Cole�Hamels, LHP, Philadelphia - Shoulder tendinitis caused Hamels trouble early in spring training and hes behind as a result, but is making progress now. He still has some minor-league starts to work through as he rehabs, and could return as soon as late April. Manny�Machado, 3B, Baltimore - The rising star is still recovering from October knee surgery and, considering he is already the best fielding third baseman on the planet, there will be some letdown until he returns which, according to the Baltimore Sun, is apparently sometime in late April. While Machado is out, Ryan�Flaherty, who has 16 home runs and a .653 OPS in 163 career games, starts at third for the Orioles. Hisashi�Iwakuma, RHP, Seattle - Out with a torn tendon in his middle finger, Iwakuma has been cleared to resume throwing and will begin building strength in his arm to get where he needs to be as a starter. Hes likely to miss the first month of the season as he rehabs. Taijuan�Walker, RHP, Seattle - A shoulder impingement has halted the progress of the Mariners top pitching prospect, but has resumed throwing and may only miss the first few weeks of the season. With Iwakuma and Walker out, LHP Roenis Elias and veteran RHP Chris�Young have landed a couple of rotation spots to start the year. Mat�Latos, RHP, Cincinnati - Still recovering from knee surgery, Latos doesnt seem that far away, as hes set to make a rehab start in Double-A this week. If that means he misses a couple starts for the Reds before coming off the DL in mid-April, thats not the end of the world. Jhoulys�Chacin, RHP, Colorado - Effectively, the ace of the Rockies staff, is coming back from a shoulder strain, but is expected to miss the first month of the season. With Chacin out, Franklin�Morales is one of the pitchers that will get a turn in the rotation. Aroldis�Chapman, LHP, Cincinnati - After taking a line drive off the head, Chapman is making progress and appears to be on track to recover, though he has yet to be cleared to resume throwing, that could come in the next couple weeks. In the meantime, with Jonathan�Broxton also on the DL, RHP J.J.�Hoover is the leading candidate for saves in the Cincinnati bullpen. Michael�Bourn, CF, Cleveland - A hamstring strain has slowed the speedy outfielder who is not expected to be ready, when hes eligible, to come off the DL Friday. Bradley has more versatility in that his skills can translate to any of the three outfield spots. Hes expected to return sometime in May from a strained forearm and isnt a bad sleeper as a reclamation project following his disastrous 2013 season in Toronto. While Johnson is out, LHP Robbie�Erlin has a spot in the Padres rotation. Wilson�Ramos, C, Washington - Suffered an injured hand in the first game of the year, but x-rays were negative, so it may not be broken, which would obviously be good news. For as long as Ramos is out, Jose�Lobaton is next in line to handle catching duties for the Nationals. Marco�Scutaro, 2B, San Francisco - With a back injury basically wiping out Scutaros spring, he appears to be some distance from returning to the field. One-time touted prospect, now utility infielder Joaquin�Arias will see the bulk of the work at second while Scutaro remains sidelined. Carlos�Quentin, LF, San Diego - A knee injury will keep Quentin on the DL to start the year, and beyond the minimum 15 days. Veterans Chris�Denorfia and Seth�Smith could be the best bets to play in Quentins absence. Bobby�Parnell, RHP, N.Y. Mets - On the shelf due to a partial torn ligament in his elbow, Parnell may be headed for surgery and that leaves the closers role open. First up is 36-year-old veteran Jose�Valverde, who has 286 career saves, but flamed out with the Tigers last season, allowing six home runs in 19 1/3 innings to lose the job. Gordon�Beckham, 2B, Chicago White Sox - With an oblique injury limiting Beckham, though possibly not for long, Marcus�Semien gets the starts at second base for the White Sox. Semien, 23, has hit 36 home runs with an .828 OPS and 36 stolen bases in three minor-league seasons. Geovany�Soto, C, Texas - A torn meniscus could keep Soto out for three months, which gives J.P.