. The Rocket had been picked up in a package deal with the Blue Jays that sent DavidWells, HomerBush and GraemeLloyd to the Jays. Rivera chalked up 45 saves, and the big four of Martinez, Jeter, Williams and ONeill each drove in over 100 runs. The Yankees swept to a second straight World Series victory, taking out Atlanta for the second time in four years. In 2000, the Yankees were bidding to become the first team since the Oakland As from 1972-74 to win three straight World Series. Outside of ShaneSpencer taking over the bulk of the DH duties, the Yankees starting line-up was basically unchanged. The starting pitching was starting to fade a bit though. Three of the starters finished .500 or below. DavidCone was nearing the end of a fantastic career and finished 4-14. Lefty DennyNeagle strugged in the Big Apple, going 7-7 and OrlandoHernandez was only 12-13. Twenty starts had to be made by plug in pieces including nine by swingman Mendoza and five by Dwight Gooden. The Yankees as always had that power-laden bench. David Justice and Glenallen Hill combined for 36 homers and 89 runs batted in, with JoseCanseco nearing the end of his career and adding six homers and 16 RBI. The Yankees still had enough left in the tanks to get back to the World Series for a third straight year, where they defeated their cross-town rivals the Mets 4 games to 1. No team has even won back-to-back World Series since the Yankees scored their trifecta, though the Giants did win in 2010 and 2012. Ive just got a feeling with the ever-increasing local TV deals and the parity in the game, it will be a very long time if ever, before we see another three-peat. Wishful Thinking This is purely speculation and wishful thinking by the New York media, but Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York wondered aloud over the weekend if there was some way the Yankees could acquire JoseReyes from the Blue Jays after the coming season to replace the retiring DerekJeter. The theory being, if the Jays have another rocky season, they just might swing into rebuild mode and be willing to deal Reyes for a package of younger players. Reyes greatly admires Jeter and still makes his off-season home on Long Island, but trading him to the Yankees doesnt make much sense. If Reyes has a great season, you keep him. If he gets hurt again, or simply has a lousy season, his market value would be low and the Yankees wouldnt want or need him anyway. But as I said, stranger things have happened. Tanaka Watch Yankees skipper JoeGirardi has left the door open for Masahiro Tanaka to start either the third our fourth game of the regular season. If it is the third, its against the Houston Astros. However, if it is the fourth game Tanaka would make his Major League debut in the Blue Jays home opener at Rogers Centre. Heres hoping! Sheldon Richardson Elite Jersey .S. -- Kelsey Rocque remains the only unbeaten womens skip at the Canadian junior curling championships. Authentic Jets Jerseys . The deal, filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, calls for the NCAA to toughen return-to-play rules for players who receive head blows and create a $70 million fund to pay for thousands of current and former athletes to undergo testing to determine whether they suffered brain trauma while playing football and other contact sports.NEW ORLEANS -- JohnWall soared over his mascot, and the East stomped on the West in the slam dunk contest. Walls sensational slam finished off a clean sweep for the Washington star, PaulGeorge and TerrenceRoss in the contests new battle format, helping the Eastern Conference earn a 2-2 tie against the West on All-Star Saturday night. Answering Sacramento rookie BenMcLemores dunk in which he leaped over ShaquilleONeal seated in a kings throne, Wall took the ball from Wizards mascot G-Man, who held it above his head, then brought it down between his legs and slammed down a two-handed reverse dunk. "It was only my second time doing it. My first time was on Thursday," Wall said. "So I just felt comfortable with myself and I knew it was a dunk that hasnt been done before." Judges Dominique Wilkins, Magic Johnson and Julius Erving all gave the victory to Wall in his matchup, after picking George over HarrisonBarnes, and defending champion Ross over DamianLillard in the first dunk contest with three All-Stars since 1988. San Antonios MarcoBelinelli won the 3-point contest, and Lillard and Utah rookie TreyBurke won the skills challenge for the Wests two victories. Miamis ChrisBosh, Wilkins and WNBA star Swin Cash won the nights first event for the East, the shooting stars. The league tried to jazz up All-Star Saturday for its return to New Orleans, with a number of tweaks to the format that werent all positively received. Players were given an entire rack of money balls worth 2 points in the 3-point contest, which they could place at any of the five spots on the floor. The skills challenge became a team relay format, but the biggest change was in the dunk contest, which was broken into two parts. The first was the freestyle portion, where the teams had 90 seconds to execute as many dunks as they could, before the three 1-on-1 matchups in the battle format. The East had already clinched that part by winning the first two, but Wall made it a resounding shutout. McLemore came out wearing a kings robe and trailed by ONeal, who unveiled a "Shaq-Lemore" jersey. He made it over ONeals throne on his second attempt, and ONeal presented him with a crown. But moments later, Wall was the real king. "The slam dunk has returned," said Erving, one of the NBAs most ffamed dunkers.Dawan Landry Jersey. Before that, the new format was confusing to fans and the West players themselves, creating a largely silent crowd during their turn. The East had it all figured out, winning the first stage with a passing and dunking display straight out the Harlem Globetrotters, capped by a three-man dunk where Ross threw if off the backboard to Wall, who lobbed it off the overhead shot clock for George to race in and slam it down. That was just a warm-up for the second round, when Ross, the events defending champion from Toronto, started things off by edging Lillard with an