Now, whether or not there would be enough ball to go around for both James and Melo is something to be addressed for another day, but the signing of Melo would go a long way to signal the Heats continued ambition and desire to retain LeBrons services. If one calls the Heat the front-runner for James, then who else is potentially in the conversation? Daryl Morey and the Rockets are focused on their first title in 20 years - luxury tax be damned. If Bosh doesnt want to form a new Big Three in the Lone Star State, then perhaps LeBron can do it himself. They won 48 games last year and still managed to miss the playoffs, but the Phoenix Suns are one of the finest young teams in the NBA right now and the addition of James to a line-up that includes the dynamic Eric�Bledsoe and, arguably, the most underrated guard in the NBA in Goran�Dragic could turn the Suns from a team with boundless potential to one capable of competing overnight. Oh, and theres the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the level of sheer acrimony that existed when LeBron left for Miami in 2010, the idea that James could someday return to the team he took to the 2007 NBA Finals seemed preposterous. But here we are. The disdain for LeBron from Cavaliers fans and even team owner Dan Gilbert was palpable and bridges didnt just seem burned, but nuked and the earth was salted. James is an Ohio kid. In leaving the Cavs, his intent was to win a championship. Obviously, alienating himself from Cavs fans who once idolized him was a by-product of this and some of their vitriol is understandable. Sure, LeBron�James was a free agent and only exercising his rights as a free agent to sign with the Heat, but its hard as a fan to not take your best player deciding that there better options out there as a bit of a slap in the face. They say that time heals all wounds and that seems to be the case here to some extent, but theres more to it than just that. So whats changed? Well, James left four years ago because he didnt have what he deemed to be a suitable supporting cast. In the 2010 playoffs, outside of James, Daniel�Gibson was the only Cavaliers player 25 or under. The likes of Jamario�Moon, 33-year-old Antawn�Jamison and a 37-year-old Shaq didnt exactly instill confidence in LeBron that this team was equipped to compete in the long run. Flash forward four years and the long run is exactly what the 2014 edition of the Cavaliers are all about. Thanks to five lottery picks in the last four years, including three first-overall selections (Kyrie�Irving and Canadians Anthony�Bennett and Andrew Wiggins), Cleveland is stockpiled with young talent. The environment that James wanted in Cleveland four years ago exists now. But what about the anger? Fans, perhaps reticent at first, will likely come around to a return engagement, but the enmity wasnt a one-way street. While fans were furious with the player leaving, James, himself, felt that the Cavs played into the fomenting anger of the fans and all too easily allowed him to be cast as the villain in his exit. There was also the now notorious open letter to the fans (bizarrely written in comic sans) from Gilbert posted on the teams website that, in no uncertain terms, casted aspersions upon James as both a player and a person. Thats not something that somebody quickly forgives and forgets. Gilbert certainly didnt forget, which is why, after four years, the letter was finally removed from the teams site. While the summer of 2014 wont bring with it the forced and ill-advised pageantry of the Decision, the fallout of LeBrons choice four years later may dwarf that of his first one. It took two hours of therapy each day with a chiropractor to correct the problem. When the season ended, Wagner decided she needed to make a radical change if she was ever going to achieve the goals she wanted. She left her family and friends on the East Coast and moved to Southern California to train with Nicks, best known as Sasha Cohens coach. "I was really nervous going out there because I felt like it was getting to the point where I wanted it so bad," Wagner said. "Then I remembered that Ive made all these changes for a reason. Ive learned so much in my time in California and I needed to use that new training. Mr. Nicks has done a great job of helping me refocus." Third after the short program, Wagner needed a spectacular performance and some help from others. She did her part, a refreshing departure after a night of lacklustre, one-dimensional performances. Kerry:Whats your view on officials calling a penalty on Bryce Salvadore after watching the replay on the arena screen? It appeared there was a high stick, but it wasnt called. Fans were loud, refs watched video, then made the call. Devils coach Peter DeBoer went nuts.Steve @08008steve Steve:Thank you for providing this question. It is somewhat unusual, but certainly not impossible for a penalty to be changed following a conference held amongst the on-ice officials. Based on the reaction of Peter DeBoer, his players on the bench and commentary on both broadcast feeds, a perception in varying degrees existed that the call was changed only after the officials viewed the replay on the scoreboard in the Wells Fargo Center. We will never know for certain if the smoking gun was handed to the officials courtesy of the replay. I have a different take on the situation following the immediate support that was provided to young referee Mark Lemelin by his colleagues in a conference once it became apparent the wrong player (Steve�Downie of the Flyers) was being sent to the penalty box. I believe this was going to take place irrespective of