�Arencibia an opportunity to rebound from a tough 2013 season, but that playing time is no guarantee either. Robinson�Chirinos could challenge for playing time, especially if Arencibias defence is a problem. Andy�Dirks, LF, Detroit - Slated to miss at least the first two months as he recovers from back surgery, Dirks is replaced by Rajai�Davis in left field for the Tigers. "Setting screens, rebounding, shooting my shot, running the floor in transition and making my teammates better." Patterson, who came over to Toronto from the Sacramento Kings on Dec. 9 in a seven-player trade that sent Rudy�Gay West, did all of that Monday in his first start in 30 games as a Raptor. He was a tidy 7-for-11 from the field -- including 3-for-5 from three-point range -- had six rebounds and added two assists. In his fourth season in the NBA, Patterson had 54 career starts, the majority with the Houston Rockets, coming into Monday night. He had started just six games this season, all with Sacramento. To start, he revamped his defence pairings and chose not to dress Eric�Tangradi and Devin�Setoguchi. He watched 19-year-old defenceman Jacob�Trouba get carried off on a stretcher in the second period after going head first into the boards on an offensive zone fore-check. He sat Evander�Kane a few shifts after Kane took his second minor penalty of the game and fifth in the last two games, lost defenceman Mark�Stuart early in the third as he slid into the post trying to break up an odd man rush, and saw his team down 3-1 in the third period to a very good defensive team. On the "D" pairings, Noel was looking for more balance and more consistency from the back end. Zach�Bogosian had been playing his off side, something that had to be short term. So Bogosian was paired with Toby Enstrom, Grant�Clitsome with Dustin�Byfuglien and Stuart with Trouba. The left/right balance was perfect. "You have to shake things up when youre not happy with the way things are going. We had to get more from people. It was enough, we needed to compete harder," said Noel of the changes and sitting the two veterans. Patrice�Cormier and Anthony�Peluso drew into the lineup in place of Tangradi and Setoguchi. Cormier was recalled from St. Johns Wednesday because of injuries the Jets have been dealing with. It appears Trouba is going to be okay and a timetable on his return right now does not matter � his health does. Kane played a key role in the comeback, and the four remaining defencemen did an outstanding job and were also key in the comeback, especially Enstrom and Byfuglien. The Jets had a much better start to this game despite giving up the first goal to David�Backes. Olli�Jokinen tied the game before a late first period goal by Alexander�Steen gave the Blues the lead. On both of the Blues first period goals the Jets had possession of the puck but gave it away. The Blues hit three goal posts and a cross bar in the first and Ondrej�Pavelec in a post-game interview was the first to acknowledge that it could have been a different score after one.� Steens seventth of the year early in the third made it a 3-1 game, and the Blues do not surrender two goals leads very often. But the Jets stayed with the game plan and were able to take advantage of a turnover in the Blues zone. Kanes shot went off the sticks of both Blues defencemen and in to bring the Jets to within one with 6:47 to go. With just under two minutes left in regulation, Byfuglien made a great play to keep the puck in in the zone and eventually set up Enstrom for a one-timer that tied the game. Overtime did not produce a goal and just like the first time the Blues played at MTS Centre, the game went to a shootout. With Blues up 2-1 in the shootout, Bryan�Little, the Jets third shooter, had to score to keep the Jets alive and he did. Pavelec stopped the next four Blues shooters before Jokinwn put the Jets ahead giving Pavelec centre stage to win the game with a save on Chris�Stewart, which he did. It was the second time this season the Jets (now 4-4 and 3-3 at home) came from two down to win. They did the same in Edmonton on opening night. He had a point to prove: hes back, and hes not worried about his surgically repaired elbow, as he enters what he hopes will be his first full season in the major leagues. "I expected make the team and now Im ready to go perform," said Hutchison after his final Grapefruit League start on March 27. Manager John Gibbons and pitching coach Pete�Walker rave about Hutchisons poise. They love his mound presence. Theyve been thrilled with his bounce back from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery dating back to his appearances in the Arizona Fall League. Hutchison, a command and control pitcher, routinely pumped his fastball to the plate at 92-94 miles per hour, painting the corners along the way. "We like him," said manager John Gibbons. "Hes got a chance to be a real good one. Ever since he had the Tommy John hes thrown better than he was." Results in spring training often dont matter. With Hutchison, they did. He was competing for a roster spot. He needed to show the Blue Jays he was healthy and could be consistently