assist on his dunk from rapper Drake. Lillard was the first person to compete in three All-Star Saturday events, adding that to Fridays Rising Stars Challenge and Sundays game to give him the most ambitious itinerary ever. He started 2 for 2 by following Fridays victory by winning the skills challenge for the second straight year, he and Burke beating MichaelCarter-Williams and VictorOladipo by a tenth of a second. But Lillards run was stopped when Belinelli made his final three shots to finish with 19 points, edging him by one to advance to the finals from the West. "I was happy to just be invited to all of them and be able to compete in them, and I wanted to win at least one. And I won the first one, and then I thought there would be some momentum to continue to try and win all three of them," Lillard said. "But I fell short in the 3-point contest, and as you all saw in the dunk contest, they kind of just outclassed us." BradleyBeal had 21 points to win the East bracket, then made his final six shots in the finals to tie Belinelli and force a tiebreaker. Belinelli won it by making six straight shots at one point, sweeping his fourth rack. "I was a little bit nervous at the beginning and I think that I shot like two airballs," Belinelli said. "But in the end I was focused. I really cared about this trophy." Bosh, Wilkins and Cash won their second straight shooting stars title, with Bosh making a pair of halfcourt shots. "I keep asking Coach to let me shoot that shot in the game," Bosh said of Miamis Erik Spoelstra. "He wont let me do it yet, but I think that today will give him confidence if he was watching." The conferences split $500,000 in winnings for charity. ' ' ' |

PORT ST. Stevan Jovetic . LUCIE, Fla. -- The New York Mets say an MRI on pitcher JonNieses ailing left shoulder did not show any major problems. JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- A late charge gave Englands Matthew Nixon an 8-under 64 and a one-shot lead after the first round of the South African Open, the start of the 2014 European Tour season. Jared Crick Jersey . Two-time U.S. Open winner RetiefGoosen and former Masters winner CharlSchwartzel also were in early contention at their home tournament. Nixon was one of the last players to finish Thursday, but ended with birdie, eagle, par to knock Italys Marco Crespi and South Africas Jbe Kruger off the top of the leaderboard at Glendower Golf Club. Goosen began with a 66 to tie for third, while Schwartzel shot 67. Schwartzels younger brother, Attie, a pro on South Africas Sunshine Tour, matched his more famous sibling to share sixth place at 5 under. Goosen is still recovering from back surgery in 2012 that wiped out most of his last two seasons and made steady progress on Thursday with seven birdies and just one dropped shot at the par-3 No. 6. "Six under any day is pretty good," the 2001 and 2004 U.S. Open champion said. "It was nice to finish off good, too. Im feeling good. Im going after the ball a little bit now, so getting some consistency going." The 44-year-old Goosen hasnt won a tournament since March 2009. CharlSchwartzel, fresh off a victory in China on the OneAsia Tour last month, had five birdies, while Attie Schwartzel had seven birdies and two bogeys. South African Christiaan Basson set the early pace, adding four birdies and an eagle to a string of pars in a 66. Crespi and Kruger picked up four straight birdies from No. 12 through 15 and moved a shot ahead. Nixon took the lead at the end after opening with four birdies in his first five holes and finishing strongly with an eagle on the par-5 No. 8, his 17th. Former British Open champion DavidDuval had a 74, and Europe Ryder Cup captain PaulMcGinley shot 75. Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork. Rishard Matthews Jersey .com) - Indiana Pacers forward DannyGranger is expected to make his season debut on Friday after missing the teams first 25 games with a left calf strain. Granger appeared in just five games last season before a lingering left knee injury required season-ending surgery. While attempting a comeback in early October, Granger pulled a calf in the same left leg. "Theres no way to simulate game intensity," Indiana head coach Frank Vogel said of Grangers return to the court. "Theres going to be an adjustment period while he gets used to that." Granger, selected 17th overall by the Pacers in 2005, has averaged 18.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 515 games (423 starts) over eight NBA seasons, all in Indiana. The 30-year-old swingman will make his first regular-season appearance since March 3 when the 20-5 Pacers host Houston on Friday. As the Toronto Argonauts prepare to face their hated enemies from down the QEW, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, in this Sundays Eastern Final, theyre faced with something they havent experienced all season - a healthy receiving corps.GordonHayward is staying in Utah after all. The Jazz on Saturday matched Charlottes four-year, $63 million offer for the restricted free agent. Hayward posted to Twitter: "Officially back with the (at)utahjazz!!!! Wanna thank them and all of .jazznation for believing in me! Lots of work ahead..." The Jazz had until late Sunday to match the Hornets maximum offer sheet for the 6-foot-8 small forward. Jazz general manager Gordon Lindsey repeatedly said he wanted to keep Hayward on the roster. "As we have said since the start of last season, we have always seen GordonHayward as a significant part of the future of the Utah Jazz," Lindsey said in a statement. "Gordon is a young, multi-faceted player and a high-character individual who we are pleased will remain a member of the Jazz for many years to come." Hayward averaged career highs of 16.2 points, 5.