anyone who might have snuck a peak at the Jumbotron on the way to this meeting of the minds! In fairness to the young referee, his assignments are split between the AHL and NHL. Things happen much more quickly in the NHL and it can be baptism under fire once any player or official moves up to this ultimate level of the game. There is something to be learned from every game worked and experience is a great teacher. On this play the young referee correctly raised his arm for a delayed high-sticking penalty when Matt�Read of the Flyers clipped Bryce Salvadore on the side of the head while delivering a body check on the Devils player against the boards in front of the penalty box. Following the impact of the check, Salvadores stick came up and caught Downie in the face as the Flyer approached from the frontal position. In effect there were two high sticking infractions that occurred almost simultaneously on the same play. Lemelin however was looking through the back of Downie from a considerable distance in the end zone and did not see Salvadores stick strike the Flyer forward. Not yet all that familiar with NHL team personnel, he mistook Downie for Read in the quickness of the play and the close proximity of the three players. Once play was stopped, the ref approached Salvadore to see if any injury resulted from the "Matt�Read" high stick. Mistakenly, the ref then imposed the penalty to Steve�Downie who was also rubbing his face and checking to see if he had all his teeth following the high stick he received from Salvadore. From the players bench side it would have been obvious to the other officials (and the teams) that it was Downie that was struck by the stick of Salvadore. Once it was announced that Downie was assessed the penalty, a quick conference was convened by the other members of the crew to straighten out the confusion. What was lost in the correction process was the initial high-stick that the young ref correctly signaled when Salvadore was struck with Reads stick. I am certain it happened in a flash and a blur in the Lemelins eye and mind. Once it was brought to his attention by the other officials that Downie took a stick in the face the young ref would question his initial take on the play and defer to the senior members of the crew. That is the most logical way that this situation played out. That being said, we often see a camera shot of a coach on the bench pointing up to a replay on the big screen when he feels the official has blown a call. In that example the coach has no problem using the replay to his benefit even though the call wont likely be changed. The officials dont skate around the ice with horse blinders on so Im not saying the temptation to peak at the Jumbotron is out of the question when they grope with getting a call right. As long as the League allows in-house replays, who could blame any of the officials if they happened to skate to the conference with their head held high - you never know whats playing at a theatre near you! "Right now Im focusing on trying to learn the plays, learning the coverages and the game plan and the assignments. So I didnt have time to really think about history," Collins said at a crowded press conference less than an hour before his Brooklyn Nets faced the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night. Collins signed a 10-day contract with the Nets earlier Sunday and played in the first half against the Lakers, grabbing a rebound and committing a couple of fouls. The 35-year-old centre revealed at the end of last season he is gay, but he was a free agent and had remained unsigned. Collins said he was aware of the magnitude of his signing, but repeatedly said he was most concerned with learning the Nets schemes. "The pressure is playing in an NBA game tonight and last time I played in an NBA game was last April," Collins said. "So I think thats enough pressure right there." With a need for another big man, the Nets turned to the 7-foot Collins, who helped them reach two NBA Finals in the early 2000s. "The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision," general manager Billy King said in a statement. "We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice for a 10-day contract." Collins has played 12 NBA seasons, including his first seven with the Nets, when they were in New Jersey and Jason�Kidd was their point guard. After losing Brett�Cecil to groin tightness on Friday, the Blue Jays watched as R.A.�Dickey removed himself from the game in the seventh inning on Saturday with the same problem. Dickey insisted the decision to excuse himself was as much preventative as anything else but the sight of the knuckleballer trudging off the field cast a further pall on a 3-2 loss to the Orioles. "I didnt want to jeopardize my next start," said Dickey. "I was probably out of the game after that next batter anyway so I decided it was probably in everybodys best interest to call it a day." The Blue Jays conclude their four-game set in Baltimore on Sunday and have an off-day on Monday before opening up a three-game series in New York. Dickey isnt scheduled to work again until Saturday in Cincinnati and hes hopeful the extra day will provide enough time for a full recovery. He saw a doctor after leaving the game and the diagnosis left Dickey feeling optimistic. He admitted, however, that he has never had a groin injury and therefore had no comparable to assess the degree of the problem. Meantime, Adam�Lind fouled a pitch off the top of his right foot in the sixth inning. He finished the at-bat against Orioles starter Bud�Norris, grounding out, and didnt return when his designated hitters spot