effective. As a young player, just 23 years old, with options, he needed to drastically outperform veterans who were out of options. He accomplished all that with a 1.80 ERA and 0.800 WHIP in four Grapefruit League starts, and gets the nod in Tuesday nights second game of the season-opening series in Tampa Bay. Not that it surprises him. "I thought Id come into camp and do exactly what I did," said Hutchison. "Thats my expectation level and thats what I feel I would be able to do." Hutchison often repeats variations of the word "expect." He has high expectations of himself, he expects to succeed; hes expecting a long and healthy career. He speaks with supreme confidence but without a hint of arrogance. Its all matter of fact. "I dont understand, at least from my perspective thats just the way Ive approached things and thats the way Ive always been," said Hutchison. "I expect that out of myself and now its time, spring trainings over and its time to go perform and win because thats what its all about." Whether Hutchisons approach translates into a successful season will be known only with the passage of time. Gibbons and Walker are looking for someone on which they can rely. The club has a reasonable idea of what to expect from R.A.�Dickey and Mark�Buehrle. Christian�Ehrhoff said Friday that he recently complied with the Sabres request to submit a list of eight teams that would make up the no-trade clause of his contract. Soon-to-be unrestricted free agents Matt�Moulson and Henrik�Tallinder could also move, and Murray has said contract status doesnt dictate availability. Even Halak or Stewart could be traded. "Theyre pieces that will be Buffalo Sabres when they pass their physicals and after that its the same as everybody else," Murray said. "And what I said, if it makes sense it makes sense. ... If theyre Buffalo Sabres, they play here and were happy with them." The overhaul began under Murrays predecessor, Darcy Regier, who was fired in November. Numbers Game breaks down the pieces involved in these two deals. The Oilers Get: RW Teddy�Purcell. Purcell, 28, is a skilled winger with good size, though he doesnt always use that size to his maximum advantage. Hes missed a total of three games over the past four seasons and his 194 points over that time ranks 57th in the league. Hes a productive player. A fine complement to other skilled forwards, Purcell has posted strong relative posession stats, enough that hes a solid fit as a second-line winger. How that fits with the current Oilers roster is an interesting question, at the very least. With Taylor�Hall, Jordan�Eberle, David�Perron and Nail�Yakupov on board, adding Purcell to the mix does give the Oilers plenty of scoring wingers, though they are now looking at a presumed hole at second-line centre, unless the Oilers are already projecting third overall pick Leon Draisaitl into that spot. Purcell has two years remaining on a contract that comes with a $4.5-million cap hit; no bargain, but not unreasonable for a top-six forward. The Coyotes Get: C Sam�Gagner and RW B.J.�Crombeen. Gagner is a 24-year-old who has never surpassed the 49 points that he scored as a rookie, but is also the second-leading scorer from the 2007 Draft class, behind only first overall pick Patrick�Kane. Its certainly possible that Gagner can recover his game, because hes still relatively young, but hes been a possession disaster over the past couple seasons and at least part of that reflects his defensive shortcomings. Where this fits for Arizona is that they have two-way centres that can effectively protect Gagner. With Martin�Hanzal and Antoine�Vermette available to face tougher match-ups, Gagner can be utilized in a role that focuses on offensive production. Since the Coyotes just bought out Mike�Ribeiro, its conceivable that Gagner could take over those minutes and Ribeiro started a higher percentage of his shifts in the offensive zone (minimum 40 games played) than anyone in the league last season. If the Coyotes are going to maximize Gagners production, they could also give him that offensive role and add a free agent winger to further upgrade their skill level. Former Oilers RW Ales�Hemsky is a free agent, but Jussi�Jokinen, Matt�Moulson and Mike�Cammalleri are other options that could have some appeal. Gagner has two years left on hiss contract, at a cap hit of $4. Tramon Williams Packers Jersey. .8-million, and will get $5-million per season in actual salary, with the Lightning retaining one-third the cost as part of the trade. More on that in a moment. Crombeen is a 28-year-old winger who has has 90 fights and 49 points in 265 games over the past six-plus seasons. Hes