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals last season while leading the Jazz in scoring and minutes. He was the first Jazz player to average 16 points, five rebounds and five assists since Pete Maravich. He had seven games with double-digit rebounds and six with double-digit assists. He scored more than 20 points in 22 games. The Jazz, who couldnt reach an agreement on an extension with Hayward last fall, extended a qualifying offer on June 26, making him a restricted free agent. Hayward also saw interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers before Charlottes offer came Thursday. Haywardss agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed that Utah had matched on Saturday morning. Cheap Dan Marino Jersey. . The move was first reported by Yahoo! Sports. "I think its certainly a gigantic statement of how the Jazz value Gordon," Bartelstein told The Associated Press. Hornets coach Steve Clifford had praised Haywards "size, skill, competitiveness" and said he could play small forward or shooting guard. "Hes 24 years old and he has the talent, the character and the work ethic to be an All-Star player," Clifford said. The ninth overall pick in the 2010 draft, Hayward has played all four seasons in Utah. He has scored in double figures 63 times with nine double-doubles while averaging 12 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists. The young Jazz struggled last season, going 25-57. In the aftermath, coach Tyrone Corbin was let go after three-plus seasons in Utah and the Jazz hired Atlanta Hawks assistant coach Quin Snyder. Under Snyder, Utah is rebuilding around Hayward, TreyBurke, Derrick Favours and EnesKanter. Last month, the team added promising Australian guard Dante Exum and former Duke forward Rodney Hood in the NBA draft. "I am excited to have the opportunity to coach Gordon," Snyder said. "He is a talented and versatile player, and will play an integral role in our effort to build the Utah Jazz into a championship-calibre team. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop as a leader on our team." ' ' ' |

"Once I was in the gate I was in my zone and comfortable," Thompson said on a conference call. "I just focused on what I needed to do. I think thats the way to do it." The Canadian entered the competition with a slim five-point lead on Smith in the World Cup overall standings. Thompson fell behind her main rival in the final before executing a dramatic pass to move in front to stay. "I knew that everything came down to that last run down the course so it was pretty intense, especially being behind out of the gate and having to make that pass," Thompson said. "It was probably one of the most exciting moments for me in a long while on the skicross course. "It was really great for me to make that pass. Its not very fun skiing behind people. I like skiing in front." Smith settled for silver and Georgia Simmerling of West Vancouver, B.C., won bronze. Calgarys Brady Leman won bronze in the mens race. Jean Frederic Chapuis of France won gold and Austrias Christoph Wahrstoetter took the silver. "I think I made more finals than any other guy this year," Leman said. "They didnt really go my way and I didnt have my best skiing when I made it to the medal rounds and when it really counts. I know Im there and I know Ive been super-competitive every week thhis year which is good because thats something that Ive struggled with in the past. Darrel Young Redskins Jersey. "But you always want more so I know what Ive got to focus on this summer at least anyway." Leman reached the final at the Olympics but just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish. Thompson led a 1-2 Canadian finish in the womens final at Sochi with teammate Kelsey Serwa. "The main goal this year was the Olympics and once I realized that goal I had to refocus and think about the Globe," said Thompson. "In the final (Sunday) I needed to be patient. I waited for the right moment (to pass) and it happened to be near the end. "I nailed the big super-G turn and I was able to move past her." Thompson, from Whistler, B.C., became the first Canadian to win a skicross Crystal Globe in 2012. The 21-year-old won this seasons overall title with 755 points. "Im just really happy that I could realize all my goals and not really disappoint myself," she said. Smith was second with 730 points and Ophelie David of France was third with 572 points. Swedens Victor Oehling Norberg won the mens Crystal Globe with 494 points. Andreas Matt of Austria was second with 482 points and Germanys Daniel Bohnacker was third with 399 points. Dave Duncan of London, Ont., was leading the World Cup rankings when he was injured during the qualification round at the last World Cup stop in Are, Sweden. He missed his last three races and settled for sixth overall. Switzerland won the Nations Cup for the second straight year with 2,261 points. Canada was second with 2,154 points. ' ' ' |

DENVER -- AramisRamirez had three hits, including a solo homer, and WilyPeralta won his fourth straight start as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the error-prone Colorado Rockies 9-4 on Saturday. Thomas Keiser . CarlosGomez extended his hitting streak to 17 games to help the Brewers improve to 5-1 on their seven-game trip. Peralta (8-5) went 7 2-3 solid innings and allowed four runs, three earned. He gave up a two-run single to JustinMorneau in the first and then shut down the leagues best offence until CoreyDickersons two-run homer in the sixth. ChristianFriedrich (0-1) lasted six innings and surrendered nine runs, four earned, in his season debut. He was betrayed by his defence as the Rockies committed a season-high four errors. Friedrich is the 11th starting pitcher the Rockies have used this season. The 26-year-old lefty, who missed most of last season due to back inflammation, was 1-8 with a 7.89 ERA for Triple-A Colorado Springs before being recalled. The Brewers have scored 22 runs in the first two games of the series. Milwaukee scored four in the second inning on Saturday and four more in the third, which was more than enough for Peralta. The righty only got stronger as the game went along, still touching 97 mph before being pulled with two on and two out in the eighth. RobWooten struck out Mike McKenry to end the threat. Ramirez had his second straight three-hit day. His solo homer in the fifth was his ninth of the season. MarkReynolds and Gomez also added two hits. Gomez has reached base safely in 34 straight games, the fifth longest streak in franchise history. Colorados faulty fielding in the second opened the door for a big inning. Third