came up again in the eighth. Dioner�Navarro took his place. X-rays were negative, its a bone bruise, but Lind was noticeably hobbling after the game. "You can see the seams," said Lind of the bruise. "I didnt have a shin guard on or a foot guard so Ill be wearing one in the near future," said Lind. "I hit it pretty good. I hit it right on the sweet spot so it wasnt a soft liner off my foot. It was a pretty good one." Lind will ice the injury on Saturday night and didnt rule out playing on Sunday, although to the observer that would seem unlikely. Offensive Struggles Torontos offensive slump continued on Saturday. While the Jays got nine hits off five Orioles pitchers, the club stranded five runners in scoring position on the afternoon. Jose�Bautista was thrown out at home trying to score from first base on Edwin�Encarnacions one-out double in the eighth. Baltimore led 3-1 at the time. Chalk it up to a bad send by third base coach Luis Rivera, who was overaggressive in waving Bautista around, perhaps because everyone is pressing to try to generate runs. Toronto has lost six of eight games heading into Sundays series finale with the Orioles. At the time of this publishing, the Yankees were three games back of the Jays for top spot in the AL East (pending the result of their game on Saturday night in Oakland). McGowans First Save Dustin�McGowan pitched the final inning and two-thirds of Friday nights 4-0 Blue Jays win over the Orioles, notching his first career big league save. He didnt know of his milestone, however, until after the game when Jose�Bautista presented him with the baseball. The Orioles had two runners on, meaning the tying run was in the on deck circle, qualifying McGowan for the save. "I usually do," said McGowan when told he didnt know the rules for a save. "When I came in, I was just focused on getting the batter out." McGowans first pitch came in a 1-2 count to Baltimore slugger Chris�Davis. Davis, like probably most in the ballpark, was expecting a fastball. What he got was a changeup on the outer half of the plate with plenty of movement. He flailed and struck out. "Yeah it was a good pitch," said McGowan. "It was the best pitch I could throw in that situation and luckily it worked out." McGowan had never had a save. Had he had a one-pitch strikeout before? "I dont think Ive ever had one of those either," said McGowan. "Probably the last one of those I get, too." Whats clear in his tone of voice and in his body language is McGowans at peace with his permanent move to the bullpen. He thrived in the role last season and in 11 relief appearances this year, McGowans allowed one earned run in 13 1/3 innings (0.68 ERA) while striking out eight and walking only one. Manager John Gibbons has said repeatedly he believes the life of a short man will lengthen McGowans career. "I think hes right," said McGowan. "Im recovering a lot better out of the bullpen and Im not throwing 100 pitches, which makes it a lot easier." The role suits McGowans personality, too. Hell throw his fastball at 95 miles per hour without worry. "Thats one thing you can do out of the bullpen. You can let it go," said McGowan. "When I was starting, I had to reserve some in the tank. Its fun letting it go, too. Its how Ive always been so it kind of works out good for me." Jays Fast-track Santos Return A day after manager John Gibbons indicated Sergio�Santos would remain with Double-A New Hampshire for a third rehabilitation appearance, Santos was back with the Blue Jays on Saturday. The reason: Brett�Cecil has a groin injury and while he hasnt been placed on the disabled list, Cecil wasnt available for Saturdays game against the Orioles and Dustin�McGowan, who threw 1 2/3 innings on Friday evening, was available in a limited role. Outfielder Darin�Mastroianni was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo to make roster space for Santos. Cecil was feeling better on Saturday but wasnt sure whether he would require a trip to the disabled list. Manager John Gibbons cant have a short bench and a short bullpen at the same time so a decision will have to be made soon. "A couple of days," said Gibbons. "Were short on our roster too with a position player." Mastroianni and Kevin�Pillar, both right-handed hitting outfielders, are inside the 10-day option window, meaning neither can return to the Blue Jays unless they replace a player whos gone on the disabled list. Pillar was part of a centerfield platoon with left-handed hitting Anthony�Gose in the absence of Colby�Rasmus. The Ducks may have stumbled in the middle, but reserve guard Jason Calliste says the Ducks still belong in the national conversation -- especially after a 64-57 victory over No. 3 Arizona in the regular-season finale Saturday. "We can be one of the best teams in the country," he said. "Doesnt matter who were playing. Doesnt matter what the name on the chest says." Calliste made the go-ahead jumper and free throw with 4:22 left and finished with 18 points for the Ducks, who trailed by as many as 12 points. "I just didnt want to lose," he said. "Wasnt time to go home yet." Johnathan Loyd added 16 points for the Ducks (22-8, 10-8 Pac-10) who greatly improved their chances of a bid in the NCAA tournament. Last season Oregon won the Pac-12 tournament and advanced all the way to the final 16. Aaron Gordon had 21 points for the Wildcats (28-3, 15-3), who had already clinched the Pac-12 regular-season title heading into next weeks conference tournament in Las Vegas. The Ducks won 13 straight to start the season and were ranked as high as No. 10, but then they lost five straight to tumble out of the poll and fall in the Pac-12 