So here then is a team-by-team look at what may top the Christmas lists in each CFL city and what may also be a pleasant surprise for each team under the tree this year. We will start with the Grey Cup champion BC Lions, where Wally Buono made the announcement quickly that he would be handing the coaching responsibilities over to Mike Benevides in 2012. While the former defensive coordinator was not guaranteed the job at any point over the last couple of years, the decision was not a surprise and now the focus for both the new head coach and GM is to sign three key free agents. So you have to believe that on the top of the Lions Christmas list are the signatures of Kahlif Mitchell, Paul McCallum and Aaron Hunt on new contracts before they get to free agency in February. Benevides may have to fill some coaching vacancies, including his own DC roll, as the off-season continues but unlike other teams, this likely wont be an issue for the Lions free agents. Generally speaking, when a player is coming off a Grey Cup year, they would have to see an amazing offer to leave a team that has just won the championship. With the emergence of Canadian Andrew Harris at the running back position for BC, the signing of Edmontons Calvin McCarty would be a nice addition to the roster. It sounds like players like Andy Fantuz are taking their time and waiting to see what the entire coaching staff will look like before signing a new deal. And if the money is similar, the Canadian receiver could then consider which team has the best chance to win based on their coaching staffs. I know it is getting old for Hamilton fans to hear it, but Kevin Glenn is still a very good QB and Quinton Porter took major steps forward in his development last year. However, a pleasant surprise for Ti-Cat fans could be another QB added to the mix that shows well enough to, at worst push Glenn and Porter to be better, and at best is so good, that he becomes the starter. Hamiltons duo last year was good enough to beat Montreal on the road in the Semi-final; that says a lot about how close they are. In Montreal, Marc Trestman and Jim Popp likely have less urgent items on their list but no less important. The Als slipped last year on defense and will need to put the improvement on that side of the ball at the top of their list. Injuries were a big reason for the drop off over there but that doesnt change the fact that the team will have to improve on D in 2012. Historically, Jim Popp has not been a GM that goes crazy in free agency, but this year there are some very good defensive players on the FA lists that could be of interest to the Als. And finally we move to the team that this off-season has quickly become one of the most interesting squads in the game as we look ahead to the 2012 season; the Toronto Argonauts. They have a new coach in Scott Milanovich, whom many thought was the number one candidate in the league for a promotion, and quickly added a future Hall of Famer in Ricky Ray at quarterback for the new HC to work with, so all of a sudden a great young offensive mind is working with a championship caliber QB who is still in his prime. So, number one on the Argos list has got to be someone for Ray to throw to. There are a couple of keepers currently on the roster like Spencer Watt and Maurice Mann, but Milanovich is used to working with powerhouse receiving corps in Montreal and Im sure has pass catchers as his number one priority. As far as a pleasant surprise goes, well Im going to go off the map here and go with the announcement that owner David Braley is going to build the team a state of the art practice facility. It would be a gift that would take a while to build but is long over due and would truly send the message to new potential Argo fans that Braley is in it for the long haul and so is the team in Toronto. As for the league office itself, it was a pretty good year but as has been said many times in sports; if your not improving and moving forward you are moving backward, and the CFL head office does not want to lose any momentum. So you have to believe that number one on their Christmas list would be to hammer out a new long term TV contract. Now I should first say that while I work for TSN, I am not privy to any of the conversations or meetings with regards to the new TV deal. That is all business that is conducted on a floor of the offices that I never venture into. However, it makes a ton of sense for the CFL to get a new TV deal (with whomever may be involved) done sooner rather than later. It would add instant stability to the league and would give the member clubs an increase in revenues right away rather than a year or two from now. "Im going to help him each and every day. Im going to help him get better. My thing is, when its my time to go out there and play, Ive got to be ready when my numbers called. And nothing can come in between that." Vick, who signed with New York in March, acknowledged this situation is different from last off-season with Philadelphia when he headed into workouts competing with Nick�Foles for the starting job. "We knew, both of us coming in, that it was open competition, and the best guy was going to win the job," he said. "Whoever performed well throughout OTAs and preseason, thats just what it was. It was pretty much cut and dried. This situation ... its kind of unique. "But even though its not an open competition, were both competing every day and we both have to perform well each and every day." Coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik have said that Vicks presence is expected to help Smith with his development from his shaky rookie season. Idzik preaches competition at every position, although Ryan has said Smith will be tough to beat out. "Its not been made public that its an open competition," Vick said. "Chip Kelly made it known that it was an open competition (in Philadelphia). But were still not going to change our approach. This is the NFL. Youve got to perform. Youve got to be at your best each and every day." Vick still believes he can be a starter in the NFL, and was playing well in Kellys up-tempo offence before a hamstring injury sidelined him. Foles took over and started the rest of the season. Vick was forced into a mentors role, and he drew praise from Kelly and the Eagles for how he handled the situation. He could find himself in the same situation this season. "Its still tough right now, Ill admit," Vick said. "I wont lie. Because deep down, you always want to be a starter. You always feel like youre starting. Thats just the competitive nature in me. And hopefully, that opportunity will come again one day and Ive just got to keep working for it." Despite all that, both Vick and Smith will be closely watched from now through training camp. If the two perform at about the same level, Vick is fairly certain of the outcome. "Ill compete as if Im the last guy on the depth chart trying to make this team. I think thats what makes me better and thats the way I work, and Ive always done that. The biggest difference is my familiarity with the offence, knowing my protections, not trying to come in and learn everything on the go. "Having 16 games under my belt is really going to pay off for me."