baseman JoshRutledge had two errors in the frame, and second baseman DJ LeMahieu had another trying to turn a double play. Leading 5-2 in the third, the Brewers broke the game open on a strange play with the bases loaded as Friedrichs wild pitch paved the way for all the runners to score. Friedrich sent a pitch past McKenry, who quickly tracked the ball down on the right side of the plate and tossed to Friedrich covering home. The ball sailed over Friedrichs head, allowing Ramirez to score from third and Reynolds from second as the ball rolled toward the Brewers dugout. JeanSegura was on first when the play started, but when Friedrich walked toward the field after picking up the ball -- and a shaken-up McKenry bent over -- Segura hustled home. NOTES: The game started 23 minutes late because of weather. ... RHP KyleLohse (8-2) takes the mound for the Brewers in the series finale. LHP TylerMatzek (1-1) goes for Colorado. ... The Rockies selected the contract of reliever WiltonLopez. The team optioned utility player Kyle Parker and reliever Chris Martin to Colorado Springs. ... The Rockies transferred outfielder MichaelCuddyer (fractured left shoulder) to the 60-day disabled list. ... Colorado OF CarlosGonzalez (left index finger) said he hopes to have his stitches taken out next week. Kevin Minter Kids Jersey . -- A year ago, Flavia Pennetta was close to retiring from tennis. Ted Larsen Kids Jersey . Maria Silvia Bastos Marques, president of the EOM (Municipal Olympic Company), will be leaving her post but will remain as an advisor, a city hall statement said Tuesday.LAS VEGAS, Nev. - WebbSimpson was far from comfortable with a four-stroke lead at TPC Summerlin. "This is a golf course where guys can shoot, as weve seen this week, 8, 9, 10, 11 under," Simpson said. "So, I have to go out with a mindset of attacking and trying to make birdies." Simpson maintained his four-shot advantage Saturday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, birdieing four of the last seven holes for a 4-under 67. "I think the key tomorrow is to, No. 1, stay patient again in case I do get off to another slow start," said Simpson, who missed a playoff that JonathanByrd won with a hole-in-one on the fourth extra hole by a stroke in 2010 after making a double bogey on the par-3 17th. Making his first start since helping the U.S. win the Presidents Cup, the 2012 U.S. Open champion was 19 under overall. He opened with rounds of 64 and 63. "The conditions were perfect," Simpson said. "I knew guys were shooting low numbers. I felt like I was playing good enough. I just was shooting pretty bad parred 9, dropped the shot at 11. So, it was frustrating. But my caddie just told me to stay patient and let the birdies come. And thats what happened. I made some putts coming in." Chesson Hadley was second after a 67, birdieing the short par-4 15th and following with a hole-out for an eagle on the par-5 16th. "They waved us up on 15 and I just roasted a driver up there," Hadley said. "I think it hit perfectly into the hill and dribbled up there to about 10 feet. I hit a good putt. It was just a little to the left, so it was a nice tap-in birdie. So that was good. "Then I drove it right on 16, and I laid up to the perfect number. And my first thought when I hit it was, Please go a little. Then I saw it take the first bounce and it looked like it just one hopped right in the bottom of the stick. That was huge." The Web.com Tour Championship winner last month, Hadley is making his fourth careeer PGA Tour start. Calais Campbell Kids Jersey. He and Simpson are both from Raleigh, N.C. "Webb and I grew up playing together," Hadley said. "Hes always been more successful earlier than I have been. And you know, hes been such a good role model and just influence for the game as far as his faith is concerned. Im just looking forward to playing with him tomorrow." JeffOverton was third at 14 under after a 68. JasonBohn had a 69 to reach 13 under, and SeanOHair shot a 63 to join first-round leader J.J.Henry, defending champion RyanMoore, WilliamMcGirt, RyoIshikawa and RussellKnox at 12 under. OHair eagled the 15th. "Ive been playing some nice golf, and it was nice to come out today and get started off quick," OHair said. "I was 3 under pretty quickly and turned at 4, and kind of started off slow on the back nine, but that eagle helped on 15. So, it was just all in all a great day." OHair had to play the four-event Web.com Tour Finals to regain his PGA Tour card. "I think it was a tough time this year for me, especially late because I was realizing I was going to lose my card," OHair said. "I just had to get my mind right going into those Web.com events. I knew I had an opportunity to get my card back, but I had to be in a right spot mentality. It was a disappointing time for me. "I was able to get my mind right, and I played fairly well. ... I really feel good about my game right now, everything about it, from putting, ball-striking. I really feel like I can play some great golf right now. I think it helped me to kind of go back to basics and simplify my game." Henry has shot 71-70 after opening with a course-record 60. McGirt shot 64, Ishikawa had a 68, and Moore and Knox shot 69. DanielSummerhays had a 68 to reach 11 under. He eagled the par-5 13th and 16th holes. JimmyWalker, the winner of the season-opening Frys.com Open last week in California, was 10 under after a 64. LAKE PLACID, N. Michael Brockers Jersey .Y. -- Brendan Gaunce scored the winning goal and added an assist as Canada beat Finland 5-3 on Wednesday in a world junior exhibition hockey match. Hunter Shinkaruk and Felix Girard also had a goal and an assist for Canada, while Eric Comrie made 37 saves. Sam Reinhart and Frederik Gauthier had the other Canadian goals. Kasperi Kapanen, Saku Salminen and Artturi Lehkonen countered for Finland, while Juuse Saros stopped 31 shots. Canadas next exhibition game at its summer development camp is Thursday against Sweden. Joe Barksdale Rams Jersey . -- The Buffalo Sabres got the lead for a change, and held onto it thanks to a stellar performance in goal by JhonasEnroth. Austin Pettis Rams Jersey . Maxime Presseaults goal at 13:59 of the second