standings. The Ducks considered the game a must-win after a six-game winning streak made them a possible bubble team for the NCAA post-season and gave them their fourth straight season with at least 20 victories. As for the prospects following the victory over Arizona, Oregon coach Dana Altman wasnt going to speculate. "Im not going to worry about all that," he said. "Weve got to go to the conference tournament and weve just got to play." The Wildcats led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Oregon closed to 31-29 at halftime. Simmons drove in four runs, Harang won his third straight start and the Atlanta Braves beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-4 Saturday for their season-high ninth straight victory. Justin�Upton added a two-run homer and a third RBI for the Braves, who have won 11 of 12 and are 11 games over .500 for the first time this season. Freshman Troy Caupain made two free throws with 12 seconds left to give the Bearcats a 57-56 lead. Clearly the Canadians werent willing to let it end. Trailing 2-0 to Finland at halftime, Nichelle Prince scored the game-winner as Canada roared back to win 3-2 at the FIFA U20 Womens World Cup on Friday, breathing new life into the teams hopes of advancing. "It was a great atmosphere in the locker-room (at halftime) considering the score," said coach Andrew Olivieri. "They were just really clear of the objective in the second. We had to find a way to finally put one in and then keep the pressure on." Janine Beckie and Valerie Sanderson, second-half substitutes, also scored in a thrilling final 45 minutes that Canada thoroughly dominated. Coming off a 1-0 loss to Ghana in their tournament opener, the Canadians needed at least a draw to have any hopes of moving on, but a victory looked far from certain until Beckie, who plays college soccer at Texas Tech, finally scored the teams first goal of the tournament in the 48th minute. The 19-year-old, whose older brother is former Columbus Crew defender Drew Beckie, fired a shot off the post that curled in off a Finnish defender. "Andrew (made the substitutions) to bring a little bit more energy to the game, we were in a little bit of a slump so I just wanted to come on and bring my own kind of energy and my game," Beckie said. "I scored the goal, thank god, it was a great ball in, and we were just really excited to get in there and make a difference." Sanderson, a 19-year-old who plays for the University of Memphis, pulled Canada even in the 50th when she one-timed a low cross from Prince to beat Finnish goalkeeper Vera Varis. "It was an amazing feeling," Prince said. "We all worked hard to get back to the 2-2 tie, and we just had to push a little bit longer and get that extra goal in. I knew we were going to get it and I was happy I could be the one to score." The game drew 16,503 fans to the lakeshore stadium. A large section of Ghana fans had stuck around from their 3-0 loss to North Korea in the early game, and spontaneously broke into "O Canada." "Thats for sure the biggest crowd Ive ever played in front of, and it was just incredible," Beckie said. "To have this World Cup at home in front of a 16,000-plus stadium is just an unbelievable feeling, and for them to be behind us the whole game, even when we were down, they really helped us get that win." Canada heads to Montreal to face Finland on Tuesday in its final game of the preliminary round. The Canadians need to finish top two in Group A to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament, which is a test run for the Womens World Cup next year in Canada. Juliette Kemppi scored both goals for Finland, opening the scoring in the ninth minute with a header of a corner kick. Kemppi doubled Finlands lead in the 21st, capitalizing on a poor clearing effort by Canada. Sura Yekka, who made her national senior debut almost a year ago, passed the ball inside straight to the foot of Kemppi, who launched a shot past Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan. Canadas keeper said, despite the halftime score, she was confident her team could turn it around. "We had a long talk about this before the game, it was really important for us to get goals, and (the strikers) were determined, I knew they were determined," Sheridan said. "They had so much grit and so much power in them, I was just so happy when that first goal went in, I knew we were going to get ahead." Finland had opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to North Korea, which is undefeated in two games to lead Group A. Canadas best finish at this tournament was in 2002 -- a loss to the United States in the gold-medal game in Edmonton in an event that launched the international careers of Christine Sinclair and Kara Lang, among others. The Canadians had several other decent scoring chances Friday, including a couple from Jessie Fleming. The 16-year-old had a long floating shot that bounced off the crossbar midway through the first half, then fired a low shot that Varis had to dive for a few minutes later. Emma Fletcher fired a long volley off a cross from Prince that would have been a beautiful goal had it not soared just wide of the net. The Canadians know theyre in tough in against North Korea. "Theyre the third best in the world in youth programs," Olivieri said. "We know we need to play better than we did tonight, even though there was some good stuff, some bright moments, and were going to have to play 90 minutes of quality football against North Korea just to get a result." The Group A winner will play its quarter-final in Toronto, while second place in the group will head to Edmonton for the quarters.