generally a subpar possession player, but not so much so that he cant handle a regular shift on the fourth line. Heading into the final year of his contract, Crombeen brings a cap hit of $1.15-million, and gives the Coyotes an enforcer that they can keep in the lineup on at least a semi-regular basis. The Lightning Get: A sixth-round pick in 2015. In the immediate aftermath of the Gagner-for-Purcell swap, the Lightning Tweeted that Gagner was going to be bought-out, which makes sense considering the Lightnings decision to retain salary as part of the deal with Arizona. Since Gagner is under 26-years-old, a buyout would cost one-third the value of his contract, so the Coyotes jumped in, before Gagner hit the open market, and by taking on Crombeens salary, gave the Lightning a little increased financial flexibility as they prepare for free agency on July 1. With more room to maneuver under the cap, the Lightning could go in a couple directions. They could go after a scoring winger -- Jarome�Iginla, Thomas�Vanek and Mike�Cammalleri are some options -- a veteran to complement a young and promising group of Tampa Bay forwards, or they could spend that money on defence. Former Lightning D Dan�Boyle could be one target, but Christian�Ehrhoff, Mark�Fayne, Anton�Stralman and Matt�Niskanen are among the more prized blueliners about to hit free agency. A sixth-round pick brings with it about a 15% chance of yielding an NHL player, so not great value, but a token price for taking on Crombeens contract. In a separate deal, the Lightning also moved Nate�Thompson to Anaheim, acquiring fourth and seventh-round picks in 2015. The picks bring a little less than a 30% chance of an NHL player, but the Lightning clear Thompsons $1.6-million per season for the next three years off the books. Essentially the Oilers, and especially the Lightning look like they are making moves to set up something else, other moves to make this offseason, while the Coyotes took advantage of an opportunity and filled a hole in their lineup at a very reasonable cost. After Grabovski was bought out by the Maple Leafs last summer, his former teammates expect him to be fired up when the Washington Capitals visit Air Canada Centre on Saturday night. "Im sure hell be wanting to put on a good show here in Toronto," centre Tyler�Bozak said. "Hell want to play well, for sure. Hopefully we can hold him to a minimum out there. Hes going to be going hard." Good friend Nikolai�Kulemin expects Grabovski is "going to play harder against us than any other teams." This after things went poorly in his final season in Toronto, culminating with his profanity-filled ripping of coach Randy Carlyle in an interview with TSN Radio 1050 after being bought out. Kulemin said Grabovski was a little nervous before getting married when he went off on Carlyle. Defenceman Carl�Gunnarsson said Friday he thought Grabovski did all right last year in spite of some adversity. "I guess he wasnt happy with how he played or how they used him in games," Gunnarsson said. "But even though going out to the media like that might not be the right answer to it. Thats up to him. I dont think anyone would happy to be bought out like that." Grabovski said this week hes comfortable with his role on the Capitals, centring the third line between Jason�Chimera and Joel�Ward. Coach Adam�Oates more offensive-minded system fits him better than Carlyles, so hes happy to have a fresh start. But that doesnt mean hes not at least "a little bit excited" to return to Toronto and face the Leafs. "Its motivation to play in the place where you play like a hometown," Grabovski told reporters at the Capitals practice facility Thursday. "Five years in the city. I feel like I have a lot of friends, a lot of family, I know a lot of people, so for me its like hometown. I can say I grew up in this place." Grabovski played 340 games with the Leafs, putting up 91 goals and 118 assists. He thrived under coach Ron Wilson and along the way earned a US$27.5-million, five-year contract. Carlyle used Grabovski in more defensive spots than he was used to, and the relationship soured. Even with the hard feelings, Grabovski said this week that Carlyle and his staff helped him become a better defensive and more disciplined player. Prompted Saturday with a question about Grabovski airing his grievances on the way out, Carlyle laughed it off with a profanity. "Im not here to comment on players comments," Carlyle said. "Players make comments, they have their own agenda. My agenda here is as weve stated when it happened, we thank him for his time here, wish him all the best and were moving on. Simple as that."