period broke a 2-2 deadlock for the Foreurs, who trailed the series 3-2 before winning back-to-back games, and Guillaume Gelinas and Pierre-Maxime Poudrier also scored.HOUSTON - Their hopes of playoff contention a distant memory, the Blue Jays show up to the park each day with a game to play and to win knowing the result is irrelevant to the standings. "Its awful, its no fun, its frustrating, I mean I could probably keep going," closer CaseyJanssen told TSN.ca prior to Saturdays game. Janssen kept going. "I never would have thought we would be in this situation," he said. "Were not playing good baseball." Following Saturdays second straight embarrassing loss to the pathetic Astros, the Blue Jays are mired in a seven-game losing skid. The latest calamity, by an 8-5 score, was a clumsy effort which saw the Jays down 7-0 by the fourth inning thanks to lousy starting pitching and shoddy defence. In other words, a familiar script. Still, guys have to find a reason, or reasons, to continue to grind to the end of a lost season. "Springboard for next season," veteran MarkDeRosa told TSN.ca in a conversation in New York last week. "A chance for guys to finish strong. A chance for young guys to earn some playing time and see if they can maybe make the 2014 roster or maybe open up some eyes to the point where theyre given serious consideration. A guy like RajaiDavis getting a chance to play every day. Hes going to be a free agent at the end of the year, those at bats matter to him." "Pride, you know youre getting paid to play and do a job," said Janssen. "There are always people watching you. If its the fans, your family, theres still a lot to play for as far as that and to finish with as good a year as you can have. Maybe more from a mental standpoint of keeping mentally strong about not giving in." Sounds like the right approach. Does Janssen believe everyones buying in? "I dont know," said Janssen. "That would have to be a question for each individual person if they were to look in the mirror and say, hey, I did everything I possibly could this season and it worked out or it didnt work out. Then they would have to maybe evaluate either their preparation in their in-season or off-season program to make it better." "You can never take anything for granted at this level," said manager John Gibbons. "You can have a great career in this business and youre a young man when youre finished anyway. One thing about the great players, I mean day in, day out, it doesnt matter the circumstances, how the teams doing or how theyre doing at the time; they compete. You know they dont give any at bats away if youre a hitter. Pitchers, regardless of how the game is going, you know they dont give in to it." Recent call-ups AnthonyGose, KevinPillar, RyanGoins and MoisesSierra are dotting the field and with more to come when rosters expand on September 1, the Blue Jays front office is getting a glimpse of the future. Perform well and there could be a 2014 roster spot available. Opinions are varied, somewhat, about whether the 2013 Blue Jays, given the benefit of a new start, could perrform better. Greg Zuerlein Rams Jersey. "I would think that there would need to be some changes," said Janssen. "I would also say that the snowball is so big that right now its tough to say because a fresh start would do a little bit of good. There are definitely some holes that got exposed. I would say, just from my evaluation, if we came back with the same team, although I think it would be different, it might not be a championship team." "I do but certainly some things have to be addressed," said DeRosa. "I come from an old school way of baseball where things were done a little bit differently. Its become a super young mans game. When I broke in 30 was considered youre in your prime. Thirty-two, 34, these guys were playing and I know people are going to say a lot had to do with what guys were doing off the field and I understand that but there are so many young guys in the game now and productive young guys that you either adapt or die and go home. I would like to see a little bit more reversal back to an old school mentality. How you do that I dont know but I think if Im back next year, if Im fortunate enough to be back in this uniform next year, Id definitely feel with a year under my belt, Ive never lacked for speaking my mind but I definitely think Id speak it a little bit more." The record is awful at 57-73 and it appears there will be more losses than wins the rest of the way, making for a long final five weeks. "Weve had our team meetings," said Janssen. "Weve been loose, weve been tight, weve been anywhere in between from there and for the most part it seems to still come out with the same type of outcome." JANSSEN DISCUSSES HIS HEALTH CaseyJanssen hasnt had a save opportunity since August 15 when he converted his 22nd of the season (in 24 chances) against the Red Sox. In fact his mop up appearance on Friday, the eighth inning of a 12-4 loss to the Astros, was his first game action since. As well as Janssens pitched all season, its been a battle through near-constant shoulder pain following a surgery last offseason. "Cant wait for the offseason to really heal this thing and get it right," said Janssen. "Not that Im looking ahead but Im excited for next year and hopefully the little everyday aches and pains subside completely and I can just go about my whole program the way that I would normally do it 100-percent healthy." Is Janssen a better pitcher today because of the injury? "I feel like Ive learned a lot from not necessarily going out there with my best stuff every night and how important it is to pitch, changing speeds and hitting spots, and still being able to accomplish my task pretty much." IZTURIS SEASON OVER To accommodate Chien-MingWangs addition to the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays transferred MaicerIzturis to the 60-day disabled list, ending his season. Izturis sprained his left ankle in the fifth inning of Tuesday nights game against the Yankees. He remains with the ballclub and is wearing a walking boot on his left foot. ' ' ' |

MARANA, Ariz. Portland Trail Blazers Black Friday Jersey . -- RoryMcIlroy was walking down the stairs toward the driving range when he passed LeeWestwood and gave him the same message he had delivered earlier Saturday in the Match Play Championship. "See you in the morning," McIlroy said with a big smile. "Just like I told you." In 14 years of this fickle tournament, there has never been a semifinal match so compelling. McIlroy had another surge on the back nine to put away Bae Sang-moon, 3 and 2. Moments later, Westwood finished off MartinLaird by the same margin, setting up a Sunday showdown with more at stake than just a spot in the championship match. If either McIlroy or Westwood goes on to win the Match Play Championship, they would go to No. 1 in the world. "I think with both of us being up there in the world, and both of us with the possibility of going to No. 1, it gives the match definitely an extra little bit of spice," McIlroy said. The duel was not lacking spice in the first place. They were stablemates at International Sports Management until some testy exchanges last year. Shortly after McIlroy shot 80 in the final round of the Masters to blow a four-shot lead, Westwood got under his skin by saying the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland "has a pull hook in his bag under pressure." But it was McIlroy who was the first to win a major, setting records at Congressional on his way to an eight-shot win in the U.S. Open. Later in the year, when McIlroy left Chubby Chandler at ISM, Westwood tweeted that it was a bizarre move. McIlroy quickly un-followed Westwood and Chandler on Twitter. Both players say their relationship is no different than with other golfers. They dont spend as much time together, understandable because they no longer have the same manager. "Theres nothing strained about the relationship between the two of us. Its still the same as it was," Westwood said. "Rory said to me before I went out, See you tomorrow morning. And then today again there, he said, See, told you. Thats the trouble with kids nowadays. They think theyre always right, dont they?" A dull day in the desert ended with high anticipation for the final day. The championship match is at high noon. The McIlroy-Westwood duel gets under way as the sun begins to climb over the high desert. "I think its the match that most people wanted, and definitely the match that I wanted," McIlroy said. The other semifinal match Sunday morning features HunterMahan and MarkWilson, assuring an American will make it to the final for the first time since TigerWoods won in 2008. Mahan played the shortest quarterfinal match in the 14-year history of the event by beating MattKuchar, 6 and 5. Wilson, gaining more respect the deeper he goes in the bracket, had an easy time in his 4-and-3 win over Peter Hanson of Sweden. The 18-hole championship match will start about an hour after the semifinals. With a strong breeze, firmer conditions, tough hole locations and only four quarterfinal matches, Saturday at Dove Mountain was lacking excitement. For the first time ever, none of the quarterfinals matches reached the 17th hole. McIlroy and Westwood saved the day. For starters, its the first time the Match Play Championship semifinals have featured two of the top four seeds since 2004, when Woods and DavisLoveIII advanced. McIlroy is No. 2, and Westwood is No. 3. Plus, theres that small matter of No. 1 in the world. Westwood already has been No. 1 in the world, and said his priority is picking up his first WGC title. McIlroy already is a major champion, and would become the second-youngest player behind Woods to reach No. 1 in the world. "My priorities were to win major championships and win World Golf Championships because I havent ever won any," Westwood said. "Ive been at No. 1 couple of times. It would be a different way of thinking to me compared to Rory, who hasnt been No. 1. He may be thinking about it, but my main goal is to play well -- or play as well as Ive been playing -- tomorrow morning and try and win that match." Getting to this stage has been relatively easy. McIlroy had to go to the 18th hole in the opening round, but has had little resistance since then. He took the lead for good over Bae with a birdie on the 11th hole, then stretched his advantage when Bae chopped up the 13th hole and missed the par-4 15th green on the wrong side and had to settle for par. Westwood had a tougher time Saturday, but not for long. He had led in 48 of the 49 holes he played through the opening three rounds, and fell behind immediately to Laird. But starting with Lairds bogey on the sixth, Westwood won four of the next five holes. He holed a 6-foot birdie putt to halve the 13th hole and stay 2 up, then seized command when Laird took three shots to get out of the bunker on the 14th before conceding. An All-American semifinal is not nearly as surprising as the players in the match. "I dont think too many people picked me to win," Wilson said. He has a chance to win for the fourth time in 14 months, more than anyone on the PGA Tour in that time, but gets overlooked due to his medium-length off the tee. Wilson makes up for that with smart play and great putting, a deadly combination in this format. Even on the par 5s he couldnt reach at Dove Mountain, he played to the right angles and kept pressure on Hanson. Mahan escaped the opening round in 19 holes over ZachJohnson before bulling his way through the bracket with birdies. He only needed pars against Kuchar, whose belly putter went cold on him. Mahan, who won a WGC title at Firestone two years ago, won five holes with pars against Kuchar. He holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the ninth to go 5-up at the turn, then won the next hole when Kuchar again missed from 6 feet for par. "Matt couldnt find the putter today, which is rare for him, because hes a great putter," Mahan said. "I got lucky in that aspect. But I played solid, didnt make any bogeys and didnt give many holes -- and kept the pressure on him. That was nice to do." Indiana Pacers Black Friday Jersey . NHL hockey is returning to the Manitoba capital. The True North Sports and Entertainment group announced on Tuesday that they have completed a deal to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers and move them to Winnipeg in time for the 2011-12 season. San Antonio Spurs Black Friday Jersey . Sabathia did not get a decision on Monday against Tampa Bay, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. Hes 13-4 on the year to go along with a 3.42 ERA. Since winning six decisions over a nine-start stretch, Sabathia is 0-1 over his last two outings, but still has only allowed more than three runs once in his previous 10 trips to the hill.MADRID, Spain -- Serena Williams beat Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-1 to reach the Madrid Opens second round, however older sister Venus lost 6-4, 6-1 to Angelique Kerber on Monday. The ninth-seeded Williams fired 13 aces and 40 winners against Vesnina, who was struggling with her game on the slippery blue clay court. The Russian lost her balance in the sixth game and set up a break point for Williams, who pulled ahead to lead 4-2. Williams ninth ace of the match provided a set point for the ninth-ranked American to take the first set and wrap up the match against the 68th-ranked Russian in just over an hour. "Im feeling good but I wasnt thrilled," said Williams, who will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia. "This is my first tournament in Europe so hopefully I will just keep my good form and just keep going," she added. Venus third tournament since being sidelined by illness is over after being broken six times by the 12th-seeded German. The seven-time major champion reached the quarterfinals at Miami and Charleston, North Carolina, earlier this season. Fifth-seeded Samantha Stosur rallied to beat Christina McHale 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to reach the third round, as did French Open champion Li Na after winning 6-3, 6-1 against Silvia Soler-Espinosa. Petra Cetkovska also advanced, beating Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4, 7-5. Defending champion Petra Kvitova beat Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-3 in her first round matchh. Denver Nuggets Black Friday Jersey. Kvitova needed over an hour to beat Erakovic, with the Czech player saving all three break points against her while converting four herself. Also on Monday, Andrea Hlavackova, Ekaterina Makarova, Lucie Hradecka, Lucie Safarova and Sara Errani won their first round matches at Madrid Open. Local favourite Carla Suarez Navarro rallied to beat 15th-seeded Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to reach the second round. In the mens tournament, Spains Nicolas Almagro rallied to beat Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3. Almagro saved four set points before hitting long to lose the first set in a tiebreaker. The thirteen-ranked Spanish player broke his opponent in the opening game of the second after adjusting his game to the new court surface to win the match in three sets. "The court isnt very good, its very slippery," Almagro said of the unorthodox blue clay court that has been criticized by players after it was introduced for the first time in this years tournament. Other winners Monday included Serbias Victor Troicki, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia and American Ryan Harrison who beat Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain ousted 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic begins his title defence Tuesday against Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who beat Victor Hanescu 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3. ' ' ' |

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. David Alaba Shirt . -- The Minnesota Vikings have reinstated cornerback ChrisCook to the active roster, ending his without-pay suspension after two weeks. But Cook wont be playing, practicing or even at the teams facility while he deals with a felony charge of domestic assault. "We really think its best for him to focus on the legal matters and not be a part of what were doing right now," coach Leslie Frazier said Monday after the decision was announced. The Vikings agreed on the course of action with Cook and his agent, Hadley Engelhard, so the 24-year-old Cook can focus on his off-the-field situation. "We want him to put his energy and efforts into that case," Frazier said, sounding as if Cook has already played his last snap of the 2011 season. "Its hard to say that were going to see him again considering what hes facing, but well see what happens." Cook has a Nov. 22 court hearing regarding the allegation he strangled his girlfriend after becoming angry that she spoke with a former boyfriend. Frazier, however, stopped short of ruling Cook out of the teams future plans. "Its so tough to say today as we stand here in November, considering the situation and not knowing how its going to play out," the coach said. "Its hard to look into the future." For the present, the Vikings will play one short on their 53-man roster -- without their best cover man. Veteran cornerback AntoineWinfield is the stalwart of the secondary, but he plays primarily against inside receivers and his strength is stopping the run. Cook could face discipline from the NFL under the leagues personal conduct policy. Spokesman Greg Aiello said Cooks situation remains "under review." Engelhard hasnt returned messages seeking comment since his clients arrest more than two weeks ago. The Vikings could have kept Cook on the reserve/suspended list for two more weeks, but Frazier indicated he didnt want the team to deal with that distraction. He said hes simply hoping for the best for Cook, the Vikings second-round draft pick out of Virginia last year. "Hopefully the allegations arent true. Hopefully he gets things turned around," Frazier said. Bastian Schweinsteiger Jersey . Maria Silvia Bastos Marques, president of the EOM (Municipal Olympic Company), will be leaving her post but will remain as an advisor, a city hall statement said Tuesday. "It is my feeling the club is at a stage that is critical to our on-field expectations and this move was necessary," Hervey told a news gathering hours after he informed Reed he was gone after three years as head coach. ATLANTA -- Give ClaytonKershaw a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning, and theres not much chance hell mess things up. The Los Angeles Dodgers are off to quite a start in the NL division series. Kershaw struck out 12 during seven dominant innings, AdrianGonzalez hit a two-run homer and the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 6-1 in Game 1 on Thursday night. The big-money Dodgers havent won a World Series championship since 1988 -- by far their longest dry spell since the franchise moved from Brooklyn to Southern California in 1958. In an interesting twist, Kershaw was born the same year as that most recent title. If the ace left-hander keeps pitching the way he did in his first post-season win, the Dodgers might have a chance to go all the way again. "This one definitely has special meaning to me," Kershaw said. For the bumbling Braves, it was another dose of October misery. "When you have an opposing pitcher on the mound who is as good as Kershaw, theres not a lot of room for error," said Atlanta starter KrisMedlen, knocked out in the fifth. "I had a lot of error tonight." Game 2 in the best-of-five series is Friday night in Atlanta, with ZackGreinke (15-4) starting for the Dodgers against MikeMinor (13-9). Kershaw, who had a 1.83 ERA during the regular season, limited the Braves to ChrisJohnsons run-scoring single with two outs in the fourth. That just seemed to make the pitcher mad -- he struck out AndreltonSimmons to end Atlantas only serious threat, and the next five Braves hitters for good measure. Appropriately, Kershaw finished up by striking out the side in the seventh, matching his season high for Ks. He allowed just three hits. "Hes the best pitcher in baseball," Gonzalez said, "and he showed it tonight." Atlanta struck out 15 times in all. Even though slugger MattKemp is out for the playoffs and AndreEthier is hobbling with an injured ankle, the Dodgers had no trouble piling up runs against Medlen, who came into the playoffs riding a five-game winning streak. He gave up nine hits and five runs in four-plus innings, finally getting the hook when he plunked YasielPuig with a pitch right between the shoulder blades. Of course, Medlen wouldve fared better if hed gotten any help from the guys behind him. The Braves played some truly atrocious defence, though they were not charged with an error. In the second, rookie left fielder EvanGattis flopped to the ground in an attempt to catch a sinking liner, only to look very much like the converted catcher he is. The ball hit by A.J.Ellis rolled all the way to the wall for an RBI double, putting the Dodgers ahead 2-0 on a play that an outfielder with even a modest amount of experience probably wouldve grabbed fairly easily. "I thought there was a couple plays that we could have made," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I think that the guys were just a little amped up." AdrianGonzalez began to put it out of reach in the third, driving a pitch over the centre-field wall for his first post-season homer, a two-run shot that made it 4-0 as a sense of doom fell over a Turner Field crowd that had been soo raucous in the first when Medlen struck out the side. David Alaba Jersey. Not that Atlanta fans havent seen this all before. The Braves are perhaps best known for winning only one World Series ring during a historic run of 14 straight division titles. Now, theyre already in the hole as they try to snap a streak of losing seven straight post-season series since 2001. At least theyre not done yet. After losing to St. Louis in a one-and-done wild-card game last season, which was marred by a disputed infield-fly call, the Braves have a chance to bounce back this time. In addition to Gattis stumbling attempt at a catch, second baseman ElliotJohnson bobbled CarlCrawfords grounder leading off the third, a play that was generously ruled a hit by the official scorer. Medlen retired the next two hitters, but Gonzalez drove the next pitch over the wall, with JasonHeyward making a futile leap that left him hanging from the top. Heyward, who was moved from right field to centre as part of an outfield reshuffling, had his own problems. Twice, he overthrew the cutoff man on throws to the plate, allowing runners to advance. Just to add to Atlantas outfield woes, JustinUpton wasnt even close on a sliding attempt when Ellis doubled down the right-field line in the fourth. He wound up scoring on MarkEllis two-out single, stretching the lead to 5-0. Kershaw struggled with command of his fastball, but worked more off his breaking pitches and made it look easy against the free-swinging Braves. "Strikeouts just kind of happen," he said. "Its not something Im trying to do. Im just trying to get outs as fast as possible." Gattis, one of Atlantas most pleasant surprises during the regular season, had a miserable night in his post-season debut. He ended the second by somehow getting doubled off first on a lazy fly to short right field. DanUggla watched it all from the dugout. The three-time All-Star was left off the Braves playoff roster after a dismal season in which he batted just .179 with a franchise-record 171 strikeouts. Uggla wasnt the only big-money flop for the Braves, who had to juggle their outfield because of B.J.Uptons season-long slump. After signing a five-year, $75.25 million deal during the off-season, he batted just .184 and was finally benched late in the year. Merely a backup in the playoffs, he took a called third strike as a pinch-hitter in the fifth and walked slowly toward the dugout to a chorus of boos. "It just got away from us," Braves catcher BrianMcCann said. NOTES: The Dodgers put Ethier on their 25-man roster even though he can likely only be used as a pinch-hitter because of an ankle injury. He came up in that role in the eighth, batting for Kershaw and grounding out to first base. ... After Medlen struck out the first three hitters of the game, Los Angeles didnt have another 1-2-3 inning until the seventh against Braves rookie AlexWood. ... SkipSchumaker started in centre field for the Dodgers and drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the second. ... BrianWilson and KenleyJansen finished up with one scoreless inning apiece. Jansen struck out the side in the ninth. ' ' ' |
